We’ve built a new shop which includes our Metal Shop in which we fabricate all kinds of custom metal flashings and cladding products from basic to specialty pieces that can make almost any exterior component of your home or business maintenance free.
Lansard Bros. Roofing has been committed to doing everything we can to be environmentally conscious and to be pro-active when it comes to creating a better environment for us all. For years now, we’ve been dumping our shingle debris at Greensite! Greensite is a shingle disposal company which recycles discarded asphalt shingles for use in things such as road pavement. While selecting a location on which to build our new offices, it was important to us to keep our environmental efforts in mind. So, we built our new office just around the corner from Greensite. That means that LBR’s environmental footprint will grow even smaller due to the large decrease in fuel emissions in order to dump the recyclable shingles. Every little bit helps!

Till next time, please stop by for a visit. And remember, “We look forward to serving you!”

Remember that in order to qualify your invoice must be paid in full prior to the draw date.
Again, we want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and for taking the time to fill out our online customer survey. We appreciate your feedback; it is a very important to us and the continued attention to customer relations we are proud of.

What The Hail?

Well, what about hail? It seems that almost every summer Manitoba gets hit with sizeable hail in one part of the province or another. Winnipeg included seems to get it almost every year. Unlike your vehicle, if you're lucky enough to be able to park your car in your garage prior to it getting pelted by hail, your roof is not a lucky. Hail storms will range in intensity and size of hail, from pea size to quarter size or golf ball size (those ones do damage!). Although not all hail will damage your roof, it's a good idea to take a look at your shingles and eavestrough after a hail storm to ensure that your shingles have not been damaged to the point that they will pre-maturely age.
A hail storm is normally coming from one direction as it swoops by so, some roofs will only show signs of hail damage on certain slopes which are impacted more directly by the hail, whereas lower pitched roofs will at times show damage to all slopes. Depending on the age of the shingle or more specifically how brittle it has become due to aging, the more damaged it may become. We have found over the years that a newer roof will withstand the beating from a smaller sized hail stone, whereas older roofs will suffer damages. Remember that just because your roof did get hit by hail doesn't mean that the shingles are damaged. I say this because one of the biggest misunderstandings we deal with after a hail storm is when one neighbor is getting their roof replaced through insurance and the other neighbor right next door isn't! The situation is likely that the shingles on the one house did not withstand the hail storm and the other one did. Although we are fortunate enough to be able to buy insurance on our roofs against hail damage it is quite a chore when it is not planned not to mention those darn deductibles which still need to get paid.
Shingle manufacturers have developed hail resistant shingles which are a little more expensive but certainly worth it in an area periodically hit by hail. For more information about these products, simply contact one of our experienced representatives and they'll be glad to go over these products with you.
Another item that tends to get damaged by hail is aluminum eavestroughs and downpipes. When we perform hail inspections we take a good look at the eavestrough as well as any metal cladding such as fascia or window cladding, this is all covered by insurance in most cases. As part of our service with respect to hail inspection we do a thorough inspection of all slopes, take photos of all damages and provide an inspection report complete with a cost of replacement. We have been dealing with most insurance companies over many years and have developed good relationships with them based on integrity and honesty.
Our recommendation at Lansard Bros Roofing is that if you suspect that your shingles may be damaged by hail, contact us through our website at lansard.ca, fill out our request a quote form and let us take care of things for you. I hope this Blog has answered some questions you many have had about hail damage, if you have any other questions, we'd love to talk with you, just call us at 204-233-4664 and we'll be glad to help.

Till next time! Take care and stay out of Hail!

The Importance of a Properly Vented Roof

There are many things to consider when replacing your roof. Some are simple such as what style or color and others are more complex such as, what type of roofing system should be installed on my roof? Or, what are the requirements in order to qualify for the manufacturer’s warranty? Today I’d like to talk about the importance of a properly ventilated attic space.
There are a few important reasons to properly ventilate your attic space and here are just a couple.
1. Heat in the attic during the summer
One of the main reasons for proper attic ventilation as part of your roofing system is to keep air flowing under the roof deck in the attic space to cool the attic and remove warm air from it. This helps to prevent shingles from baking on the roof deck and pre-maturely aging them. Most shingle manufacturers will not warranty the shingles unless the attic is properly vented with some form of attic vents which I’ll discuss later.
2. Condensation in the attic space during the winter
Have you ever looked inside your attic space in the winter and seen a beautiful layer of crystal white frost on the underside of your roof deck? It looks really neat and sparkly. Although it may look cool (no pun intended) it’s a sure sign of an improperly vented attic space. What’s happening is that some heat from the home will make its way into the attic space, sometimes even with proper insulation and vapor barrier. This warm moist air is condensing on the cold underside of the roof deck. The frost will continue to grow until it either melts or is able to evaporate and ventilate out of the attic space with air flow. This is one of the best ways to make it rain in your house either in January when you crank up the heat or on a nice warm spring day when the sun warms the roof deck and your lights and door headers start to drip. Talk about being confused! It’s raining in the house but not outside? Trust me, those have been some of the most interesting telephone conversations I’ve had with soon to be customers.
All kidding aside, the basic idea is that in order to properly ventilate an attic space there needs to be proper air intake as well as proper air outflow or exhaust. A 50/50 balance between intake and exhaust is ideal. There are several types of each of these ventilators but let’s keep it simple. A typical home will have an overhang or soffit which is usually where the intake vents are located. Either air intake grills at approximately every 8’ to 10’ or it will have continuous vented soffit panels. The most common exhaust vents we see in Manitoba are static exhaust vents. Roof vents near the peak of the roof. Studies show that the best ventilation for a roof is called ridge venting. Essentially this is a strip vent fastened at the peak of the slopes with a properly sized strip cut out of the roof decking to allow proper air flow. One of the most common types used today is shingle over ridge venting. They work well and look great. Click on this link to view a great video on Lomanco’s LOR 30. We like it because of its superior baffle system which prevents snow from blowing in during a storm and does a great job of venting.
If you’re having problems with attic venting or need your roof replaced, call us at 233-4664. We’d be happy to ensure your roof is properly vented. Until next time, remember, “We look forward to serving you!”

Take care,
Lansard Bros Roofing

We were also happy to have the opportunity to get to know you a little. Our goal at LBR is to serve you to the best of our ability, we are glad to hear from so many of you on how simple it is to get a quote by filling out the “Request a quote” form on our website! This months’ Blog focuses on filling you in on how you can WIN a trip to Mexico on us! We are excited to be able to offer this prize as a way of saying thank you for your support! We value all of you, our customers and your feedback on your experience in having us take care of your exterior renovations.
For several years now, we have been sending out a survey form to all of our customers once their work was completed. The survey is important to us in order to fine tune the service we provide and therefore we encourage all of our customers to fill in our survey! We read each and every survey and with your permission, many of them end up on our testimonial page! As an act of gratitude we used to send out a coffee gift card to every customer that filled out our survey. This year we thought that it would be great to offer a trip to Mexico to a lucky LBR customer!
We’re doing it! And we couldn’t be more excited about contest! Here it is in a nut shell, you have us do your work either roofing, siding, soffit and fascia or any other job worth more than $500.00.
