In 1995 Alicia Kirby’s future held visions of three-piece suits, 9-5 days, and an office with her name on the door. An up-and-comer in the mortgage department, Alicia was set to take the banking world by storm. Then a potential relocation from her hometown in Wilmington, NC made her re-think her career path.

Her father, also a stylist who made a similar career change, influenced her to pursue her interest in doing hair. After establishing herself as a stylist and building up a loyal clientele, she continued to pursue advanced education. Enter L’ANZA Educator Troy Dupler. One L’ANZA workshop with him, and Alicia was smitten with healing. Two years later, she decided to become an educator.

In her two years, Alicia has received nothing but raves. L’ANZA Business Development Manager Andey Messin calls Alicia “energetic, optimistic, and edutainment at its finest!” Creative Director Wendy Bond says “Alicia is exactly the kind of person you want on your team. She is observant, always supportive, and a great artist!”

L’ANZA LifeStyle caught up with Alicia to talk about her exciting journey to becoming one of L’ANZA’s most revered new educators.

What made you want to educate for L’ANZA? L’ANZA has given me so much success financially and I wanted to show the world the benefits of such a fantastic line.

What is your absolute favorite L’ANZA? L’ANZA Healing Color – hands-down! True to its tag lines, Healing Color doesn’t just make the hair look like it’s healthy, they make it healthy – it’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen. I love the vibrancy and that I don’t have to second guess myself and its added benefits!

What products do you most frequently recommend to your clients? Trauma Treatment for supreme conditioning and color longevity! And for styling, Polyester works fabulously on EVERY hair type.

What hair tools can you perform MacGyver-esque miracles with? A blow dryer and a Denman brush. Hot air and a tool to manipulate it correctly can give you a beautiful finished product in a pinch.

Do you have a favorite look? A favorite Hair-era? So many looks – so many different people. Flowing, coppery Botticelli curls and platinum pixie cuts don’t look good on everyone. So truly, my favorite look is what makes my client look best. Sleek, outrageous or classic, I want to create looks best for them!

Who is your favorite client? The one who trusts me. Not necessarily the one that lets me do whatever I want, but the one who sits in my chair and believes that I care.

What inspires you? There are so many avenues that truly inspire me. When I’m assisting at a show, out in the field detailing – I meet so many exceptional stylists and individuals – they are my inspiration!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “Do what you love, and love what you do.” My Dad always believed that if you love something enough, you can make a living at it – and we’re both proof of that! Also, be humble. The people that come to you – I thank and appreciate every single one of them. They can always go someplace else, and without them, where would you be?

So what’s next for the great Alicia Kirby? I want to do it all! My goal is to become the best I can be in every capacity of this industry. I love working with L’ANZA and would eventually like to be the go-to person for anything and everything!

Dreams are succession of thoughts, images, and sounds that skip playfully through our subconscious minds and speak to our emotions. L’ANZA Healing Haircare captures the essence of our dreams in this collection of light airy styles. The looks include:

Zoey – Sensual layers create an airy elegance with a cascade of intricate highlights that shift from sultry to seductive. The cut adds an interesting twist, maintaining length, adding seamless internal layers and creating body to long hair. Haircolor features Walnut and California Sand from L’ANZA Color Concepts.

Lucia – Effervescent. Playful. Undeniably radiant. This medium length style brushes the shoulders with a taste of texture and a diffusion of blonde color throughout. This layered cut provides ultimate versatility in styling. It can be worn easily in a casual shag, enhanced with playful texture or slicked into a high-style coif. Haircolor features Mother of Pearl from L’ANZA Color Concepts.

Mia – Hypnotic, electric and fresh. A daringly textured cut is softened by a deliciously light blonde that speaks chic. The premise of the haircut is a soft, short, choppy shape. The round shape uses extreme carving to create a texture that is not only visual, but one that you can feel with your hands. Haircolor features White Sand from L’ANZA Color Concepts.

This week, L’ANZA LifeStyle addresses the burning question: Can you use heat to process L’ANZA Healing Color?

Because L’ANZA utilizes exclusive Color Attachment Technology, it does not require heat at anytime during the process. Therefore, L’ANZA DOES NOT recommend the use of heat during Healing Color processing!

So why do colorists like to turn up the degree?

Doesn’t heat shorten the processing time?

Using heat to shorten the processing time will actually sacrifice the development of the color molecule, which may result in uneven results or dull, lackluster haircolor. It may also cause haircolor to fade more quickly, or off-tone. L’ANZA’s processing times fall in line with most standard professional color brands, so there’s no need to rush! You may get your client in and out of your chair faster, but they may not be leaving with the gorgeous color you promised.

Doesn’t resistant gray hair respond best to heat processing?

L’ANZA Healing Color provides even gray coverage and fabulous shine - no heat required! Before hitting the dryer, try adjusting your formulation first, using the suggestions below.

1) Make it a double (NN). The Ultra Natural Series (NN) was specifically developed with gray coverage in mind. Use this series to get your client to their desired target color easily, with maximum longevity.

The Gray Forumlation Chart (pictured above) is an extremely helpful tool to optimally formulate using the NN series. It can be found in your Healing Colorist’s Technical Guide or Wall Chart.

2) Adjust the volume. It can be as simple as changing the volume of your Cream Developer. Instead of 20 Volume, try 30 Volume instead. With our six dedicated developers and versatile 3-in-1 system, your formulations can easily be modified using one tube of color!

We want your clients to get the rich, long-lasting color only L’ANZA can provide. So before you turn and burn, consider the above suggestions for staying heat-free!

Do you have any other questions about Healing Color? Don’t forget – we have a dedicated Healing Color Hotline especially to assist you! Call (888) 831-5325 with your color queries.

This photographic competition awards outstanding beauty professionals in 13 categories and is the most prestigious beauty competition of its kind in North America.

Oscar and Wendy Bond created a time traveling journey through their collection of looks inspired by past decades of hairdressing – 60’s, 70‘s, 80‘s, 90’s and 2000’s. With a strict focus on shadow and light each image pops with iconic looks of the past with a vibrant modern twist.

Oscar Bond describes the vision as “…purposely monochromatic in its design, relying mainly on a massive palette of mid-tones. The element of high contrast gives the images a modern pop art feel. Technically, each look encompasses the use of strong lines, and heavy texture within classic shapes.”

Temperatures are on the rise, and L'ANZA LifeStyle has the goods on the sizzling summer trend - going "bronde."

Temperatures are on the rise, and L’ANZA LifeStyle has the goods on the sizzling summer trend – going “bronde.”

Part blonde, part brown, “bronde” was originally an ideal way to save money between salon visits. Instead of the usual all-over lightening, blondes camouflaged outgrowth by beginning with a darker base and adding more highlights. The trend has since been co-opted by celebrity brunettes looking for a perfect sun-kissed shade. Fashion, style, and beauty blog Stylelist (http://www.stylelist.com/) recently reported on the phenom in their post Brunettes Go. Now you and your clients can get the bronde effect with L’ANZA Healing Color! This trendy technique creates natural highlights, with a palette ranging from brown to cool blonde, without reds. Strategic color placement provides excellent durability, without worry of the menacing line of demarcation creeping up!

Ready to get started?

Our bronde model (pictured left) started with an existing Level 6G. Entire head was toned with a Translucent Healing Color Formula of equal parts 5N (Medium Natural Brown) and 4CG (Dark Copper Golden Brown).

Highlights use TWO formulas:

Pale Blonde – 1 part Decolorizer with 2 parts 20 Volume Cream Developer

Dark Blonde – 1 part 100V (Ultra Light Violet Blonde) with 2 parts 40 Volume Cream Developer

1. Beginning in the section below the ears, place random pairs of back to back foils; vary angles to create a natural look.

From the scalp to mid-shaft, use the Dark Blonde formula.

From mid-shaft to ends, use the Light Blonde formula.

Use “erratic diffusion” brush strokes to create irregular peaks and valleys within each foil, alternating patterns each time.

2. In areas above the ears place random single foils using a skip-weave technique and the Dark Blonde formula. Be sure to leave a small amount of natural hair at the top of the head to “spill over” the highlights.

3. Process for recommended time. Cleanse, condition, and STYLE.

If you would like a hard copy of the Beautiful Bronde technical sheet, email L’ANZA LifeStyle at kjenkins@davexlabs.com. They are available in English, French, and Spanish!
