Saturday, May 25: S.T.E.M. Club: Swing Low-The Great Pendulum Investigation!

Become a true scientist and investigate the secrets of pendulums!

This free event is for children in grades 1-5.

Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to participate in the May "On the Edge" Book Discussion for "Leverage" by Joshua Cohen on Wednesday, May 22 at 4 p.m.

High school sophomore Danny excels at gymnastics but is bullied, like the rest of the gymnasts, by members of the football team, until an emotionally and physically scarred new student joins the football team and forms an unlikely friendship with Danny.

Teens in grades 6-12 can sing, recite poetry, tell jokes, rap or even dance at the library on Thursday, May 23 at 5 p.m.

Come a bit early and sign up for your slot at the door. All acts must be deemed appropriate by the library's conduct policy, including, but not limited to, obscene language.

Even if you don't have a talent you wish to share, you can always be a part of a supportive audience!

Thursday, May 16: Teen Movie Night: The Green Hornet

Teens in grade 6 and up are invited to watch "The Green Hornet" starring Seth Rogen at the library during Teen Movie Night on Thursday, May 16 starting at 4 p.m.

Britt Reid is a rich playboy with a direction-less life. After his father dies, Britt inherits his vast media empire where he meets employee, Kato. The two realize thathave a chance to do something worthwhile with their lives by fighting crime, so Britt becomes The Green Hornet.

With the help of Britt's secretary, the two begin hunting down Benjamin Chudnofsky, the man who controls L.A.'s gritty underworld. But Chudnofsky has plans of his own: to swat down The Green Hornet once and for all.

Eight Grade Bites
by Heather Brewer

Eighth Grade Bites is part of The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod. Vladimir is a teen vampire who is dealing with a number of supernatural, and everyday teenage, problems. He was born to a vampire father, and human mother who disappeared under peculiar circumstances. With his partner in crime, Henry, and his Aunt Nelly, Vlad tries to steer through both the treacherous world's of vampires and high school.

After reading the book I can honestly say that it would be a great read for its intended audience. It is a fast read and not only because of its 180 pages, but also because of the humor interwoven through the book. The only downside that readers will find is that the action in the book does not pick up until the middle of the book. The first half of the book is an introduction to Vlad, and a few of the characters in his world.

The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod is a more masculine response to the recent supernatural novels that have been released.The market has been washed with several supernatural novels geared towards girls. While that is all fine and good this book is geared towards boys who are also interested in vampires. Eighth Grade Bites is the first book in the series and a great place to start for boys who are in Grades 5-8.

April Book of the Month: "After Happily Ever After: Cinderella and the Mean Queen" by Tony Bradman

Even princesses have problems.

After all the glitz and glamour involved with getting married to the prince, newlywed Cinderella is settling into her new life and finding being in the castle all day is not as fun as it's cracked up to be.

Her husband's parents (and housemates) are unkind to her, especially her mother-in-law as she finds Cinderella lacks any real substance.

Cinderella sets out to prove her wrong and joins the workforce, with terrible results.

Can Cinderella prove her worth? Will her mother-in-law ever be her friend?

"Mean Queen" is a fast-paced read not only those who enjoy princess stories, but for those left wondering what happened to their favorite fairy tale characters after the original story ends. It is also a great bridge between picture books and chapter books as adorable illustrations are on every page.

Arisa 1 by Natsumi Ando

Tsubasa and Arisa are twin sisters separated by their parents divorce. They continue to stay close by exchanging letters with each other. After three years they are finally reunited.
      Arisa gets good grades, she is the class president, has tons of friends, a great boyfriend, and everyone adores her.
Tsubasa on the other hand gets bad grades, has a bad temper, no girlfriends and goes by the nickname of the Demon Princess.
     Arisa has a seemingly awesome life.   Tsubasa changes places with her one day and goes to school in her place. She finds a letter in Arisa's locker. The message in the letter causes Arisa to try and commit suicide by jumping out of a window. She was lucky that the trees below broke her fall.
     Arisa is now in a comma. Tsubasa pretending to be Arisa is now on a quest to find out what is going on at Himetsubaki Junior High. There are secrets at the school and Tsubasa plans on finding out just what they are!
     Arisa is a manga graphic novel and the first volume of a new series written by Natsumi Ando.
     I have to admit that this was the first manga graphic novel that I have ever read. I really enjoyed the story and I even have gone on reading most of the volumes in the series. Check it out. I know you will enjoy it completely!

The last lecture in the Worldview Forum, #12 will be presented April 30th, 6:30-8:00pm. The topic will be: Comparing & Contrasting Worldviews, Christianity and Atheism. Join us for this last lecture/discussion presented by Roberto. W. Rossi and various experts on this topic of discussion.

Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to participate in the April "Blast from the Past" Teen Book Discussion on Wednesday, April 24 at 4 p.m. This month's book is Margarita Engle's "Hurricane Dancers."

Quebrado has been a slave on Captain Bernadino de Talavera's pirate ship for years, but when a hurricane sinks the ship and kills most of the crew, Quebrado escapes to safety and find acceptance and refuge in a nearby village.

The Greenstalk family is ready to spend the day at the county fair. However, things aren't running as smoothly as they all wish. Good thing the cows are here! Cows to the rescue! No matter what the situation, the cows are ready to help solve the problem. Broken car? Cows to the rescue! No one to pose with Mrs. Greenstalk for pictures? Cows to the rescue!

Cows to the Rescue is a quick and funny story about solving problems. The Greenstalks don't have to worry because the cows are ready with solutions. Himmelman uses the repetitive phrase. "Cows to the rescue" after every problematic situation making this a very fun read-aloud choice.
