Companies and brands just love getting a bit of advertisement on the big, small, or pixelated screen. From E.T. gobbling down Reese’s Pieces, to all of Michael Bay’s transforming Autobots becoming GM automobiles (with the bad guy Decepticons being portrayed by Fords. Boo! Hiss!). But sometimes filmmakers don’t want their magnum opus turning into a two-hour commercial for McDonalds, so they just come up with brands and products that don’t actually exist in the real world. Here are 10 of the best of these fictional brands — and why we love them.

1. Morley Cigarettes

When you want a character to use a familiar product, but you also want that character to be an amoral, murdering sociopath, then what do you do? Well, in the case of The X-File’s “Cigarette Smoking Man,” you use a brand that is obviously an expy for something else.

Morley Cigarettes mimic the package design of real-world Marlboro Cigarettes, right down to the font of the lettering. And while Mulder’s nemesis might have made Morley a household name (of sorts), the fake cancer sticks have been around quite a bit longer, first appearing as chocolate cigarettes in the Dick Van Dyke Show, and later showing up being smoked by the incomparable William Shatner in the famous “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” episode of the Twilight Zone. They have since appeared in over 60 movies, TV shows, and video games. Taking that into account, it’s probably safe to say that Morley’s cigarettes have killed more fictional characters than Stephen King.

2. Duff Beer

Duff Beer is the prefered beverage of America’s best loved overweight alcoholic, Homer Simpson. As with every aspect of of a television show that’s been running for over two decades, Duff has gained a significant amount of backstory and screen time. With it’s own amusement park (Duff Garden’s), mascots (the Seven Duffs, Duffman) and even an evil counterpart (Fudd Beer, which is often drunk in neighboring Shelbyville), Duff has become one of the most recognizable fake brands in the world. Well, sort of. Despite Simpons creator Matt Groening refusing to license the beer due to concerns of child-targeted marketing, many companies have attempted to make their own real-life versions of Duff beer. Because, you know, a mentally challenged fat guy with jaundice-yellow skin who works a dead end job is the perfect celebrity endorser.

3. Dunder-Mifflin

Just how important is paper in an increasingly digital world? If you’re one of the employees at the constantly-in-danger-of-going-out-of-business Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, Inc., then the answer is a resounding “meh.” With petty squabbles, office rivalries, childish pranks and the occasional management disaster, paper seems to be the last thing on the minds of the characters of NBC’s The Office. Of course, that hasn’t stopped the Dunder-Mifflin brand from breaking out of the confines of fiction and entering the real world; the office supply store Staples has even started to sell Dunder-Mifflin paper, which is strange, considering that on the show, Staples is one Dunder-Mifflin’s biggest competitors. Hmmm. Hopefully none of that paper carries any of the obscene watermarks from season 3.

4. Wonka

With confectionery curiosities such as an everlasting jawbreaker and gum that contains the flavor of a three-course meal, it’s no wonder that the Wonka brand is the world’s leading candy maker in Roald Dahl’s novel, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” In fact, it’s popularity is great enough that it causes a worldwide craze when it begins it’s golden ticket promotion. In real life, the Willy Wonka Candy Company is owned by Nestle and produces fun, but not quite magical treats such as Nerd, Runts and Pixy Stix … alright, Pixy Stix are still pretty magical, I guess.

5. Nuka-Cola

In the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the Fallout video game franchise, there’s only one thing better than a cup of irradiated water: an ice-cold bottle of equally irradiated soda! Nuka-Cola acts as an in-game stand-in for Coca-Cola, but with a few differences. For one thing, it’s unique flavor is said to be derived from a combination of 17 different fruits. There are several different variants to the basic recipe available, but the most interesting is probably Nuka-Cola Quantum. With twice the calories, twice the caffeine and twice the taste, it’s a huge hit.

One in-game character describes the taste as being something like “downing a fistful of sugar and punching yourself in the face.” To make it stand out better on store shelves, it’s manufacturers added an extra fruit flavor and also included a mildly radioactive isotope in the recipe, which makes it glow with an eerie blue light. And for those who consume it, there is one other added benefit: it make’s a person’s urine glow a bright, electric blue.

6. Bluth Company

The Bluth Company was started by business mogul George Bluth Sr. on the short lived (but soon to be rejuvenated!) sleeper hit Arrested Development. In addition to building low-quality mini-mansions, selling frozen bananas and acting as the personal piggy bank for the mostly amoral family, the Bluth Company was also suspected of violating trade embargos and building homes in Iraq for Saddam Hussein. And although the business falls on hard times throughout the show’s run, it does begin to regain some of its lost glory when George Bluth Sr. is acquitted of all charges and released from prison … only to have his wife Lucile arrested in his place. Well, there’s always money in the Banana Stand.

7. Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes

First off, if you don’t know what this is, then just skip ahead to the next point. We hold no malice towards you, and we’re actually kind of glad that there are still people in the world who don’t know a whole lot about Harry Potter, but the fact is that with seven book’s worth of backstory, the explanation here just isn’t going to do justice. Suffice it to say that Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes is a company that makes practical joke kits and magic sets in a world where real magic exists. As such, they’re able to sell things such as extendable ears (for eavesdropping), headless hats (for making a wearer’s head invisible), and spell-checking ink quills. Of course, once you get past the wonder and magic of this quaint little shop, you realize how irresponsible it would be to sell things like portable swamps and living carnivorous Frisbees to children, but I guess that’s the Weasley twins for you.

8. Pizza Planet

A sci-fi themed pizza joint in the Pixar universe, Pizza Planet is best known for its spaceship-sporting delivery trucks and its little green alien claw machine prizes. Although it might not be the most interesting brand on this list, it does get points for consistency — a Pizza Planet reference can be seen in every Pixar film ever made, with the exception of The Incredibles. Of course, Incredibles was the best one, so maybe they should start to phase poor Pizza Planet out.

9. Acme

If you want something, and you want it fast, then Acme is the company for you. Perhaps best known for it’s constant appearance (and dangerously defective products) in the classic Looney Tunes animated cartoons, the name Acme has become synonymous for “fake-brand.” And with an average delivery time of approximately two seconds, if Acme were to actually exist in our universe, it would wipe Amazon from the face of the Earth. Well, until some kid immolated himself with faulty Acme brand rocket skates, that is.

10. Wayne Enterprises

Although not nearly as widely recognized as Acme, Wayne Enterprises (with it’s CEO Bruce Wayne, AKA Batman) is immeasurably cooler. Dabbling in everything from real estate, to military hardware, to robotics technology, Wayne Enterprises is the cash-cow that provides Batman with the milk he needs to doll out creamy justice. And when one can embezzle enough money out of a company to build an orbiting space station without anyone even noticing, then you know the company must be doing well.

You see them everyday on your drive to work. They’re something that every major city, community and highway has in common. Billboards. Some billboards are annoying, some are useful, but for the most part, they’re pretty forgettable, right? Not these. After much consideration and deliberation, we present the top 10 funniest company billboards (in no particular order).

10. Audi vs. BMW Billboard War

OK, admit it. This billboard battle between Audi and BMW is hilarious. It’s a bold marketing move by Audi to call out a competitor like they did with this billboard. BMW definitely got the better end of this one. Awesome move by BMW to put their response right next to Audi’s sign. Checkmate.

9. The Bic Razor

If this isn’t one of the most creative billboards you’ve ever seen, we don’t know what is. Part of what we like the most about this ad is that there are no words, other than the Bic logo in the bottom corner. Bic is letting their huge, grass shaving razor speak for itself. Fantastic idea.

8. Hot Wheels

If you told us that you never played with Hot Wheels as a kid, we’d either think you were lying or that you just had a crummy childhood. This monstrous Hot Wheels loop-the-loop brought out the inner kid in all of us. It’s OK to admit that you smiled and even chuckled a bit when you saw this picture. We did, too.

7. Ikea’s Stool Samples

OK, Ikea really brought their “A”-game with this ad. The Swedish furniture manufacturer shows off their fine array of stools with a bit of comedic flair. Having been to Ikea, we can attest to the fact that their stool samples are great. Oh, and they have nice furniture too.

6. Panasonic Nose Hair Trimmer

This series of Panasonic nose hair trimmer billboards is not only amazingly comedic, it’s also unbelievably gross. One of the craziest things about these billboards is that the marketing strategy works! You’re now self conscious about your nose hair, aren’t you? That’s what we thought.

5. Subway

Well, the old adage is “sex sells.” Subway decided to put that theory to the test with this billboard. Not only will it get everyone’s attention, but it’s bound to give you a good laugh too. This was a bold marketing move by Subway, but it is definitely one of the funnier billboards you’ve ever seen.

4. Oldtimer Restaurant

Put this billboard off the side of the freeway on a normal-sized advertisement and it wouldn’t be funny, right? However, with the genius placement of the woman’s mouth being the tunnel, this advertisement gains an amazing amount of comedic value. Well played, Oldtimer. Well-played.

3. Ford Mustang

This billboard looks so realistic that if you don’t see the Mustang logo in the bottom corner, you’ll think your vision is going bad. Once you do see the Mustang logo, however, you realize just how incredibly creative this billboard is. Whoever came up with this one deserves a raise.

2. Pond’s clean pores

That’s right, you’re seeing a guy who is scrubbing out the inside of that billboard’s huge pore. Think about that. This billboard is incredibly unique and it shows what the product is going to do. Excellent idea that turned into an awesome advertisement.

1. Tylenol

“Get back to normal” was Tylenol’s theme for this gigantic billboard. Just looking at this will make you laugh, then you’ll get a headache right after. Those who get constant headaches and migraines can sympathize with this guy. We feel your pain, my friend. We feel your pain.

Some of the most influential aspects of a brand reside in the people behind it. So much so, that the traditional 4 P’s of Marketing model (universally accepted areas of Marketing) has been adapted in recent years to include an all-important 5th P:

Products

Pricing

Placement

Promotion

PEOPLE or Personnel

The concept behind this “P” is quite simple: if each team member exemplifies the ideals of the brand, then the strength of the brand message is magnified to the audience, thus giving way for increased brand loyalty.

Consider some examples …

If a company identifies “Excellent Customer Service” as one of its ideals, it is important that everyone (the salesperson, receptionist, janitor, or otherwise) catch the vision of that ideal. Without the collective buy in, the customer’s experience can be held hostage by inconsistency or mismanaged expectations. In such cases, the least-positive impression of their whole experience usually ends up shaping their buying decisions going forward.

It is also important to note that opportunities can be conceived or squelched long before the transaction, based on the attitude or presentation of that brand’s “PEOPLE”, both in settings inside and outside of work. That’s not always fair, but remember … a brand’s value is completely derived from perception. Let’s say you happened to meet someone that came across as negative, unhappy, and disinterested towards others. During the course of your interaction, you learn that they work as the secretary for a local Day Spa. Now, fast forward a couple months and imagine that you are wanting to pamper yourself or a significant other. What are the chances that that person will come to mind when faced with the choice of where to enjoy your 2-hour getaway? Will that thought influence you at all?

While being sweet-tempered may seem out of the ordinary for a child his age, his extraordinary personality is not the only thing that separates Greyson from the rest. He was born with a rare disease called Actin 1 Mutation.

Actin 1 Mutation is a rare disease that has been diagnosed specifically for Greyson’s condition. Its symptoms are similar to Nemaline Myopathy, in that it causes breathing difficulties, respiratory weakness, low muscle tone, floppy limbs, and intestinal difficulties. Usually, in the blood stream there are proteins that make the muscles contract and these contractions allow body movement. In Greyson, these proteins have mutated so that it does not allow normal muscle contraction and growth. To children with this condition, contracting any respiratory illness, no matter how common, can be fatal because of underdeveloped respiratory muscles.Greyson continually undergoes daily preventative treatments in order to fight for his life, including a “cough assists” routine where 5 times a day he is required to use a machine to help him cough (each session lasting about an hour) to help prevent the contraction of various illnesses. Greyson is showing great progress in developing his fine motor skills.

The whole process is an ongoing battle, but Greyson has developed a resilience and witty personality to cope with his difficulties. His father, Joe Brown, currently works in the Graphics Department at Namify. Namify founder, Bryan Welton Jr, started the Racin’ For Greyson tradition as a way to rally the community to bless a very special boy, celebrate his will to live, and defray the piling medical costs in hopes of countering this singularly rare condition.

The race will be held Saturday, April 13th, 2013. The 5k walk/run will begin at 9:00am. There will also be other festivities going on at the same time until 12:00PM. So come, bring family and friends, have a good time, and help raise awareness of Actin 1 Mutation for Greyson. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to a fund for Greyson Brown.

LESSON 1: Test and re-test your concept thoroughly before going to market. At a pre-release screening of Windows 98 for an audience of press members, stunned onlookers chortled as this Blue Screen appeared and Microsoft employees blushed as their new program crashed before their eyes.

LESSON 2: There is such a thing as too creepy. We all know Burger King, and most Americans have likely indulged in their delicious fast food treats — that is, when there’s no McDonald’s in sight. It’s no small wonder that McDonald’s has been so successful when its spokesman is a rather creepy, white-faced clown.Burger King gets no such slack for a creepy mascot. A number of years ago they introduced the Burger King King, a mute and giant-faced medieval King who scared most people right off their whoppers. It wasn’t until 2011 that BK execs saw a correlation between dropping sales and the King’s off-putting silence. Meanwhile, Ronald McDonald continues to smirk.

LESSON 3: Explore possible translation or cultural issues as part of your due diligence. A number of major marketing blunders come from simple errors in translation. While it’s amazing to consider that ad campaigns, those silly little business ventures that cost millions and millions of dollars, could actually overlook something as central as, you know, the meaning of the words they print in their ads.But it happens all the time. The Coors “Turn it loose” slogan translated into a Spanish idiom for diarrhea. Perdue Chicken’s slogan “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken” was translated in Spanish to “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate,” and Mexican consumers read the translated “Got Milk?” as “Are you lactating?

It was a wonderful year-end celebration that featured delicious Brazilian eats, fun prizes, dancing VP’s, and a concert-ish atmosphere for entertainer Jason Hewlett.
It was fun to see one of our guests, Bill Freeze (VP of Utah County Realtors Association), post the following comment on his facebook wall after the party, “This was a young audience of people that love where they are working….they like each other….they like their bosses and they like to have fun!”
Thank you to all those who helped pull off this year’s event, especially to our Executive Team for staying with this fun holiday tradition.

Congratulations to Scott Bishop on being named the 2012 Employee of the Year. Scott has been with Namify in our Shipping Department since August 2009. His responsibilities include Shipping, Receiving, Inventory Management, Quality Control, and Custom Assembly. This year alone, Scott helped reduced Namify’s shipping costs by 40%, among other achievements. What Scott loves most about Namify is “the environment and how we are different from other companies.”

What do his peers think?
“Scott has been a motivated and fantastic employee. He is persistent in working towards his goals. He has been proactive in communicating with his supervisors and conscientious in making sure his decision are aligned with the company vision. When he makes mistakes he seeks to correct them by searching tenaciously for the root of the problem and following up on it until it is completely resolved. He is a great asset to the company and works to accomplish the goals that will improve his department and Namify as a whole in the both the short term and long run.” -Tyler Kimball

“Dennis Scott Bishop is an amazing man and an even better manager. We are great friends, but when it comes down to it, he can switch into boss mode in a heartbeat. He knows exactly what needs to be done, and he does it quickly and efficiently.” -Preston Cutler
