ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION

English pronunciation can be tricky indeed—but there are numerous ways to practice and numerous resources to help guide you. Many of the resources are free, online, and right at your fingertips and specialize in those learning the language pronunciation for the first time with English as a second language.

ESL pronunciation can be even more confusing when the English words have the same letters as another language but an entirely different way to combine them and an entirely different sound. One glaring example is with French, where the word for dog is chien. “Chien” is pronounced with a soft beginning sound, a diphthong vowel sound in the middle and only a hint of a nasal n at the end. French speakers would therefore say something like “shee-yehn.”

Switch that same word, chien, to an English pronunciation and it ends up with a harder initial sound, like in chuck, and a prominent final n. This would give you something like “chi-enn.”

There are also many words that have the same vowel pronunciation but use different combinations of vowels to produce those sounds. A few examples of those include reign, in which the “ei” sounds like “ay,” plane, where the “a” sounds like “ay,” and maim, where the “ai” sounds like “ay.” Yes, English pronunciation can be complicated.

But do not fret. Learning English pronunciation can be achieved through a lot of practice and a lot of listening. If possible, get recordings of books and read along while you look at the text. Mark any words that give you trouble as you move along. Listen to newscasts, radio broadcasts and TV to grasp more of the sounds.

Myriad websites offer different types of lessons some that include written, oral and listening drills. Flashcards are another good way to learn English pronunciation, as long as you practice with someone who pronounces things correctly.

Once you get used to the general rules, you’ll be able to pronounce words you’ve never heard before—unless they fall into the pronunciation exceptions. In that case, you’ll want more flashcards.

Note: Even though you know the vocabulary and the endless grammar rules, you still find it difficult to pronounce English words correctly, this struggle with language can make communicating with native English speakers a frustrating experience for both you and them

ENGLISH: THE GLOBAL LANGUAGE

For many years now we have been referring to English as a global language....as the language of communication and technology. Everybody seems to be learning English and it isn't uncommon to see English being used as a means of communication between....let’s see...a German scientist....And an Italian politician. These days...if you don’t know English, you are in danger of being excluded from what’s going on...in education, at work ... and especially in the world of technological advances.

Very soon English will be the second language of all the people in the world. This is happening while I am speaking to you. We can’t be certain of how long the process will take but there is no doubt that it will happen ...and my bet is that it will happen sooner rather than later.

First of all English will be an obligatory subject on every school curriculum throughout the world. By the year 2010 around two billion people...that’s about a third of the World’s population.....Will speak English as their second language. This isn't my prediction by the way. This is what the experts say.

We can see evidence of these changes all the time. Let’s take the Eurovision Song Contest as an example. Whatever we might think of the contest itself....one thing that has changed recently is that now countries can opt to sing in English. In the last festival fourteen of the twenty five competing countries asked for the rules to be changed to allow them to sing in English. They argued that singing in their own language would put them at a disadvantage. I suspect that in a few years time all twenty-five countries will be singing in English.

And what exactly does all of this mean for native speakers of English? Well, we are already in a minority. If the calculations are correct, then in ten years time, majority speakers ... that is non native English speakers...will outnumber native English speakers by four to one. The two most important English’s won’t be British English and American English. They’ll be Native English and Majority English. So native English speakers will be handicapped. We will be the only people in the world who speak just one language. Because ...let’s face it ...there won’t be much of a reason for native English speakers to learn a second language. We...and not the Majority English speakers...will be the disadvantaged.

As more and more people speak English it makes sense that they will become more competent. They will start to control more of the English resources being produced and to have a say in what should or shouldn't be included in dictionaries and language books. This might seem far fetched but it is already starting to happen. Let’s use Sweden as an example. Their music exports....predominantly English...account for more than thirty per cent of its export income. This exported English is bound to have an effect on English in general. And this is just one small example.

So...all of you native English speakers out there...get ready to throw away your phrase books...whether you’re planning to visit Eastern Europe or the Himalayas...one thing you won’t have to worry about is the language!

Vocabulary

Leaning the English vocabulary is something that many people need to do when they are visiting the United States. There are great English vocabulary tips that you can find in a book. Your nearest bookstore will have a great little American English dictionary that will make learning it very easy. Check out all the different books that are offered before making the decision on which one you want. You might want several different ones.

Developing English vocabulary will take a little bit of time. The best thing to do when you learn English vocabulary is to take an hour each day to go over several different vocabulary lessons. The more time you spend on it the easier it becomes.

Once you know the basics of the English vocabulary you will be able to speak it fairly well. Whenever you don’t understand someone that speaks English, simply ask them to repeat it. The more you hear English the better you will become at speaking it.

The more you practice English, the better you will become. Conversing will soon be easier for you. A class is a great way to learn the English language. When you have a teacher they can take individual time with you so that you can learn the language and use it very well.

There are several ways that you can find a good place to teach you English. You can try searching online and also you can ask around at a college or other school in your area. They will know where you can find a great class to learn English.

Many people teach themselves English by using a tape. With a tape you will learn to speak by listening to the words and repeating them. If you plan to learn English this way, you can do so at any time. While you are driving or just relaxing you can listen to the tape and repeat the words. Soon you will know the English language and at your own speed. Once you learn it, speaking it will become easier and easier.

Listening

Listening skills are an essential part of any language. There are several things one can do for English listening practice. One of the most common ways to do this is to watch movies. Whether they are dubbed in your native language or not, it is useful to hear the natural speed in which native English speakers speak. Your English listening will improve in no time with this method to increase the challenge and difficulty of your listening, start listening to a wide variety of songs in English. Without the video in the background, the speed changes, or even the music in the background, this makes for very challenging English listening.

If these are not available there are more innovative ways to get listening skills in. Download short stories off the Internet and read them out loud to yourself or a partner. These will help both speaking and listening skills.

A tricky thing that comes up often in English listening practice is a homonym. These are words that are pronounced or spelt the same, but have different meanings. A good English listening exercise will have several of these, which you should be able to figure out from the context of the narrative. For ESL listening, these should be practiced often until the meanings of context are understood.

Remember, a good vocabulary is the base of good listening. Free listening English tapes from the library, bookstore or audio MP3s on the Internet can help with increasing the base vocabulary in any specialty. If you realize that English listening is difficult, it might be good to refresh with these.

Improve your English Listening with Songs
Using English songs is a fun way to expand your English vocabulary and improve your listening.
Get a song first. Most of you probably already have a favorite song in English, but if you don't have one, start listening to for example Live365 or SHOUTcast online radio.
These radio stations show the artist and title while a song is playing. Once you've selected your song, buy your own copy or find it on YouTube and download it with the free Real Player Download
Use the lyrics. Play the song a few times and try to write down the text. To check whether you heard it right you need the lyrics (song text). There are many web sites to download the lyrics.
Find the meaning. Looking up the song meaning can help you understand the song better. Try to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context ("context clue"). If you still have no idea, use a learner's or slang dictionary to find the meaning.
Sing along. Now play the song again and sing along, so that you also practice the pronunciation of your song. A karaoke version of the video may be available online.
