It is celebrated on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which this year falls on November 11-13.

During the festival, people set afloat (“loi”) a "krathong" – a raft made out of banana leaves, decorated with flowers, candles, incense sticks and some coins – while making a wish. The tradition of Loy Krathong in Thailand goes back to a romance in the Sukothai era in the 13th century. According to the legend, Nang Noppamas, a royal consort of King Ramkhamhaeng (the founder of Sukhothai), made the first krathong, setting it afloat on one of the canals of the palace so that it would drift past her lover the king. The king was delighted with the creation, and thus was the origins of the saying that if two lovers release a krathong and it stays afloat until out of sight, their love will last forever. Apart from the romantic interpretation, the act of floating away the krathong is symbolic of letting go of all one's bad virtues and sins, so that one can start life afresh on a better foot. Many Thai people believe that it will bring good luck, and they do it to venerate the Buddha with light (the candle on the tray) and to pay homage to the Goddess of Water.

In Chiang Mai, the Loy Krathong festival is traditionally accompanied by the “Yi Peng Lantern Festival”, where hot-air lantern balloons (“Khom Fai”) made of paper are launched into the night sky, seemingly filling the sky with thousands of brightly shining stars. Traditional belief has it that when these balloons are set adrift and floated away, so do the troubles of the people who launched them.

Another important part of the festivities is the parade of giant krathongs from Thapae Gate to the riverside, where one can also get a glimpse at the contestants to the “Noppamas Queen Contest”, the traditional Loy Krathong beauty contest which refers to the romantic origins of the festival back in the Sukhothai era.

Map Sabai Vol.39

In this month's edition of Map Sabai (Vol.39)

Cover Photo:

Plenty of Vegetables for Vegetarian Days at Warorot Market

Feature Story:

Vegetarian Days in Chiang Mai

Art Space:

Featured Artist: Santi Vipaka

Feature:

Vegetarian Days in Chiang Mai

For those of us who prefer the vegetarian way of life, Chiang Mai offers plenty of opportunities this month to indulge in meatless cuisine with ease and pleasure. Broadly speaking, there are two main forms of vegetarian food commonly available:
‘Aharn mang-sa-wi-rat’ (อาหาร มังสะวิรัด), as widely known in the West, does not contain meats, but can include eggs and milk products. It is available in many vegetarian-friendly restaurants throughout Chiang Mai, as well as in ordinary restaurants upon special order.

‘Aharn je’ (อาหาร เจ ), on the other hand, is similar to vegan food and particularly popular among Thai people. Strongly influenced by Chinese tradition, this type of food goes beyond meatless cuisine, in that it does not contain any products derived from animals, nor garlic or onions. People who follow this diet do so not only for health reasons but also as part of their spiritual practice, as it is believed to cleanse both body and mind.

The Vegetarian Days to a large extent have their roots in spiritual tradition, as the festival also marks the end of the Buddhist Lent, the traditional three-month rainy season retreat during which Buddhists ought to adopt a more ascetic life-style, renouncing meat, alcohol and smoking. Correspondingly, the type of vegetarian food typically consumed during this time is ‘Aharn je’.

Whether or not one is vegetarian or shares the aforementioned beliefs, ‘Aharn je’ provides a tasty alternative to ordinary food once in a while. It is widely available throughout Chiang Mai in specially designated restaurants easy to recognize by their yellow-red signs outside.

Map Sabai Vol. 38

In this month's edition of Map Sabai (Vol.38)

Cover Photo: Having a break in the jungle

Northern Attractions

Horse Riding in the jungle of Northern Thailand

Art Space

Featured Artist: Kamol Sarikanon

Featured: Horse Riding in the jungle of Northern Thailand

Have you ever dreamed of horseback riding? But never dared to do it? You thought it would be too difficult, too expensive and take many years of hard training? Well, you might want to think again. With a little effort you could soon find yourself riding through Northern Thailand’s jungles on the back of one of ‘mankind’s dearest friends’.

In the charming town of Phrao, just two hours north of Chiangmai, one only needs to mention the name ‘Ban Maa’ and the local people will respond with a big smile. Chances are they will immediately point you to the small ranch across the river, where horses can be seen chewing along fresh straw, just waiting for them to get saddled for the next adventurers who come here from afar to join unique horse trekking tours through the nearby jungle. Welcome to Thai Horse Farm.

Thai Horse Farm has been offering horse treks for many years, which is evident in its high level of professionalism demonstrated during all stages of the tour. There are no specific requirements to the guests, except for some healthy enthusiasm, a sense for nature, and an open mind for a great new experience. While some horseback riding skills may be helpful, it is by no means mandatory as the experienced team will take enough time to make guests acquainted with their horses. Typical trekking tours stretch over four days, with each day being packed with new impressions and memorable experiences. Constantly being in close touch with nature, guests soon learn to feel comfortable in this news environment, taking baths at untouched waterfalls, using simple tools for the preparation of delicious dishes, and sleeping in tents and bamboo huts surrounded by the sounds of wilderness.

Thai Horse Farm only accepts only small groups of 2-4 people in order to make sure that every guest gets the most out of the journey. Inquiries are welcome all year round, even though the best time for trekking tours is generally from July to February.

More information is available online at http://www.thaihorsefarm.com/, or via email at visit@thaihorsefarm.com.

Map Sabai Vol.37

In this month's edition of Map Sabai (Vol.37)

Cover Photo: Farmer completing a day of hard work

Northern Attractions

In Tribute to the North's Farmers

Art Space

Featured Artist:
Suppharat Ratcharin

Featured: In Tribute to the North's Farmers

Given the countless cultural and natural attractions Northern Thailand offers to visitors, it is easy to overlook a different aspect of this region, which may be less spectacular than all the golden temples, steep waterfalls, elephant rides and the like, but which is at least as important to the country, society, and increasingly to the whole world.

The talk is about farming and agriculture, source of a great part of Thailand’s richness. It is in fact the people who relentlessly work in the fields day-in day-out, often poor subsistence farmers, to which urban areas like Chiang Mai owe their daily supply of fruits, vegetables and - most importantly – rice. It used to be that these farmers not only had to work hard without receiving either sufficient monetary compensation, or appropriate social appreciation. Fortunately for them, though, their situation has changed to the better with the increase in global food prices, which is being felt not only in Thailand but worldwide. With prices for rice having more than doubled this year, and those of many other agricultural products following suit, leading to consumers’ panic and sometimes riots in far-away parts of the world, it is no wonder that more and more people have finally come to appreciate the real value that farmers contribute to society. It is the very purpose of this article to call this fact in mind and pay tribute to those people.

When traveling in Northern Thailand this time of the year, one has ample opportunity to get a first-hand impression of the importance of agriculture throughout the region. The seemingly endless paddy fields, deep-green fruit and vegetable plantations, and corn being grown up steep hills in between tea and coffee plantations, are best proof of this. The next time you pass by one of those stunning fields, you might want to keep in mind the hard-working people who are the driving force behind it all.

Map Sabai Vol.36

In this month's edition of Map Sabai (Vol.36)

Cover Photo: The Chinese Martyrs' Museum in Mae Salong

Northern Attractions

The Kuomintang in Doi Mae Salong

Art Space

Featured Artist:

Narongyot Tongyoo

Featured: The Kuomintang in Doi Mae Salong

If one visits the pristine town of Mae Salong high up in the mountains of Chiang Rai district, one will be immediately captured by its unique charm, due not only to its astonishing surroundings of rolling, deep-green mountains, but also due to its rich diversity of ethnic peoples. Besides Thais and a few hill tribes, this mainly includes ethnic Chinese, descendants of the Kuomintang (KMT), who have lent the town its strong Chinese character.

The history of the KMT in Mae Salong goes back to 1949 when they were forced to leave their home territory in Yunnan by the Chinese communists. Many years of struggle in northern Myanmar ensued, after which many of the KMT soldiers and their families sought refuge in Taiwan, while an equally large number fled to Northern Thailand where they were granted refugee status in 1969. The following years were marked by fighting against the Thai communists, which earned the KMT benevolence of the Thai government, and against drug lord Khun Sa and the Shan United Army (SUA) in a power struggle over control of the opium trade in the Golden Triangle. Since Khun Sa’s retreat to Myanmar in the 1980’s, and different crop substitution programs initiated by the Thai Royal family, the role of the drug trade has lost its significance in the area. Nowadays most KMT descendants earn their living from the cultivation of tea, coffee and other crops, and dominate the tourism trade in the Mae Salong, which was later renamed ‘Santikhiri’ (Hill of Peace). The past few weeks have been a special highlight in the lives of many ethnic Chinese people, as they were finally awarded Thai citizenship.

To learn more about the history of the KMT, we recommend a visit to the Chinese Martyrs’ Memorial Museum while in Mae Salong, or have a chat with former KMT soldiers, such as the owner of Little Home Guesthouse. If you want to see history alive, climb up to Mae Salong Villa, whose owner Mr. Lei Yu Tian is the last surviving KMT general, now more than 90 years old.

Dining Guide Vol.3

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204684743498269202" style="FLOAT: right; The city walls and the surrounding moat should protect the town from invaders from the north, particularly the Burmese, who considered the town a strategic post for the invasion of the Lanna Kingdom. After centuries of conflict between the Siamese and Burmese over Chiang Saen, the Burmese were finally defeated and pushed out of the territory. Chiang Saen was leveled in 1804 by King Rama I in order to remove its temptation for invaders, and it was re-occupied by descendants of the original inhabitants in 1881 by King Rama V.

Chiang Saen’s history of external influences is clearly reflected in the different architectural structures of the city’s temples which are scattered throughout town, carefully preserved or restored. Some of the most impressive temples include Wat Jedi Luang, known for its tall octagonal chedi, built in the 14th century by King Saen Phu in typical Lanna art style, and Wat Pa Sak, the teak forest temple which is situated in the middle of the historic park. For a great view over Chiang Saen and the Mekong, one should pay a visit to Wat Phra That Chom Chang, located on a hilltop north of town.

A good starting point to a visit of Chiang Saen is the National Museum which provides excellent information about the city’s past, its architectural and art styles, along with a display of many historic artefacts from the area.

Dining Guide Chiang Mai - English

All about Eating and Drinking in Chiang Mai
(please click here for Thai)

www.diningguidechiangmai.com

The latest edition
Past editions
Distribution points
Advertise with us

We have pleasure to introduce Dining Guide, Chiang Mai’s only up-to-date magazine dedicated to sharing the best culinary experiences in Thailand’s beautiful “Rose of the North”.

Dining Guide meets the demand of Chiang Mai visitors for reliable information and recommendations about where to eat and drink in town. Why not undertake a trip to Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon, located just a few hours south of Chiang Mai?

At 2565m elevation, Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain peak of Thailand, often referred to as the ‘roof of Thailand’. Surrounded by an area spanning of about 480km2, it is a designated National Park, featuring magnificent waterfalls, flora and excellent views all along the way up to the summit. Formerly called Doi Ang Ka, the mountain was renamed Doi Inthanon after the last ruler of Chiang Mai, Prince Intharawichayanon, whose main interest was to preserve the forests of the area as the watershed for the country. His remains are enshrined in the Inthanon Wichayanon stupa on the summit of Doi Inthanon, next to the giant sign “The highest point in Thailand”.

One of the most impressive elements of Doi Inthanon are undoubtedly the Nepamaytanidol Chedis situated near the summit, overseeing stunning forests and surrounded by beautiful flower gardens. The chedis were built to commemorate the 60th birthday of the present King and Queen in 1987 and 1992, respectively. The royal family has undertaken several development projects in the area, the fruits of which can be clearly seen throughout the National Park. The Royal Development Projects have laid the foundation for a new livelihood of the local hilltribe peoples by showing them ways to conduct sustainable agriculture, growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables.

NOWServing Chiang Mai Restaurant Guide

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190814089092596610" style="FLOAT: right; It includes the celebrations of the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year, set on April 15th. The term ‘Songkran’ is derived from Pali language and refers to the movement of the sun from Aries to Taurus, marking the beginning of a new astrological year.
The Thai New Year is the product of astrological and lunar features as incorporated in Buddhist philosophy, as well as features from the old Siam lunar calendar which is based on the annual farming season.
The origins of the Thai lunar calendar go back to the Tai people, who migrated to present-day Thailand from southern China long before the foundation of Thailand. Their calendar was lunar and based on the farming cycle of their area, with the first lunar month being late November-early December, and the twelfth lunar month being late October-early November. Over time, though, with the Tais’ migration, change in farming cycles and the adoption of astrological and lunar features from Buddhism, the Thai New Year came to be celebrated in April, the fifth month of the Thai lunar calendar.

Typical Songkran Rites

Songkran Parade

The Songkran parade traditionally takes place on the 13th of April, or Wan Sangkhan Lhong. It includes revered Buddha images being carried through the streets for people to sprinkle scented water on. In Chiang Mai, the Buddha statue being paraded is Phra Phuttha Singh which is housed at Wat Phra Singh.
Sand Chedis
On the second day of the Songkran Festival, Wan Nao, people in Chiang Mai traditionally go to the Ping River to collect sand which is used to construct decorated sand chedis in the temple compounds.

Cleansing of Buddha images

The third day, known as Wan Prayawan, is the first day of the new year. Families traditionally sprinkle scented water on Buddha images at home and at the temples and give food and other goods to the monks as part of their merit making.

Rod Nam Dam Hua

Rod Nam Dam Hua, practiced on the third and fourth day of the festival, Wan Bpaak Bpee, is an important ceremony for people to pay respect to their ancestors, elders and honored people. During the celebration, flower-scented water is poured over the hands of the person being paid respect who in turn express good wishes and words of blessing for the New Year. The water symbolizes cleansing, refreshment of the spirit and all good things associated with life.

Tying of Strings

The ritual of the tying of strings involves the tying of strings around the wrists of others and expressing good wishes for the New Year. While tying the strings, the person recites short prayers and blessings for the receiving person.

White Powder

The ritual of applying white powder to another person’s face is one of the oldest Songkran traditions. The white paste is a sign of protection to ward off evil and is usually applied to various parts of the face, neck and torso of others.

Map Sabai Vol. 32

In this month's feature edition of Map Sabai (Vol.32)

Cover: Elephant sculpture at the King Naresuan Shrine in Mae Suai, Chiang Rai province

Northern Attractions

Portrait: King Naresuan the Great
Wiang Haeng
Wat Fa Wiang In
Lak Taeng

Art Space

Featured Artist: Noppadon Putipin

Northern Attraction featured in Vol .32:

King Naresuan the Great

The memorial shrines in Wiang Haeng, Chiang Mai province and Mae Suai, Chiang Rai district, commemorate the bravery and achievements of King Naresuan the Great and his achievements to restore independence and dignity in the Kingdom of Ayyuthaya. Typical for the shrines at both locations are the giant elephant scultpures, symbolizing the essential role of elephants in past war times. Equally impressive and astonishing is the large number of rooster sculptures around the shrines, referring to the King’s passion for fighting cocks.

Born in 1555 to King Thammaraja, who had capitulated the Kingdom of Ayutthaya to the Burmese, then-Prince Naresuan spent most of his childhood and formative years in Burma as a royal hostage.

Having received his military education in Burma amidst his enemies, Prince Narusuan first came to fame at the young age of 16 when he managed to overthrow an uprising in a Burmese town in Shan Kingdom, thus bringing about jealousies and great rivalry from the Burmese rulers. With the trust and loyalty of his army and local towns people, he declared independence and restoration for the Kingdom of Siam in 1584 at the age of 29, moving back to Ayutthaya where his father had still been ruler.

Prince Naresuan became King in 1590 at the age of 35 upon the death of his father. Determined to drive the Burmese from the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, King Naresuan defeated them in a fierce battle at Nhong Sarai in Supanburi on January 25. It was during this battle that King Naresuan faced the Crown Prince of Burma, killing him with his fighting lance from the back of his war elephant. January 25 is ever since celebrated as Thailand’s National Armed Forces day.

In 1605 King Naresuan and his younger brother, PriàEgatosrost, aimed at Ava, which had annexed two of Ayutthaya’s Shan Protectorates. They led their troops from Ayutthaya through Chiangmai, before separating ways, with Egastosrost proceeding North to Faang and King Naresuan taking the route West toward Hang – present-day ‘Wiang Haeng’. It was in Wiang Haeng that King Naresuan fell sick and eventually died from blood-poisoning on 15 May 1605, at age 50. King Naresuan’s coffin was taken back to Ayutthya by his brother.

Photo Impressions of King Naresuan Memorial Shrines

Monstruous elephant sculpture at Memorial Shrine in Mae Suai, Chiang Rai province

King Naresuan Memorial Shrine in Wiang Haeng, Chiang Mai province

Giant rooster sculpture with Memorial Shrine in background, Wiang Haeng

Wiang Haeng

Wiang Haeng is the name of a little-known town and district in the North-Western part of Chiang Dao National Park, bordering Myanmar. The area is home to a population of several hill tribes, Tai-Yai and Haw peoples, who are mostly engaged in farming and still follow their traditional lifestyles. Situated in a wide and elevated valley in between rolling mountains, the area enjoys cool climate throughout much of the year, and is well-known for its misty morning hours lending the town its lazy and romantic touch.

The town can be reached via a winding road through forests and mountains, passing several villages and providing stunning view points on the way.

Lisu hilltribe children at Ban Nam Bor Mai near Wiang Haeng

Wat Fa Wiang In

Wat Fa Wiang In is a Shan-style temple located in Lak Taeng in Wiang Haeng district, Chiang Mai province, right on the Thai-Burmese border. It is believed to have been built by King Naresuan himself, whose statue is situated right next to the chedi. The temple was restored in the late 60s by the Shan United Revolutionary Army and later devided in two parts, with the golden pagoda on the Thai side and the red chapel on the Burmese side.

Lae Taeng

Wat Fa Wiang In is a Shan-style temple located in Lak Taeng in Wiang Haeng district, Chiang Mai province, right on the Thai-Burmese border. Most impressive, though, are the beautifully landscaped gardens and the abundance of all sorts of colorful flowers leading the way throughout the entire site, peaking in the Rose Garden (Suan Suwaree). Elevated on a plateau overlooking the lush green Fern Garden is the water reservoir, where the sight of fountains and lavish flower decorations combines with the sound of subtle music to create a unique atmosphere of joy, peace and romance.
Phuphing Palace is the most beautiful during the cold season (December through Feburary) when flowers are in full blossom. As such, it may be the ideal destination on Valentines day. The gates are open to visitors everyday from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Arunothai

Located on the Thai-Burmese border about 45km north of Chiang Dao on the foot of the mountains leading up to Doi Ankhang, Arunothai boasts a unique atmosphere due to its diverse population of Chinese, Thai and Burmese origin. The first settlers being personnel of the former Kuomintang Party in mainland China, the town bears a strong Chinese character, as reflected in people’s lifestyles and language. Arunothai has in the past earned a bad reputation as a notorious drug-trafficking center. Since the implementation of harsh rules by the Thai army, though, the narcotics trade has decreased remarkably and the town has turned into a peaceful community where people earn their living from the trade of goods and agricultural products. Arunothai is well worth as visit, to shop for Chinese goods such as desserts and tea, or to take a relaxing walk around the beautiful lake in the center of town.

Muang Na Nua Caves

Just about 20km outside of Arunothai on the way to Muang Nga, off the main road at Muang Na, is the Muang Na Nua cave system, made up of the Chaeng-Pa Hok, Lom, Ngam and Nam caves. All being different in structure and challenging to walk through, these limestone caves may be a great opportunity for cave enthusiasts to explore in tranquility without being surrounded by dozens of other visitors.

Sri Sungwan Waterfall

Located about 15km south of Arunothai, Sri Sung Wan waterfall is part of the vast Chiang Dao National Park, named after H.R.H. The Princess Mother who once had lunch here in 1967.
Unlike most steep waterfalls found elsewhere in the North, Sri Wang Wan runs smoothly over multiple levels of limestone rocks, providing a calming view and a nice place to relax. Further into the park are a lovely herb and flower garden, as well as a nature trail for a challenging 2-hour walk through the surrounding forest. Those who want to stay overnight can set up their tents on the campground just a few steps from the waterfall.

Pong Ung Hot Spring

Nearby Sri Sungwan Waterfall off the main road at ….. is Pong Ung Hotspring, a rather small and quiet hot spring ideal for a few hours of relaxation. This natural hot spring has 2 ponds with the water temperature reaching 58-64 degrees Celsius. Visitors can have mineral and stream baths outside, with shower and hygienic facilities being just a step away. The artist wants the temple to become a place of worship for everyone, and create a national and world heritage that represents art and craft that flourished during the reign of His Majesty the King.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Established in 1383 on the order of King Ku Na, this magnificent temple has become the symbol of Chiang Mai and overlooks the city from its 1,073m elevation on Doi Suthep. It is famous for its large gold-plated chedi.

According to the legend, the temple site was selected by sending a white elephant carrying a Buddha relic to roam at will up the mountainside. When it reached the spot, it trumpeted, circled three times, and knelt down - which was interpreted as a sign indicating an auspicious site where the chedi was to be built.

In the old days, it took several hours to reach the temple by foot and there was a well known saying that reaching the pagoda was limited to those strongly devoted. This was until the year 1934, when Kruba Srivichai, the most revered monk of Lanna Thai, came to Chiang Mai to initiate the road construction project up to Wat Doi Suthep. The ground breaking ceremony was performed by Chow Keo Navarat, then ruler of Chiang Mai. The ceremony took place at the front of the modern Chiang Mai Zoo in November 1934.

Doi Tung

Apart from beautfiful scenery all along the way, the area of Doi Tung in Mae Fah Luang district offers a number of interesting sites including the Doi Tung Palace (royal villa), Mae Fa Luang Garden and Phra That Doi Tung. The royal villa served as a royal winter retreat for the Princess Mother, and as the center of her initiatives to eradicate rural poverty and opium cultivation through sustainable development projects.
Wat Phra That Doi Tung is situated on top of Doi Tung Mountain, the highest mountain in Chiang Rai Province with an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters. Constructed in the 10th centure, the temple complex is comprised of twin Lanna style chedis, one of which is said to contain the left collarbone of the Lord Buddha.

Lot (Coffin) Cave

One of the largest limestone caves of Thailand, Lot (“Coffin”)cave features impressive stalagmites and a wide stream running through it to the other side of the mountain. It is called after the large number of coffins found inside, carved from solid teak wood, and assumed to be up to 2,000 years old.

Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle at Sop Ruak is considered to be the ‘center’ of an area where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar adjoin and the Mekong River meets the Ruak River. The famous House of Opium and Hall of Opium remind of the fact that the wider Golden Triangle which covers an area of more than 300,000 square kilometers, has been one of the most extensive opium-producing places of the world.

Phu Chi Fah

Located in the midst of Doi Pa Mohn Mountain range along the Thai-Laos border in an elevation of about 1,700 meters above sea level, Phu Chi Fa enjoys cool climate that brings about colorful vegetation all year round. It is best known for its beautiful scenery and spectacular views of Laos from the sheer cliff, especially in the sea of mist at sunrise.
