Springtime Tree Care

With spring in full bloom, it’s time to get around to properly caring for you trees. In order to do this, you need to take care of a few important tree care tasks.

Cleaning Up

One of the first steps of springtime tree care is cleaning. You should take any lights or other decorations off of your trees. Lights especially can cause trees problems if left on them for too long. Also, if you have any wraps around trees that were protecting them during the winter, you should take them off now. Twigs and debris of any sort should be properly cleaned up by raking it. Debris can cause trees problems like fungal growth, so raking up leaves or fruit that has fallen on the ground is important.

Spreading Mulch

Another useful tree care tip is to spread a layer of mulch. The mulch should be spread near the trees, but be careful not to put it directly against a tree’s trunk. Mulch is moist and could cause the tree to become diseased if placed on the trunk.

Mulch is useful because it helps stop the growth of weeds. It also will keep soil moist. It’s especially beneficial for young trees, but it’s fine for older trees as well.

Watering Trees

You shouldn’t water your trees until the soil is thawed out. When the soil is ready, you should begin watering them. Any areas around trees that had de-icing products used on them need to be thoroughly and deeply watered in order to get salt away from the roots of the trees.

It’s not a good idea to let a tree become too dry. You will have to water the trees more if you have sandy soil; water them as many times as you need to. This will ensure they are healthy.

Sprinklers need to be carefully inspected to make sure there are no problems with any of the components like the emitters. If there is a leak or other issue, it could cause puddles around trees which will cause problems. The position of the sprinklers is important, too. They shouldn’t be able to spray onto the leaves or flowers of trees that might grow fungi when wet for extended periods of time.

Pruning

Another springtime chore for tree care is proper pruning. When it’s spring, you shouldn’t cut back any healthy branches (wait until summer when seasonal growth is complete) but definitely inspect trees to see if there are any dead branches. Remove dead branches or branches that have been broken.

Inspection

When spring comes, you should check your trees to see if they have any diseases, fungi, or damage by rabbits. Wire mesh can be placed over rabbit holes in the trunk to prevent further damage.

If one or more of your trees is diseased or has major damage to it, you can contact an expert to help take care of the problem.

Pest Damage

There are a variety of pests that can cause damage to trees. Research and talk to a certified arborist about methods to protect your trees from pests.

Garden Journals: Documentation is a key to successful garden design

Documentation is a key element in helping you along the garden design path. I highly recommend that you keep a Garden Journal for specific notes on what was planted and its location, where the plant was purchased, and any other important details.

Here are some tips on what to keep in your garden journal:

1. Draw your Garden Plan layouts. Even though the plan may change over the course of time, this will give you something to work off and a place to start.
2. Keep all tags and receipts from plants that have a warranty in your journal. This is especially important for large, expensive items such as trees, shrub’s/bushes and fruit bearing plants. It’s frustrating when you loose a year of growth when a plant dies, but if you have the receipt, you’ll at least be able to get a replacement at no charge.
3. Photograph your gardens. I suggest doing this in the early and late parts of each season. This will give you an accurate account of how things grew. Having this info will also help you in knowing what needs to be filled in, removed, thinned out or re-done.
Take photos of your trees and other larger plants every year to document growth.

If you really liked a particular planting or arrangement you created with annuals, be sure to include the tags with a photo of the bed, along with where you purchased the plants.

4. Save Ideas: I often see planting designs and architectural items in other gardens that I would like to replicate. I take photo’s to put in my journal otherwise I wouldn’t remember everything. I also photocopy ideas out of gardening magazines and store them there as well. I also use an Idea Notebook that I keep in my purse to jot down ideas I see driving past a lovely yard or something ‘neatsy’ at a greenhouse/nursery.

Documenting your gardens growth in a garden journal will allow you to page through the history as well as the future dreams of your gardens.

There are very little joys quite like nurturing something from birth and watching it come to its own. Those who are big into gardening know this feeling of satisfaction all too well and revel in it, as a matter of fact, it is sometimes the reason that we garden in the first place. I am not trying to debunk the use of gardening tools or products, far from it. Instead, I wish to bring to light the copious amounts of options available to garden enthusiasts. With the advent of organic products in the gardening market, now folks can have their cake AND eat it too! That desire to keep life simple, organic, and clean is possible as manufacturers have started to listen to the wants of their consumer base. Now alongside regular pesticides, fertilizers and gardening equipment, there are equivalent products on the market today that allow you to practice natural garden pest control.

Some examples of the proliferation in the organic product category include some items such as neem oil, which is a vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of the Azadirachta indica (Neem), an evergreen tree. Another example of organic products that are available are Beneficial nematodes; which are natural predators of common garden pests like aphids, cutworms, white grubs, Japanese beetles, etc. and are used accordingly. Let us not forget larger pests like the raccoon, rabbit or deer; innovate animal repellants like Contech’s scarecrow sprinkler work to set these rascals straight by using nothing more than water to shoo them away from your precious gardens.

The best part about these environmentally conscience offerings is that their just a small sampling of what is out on the market right now, so I suggest that you take the time to do your homework, figure out you garden problem, deduce from that problem which organic solution works best for your situation and keep that garden of yours in pristine condition. All the while, you are taking care of business worry free knowing that you have preserved the organic integrity or your garden!

Gardens are both a haven of rest and a place to enjoy fellowship with family and friends. These spaces become a reflection of our personalities and an extension of the things we love.

Whether you’re a die hard gardener or someone just looking to create a little Eden of your own, it doesn’t have to be difficult. Many enjoy the idea of designing new garden spaces, but may wonder how to begin? Here are some tips you’ll need to address before the big day of breaking ground. That day is right around the corner… don’t let your dreams sit stagnant and lifeless, start planning now!

· Location: This is the first step. It will determine what type of plants you will purchase, whether irrigation will be necessary and if so, what type. Will it be along a building? In the middle of the yard? An extension of an existing garden?

·Type of Garden: Do you want a perennial bed or border with a few annuals as fillers? Is this a small bed that you would like to plant up with annuals each year to have variation? Will it to be a combination of both annuals and perennials? Are you looking to create a formal garden, herb garden, rose garden or kitchen garden?

· Hard Scape Elements: This includes walkways- what will you use for the ‘floor’- pea gravel, mulch, slate, brick, etc. Where will the arbors, pergola, trellis’ and fencing be placed? Will there be ponds, retaining walls, etc. Hard scaping is something that should be determined early on.

· Plant Selection: Once location, type of garden and hard scape elements are determined you can start choosing plants. The amount of sun or lack of will determine which types. Decide whether you will order some and/or purchase at nurseries, can you start any by seed? Bulbs will need to be purchased this fall. What about getting plants from family and friends when they divide theirs this spring?

· Architectural Elements: The type of garden you choose will determine what these elements will be. Formal English gardens will have more distinct lines using hedges of Boxwood; Cottage gardens will use what I refer to as garden junque, etc.

· Irrigation: will you use sprinklers/hoses, underground sprinkler systems, above ground drip lines, soaker hoses?

· Mulching: Mulch will help maintain moisture and hold back weeds and are a must in my opinion. Again what you choose should fit with your garden style. Mulch color, lava rock, white marble stones, bark, etc.

Now that you have lots of great ideas swimming around in your mind, get a piece of paper and start writing it down…

Tips on Cottage Garden Treasure Hunting for Eclectic Junque

Cottage gardens speak in soft whispers…. As you stroll through my garden’s you’ll unearth many curious objects (garden junque) sprinkled here and there. One may be peaking out of a cluster of tulips while another is nestled into the depths of a climbing vine. I enjoy re-purposing other people’s cast offs, melding functionality with creativity leaving the guest with an unforgettable feeling.

In my previous post I discussed objects that make great garden containers. Today let’s look at where you can find them along with some shopping tips.

Where to find great junque:

Flea markets are a great place to find eclectic items of all sorts.
Rummage sales are typically loaded with cast offs.
Antique shops are the best place to explore because they realize garden junque is something their shoppers want.
Thrift shops. The Salvation Army, The Good Will, and smaller independently owned shops are good places to start.
Garage sales are always hit and miss. Look for block or subdivision sales which will keep you in a concentrated location.
Estate sales will typically have some interesting older pieces.
Auctions, especially in the country offer loads of great junque. Read over the auction’s sale items list.
Craig’s List, EBay and similar sites. Search under garden supplies, antique tools, watering cans, etc. and specific item names (i.e. Tin buckets).

My minds eye is in tune with what I love in my gardens and therefore has become quite keen in spotting usable junque… and so can yours.

Tips on shopping wisely:

Think out of the box… if you find the perfect crate but its brown and you want white- paint it!

Walk through your gardens or scan the space you are looking to add a particular element to.
Take photos of the garden/space to help you imagine a piece you may be considering.
Make a list of specific items you want… of course I often discover more that just have to come home with me.
Decide size of item desired, color schemes if applicable, number of items needed, etc.
Think out of the box. If you find the perfect crate but its brown and you want white- paint it! If you want a distressed look, sandpaper will do the trick.

If you stumble upon that perfect element and fall in love, buy it or you’ll always regret it.

Garden Storage Bins and Boxes | Smart Ways to Suppress Garden Eyesores

A messy garden is not a vision to behold and is evidently in dire need of attention. For parents with children, it is often difficult to maintain a neat and orderly lawn. Thankfully, there are storage bins that you can use to remove the clutter. These organizers and bins let you store your tools and unwanted blots, such as your kids’ toys.

Several varieties of garden storage bins and boxes are available to solve your storage problems. What you choose will depend on the things you need to hide, how big your garden is and of course your budget. You can select from plastic boxes, wooden chests, and metal storage. There are also storage options that you can pin on the wall. Perhaps the largest storage that you can buy today is a shed where you can place garden furniture, the lawnmower and other huge stuff. If you want a more petite size, there are smaller boxes that can easily fit rooms or your garage with limited space.

Simple DIY Storage Box Instructions

While there are many sorts of garden storage bins and boxes, you can always make your own. The good news is you don’t need woodworking skills to take on this project. You only have to provide these things:

Screwdriver and screws
Sandpaper
Hinges
Level
Drill and saw
Pencil
Measuring tape
Plywood sheets

Ideally, the plywood sheets should be half an inch thick. Once you have all the materials, you can begin the task. Take the tape measure and decide on the size of your storage box. Write down the depth, width, and height or simply mark the area. Depending on the size, draw four pieces of rectangles or squares on the plywood sheets with your pencil and tape measure. Cut the four out using the saw and remove the cracks or splinters with your sandpaper.

A messy garden is not a vision to behold and is evidently in dire need of attention.

Create a rectangle or square by lining all the pieces up on their sides. Make sure that you have the front and back pieces overlapping the bottom of the side pieces. Drill the arranged box and screw them to finally produce a strong frame. Establish a horizontal plane using your level tool and make sure the frame is even. Again, cut two more rectangles or squares from the plywood sheets. These pieces will serve as the lid and bottom of your homemade storage box. Attach them as before and fasten the hinges on the longer side of the box (the bottom). Do the same with the other end, which is your box’s lid. One hinge section should be on the inner part of the lid while the other should be in the box.

And there you have it – a nice, homemade storage box. It is quick, easy and cheap. Plus, your garden will be finally free from clutter.
