Lanzarote Football, Gimnástica Torrelavega 5 Lanzarote 0

Lanzarote were once again torn apart by a far superior team on a wet, cold and windy day in the top North of Spain and for the second time this season conceded five goals. The Rojillos, who are used to playing their football in tropical conditions did not acclimatize themselves well and within 15 minutes found themselves 2-0 down. The first was in the ninth minute. A harmless ball delivered into the 18 yard box left the Rojillos defence hesitant and striker Dani Cobo gratefully accepted the free gift and blasted his side into a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later and Lanzarote keeper Floro could only parry a shot from the edge of the area and centre forward Collado simply passed the ball into the open net from close range. In the 38^th minute Collado broke through the Lanzarote defence for the umpteenth time and neatly set up team mate Nando who buried the ball past Floro and sent his team into the half time break with an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Rojillos manager Carmelo Hernández brought on some width for the second half with wingers José Manuel and Ayoze Pérez both being introduced replacing Santi Torres and Maikel Padrón. Lanzarote began to press forward and held the majority of possession early in the second half though this only led the home side to produce deadly counter attacks. In the 53^rd minute Torrelavega were awarded a penalty with defender Ángel Gil bringing down the talented Collado inside the area. The Rojillos keeper saved well from the strike by defender Siro which gave Lanzarote just a glimmer of false hope. That glimmer was extinguished on the hour mark and in the 77^th minute strikes from Collado and Cursi finished the rout and the Rojillos then faced a long and tiring trip back to Lanzarote.

This win pushes Gimnástica Torrelavega into third in the table and on course for Segunda A (championship) football. This battering leaves the Rojillos shipwrecked somewhere off the coast of North Africa and a million miles from safety. On the positive side they will be returning to blue skies and temperatures in the mid 20´s with the sea being a very pleasant 22 degrees. Next week Lanzarote play at home to the much improved Badajoz side Villanovense

La Bocaina Restaurant is situated on the roundabout at the entrance to Playa Blanca and has been owned by Nina and Paul Ecob since 2006. This restaurant is well known in the area offering a modern European fine dining experience with their menu and daily specials.

There are two sittings for Christmas Day but be quick as the second sitting is now fully booked! For the first sitting the doors open at midday and you will be greeted with a Kir Royale and sit down at 1pm for the traditional Christmas lunch, please download the full menu below but here’s a hint at what’s on offer. Priced at €60 per adult and €30 for children under 12.

Appetisers: Homemade celery soup with a hint of stilton, salmon & prawn timbale, asparagus and bacon terrine or spinach and mushroom tart

Intermediate Course: Champagne sorbet

Main Course: Choice of roast turkey, monk fish, steak pie or ratatouille & goats cheese gratin all served with roasted potatoes, mashed potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts and honey roasted parsnips

Desserts: Christmas pudding, key lime pie, poached pear or a selection of ice creams & sorbets

On New Year’s Eve there is a special menu (download below) including a glass of Kir Royale on arrival followed by a 5 course meal and not forgetting the Spanish tradition of 12 grapes at midnight. There will be entertainment from singer Craig Andrews and the restaurant is ideally placed to enjoy the view of the celebratory fireworks. The menu is priced at €75 per head.

Mountain Bike Routes in Lanzarote

A new mountain bike route around the island of Lanzarote was inaugurated on the 3rd December 2009 at the Castillo de San José. The total route is 205.67 kilometres in length but has been divided up into 6 individual routes that connect with each other.

Each of the routes have been graded in their level of difficulty, road surface and maps with full route details are available for download below, courtesy of the website Lanzarote en Bici. The MTB routes were unveiled by professional cyclist Iñaki Lejarreta Errasti who attended the Olympic Games 2008.

Route 1: Arrecife to Arrieta

Distance: 29.5km

Level: Easy

Surface: 10% tarmac road 90% dirt track

Route 2: Arrieta to Ye

Distance: 23.57km

Level: Very difficult

Surface: 75% tarmac road 25% dirt track

Route 3: Ye to Caleta de Famara

Distance: 41.5km

Level: Difficult

Surface: 15% tarmac road 85% dirt track

Route 4: Caleta de Famara to Yaiza

Distance: 39.4km

Level: Difficult

Surface: 25% tarmac road 75% dirt track

Route 5: Yaiza to Playa Quemada

Distance: 46km

Level: Difficult

Surface: 15% tarmac road 85% dirt track

Route 6: Playa Quemada to Arrecife

Distance: 46km

Level: Easy

Surface: 85% tarmac road 15% dirt track

The routes have been marked with small signals that will either be painted onto the road when on the tarmac sections and on posts when on dirt tracks. The signals are white squares 120x120 mm with an equilateral triangle and two circles – these symbols will be painted red when the route will take more than a day to complete, yellow if possible in a day and brown when in a restricted zone such as a National Park. There is also a number of the route and this will correspond to the difficulty level green is easy, blue = average difficult, red = difficult and black = very difficult.

The routes have been designed with both residents and tourists in mind there are tracks for cyclists with all levels of ability, the easiest ones listed are route 1 from Arrecife to Arrieta and route 6 from Playa Quemada to Arrecife. Aladdin on Skates, Puerto del Carmen,13th December 2009

Roller skaters from all over Lanzarote have been training for a performance of Aladdin which will be held in Puerto del Carmen on the 13th December 2009. The skating schools (escuelas de patinaje) from Tías, Arrecife, Playa Honda, San Bartolomé, Costa Teguise, Tahiche and Tinajo will be performing with Italian skater Simone Fraietta to bring you the magic of Aladdin in a pre Christmas spectacular.

Entrance to the show performed in the Plaza del Varadero in the Old Harbour area of Puerto del Carmen is free and starts at 20.30pm on Sunday 13th December.

Live Christmas Gig, Mulligans,18th December 2009

Mulligan’s Irish Bar are pleased to announce their first Live Christmas Gig in Aid of Lanzarote’s Children’s Charities. There will be a number of live acts including a debut from Holly Duffy as well as The Skatoons, The Unusual Suspects, Joy Council, Elaine Carpenter, Soul Commitments and The Nauty Boyz.

The Horizon Singers are pleased to announce the dates for their third edition of their Christmas Concert, this time entitled “Carols Rejoice!”. The concerts will be held at 8pm in the Casa de la Cultura Benito Pérez Armas in Yaiza on the 16th and 17th December and will include many well known carols as well as other festive music.
