While many of our Members work in natural stone, some homeowners and commercial landscapers prefer the controlled lines provided by manufactured stone. Applications include retaining walls, steps, walkways and even driveways due to the immense durability. Many qualified NHLA landscapers will design and spec out retaining walls of brick, stone, rock or concrete for a client’s consideration. Then, the client makes material and color selections and NHLA member company masons will set to work.

Retaining Wall Design Notes:

Retaining walls are used to provide support to vertically sloping land and represent the top entry into Internet search engines when searching for a local landscape professional. By installing retaining walls, such sloping land can be leveled and hence be of greater use. Plants, trees and gardens can be incorporated into once underutilized land. Properly designed walls have increased property values by as much as 15% as they provide access to additional outdoor spaces where land would otherwise be unusable, a key note for your sales presentations to property owners. In addition to comprehensive masonry construction experience, many NHLA Member companies pursue professional installer certifications by attending industry-sponsored training seminars, becoming authorized contractors for premium brands including Allan Block, Techo-Bloc and Cambridge, to name a few. NHLA member companies often work closely with experienced manufacturer representatives during the planning stages to ensure retaining wall long-term strength.

Who Builds The Best Blocks?

There are essentially two types of pavingstone products manufactured – “color through” one-piece pavers where color is uniformly present from top to bottom and “face mix” pavers where color is concentrated in at the top of the product and adhered to underlying concrete.

What About Sealing Out The Elements?

Sealing the pavers you install can be good for the consumer and profitable for your landscape company. While Cambridge Pavingstone systems use ArmorTec® to protect the blocks, Belgard Pavers are manufactured to the same industry standards as the Cambridge paver and Belgard offers a transferable lifetime warranty on all of its paver and wall products.

To further protect your client’s investment and add a touch of contrast, Belgard has teamed with Techniseal, offering treatments to help prime, clean and protect the exterior surfaces. Available in gloss, wet look, matte, and even invisible finishes, cleaning and sealing provides client benefits in extremely high traffic areas, preventing grease or oil stains on driveways or patios. This is especially important on patios where the cooking occurs. Grease stains are some of the toughest to remove, but may be achieved with Techniseal grease remover, a product NHLA Member companies may offer for sale.

Although snow may still be on the ground, the time is upon us to begin scheduling the spring start-up of irrigation systems and checks of landscape lighting.

Irrigation

We begin our season in late April to ensure completion by June 1st, all in time for the active growing season.

Included in an irrigation start-up is powering up your system from it's source either pump or domestic, checking through each zone for leaks or needed repairs, making adjustments as needed to rotors, sprays, and drip, and programming your controller for the growing season. This process should be followed by monthly monitoring to ensure your system's performance and make controller adjustments as season progresses through times of dry and wet weather conditions.

This is also the perfect time to check your landscape lighting as we can make adjustments to fixture aim, minor bulb replacement or schedule a complete system bulb change, as well as check thoroughly for any damage caused by snow and ice, rodents, or other hazards.

Festive Decorations Greet Visitors to This Year’s WLNH Children’s Auction

Gilford, NH (December 6, 2010) - Belknap Landscape Company Inc. (BLC) is the Lakes Region’s premier landscape design-build firm, providing an unmatched scope of landcare services to area residential and commercial clients throughout all four seasons. This season Belknap Landscape committed to Holiday decorations at the entrances to this year’s WLNH Children’s Auction.

Known for doing such community service efforts in grand style, Belknap Landscape Owner Hayden McLaughlin dedicated manpower and equipment necessary to light up the entrances to the Opechee Conference Center.

Coordinating with the Local Gilford Rotary annual Christmas Tree Sale, McLaughlin’s company is obtaining evergreen trees to mount, light and mulch-in, creating an instant winter wonderland outside the Auction. Additional Hemlocks will be harvested from local BLC properties to add elegance to the display.

“These trees will do double duty,” said McLaughlin, who pledged to provide everything necessary to create such a winter scene. “The trees will provide an attractive welcome to those willing to contribute to the Auction and will be returned to the Gilford Rotary and sold to benefit the Rotary’s ongoing charitable efforts.” And continued “ We will be organizing trucks and employees, obtaining lighting from local stores and building temporary tree stands. It’s our way of saying Thank You to our caring community.”

Trees are selling very quickly - hundreds of 1st quality, fresh-cut Fraser Fir and Balsam trees are available in all shapes and sizes from table top to 12 feet tall and a nice selection of holiday wreaths is on display. All are invited to check out the huge selection and register to win one of 30 special raffle items. The Rotary trailer is open from Noon — 8 pm thru Friday and from 8 am 8 pm Saturday and Sunday at The Lowes parking lot in Gilford.

The Auction receives a great deal of traffic through the rear entrance to the Conference Center as donations are delivered and winning bidders collect Auction items.

New this year is the 2010 Rockin Holiday Bash, a Holiday event to further benefit the Children's Auction. Attendees will be delivered to the Conference Center’s front door via horse & carriage for the Friday night, December 10th dinner and dancing event and enter though the Belknap Landscape Christmas Forest to enjoy the festivities inside. Included are both music by the Eric Grant Band and delicious cuisine by O Steaks and Seafood.

Here BLC Masons apply StoneMakers Vertical on an unsightly poured concrete retaining wall, hand carving a block design into the concrete. Indestructible when finished! Here a granite cap tops off the wall...

As long as you have a solid sub-strate - a solid surface or medium to which Stonemakers™ Vertical is applied, you can run it as high as you want, up to 3” in thickness. Once it is applied you have up to 3 hours to work with it, and you can carve any pattern as deep as the thickness of the application. Some prefer the look of manufactured stone, others like field stone while others like a repetitive cobblestone look. No forms here - all hand sculpted so your vertical wall is the only vertical wall of it's kind!

Our preparation is key. The surface will be scrubbed clean with the appropriate chemicals and rinsed well. If necessary, we will to prep the area with wire mesh, fastened to the wall per the manufacturer's specifications, apply a "bonder" and apply scratch coat and then let cure for 24 hours. We then apply another coat of bonder, let it dry and get ready for the StoneMakers Vertical mix...

Here's another example of an older shorefront property with a retaining wall in need of a face lift. We accomplished this, to the property owner's delight, in just a few days!

StoneMakers Vertical is a rubberized polymer much like soft sand in your hands. Safe to touch, this is mixed with Portland cement and water to a consistency of snowballs. BLC masons will then put the mixture on the wall and let it cure before smoothing it out to the desired thickness. Now they are ready to create pattern chosen by the customer!

We'll cover the entire area with plastic for a day to cure and return to remove the plastic and allow it to dry for four hours before coloring and sealing.

Mauget provides eco-friendly products that restore, maintain and enhance tree health, while preserving the integrity of the environment by providing the most innovative and effective products and application methods. What does Mauget do?

Mauget produces 'Plant Health Injections" to control many insect and disease problems. The products are directly injected into the plants. How? A small hole is drilled at the base of the tree and the pest control liquids are low-pressure dripped into the tree, until fully absorbed. This not only treats the problem more quickly and directly, but is more environmentally friendly than the traditional open air sprays.

Leopord Moths - found right here in the Lakes Region

After treating a local Oak tree and finding one of the huge larve of a leopord Moth, we checked in with the Northeast Plant Diagnostic Network (NEPDN) UN . These moths are common to New England as they they are a woodpeckers favorite food. The larvae do kill young trees. In fact, they attack over 50 different species of trees, Oak and apple the most common targets. If left untreated just one of these incsects can kill a nice tree in your yard or at your business, in weeks time. Will we see the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) in the Lakes Region?

Treatments made as part of the USDA Asian Longhorned Beetle eradication program in Massachusetts and New York were completed in June. We are surrounded! Over 38,000 trees were treated in the Worcester, MA area with inoculations from Mauget. In New York another 39,000 trees were treated by Mauget-Certified applications.

The USDA estimates that there will be about 5 more years of treatment in the Massachusetts area as a small infestation of ALB was found in Jamaica Plain in Massachusetts, just across from the Arnold Arboretum. Six infested maple trees were found so far, in close proximity to each other, and have already been removed by USDA/DCR. Surveys will continue to determine the extent of the infestation...

If the ALB does show it's horns here in NH, depend on Belknap Landscape to provide the best prepared people, Certified to apply proven, safe and effective treatments.

The Northeast mix does say Purple Prairie Clover but this is a wildflower, not clover as I believe your client is thinking. Anything in the mixes can be removed at your discretion. Belknap Landscape has chosen Friday July 9th as their Area Appreciation Night at the baseball field. The public is invited to what is developing into quite a show, all in a show of appreciation for over 2 decades of community support of BLC products and services. Attendees will not only receive free entrance to the game through Belknap Landscape’s website but, will enjoy a host fun activities for the whole family.

Attendees will see field improvements courtesy Belknap landscape employees in conjunction with Laconia’s Parks & Recreation Department, flower garden enhancements around the stadium, a newly planted ceremonial Muskrat tree and more. Those who know BLC Owner Hayden McLaughlin will see if he can still hit the mark with the ceremonial 1st pitch. BLC’s own stonemason Geoffrey Nixon will sings the National Anthem and later lead the crowd in “Take Me Out To The Ballpark”, accompanied by select students from the Laconia High School Band. The Belknap equipment fleet will be on display beyond the fence, popular targets for Muskrat batters.

What about Phosphate in Fertilizers?

The NH LAKES ASSOCIATION initiated legislation during the 2010 session to limit the amount of phosphorous contained in lawn fertilizers sold in New Hampshire, based on the belief that this will limit a major source of overabundant aquatic plant growth, including invasive exotic species like variable milfoil. We know that excessive aquatic plant growth depletes oxygen levels in lakes when the plants decay. Many of us have misconceptions regarding the source of polluting phosphates, and many homeowners unknowingly contribute to the problem. Commercial firms applying fertilizers on a much larger scale must be knowledgeable and careful in the application of phosphate fertilizers.

With proper application, phosphate fertilizer pollution may be minimized. When phosphates are applied to soils, they quickly bind to soil particles, much like a magnet picks up paper clips. Soil-bound phosphates contribute to pollution only when soil erosion occurs and problems arise when fertilizer is over-spread or spilled onto hard surfaces like streets, driveways and sidewalks. There the phosphate washes with rain into lakes and rivers and is know as non-point source pollution. Likewise, grass clippings and leaves that fall on hard surfaces release their phosphorous into water sources. While a few grass clippings mowed into the street look rather innocent, collectively they have a major impact on our water quality. Using a mulching lawn mower to keep lawn clippings on your lawn is especially useful. Belknap Landscape crews will take clippings back to the BLC composting facility as a sustainable resource.

What to Do?

Belknap Landscape, for their part, adheres closely to the NH Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act which prohibits the use of all fertilizers, except limestone, within 25 feet of the of public waters and beyond twenty-five feet, low phosphate, slow release nitrogen fertilizer or limestone are used on lawns or areas with grass. Andrew Morse, the BLC Director of Landscape Management said “Belknap Landscape actually goes further than that, applying only no-phosphate fertilizers to established turf areas, as long as the turf is more than 25 feet from the water”. And continued “In New Hampshire the soils are already rich in phosphorous, so it’s actually a wasted expense for homes and businesses. There are a couple exceptions, including turf starter fertilizers although we are currently experimenting growing new turf areas without using any phosphorus. Our deep root tree fertilizer does contain phosphates, at a 27-9-9 ratio, but we do not apply this treatment near waterways”. Another important source of phosphate pollution comes from soil erosion caused by water or wind. When soil moves, it takes the soil-bound phosphates with it. Construction sites and sparsely vegetated ground also cause erosion. In Lakes Region landscape construction projects, the most likely place to see Belknap Landscape crews at work, you’ll see extra care taken to prohibit site work erosion.

You can take an active part in protecting New Hampshire water quality by keeping fertilizers, leaves and grass clippings off streets and driveways and prevent soil erosion by planting slopes with natural plantings. We all have a part in protecting our water, the economic engine for our Region!

Landscaper's air tools are used to remove soil from huge trees so they may easily be moved (well, easier to move) and planted elsewhere, saving / utilizing a natural resource. Belknap Landscape is one of only a few New England companies using this technology and the story is about moving a large, unique Weeping Norway Spruce...

Belknap Landscape Co. Community Service Continues on Arbor Day...

After a couple days of late April freezing rain & snow, Arbor Day arrives bright sunny and Belknap Landscape's community service initiatives continue.

Earlier in the week, on Earth Day, Hayden McLaughlin, BLC Owner, as a courtesy to the Town of Gilford, prepared and planted the "Liberty Tree". The Liberty Tree, a donated, disease resistant American Elm stands proud with new leaves just now appearing behind the Gilford Fire Station, near the covered Bridge.

The Town organized an informal dedication ceremony today, in conjunction with Arbor Day celebrations around the country.

BLC was invited to attend and assisted local Gilford Girl Scout Troop in hanging a bird house that the Troop members hand-painted and gave to the town, a really neat gesture...

The older Girl Scouts (Cadettes) Bridget Eldridge left, and Helen Jude on the right. The Brownies are Naomi Eldridge and Lucy Jude. Bridget was chosen by the City Council to read the Arobr Day poem.

Right after, in nearby Laconia, BLC staffers use live plants to decorate for a Sunday, May 2nd Lakes Region Zonta Club's Spring & Spirits fundraiser. BLC and other local businesses joined Zonta to help raise funds for area organizations providing services to women and children in need. Spring & Spirits will be held from noon to four at O Steaks & Seafood at the Lake Opechee Inn, including wine and beer tasting, hors d'oeuvres, and a silent auction/raffle of items donated by companies from around the Lakes Region.

Earth Week, 2010: Wow, what a week of community service! Belknap Landscape Company (BLC) conducted three separate community service projects during Earth Week in conjunction with "PLANET" Day Of Service. PLANET is the Professional Landcare Network, an international association serving landcare companies and landscape design-build professionals. By participating in PLANET Day of Service, BLC and industry professionals throughout the nation will unite to demonstrate environmental stewardship by giving back to their communities. BLC contributed the use of a sky crane and operator for the Squam Lakes Association's construction of a new a post & beam structure Youth Activity Barn. the structure, in Holderness, NH is constructed from donated raw timber, milled on site to spec. Meanwhile, BLC staff provided tools, equipment, materials and guidance for Laconia High School students use in dressing up 3 large, neglected flower beds at the entrance to the campus early Earth Day morning in Laconia, NH.

Earth Day efforts continued and Belknap Landscape, led by Owner Hayden McLaughlin, kept giving more environmental education! That afternoon after school, with the assistance of the Gilford High School Environmental Club members, students learned to cultivate the root system and then plant an American Elm dubbed the "Liberty Tree" at the Gilford Fire Station. The dedication of this tree is set for April 30th, Arbor Day.

In the picture, left to right are: Mark Smith, BLC Project Manager, Dale Squires, BLC Marketing Manager, students Christine Drever, Paige Martinez, Roland Dubois, Karen Clark, then Hayden McLaughlin, BLC Owner and Denny Willgoose. The root cultivation process is accomplished with a compressed air powered landscaper's 'Air Spade'. BLC is one of the only Lakes Region landcare companies to make such an investment to insure long-term, healthy tree plantings. Such a tool removes compacted soils from the roots, exposes shattered and decaying roots (from previous digging) and allows arborists to trim roots forced to girdle the root ball when contained in the wire cage and burlap bag.

Focus on Safety Continues...

Belknap Landscape's intense focus on Employee Safety as the primary aspect of our daily work schedule continues. BLC showed this to us by the investment made in the Commercial Vehicle Driver Refresher Course for those employees who drive a company vehicle, followed by a General Driver's Education session and First Responder's training - both at the 2010 Employee Orientation.

Employee safety training expanded further this week with training on the proper use of a Fire Extinguisher - on a live fire!

Lieutenant Rick Andrews of Gilford Professional Fire Fighters Local 3517 lead the training class, assisted by three other firefighters and specially designed propane-fed practice fire equipment. Those attending the 1st session learned...

All fires can be very dangerous and life-threatening. Your safety should always be your primary concern when attempting to fight a fire. Before deciding to fight a fire, be certain that:

The 911 operator has been called
Everyone is clear of the fire / out of the structure
The fire is small and not spreading - fires double in size within two to three minutes
You have the proper fire extinguisher for the burning material

How to Fight a Fire Safely:

AFTER Dialing 911
Pull the safety pin
Ensure your fire extinguisher works with a quick squeeze
Always approach the fire with an exit at your back and upwind of the fire and smoke
Aim at the base of the fire and use a sweeping motion
Don't turn your back on the fire when exiting
Be sure to watch the area for awhile to ensure it doesn't re-ignite.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a point system where verifiable sustainable landscape design practices earn "points" for the property owner. Generally, the more LEED points a property earns, the lower its carbon footprint, the lower it's operating costs and the higher it's re-sale value. The intent is to design landscape features to minimize demand for water and synthetic chemicals. Plants must be non-invasive, drought tolerant species and turf is both limited and drought tolerant.

A healthy lawn is of utmost importance to our environment. A 50-foot by 50-foot lawn produces enough oxygen for a family of four!

Lawns cool the atmosphere. Eight healthy front lawns have the cooling effect of 70 tons of air conditioning, which is enough for 16 average homes.

Grass converts carbon dioxide to oxygen, a process that helps clear the air.

Locals Join Forces, Raising Money To Replace Aging Playground Equipment...

More info on the LRCC Daycare playground in the BLC News Section Belknap Landscape Company recently offered their landscape design-build skills and construction services, along with the BLC marketing horsepower, to the Elm Street Elementary School in Laconia, NH. The Lakeport Community Association, a private catering company and now BLC, among others, have all joined forces to help the Elm Street School PTO raise money to replace aging playground equipment.

A group of PTO members and concerned parents formed an offshoot of the PTO called Volunteers In Service To Elm Street School - know locally as "VISTESS". Elm Street principal Eric Johnson and PTO President Trish Poliquin are spearheading this effort. PTO and VISTESS head Trish Poliquin said the organization hopes to raise $50,000 for the playground equipment.

"The playground equipment has been there a long time, as evidenced by parent's comments that, as children at the same Elm Street School, they played on the very same equipment" said Poliquin, who continued "Some of the wooden play equipment has started to rot and the metal equipment - like the the jungle gyms - are rusting. We also need help with drainage, especially under the swing sets".

The next fundraiser is a raffle of sports paraphernalia which has been organized by VISTESS volunteer Kara Stanley. (for more information contact Kara at Kstanley@gaa.net)

Over Thirty Years of Preserving Loons and Their Habitats In New Hampshire - Belknap Landscape continues to support this worthy environmental cause...
The Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) was created in 1975 in response to concerns about a dramatically declining loon population and the effects of human activities on loons. LPC’s mission is to restore and maintain a healthy population of loons throughout New Hampshire; to monitor the health and productivity of loon populations as sentinels of environmental quality; and to promote a greater understanding of loons and the larger natural world.

For 34 years, the Loon Preservation Committee has undertaken state-wide monitoring, research, management and outreach to preserve loons and their habitats. LPC staff and a large grassroots network of over 1,500 members and volunteers work to:

Monitor the number and breeding success of loons to identify trends and areas of concern;

Band loons to study their life history;

Rescue sick or injured loons to be rehabilitated and released;

Recover dead loons and non-viable eggs to determine contaminant levels and causes of death;

Quantify the challenges facing loons, and our success in helping loons cope with them;

Digitally map loon nesting and nursery sites to identify and protect critical habitat;

Build and float nesting rafts, and protect nesting loons on rafts and on natural nest sites;

Educate the public about loons through exhibits, presentations to schools and other groups, summer programs, signs, our website, and The Loon Center in Moultonborough;

Increase awareness and appreciation for loons and other wildlife in New Hampshire

Implement all of the above as part of a comprehensive Loon Recovery Plan to ensure the long-term viability of New Hampshire’s loon population.
