Fox Brothers and The Merchant Fox

Fox Brothers is a quintessentially British wool and flannel mill. One of only a few working cloth mills in the UK today, Fox Brothers provides an interesting insight into a British business which centres itself around British design and high quality craftsmanship.

In the summer of 2011, we worked with One Nine Zero Six, a new menswear brand. They commissioned Fox Brothers to produce a bespoke fabric that became known as Raw Flannel. We made a screen print for the launch of their first collection, which depicted a pattern inspired by Fox Brothers’ flannel.

In October 2012, we exhibited at a new design exhibition, Best of Britannia, which showcases new, British design. We met Douglas Cordeaux, one of Fox Brothers’ co-owners, who was exhibiting there as part of their new online retailer and complementary business, The Merchant Fox.

Pashley Cycles

Pashley are Britain’s longest established bike manufacturer. Many other bicycle companies have turned to overseas production in search of cheaper costs, risking the quality and reputation of their brand. Pashley are one of only three bicycle manufacturers left in England today. Their bikes don’t come cheap, so what is it that makes you invest in one? Today they are particularly trendy, with continual celebrity endorsement. The image of a Pashley bike is often regarded as an epitome of Britishness.

Founded in 1926 by William ‘Rath’ Pashley, a dispatch rider in the First World War, Pashley are now based in Stratford-upon-Avon, having been originally set up in Birmingham, where almost every component was made in their own factory.

Sunspel

‘Modern everyday luxury’ is the ethos of Sunspel, the Nottingham-based manufacturer of luxury cotton clothes. The company was founded by Thomas A. Hill in 1860, a hugely successful textile entrepreneur. His aim was to create simple luxury clothes using the best quality materials he could source. This approach rendered him a pioneer in British craftsmanship.

History and heritage are two important concepts which Sunspel pride themselves on. Similar to Lane, Sunspel was founded in Nottingham, having set up its first factory in the Newdigate area of Nottingham city centre. The Newdigate area was once an interesting part of the city which housed many factories, some of which were particularly involved in the local lace industry. For many years the area lay derelict and now this historical manufacturing part of the city is steadily being replaced by student flats, migrant restaurants and food shops and designers’ and artists’ studios such as our home, Primary studios.

John Smedley is a British clothing company that manufactures in the same mill in which they began in 1784, in their Lea Mills factory in Matlock, Derbyshire, not too far from where we work in Nottingham.

John Smedley are proud to design and make all of their products in England and are particularly proud of its Derbyshire roots. Today, John Smedley consists of four generations of Smedley sons who have continually endeavoured to provide good design through relying on Great British craftsmanship.

Margaret Howell is a British fashion designer who began as the pioneer of workwear for women in the 1970s, designing clothes to be functional. She is a proud supporter of the British industry, investing in and sourcing high-quality materials and manufacturing.

When Lane exhibited at the Best of Britannia design exhibition in Clerkenwell, London, in October 2012, we met Jo Barber of Margaret Howell who was in interested in our products. Best of Britannia is a curated exhibition of designers and brands who make products in the UK, which we were delighted to be a part of and which allowed us to launch our new range. BOB is an exhibition which celebrates the history of British craftsmanship, something which Lane is keen to pursue, following Margaret Howell’s example.

Gio Ponti’s Parco dei Principi

It’s often difficult to write about somewhere you’ve never been. But after a day of studying its images, I feel as if I’ve spent a week at Parco dei Principi, the hotel that Gio Ponti designed in Sorrento, Italy. The hotel is so well documented, not only because of Gio Ponti’s reputation, its architecture and its interior decoration, but mainly because of its whole inspiring aesthetic. The ceramic patterns on the hotel’s floors are what have drawn me in, having browsed hundreds of images of the Italian building. The tiles are certainly its most beautiful element.

Gio Ponti is one of Italy’s most credible designers from the twentieth century, having successfully tried his hand at a plethora of different crafts – architecture, furniture design, household products and ceramics are just a few of the trades in to which he delved.

In October we were extremely proud to be part of the first Best of Britannia show at the beautiful Farmiloe Building near Smithfield Market, Clerkenwell, London.

Best of Britannia is a carefully curated exhibition of British brands showing products designed and made exclusively in the UK, and that suited us down to the ground.

From top to bottom the exhibitor list read as a tightly curated and wide ranging who’s who and what’s what of current and classic British brands. From the well-established right through to brand-new independent designers and makers – BOB is geared to celebrating the quality and diversity of UK design and manufacture across all sectors.

If you ever doubted that UK design and manufacture is of world class standard, BOB is here to show you just how wrong you are.
