Lanzarote Tourism at Golf Live in London

Lanzarote promoters attended the Golf Live event at the London Golf Club recently.

Golf Live is the largest golf promotion event in the UK and was held from the 18th to 20th May. The show includes a golf tournament as well as an exhibition area and golf demonstrations for attendees to practice with the best players and trainers.

A covered pavilion housed the stands with information on golf destinations including the Costa del Sol, Balearic Islands, La Manga and the Canary Islands from Spain as well as Cyprus, Greece and the Caribbean. Lanzarote shared the stand along with the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Around 12,000 visitors attended Golf Live over the weekend, the majority of whom were male (82%) and from the Southeast of England and Greater London with an average income of 74,000 pounds. The stand was also visited by couples and families who were researching ideas for holidays which Lanzarote can offer a sun and sand destination as well as golf.

Turismo Lanzarote commented that golfers have a high purchasing power which makes it a priority for the island to attend these shows to present an attractive and different offer and demonstrate that we can compete with the top golf destinations in the world.

Canarian Day 2012

The 30th of May is the Día de Canarias, a time to celebrate the old traditions and enjoy the culture of Canarian life. A whole host of events have been announced starting from this weekend and through next week, Wednesday is also a fiesta holiday. The date is commemorative of the first session in Canarian Parliament which was held on the 30th May 1983.

Sunday 27th May

Teguise Market

10:00 – 13:00 Teguise will celebrate the Día de Canarias at the market on Sunday with special activities in the Carpa de La Villa which is the big white tent on Plaza Maretas. Visitors to the market will be able to sample local tapas dishes from three local restaurants Casa Cristóbal, La Tahona and El Chiringuito such as costillas con piñas (ribs with pineapple), caldo de millo (soup with millet), the price is €3 per sample including a glass of wine. There will be traditional musical entertainment from Agrupación Folclórica Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, sporting displays of Lucha Canaria and Pelotamano and farming exhibition showing how corn is processed.

Tuesday 29th May

Teatro Insular

21:00 A free concert will be held at the Teatro Insular in Arrecife, tickets are limited to 2 per person and should be collected from the office at the theatre on the 28th & 29th (08:00 – 15:00) prior to the concert. The concert will be performed by Jóvenes Cantadores (Young Singers), the evening opens with a rendition of the Canarian anthem then a speech by Pedro San Ginés, the President of the Cabildo. The group which has 12 musicians aged between 16 – 25 will then perform a selection of songs from their two albums Homenaje and Parranda y CienporCien.

The waterpark in Costa Teguise is offering a 2 x 1 admission for the Día de Canarias. They will be offering tasting of local products including cheeses, potatoes, mojo salsas and wine during the day. Entertainment has been organised with Batucada Menuda Caña, Bob Esponja, Club de lucha Tao and Lnazuma Yudo Club.

Lanzarote Wine Festival Run 10th June 2012

The Wine Run organised by Club La Santa has become a popular event for both runners and walkers alike living or visiting the island of Lanzarote.

This year the event course will be run in reverse due to the number of participants, we’ve outgrown the fabulous location of the Bodega Rubicón! The press conference for the race confirmed that they are expecting 2,000 participants to take part in the 21km half marathon trail run or 10km walk through the wine region of Lanzarote. If you would like to enter for this years race, please register as soon as possible before the 1st June as places are in demand and we don’t want you to be disappointed.

This is a lovely event combining sport and gastronomy, walkers can stroll through the stunning landscape of La Geria stopping at the plentiful aid stations to sample wine as well as rehydrate with water.

A food festival has been added to the agenda for this year’s race, this will be situated next to the church in Mancha Blanca for Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June.

Participants should park in Mancha Blanca, a bus service has been provided by the organisers to transport the runners and walkers to their respective start points.

There should be a good atmosphere at the finish with the food festival where visitors can sample local cuisine from 15 different establishments for €1 per serving. Additionally there will be traditional music and dj’s for entertainment.

Entry costs €15 for walkers and €30 for runners, payment is made in person when you collect your race number the day before. There is a time limit of 5 hours for both distances. Runners must wear the Championchip, no mention has been made of a deposit but it would be advisable to have an additional €25 with you when you check in the day before just in case.

Club La Santa Hotel

The construction contract for the new hotel to extend Club La Santa was signed on Tuesday 22nd May 2012.

Chief Executive of Club La Santa, Niels Feerup and Miguel Morales the owner of Hormiconsa signed the contract which was witnessed by Event Director, Kenneth Gasque and Hotel Director Solveig Olsen as well as Carlos Morales the architect in charge of the project, Jesús Machin the Mayor of Tinajo and Santiago Martín the Techinical Director from Hormiconsa.

The Danish company have invested 30 million Euros for this project in Lanzarote, the new four star hotel will have 300 beds situated within 96 apartments as well as extending the sports facilities, completion is expected by late 2013.

For anyone not familiar with Club La Santa, they have been offering sports holidays in Lanzarote for years and are based at the village of La Santa within the municipality of Tinajo on the opposite side of the island to the tourist resorts.

Casting Session Biosfera Plaza, 27th May 2012

The Biosfera Plaza shopping centre in Puerto del Carmen are holding casting sessions for individual singers and dancers on Sunday.

Registration is open until the 27th to participate, the form can be downloaded below and taken to the C.C. Biosfera Plaza between 10:00 – 13:00 or Artilanz in Arrecife 18:00 – 21:00. The pre casting session will be held at the Biosfera Plaza in Puerto del Carmen at 17:00 – 19:00 for singers and 19:00 – 21:00 for dancers.

The singers and dancers will participate in the Festival de Baile (dancing) on the 8th June and Festival de la Canción (singing) on the 13th June to select the best five from each category.

The top five selected will then perform in the Gran Final on the 22nd June with prizes for 1st and 2nd places.

San Isidro Farmers Fair in Uga, 26th & 27th May 2012

The V Muestra de Ganado San Isidro Labrador de Uga will be held in the Recinto Ferial at Uga this weekend.

Visitors to the market can expect to find a comprehensive exhibition of animals, camel rides as well as demonstrations of milking and cheese making. Around fifty farmers from the municipality of Yaiza and other areas of Lanzarote will participate in the show bringing more than 300 species of goats, sheep, pigs, horses and camels.

There will also be entertainment with sports demonstrations, folk groups and crafts, the event has been organised by the Department of Agriculture at Yaiza council with the support of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and marks the end of the Fiestas San Isidro.

The opening ceremony is at 11am on Saturday although the fair is open from 10am, the programme includes:

During the show a house close to the fairground will be opened to the public where they can see traditional tools used in farming the land in Lanzarote. Yaiza council would like to invite everyone to come and enjoy the livestock show over the weekend.

It’s also a great opportunity to visit the weekly farmers market in Uga which has recently been revamped, this is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 to 1.30pm and situated next to the church. Stalls include homemade pastries, fruits, vegetables, cheese, fish, wine, liqueurs, jams, organic products and handcrafts.
