LionBridge is recruiting work-based workers all over the world. One of the many services they offer is to help companies improve user experiences on their website search.

I am going to dissipate your doubts right now: No, LionBridge is not a scam.

What is an Internet assessor?

Thank you for asking. An internet assessor is a rater, his role involves evaluating results of a web search, for appropriateness to search query input. For example, if someone type on a search engine "Cat food" and lands to a page that talks about "selling websites", obviously the landing page is not relevant, then the Internet assessor as to evaluate it as not relevant. Or the page that comes up is a porn page, then the internet assessor must flag it. That one king of evaluation. That's pretty much what you will have to do, the company will give you the guidelines to teach you how to evaluate and all the tools that you need.

I worked as an Internet assessor for a similar company, and I didn't have any problem with them. If you study your guidelines, you will learn how to be a good Internet assessor and hopefully will be able to keep the job for a while.

You will be hired as a contractor and will be paid about $14.50/hour.

They accept people all over the world, what you need is a computer with a high-speed internet connection.

Check their website for more information.

Download our FREE Toolbar for Languages Lovers

I thought that it was a little to late for my older son because I thought that the window was from birth to 5.

Like I've already said (read part 1), I am raising 2 bilingual children ... a 5 years-old and a 9 months old baby. My five years old son understands almost 80% on what I said in French but don't want to speak French ... I think that the main reason is because of fear.

One day I asked him why he doesn't want to count in Spanish and French in front of people other than me (he can count up to 100 in English and up to 10 in Spanish and French), he told me "because people are going to laugh at me".

Generally, my son is very talkative (like his daddy) and when telemarketers call, he says: "wait, let's me talk!" and he tries to tell them about his transformers or Thomas the tank engine or whatever comes in his mind ... but when my mother calls on the phone and tries to have a conversation with him in French ... he is completely frozen and gives me the phone as quickly as he can because my mother can only speak French.

I don't pressure him and I don't do anything to make him feel uncomfortable or neglected when I am talking to the baby. He is involved and we laugh together. It's very important to respect a child and to wait when he is ready to introduce a new skill. When a child is manipulated, he feels frustration and may hate that new skill later on whereas when he is ready, he is relaxed, have fun and learn better.

My son has a very analytical mind, he wants to know the purpose of everything. Last month, he asked me why God has to create mosquitoes ... I am not sure that I gave an accurate answer to this one but when he asked me why I have to speak French to the baby, I tried to answer the best that I could. He started to eat his vegetables without complaining the day I gave him an answer when he asked me why he has to eat vegetables because vegetables are nasty.

He has to understand everything before he cooperates ... it's the way my little boy functions. I don't know if mosquitoes will be his best friends a day but I know that he become more and more open when I talk about the French language. Dora the explorer doesn't speak French but Spanish so he didn't understand why he has to learn French.

Now that his little analytical mind is satisfied ... he becomes more en more interested and involved when I speak French to the baby ... he asks so many questions about the French language and understand that French is my first language, is a part of me ... Yesterday morning, he told me ... "Mommy, I want to learn French!"

Download our FREE Toolbar for Languages Lovers

The "main" language was French. My parents have never encouraged us to speak and learn Creole because they thought that it was useless since the official language in my country is French. Even when my mom spoke in Creole, always we responded in French. When I was in elementary school and Junior high, my best friend spoke only Creole with me and I responded in French.

I learned Creole by hearing my parents and most of all outside my house. I was able to understand it but didn't speak it before I was twenty years old when I was a student in college and when I lived in France. I started to speak it to tell jokes with friends but not really in a regular conversation.

In Miami, when I find some Haitians, I speak Creole with them and I am very fluent in it (speaking, understanding and reading it). I was surprised to see that Haitian Creole was so popular, that Haitian Creole is an option like Spanish when you want to contact the customer service of some companies and administrations on the phone. In my country, some linguists and Creole lovers fought during years for a better integration of Creole and have implement Creole studies and degrees for University students.

When I told my mother how well Haitian Creole was integrated in certain administrations in certain areas of Miami, and there are companies looking for bilingual Creole-French to hire, she was totally surprised! I come from a French Department overseas and the fighters for the proper recognition of Creole as a language have to deal with so many obstacles and hostility. My mother told me that if she knew, she would teach me. I told mom it's okay, I am fully fluent in the Creole language and I know that she did what she thought was the best for me.

My sisters did the same thing that my mother did. The "main" language was French in the house but my nephews and nieces learned Creole at school interacting with other kids and their surroundings. In the French educational system, they don't teach Creole before University (for those who want to pursue a degree in Creole).

If the parents fail to teach their kids another language (like my mom did), the children can learn another language outside the house if they are immersed into an environment where the language is spoken. They have to be immersed ... children figure out the patterns of the spoken language by hearing it often and then, will be able to communicate with that language.

Download our FREE Toolbar for Languages Lovers

In particular, compared to adult language learners. Lena Sandvik in Boston says “I’m amazed that my 15 and 11 year olds have grown up to be completely bilingual. My accent and those silly, grammatical errors still haven’t disappeared, even after 15 years in the country.” As easy as acquiring multiple languages is for small children, the single most important factor in language learning is the quantity of spoken language addressed to the child. So, if you worry that you aren’t providing enough, here are a few tricks to boost your superhero’s inherent powers.

Other kids: Join (or start) a playgroup for the second language. Children of all ages will learn from each other; there simply are no better language teachers than other kids. An added bonus will be that you will connect with other parents of bilingual
children.

Books: Of course you know how vital those precious one-on-one moments are, but remember that they can be infused with language learning also. Books are the most effective tool for teaching language, and so I advise all parents: “Start reading at birth and never stop!” A good way to add to reading time (and make it really personal) is to create a dialogue, encouraging your child's comments, responses, and elaborations. Talk about what the characters are like and what they might be doing next.

The right stuff: From books, add video, television and games. There are a multitude of aides towards fluency. In particular, games that use rhyming will make the most of language memory, but “I Spy”, “Bingo” and “Memory” with picture cards will also playfully build vocabulary.

Sing and dance: Children absolutely love music, but don't rely solely on recorded music; your own singing, even if it is off-key, will still serve to unite melody and words for your child more surely than any professional recording ever could. Melody is also a fantastic memory aid. Think about how much easier children learn their ABCs when they sing them, compared to just reciting them. And, the combination of music with movement and gestures will enliven it all -- as well as provide a nice outlet for squirmy toddlers.

Tap into their interests: Whatever your child’s enthusiasms may be -- whether a love of soccer, dance, or horses -- make an effort to ‘involve’ these passions in the minority language. ”My 3-year old son is a really big “Bob de Bouwer” (Bob the Builder) fan,” says Martijn Fredriks. “So now we always watch it in Dutch, and he’s even started speaking in Dutch when he plays with the Bob the Builder toys.”

Be creative: The trick is to give the child lots to talk about, so draw out that conversation! Encourage them to make up their own stories, play dress-up and pretend in the second language. Even painting, working with sidewalk chalk, or molding clay usually creates more vocabulary than art! Older children may enjoy calling or using a webcam for calls overseas (one such free service is
Skype).

Outside the box: Isabella Vellaccio, a mother in Washington DC, who reached beyond the obvious says, “I wanted my son to hear Italian from someone else than just me, and the playgroups were all during my working hours.” Isabella decided to attend the church coffee after the Italian mass on Sundays. “The older Italian parishioners were thrilled to see him learn Italian.” Needless to say, with that much attention, and Italian cookies, he loved it.”

Baby sitter: Find a college student who speaks the language, or for something more consistent, try a nanny or an au-pair.

Visits: The ultimate language boost is to visit the country where it is spoken. Total immersion for a couple of weeks has an amazing effect. And visits from friends or family also provide a valuable boost.

Enthusiasm: While the quantity of spoken language is the most important factor in learning a language, the second most vital ingredient is the amount of positive feedback the child hears. Early on, when a child is struggling to get those first syllables out, resist the urge to correct…it can actually inhibit language skills.

There is a myriad of ways to ensure that foreign language time is “quality time,” but like any other aspect of parenting: trust your judgment, employ your imagination, and listen very, very well.

Christina Bosemark is the founder of Multilingual Children’s Association, http://www.multilingualchildren.org, the definitive guide to raising bilingual children featuring expert advice and real world wisdom with parent discussions, tips, articles, a resource directory and more. All of his new words are French, and from what I can tell he understands me completely.” Not even two months into her campaign to raise her two children speaking French as well as English, Sheilagh Margot Riordan in Forida has noticed a dramatic difference in the progress between her two children: “My three and a half year old is much trickier. Even though I speak only French to her, she replies in English, but I guess that she understands about 70% of everything I say.” Frankly, Sheilagh worries that it’s already too late for her over-the-hill three-year-old to become a fluent bilingual.

In our culture it sometimes feels that if you didn’t spring for ballet lessons at two or violin at three, it’s all over. While there’s no doubt that the optimal moment to start learning languages is at birth, it’s not at all impossible to achieve fluency later in life. The more language interaction you provide, the more dramatic the progress, and the easier for the child. Even older children are still kids, and they’ll remain chatty and unhampered by self-consciousness. Still, transitioning into multilingualism will require motivation; here are several tried-and-true tips.

You know how when you announce that it’s bedtime, your kid says, “Why?” You’ll get the same reaction to your new language program. "Why do I have to say it in Korean if I know how say it in English already?" This is a fair question, and the answer needs to be either one of necessity, fun, or flattery. Not much else will fly. Here are some possible answers: “Because I/granny/everyone else here only speak Korean.” “This book/this game/this song is in Korean.” “Because you did it sooo well yesterday.” “So you can teach it to baby Ethan when he is a big boy like you.” “So you and Greg can have your own secret language.”

After the explanation your next step will be to speak only in the minority language yourself (or nanny, or whoever is your child’s primary language source). When you get confusion and glazed looks, translate. And, be reasonable; accept replies in the primary language when you first start out.

(*) When your child answers back in the community language, say "Yes," and then repeat the sentence in the minority language.

(*) If you know your child is able to say a particular word, but is struggling to remember it, jog her memory by providing the first syllable.

(*) Be careful not to dampen her enthusiasm. Don’t make speaking the second language an inflexible rule or something that becomes onerous.

(*) You’ll just inspire revolution in the ranks. You might require adherence to the language rules you’ve set up if you know she has the vocabulary – just as you demand ‘pleases’ and ‘thank yous.’ For example, when you’re child is asking for a glass of milk, you can require that she ask for it in the minority language. But if she's excited about telling you what happened at the circus, just listen, and then repeat it back in the second language. That way, you provide her the missing vocabulary in a positive way.

(*) And, as always, praise endlessly. Even when you are providing translations or the child has just issued sixteen grammatical errors in a four-word sentence. In fact, a child simply doesn’t understand if you try to correct her before the age of three. Instead, just repeat the words correctly (a process known as modeling). Alternatively, you can make a joke and say, "Oops, that came out wrong!" Laugh and provide the right way of saying it, so you keep it playful rather than corrective.

Countless parents have asked me: "So now, how do we now stay firm with our new language system?" Once the child has the vocabulary to understand the second language, sticking to the language strategy is essential -- if you don’t, you’re back to square one and the community language! Just think of the things you could never let your child do, even if she begs, whines, and tantrums: things such as riding in a car without a seatbelt, not brushing her teeth, or crossing the street by herself. Don’t negotiate about using the language any more than you do about these things, and she will get the picture eventually -- despite the occasional earful. Give it at least six months, and your persistence will be richly rewarded.

Sheilagh says that she realizes her trouble is well worth it and has stopped worrying about beginning too late: “Instead of looking at the things I should have done (speak French since birth), I am looking at the great achievements we have made so far.”
About the Author:
Christina Bosemark is the founder of Multilingual Children’s Association, the definitive guide to raising bilingual children featuring expert advice and real world wisdom with parent discussions, tips, articles, a resource directory and more. Oh, I see -- both Swedish and English. Doesn’t that get awfully confusing? Swedish, you said -- when will she use that?” Get used to hearing these kinds of things. You’ll get opinions from the barista at Starbucks, your mother-in-law, even your neighbors and strangers on the street. Remember, being a trendsetter always ruffles some feathers, and the best way to deal with unsolicited advice (other than running for the door) is to know the facts for yourself.

Here are the most persistent myths on raising bilingual children:

“Your child will be confused by learning more than one language.”

This belief is prevalent in monolingual countries and has far more politics than science to back it up. Rest assured that your child's little brain has more than enough neurons firing to cope with two languages (or even more) without frizzing out. On the contrary, decades of research in countless studies actually show significant cognitive advantages to being multilingual. And what about the experience of millions of families around the world where multilingualism is the norm, not the exception? Just look at Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, and Finland -- to mention a few.

“I can see two languages, maybe, but more than that is too much.”

Considering how much babies have to learn in their first years of life, another language really doesn't add much to the load. As long the child is getting regular interactions in the second (or third) language, there won’t be problems. There is a reason why a two-year old child has fifty percent more synapses than an adult! Also, even if your child does not end up speaking all the languages, don’t underestimate the value of a passive language, i.e. understanding it but not yet speaking it. If you already understand a language it is magnitudes easier to learn it later in school or as an adult, compared to someone who’d never heard it before. So, even ‘just’ understanding another language is definitely not a wasted effort.

“Your kid is going to get all these languages mixed up.”

It is true that some mixing will occur, but that is both harmless and temporary. As the child builds her vocabulary in each language, this phenomenon automatically disappears. How many monolingual children automatically fix mistakes after correct usage has been learned?

For example, children begin by saying things like “Me want,” when they mean "I want." And how many of them are still saying, “Me want,” at five? Eventually, the multilingual child learns correct usage in the same fashion as any other child. If you don’t mix languages in your own conversation, it’ll make it much simpler for your child to remain consistent as well.

“Why start now? Later your kid will pick it up in no time.”

For all those who think it’s a huge intellectual burden on your child to grow up with multiple languages, there’ll be those who will tell you how easy it is. “Just go to a Spanish playgroup once a week. You don’t have to speak it yourself to her all the time!” This is highly unrealistic. Studies indicate that children need exposure to a different language about one third of their waking hours to become actively bilingual. They’ll understand a lot with less interaction, but they probably won’t be able to speak it themselves. Learning a second language is simple for children, relative to adults, but a child needs to hear a word thousands of times in all kinds of contexts before it sticks -- unless it’s a bad word, then miraculously you only have to say it once…

“Reading and writing in several languages? Some kids can’t even handle that in one language.”

It’s true that many children have difficulties reading and writing well. However, reading and writing is a ‘coding / decoding’ process and is not linked to the number of languages a child speaks, as such -- although it could involve multiple alphabets, and then be a bit more work. Interestingly enough, access to multiple languages actually makes it easier for children to understand the nature of language itself, which, in turn, improves overall literacy skills. Research supports what many parents have long felt: that multilingual children have better-developed linguistic understanding.

Still, if you are in a hurry or find that politely ignoring the groundless opinions thrown your way doesn’t work, you can always ask if they think Einstein’s intellect suffered growing up with both German and Italian. And, he didn’t start talking until he was three years old either, but he certainly seemed to make up for lost time.

About the Author:
Christina Bosemark is the founder of Multilingual Children’s Association, the definitive guide to raising bilingual children featuring expert advice and real world wisdom with parent discussions, tips, articles, a resource directory and more. My objective is to raise them bilingual French and English. My husband speaks only English. My first objective was to raise them trilingual (Spanish, French and English) but I found it will be difficult for me to handle both languages (Spanish and French) at the same time while my husband and others handle the English language.

I will stick with only 2 languages for now.

I am surrounded with bilingual people ... all my friends are at least bilingual, some of them are parents of bilingual and multilingual children, then I learn a lot from them.

Now, my 5 year old son doesn't want to speak French. He understands everything I say, translate what I say into English and respond in English. For example, if I say: "Eteins la lumière!", he says: "You said to turn off the light".

Many parents are confronted with this issue. In my case, I don't know what to do unless wait that the child is ready. Meanwhile, I speak French to my 7 months old baby.

The mistake I made with my 5 years old is I haven't been consistent enough with the French. I talked to him in English, so he didn't make any effort to speak French.

It is recommended than one parent speaks one language and the other parent speaks another one, and they have to be committed to do so.

Download our FREE Toolbar for Languages Lovers

According to the author, websites should be translated at least in 10 different languages to reach out more customers worldwide since customers like to access information in their own language. The languages are: English, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, German, Korean, French, Italian, Russian and Portuguese.

I have seen bilingual e-commerce websites translates with machine translation. I figured out if the company can't pay a professional to translate his website that's mean it doesn't take his company seriously so I don't have to do business with him.

If you are serious about your business and want to reach a larger audience, you have to read this book. You can read more review on the customer reviews forum.

Download our FREE Toolbar for Languages Lovers

When I get back to the first person (who speaks English), I got confused ... then, I speak Spanish, French or whatever and I mix up languages. It takes a few minutes before I realize that I English is the language that I have to speak.

I only mix up languages in this kind of situations ... when my mind is solicited (too much) to use a lot of languages simultaneously ... when the mental translation is done rapidly.

It happens to me also, when I am stressed, angry, and voluntarily I don't bother to use the proper language but my native language because the word looks most powerful in my language.

Sometimes, it can create funny situations when you speak to someone in the language that you suppose to interpret for him.

I know that I can find at least someone who can share a similar experience.

Download our FREE Toolbar for Languages Lovers
