for this competition to cooperate and collaborate with projects
undertaken within the framework of the UN-HABITAT and UNESCO common
research initiative on "Urban Policies and The Right to the City"; using
the exemplar images to promote the professional excellence of our work.

All
The goal of Suburbia Transformed 2.0 is to promote and celebrate residential designs that go beyond “green” by explicitly using sustainable strategies, tactics and technologies to enrich the aesthetic spatial experience of people. ST 2.0 will assemble contemporary projects achieving this goal into an exhibition and catalogue.

The emphasis is on how such sustainable landscapes can be beautiful, inspiring, perhaps profound; and serve as examples for transforming the suburban residential fabric, one garden at a time. Significantly, this year’s version, ST 2.0, invites the submission of visionary (unbuilt) work, along with built projects. Our hope is to trigger an instructive dialog between design that has been built and that which is untethered to the construction process. Such a curatorial stance has the additional benefit of opening up the competition to students, as well as professionals.

The University of South Florida, in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts invite designers to participate in an international urban design competition:

[re]stitch TAMPA welcomes entrants to envision a new interface between the city of Tampa, Florida and the Hillsborough River. Utilizing Landscape Urbanism as a lens, [re]stitch Tampa seeks to refocus the Hillsborough as a SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, and ECOLOGIC spine for Tampa.

Currently, Portions of Tampa's River walk have been realized. Developments such as Curtis Hixon Park and the new Tampa History Center have provided new access to the Hillsborough. Similarly, the previous decade witnessed renewed interest in Downtown living. However, private ownership along the river and the implementation of misguided Urban Renewal strategies have led to an identity crisis for Downtown and the Hillsborough.

As the River walk is further developed, [re]stitch Tampa seeks design solutions that rekindle an intimate relationship between a city and its river. Beyond merely skirting or crossing the river, urban design schemes will treat infrastructure as a palimpsest fostering balance between built and natural environments. Issues of storm water management will transcend traditional methods of implementation to reveal productive landscapes promoting social and economic sustainability. Issues of ecology should transcend the river to promote green infrastructure throughout downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

The City of Sebastopol, together with The Redwood Empire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a group of local business sponsors, is hosting The Core Project, an international design competition to generate innovative ideas for renewing the city center. A small town with a population of approximately 8,000 people, Sebastopol is the hub of western Sonoma County. It provides commercial and community access for roughly 50,000 people in outlying rural and residential areas but it retains a desirable small town feel.

The goal of The Core Project is to explore how the physical presence of Sebastopol can become a more economically thriving and aesthetically vibrant place, reflecting the natural beauty of the region and the character of the community. Each entry should emphasize one or more of the following key elements: traffic, commerce, and strengthening the connection between built and natural landscapes. Additionally, entrants are urged to submit innovative, challenging but feasible proposals to implement real, comprehensive changes. International entrants from diverse disciplines including student and professional architects, landscape architects, developers, engineers, urban planners, transportation planners, and artists are invited to participate. Multidisciplinary and collaborative design teams are strongly encouraged.

The competition is juried and cash prizes will be awarded. There will be a public exhibition and online publication of top award winners. A follow-up forum to determine possible implementation of design ideas is planned for early 2012. Cash prizes will be based upon number of entries and will be awarded at sole discretion of the jury.

Competition Objectives + Priorities
The purpose of Drylands Design is to generate a portfolio of long term design strategies for the arid and semi-arid west’s water-scarce future. Proposals must recognize and address:

The Water-Energy Nexus
The relationship between water, energy use, and heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions is intertwined and self-limiting; uncoupling water’s capture, treatment, distribution, and use from energy-intensive delivery systems is critical to a new western drylands design.

Scarcity + Variability
The twin effects of climate change on the American west’s hydrologic cycle are expected to be scarcity (prolonged drought periods and diminished snowpack) and variability (increased intensity of flood events). Design for variability will replace engineering for stationarity.

Localized Resources
Rain water, storm water and single-use municipal supplies, currently treated as waste or flood hazard, form the largest “undeveloped” sector of western water. Converting local liabilities to assets will offset dependence on carbon-intensive imports.

Social Equity
Recognizing that no built environment achieves true vitality without social equity, Drylands Design seeks proposals that actively benefit low- and middle-income communities, urban and rural. More specifically, Drylands Design seeks proposals that promote an active and participatory civic engagement by citizen-users.

Thus, Drylands Design seeks responsive, variable, localized, and low-carbon alternatives to energy-intensive, 20th-century centralized water engineering solutions. Drylands Design seeks a portfolio of strategies for the west that actively remediate the environmental sterility, economic monocultures, and cultural lethargy induced by the West’s dependence on an obsolete engineering paradigm. Drylands Design seeks proposals that tactically promote a place-specific built environment of both ecological and cultural vitality.

Site – Beyond the Hundredth Meridian
Drylands Design seeks proposals for the arid and semi-arid regions of the US West, using John Wesley Powell’s historic, and imprecise, designation—the 100th meridian—as its starting line. The 100th meridian, as Powell pointed out in his 1878 Report on the Lands of Arid Region, is the approximate demarcation line corresponding to a radical shift in US hydrology. Simply put, it is, more or less, where humid East ends and the arid West begins. All proposals must be sited in the United States, west of the 100th meridian.

Design proposals may be for a real or speculative project, for one or more real sites, and must be as yet BE unbuilt by Spring 2012. All design proposals must be sited conceptually within three scales: the local, the regional, and the global.

Local Specificity
All design proposals are required to be sited within a specific location in the U.S. arid or semi-arid west. Locally, even hyper-locally, site-specific design is required.

Regional Relevance
All design proposals are required to identify the ‘typicality’ of particular site conditions, and address or speculate on scalability and replicability of design strategies to other comparable sites throughout the west.

Global Context
All design proposals are required to speculate on scalability and replicability to drylands in other parts of the world. If sprawl is arguably the West’s most enduring global export, could intelligent drylands design be its next?

The £140m City Garden Project will radically transform a strategic central location, raising the nineteenth-century Union Terrace Gardens and covering over the unattractive Denburn dual carriageway and railway line.
It will create a space that draws on Aberdeen’s heritage but is also an inspiration for the future. A space which local people like, which they use to meet up and pop through – just for the pleasure of it. A space which appeals to visitors as somewhere to take the air, absorb different aspects of the local culture and enjoy a fascinating skyline.
The site, six hectares in area, will provide a safe, all-year round, civic garden that reflects Aberdeen’s success and international status. It should integrate the Union Street retail and business thoroughfare with the cultural attractions of an existing theatre and art gallery whilst providing the context for a new contemporary arts centre.
It’s an opportunity to create a new dynamic – re-connecting and revitalising different areas of the city.

In the third year of our open ideas student competition, AECOM is exploring the world’s most vital resource: Water. The Urban SOS: Water competition seeks creative design, planning and engineering responses to urban sites facing water-based challenges. Water is central to every aspect of city life: from basic human sustenance and public health to environmental remediation and overall urban renewal.

Responses can range from a strategic framework to a surgical micro-response, from a whole landscape system to a single piece of architecture or infrastructure. Entrants will be judged on their feasibility, creativity and multi-disciplinary approach.

The competition is open to teams of up to four students each. In order to be eligible, all team members must be enrolled in a certified undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate program of study in the autumn term 2011. The competition is geared towards those studying urban and regional planning, urban design, landscape architecture, architecture, engineering and related disciplines. This year, we are also encouraging entries especially from students concentrating on studies in water sciences or hydrology.

At this critical moment for American infrastructure, LIFE AT THE SPEED OF RAIL calls for participants to produce projects and scenarios that imagine the impacts of high-speed rail at all scales — architectural, metropolitan, regional, national. We invite architects to imagine new rail modes, new infrastructures, new cities and social spaces. We want landscape architects to picture rail paradigms that embrace topography, ecology or sustainability. Urban planners, convince us that high-speed rail will rejuvenate your downtown or launch a new sub-suburban geography. Graphic, product or interactive media designers, filmmakers, and artists can also contribute by using their respective art forms to tell the story infrastructure's impact.

The international competition for the SLANT AWARDS is being held this year for the first time
and on this occasion is aimed exclusively at students of Landscape Architecture and Landscape
Design.

The central idea behind this challenge is that the project in question is a "virtual project", one
that has been created specifically for this competition.

What you are being invited to do is to create a concept design for a public park, one which will not
only serve the needs of the citizens of this city, but which will also aim to achieve iconic status
and in so doing will enhance the international reputation of the city.

You will see from the brief that we are looking here at urban renewal, with the project being set
on a vacant site in a riverside location.

This competition has been designed to offer students an interesting challenge with what we believe
are interesting rewards, and we have tried to keep it as simple as possible.

You can enter as often as you like, either as an individual, or as a team of 2 or 3,
and an entry fee will be charged accordingly.

The challenge is to design a protective canopy for an urban pedestrian street. The goal is to provide an architectural solution that is functional, feasible and elegant. The canopy must protect people from the elements (rain, sun), while promoting good ventilation and daylight levels. Artificial lighting should be integrated into the design. The designer is free to choose a location, but the documentation should clearly explain the chosen location and how the design responds to climate and orientation. Please see the images in the gallery for design precedents.
Idea Challenge:

Monument Circle is a unique place and space, occupying the literal and figurative heart of Indianapolis, Indiana. As an “open ideas” competition, we invite participants to join us in celebration of the Circle’s rich history, while appreciating the important role it continues to play in the lives of businesses, citizens and visitors alike. In doing so, we hope the competition will generate creative concepts and ideas that re-imagine this already extraordinary space, and help us envision its future as the city continues to grow, evolve and occupy a greater prominence within the state, region, country – and beyond.
Following the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit in 2009, municipalities became aware of the importance of what they do alongside central government to limit greenhouse gas emissions, control energy consumption and manage (or preserve) rare and non renewable resources such as water, as well as to diminish pollution of different kinds. As a general rule, they are trying to achieve greater autonomy, in both food and energy, and want to develop societal innovations in order to encourage every Citizen to adopt an eco-responsible lifestyle. These geopolitical concerns need to be reflected in the design of urban spaces at the urban and architectural scale.

THE OBJECTIVE: URBAN ADAPTATION
Good-quality planning with a focus on sustainability should generate an evolution in its environmental and human components that is consistent on all scales. It has become a strategic factor, since it can enhance the economic, social and cultural attractiveness of a region, city or locality, and also boost local identity.

THE CHALLENGE: TO COMBINE URBAN AND NATURAL FABRIC
For a municipality, the quest for sustainability entails the production of areas that bring quality of life to everybody, in other words the appropriation of public space and ease of access to amenities and services.
A sustainable approach also involves tackling the question of nature. Whether developed, wild or in the form of local agriculture, nature needs to be reconciled with the urban fabric in order to enhance the territories of the city and protect resources, biodiversity and the urban future.

THE PRIORITIES: DENSIFICATION, ACCESSIBILITY AND CONNECTION
A city or conurbation that is seeking to achieve a degree of sustainability must moderate its horizontal expansion in order to limit its consumption of unbuilt land and thereby prevent urban sprawl. Sometimes it may even need to recycle or reduce its built-up areas, and reorder its existing fabric. In any case, thinking about the future requires the development of a prospective approach to the identification of local specificities.
The sharing of created spaces and access to the different municipal services promotes social relations between citizens.
Whatever their scale, areas interact and it is essential to develop these connections and interdependencies
in systems that extend from the local to the global. These connections must also allow access to knowledge and the confrontation of ideas.

THE REQUIREMENT: TO DESIGN URBAN PROCESSES WITH THE CAPACITY TO EVOLVE
For this purpose, Europan 11 entrants will need to propose an environmental development strategy and projects that have the potential to evolve and take account of the specific identity of the different locations.
Project designs will also need to include a method of achieving development that is appropriate to the scale of the site, despite the unknowns that may arise with the passing of time.
To fulfil this goal, the architect will need to bring together multiple skills (planning, landscape, environmental, economic, etc.). Only a synergy between different approaches will meet the challenge.

SITES: INCORPORATING CONTEXTUAL DIVERSITY
Geographical and territorial locations have their own specific character, so the remit will need to be diverse to obtain solutions that reflect the particular requirements of the site.
This is because every site, whatever its size, interferes with the surrounding area and this interference will depend on its scale. It will have to contribute to ensure that every new local or wider operation constitutes an enhancement within a global context by adding significant value. Finally, the site forms part of a specific urban culture that differs from country to country, which will need to be identified to allow competitors to take it into account.

SCALES: STRATEGY, IDEAS AND PROJECTS
The diversity inherent to the conditions, not to say the specific problems of each participating European country, means that three different scales need to be distinguished, ranging from the wider surrounding area to the specific location:
1- Global strategic scale (the scale given to the competitors)
 - The metropolitan area (spatial conurbation consisting of autonomous and interlinked urban units) and the city
(urban space of activity and habitat with diversity and mixture)
2- Ideas scale (scale used by competitors to define the problems to be resolved)
 - The district and its relations with the neighbouring districts
3- Scale of the urban and architectural project (focus of the design process)
 - The urban fragment and plots

INFORMATION ON THE SITES
These scales correspond to spaces of different sizes, which will need to be defined precisely for each site and on the basis of the contexts provided.
Each Europan 11 site pack will therefore contain three types of information for entrants, corresponding to the three scales:
- The political objectives of the city or conurbation in terms of sustainability (economic, social and cultural) together with the big territorial determinants (networks, usages, density, etc.), whether current or future.
- The specificities of the area where the site is located and the outlines of future evolution.
- The actual project site where operations are likely to occur after the competition, with all the information needed to understand existing conditions and the hoped-for changes.

The aim of the competition is to design a Central Park for one of the new condominiums located in the district of Santiago de Surco [Lima, Peru]. The idea is that this “Central Park” should be a place where the owners will be able to relax; an agreeable and peaceful area to think, which at the same time maintains a personalized style, while the “garden” may be of any type, from a Japanese or Chinese setting, to a wild minimalist design or one that makes use of the contemporary character of the condominium.
In April 2010, Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched the New York City Waterfront Vision and Enhancement Strategy (WAVES), a citywide initiative that will create a new sustainable blueprint for the City 578 miles of shoreline. Planning Commission Chair Amanda Burden said: Water is so important that we need to think of it as the sixth borough.
In April, 2014, New York City will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of 1964 New York World's Fair, dedicated to Man's Achievement on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe. The fair is best remembered as a showcase of mid-20th century American culture and technology. More than 51 million people attended the fair. The nascent Space Age, with its vista of promise, was well-represented. 50 years later, it is time for New York City to showcase the 21st century promise of CLEANTECH.
ONE PRIZE announces an open call for proposals for:

I. NYC BLUE NETWORK linking NYC five boroughs with a series of green transit hubs incorporating electric passenger ferries, water taxis, bike shares, electric car-share and electric shuttle buses.

II. CLEAN TECH WORLD EXPO E3NYC expecting to host 10 miilion visitors from 5/1/2014 to 10/31/2014. The Expo will be organized into six zones, the five traditional boroughs as well as the water. Unlike capital intensive Olympics and World Fairs, Clean Tech World Expo will use existing and planned facilities, or new ones with a strong economic proposition. The goal is to create the world’s largest urban clean tech corridor along the water and establish New York City as the ultimate green capital of the world.

Donegal County Council Public Art Office in partnership with the Irish Architecture Foundation and the RIAI (Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland) are delighted to launch an architectural competition for the design of a Play Space in Killybegs, Co. Donegal.

The promoters are seeking to make this one stage architectural competition an exemplar play commission and to this end, the IAF has initiated a detailed and comprehensive consultation process with the children, parents and playground committee in Killybegs.

The PlaySpace is an Architectural Public Art Commission made possible by a partnership funding arrangement utilising the Per Cent for Art Scheme budget, a disability budget and a budget secured by the Killybegs Playground Committee.

The commissioning of Public Art, utilising the Per Cent for Art Scheme gives the public the opportunity to experience a vast range of contemporary art in everyday life and provides the artist with the challenge and opportunity of creating work for public engagement and response. Architecture, as defined by the Arts Act of 1973 is one of the many art forms that can be commissioned utilising the Per Cent for Art Scheme.

Commissioning Public Art does not mean merely providing the public with the most obvious and fixed solution, for this would preclude the possibility of truly innovative art. It involves a process of dialogue and expanding horizons in the sense that people cannot express a desire for that which they have not yet experienced. This PlaySpace should cultivate a greater understanding of place, allow children the fullest play experiences, and benefit their families and the wider community.
The IAF has secured a Play Specialist for the project, to mediate access to the end-users of the PlaySpace, the children of Killybegs. A consultation report, available in the Competition Pack provides direct feedback from local children about their aspirations for the PlaySpace.

The International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA) has launched “Urban Boundaries,” an international student competition. The organizers seeks out submissions that provide examples of an “urban – rural transition or boundary in which the values for land are in conflict” along with a landscape architecture solution that shows how “urban boundaries can be positive transitional elements between the urban landscape and undeveloped land.”

IFLA says sustainable land-use is now a global priority. However, urban sprawl continues unabated and ”pressures on the landscape are growing.” Any empty space near a city is almost always now viewed as potential space for development. As a result, identifying and preserving the boundary between urban sprawl and undeveloped land is becoming increasingly important. The organizers say “this competition is based on the thought that the greater the economic value attributed to undeveloped land, the more indiscriminate the inappropriate development will be – and hence the concern about protection.”

IFLA’s competition is open to all landscape architecture students, or in the case of countries without a formal landscape architecture program, allied disciplines. Both individual and group submissions will be accepted, but group teams can have a maximum of five members. Each student or group is permitted only one entry. IFLA adds that “broad interdisciplinary submissions are welcome; however, the project must be about landscape architecture.”
