We’ve previously featured some of the walks available through Lanzarote Active Club, there are more that we haven’t experienced yet, but are definitely on our to do list.

Bodega Hopping Wine Walk

Lanzarote Active Club’s wine tasting and bodega guided tour takes visitors through the local wine growing area La Geria and gives a glimpse into the process of the wine production too.

The group will learn of the very specific history and peculiarities of wine making on the island. A walk through the vineyards allows us to see the unique landscape and cultivation,that you won´t see anywhere else in the world.

This experience will lead you through 4 traditional wineries each of them with their special charm! Occasionally you will have the chance of meeting the winemakers and their families during their daily chores. In each winery we will taste the best wines of the year complemented by traditional homemade tapas.

This excursion is highly educational and will give you a general insight into the fascinating world of wine and will help you understand and appreciate wines of Lanzarote in an easy and fun way!

Peñas del Chache Walk

Peñas del Chache is the name of the highest peak of Lanzarote (671m) and is located on the iconic Famara cliff, one of the oldest places on the island, dating back approximately 11 million years.

This guided walk embraces much more than just the highest point on the island. The trek starts from the wild and beautiful Famara Beach, bordered on the right side by the majestic massif and on the left by the tiny village of Famara, populated mostly by fisherman and surfers.

Climbing the cliff the group can experience an abundance of vegetation. Species such as Canarian Lavender, Balsamipherous Spurge, purple bells of the endemic Echium Lancerottensis, Scillas, are just a few to be seen. Approaching the top, especially in the spring months, brings an explosion of life; it’s hard to believe this is arid Lanzarote.

Gullys and hillsides are covered with a carpet of an endemic daisy (Archyrantemum Madeirensis) which lives exclusively on the Famara cliff. Closer to the top, another endemic plant – Ferula Lancerottensis can be found growing up to 2 metres high with flowers that form big yellow “pompons” and look like something from “Alice in Wonderland”. Arriving at the top, the landscape of the volcanoes of the south and the hilltop chapel of Our Lady of the Snows can be seen. Relaxing on the top and enjoying amazing views of the Atlantic and islets of the Marine Reserve Graciosa, Montaña Clara & Alegranza is a delight. The group will then descend into the fertile Valley of the 1000 Palm Trees – the town of Haría. With its noble houses and almost biblical architecture, the view also reinforces the knowledge of how close the island is to Africa.

Los Ajaches Walk

The Ajaches is a Heritage protected mountain range of 7.5km, its peaks reaching 609 m. The site contains many paleontological areas with fossils from the lower Pliocene Epoch.

The walk starts at the lovely town of Femés, where the group visits the chapel of Saint Marcial of Rubicón, the first patron saint of the island. From the start of the excursion large coverings of Euphorbias and Wild Tuneras can be seen especially during the months of spring. There are also carpets of Snake Garlic and Scillas (Scilla Haemorrhoidalis).

The hike delivers spectacular views of the Timanfaya National Park which open up to one side with ocean views to the other. The descent through the gully exhibits flocks of sheep and goats. From the wild life present, it is also evident that the area is home to Kestrels, the omnipresent Berthelot´s Pipit (a Canarian endemism) and also the beautiful and iconic Hoopoe and Southern Grey Shrike.From the cliffs at the end of the walk fantastic sea views can be appreciated and just before arriving at the final destination, the little village of Playa Quemada, where the group can choose to take a dip from the beach with its fine black sand. Nature lovers will also like the presence of the Pulicaria Canariensis flowers which are abundant in this area.

La Graciosa Island

This is an easy and delightful excursion that will allow you to get to know and enjoy the beauty of this little paradise to its fullest.

After collection from your accommodation, we drive to the port of Órzola in the north of Lanzarote. Depending on the weather we will take either a fast and fun zodiac or ferry boat to cross to the port of Caleta de Sebo, the only village in La Graciosa with approximately 500 inhabitants, most of them fishermen and sailors. The walk on the east coast will take us through landscapes of dunes and lava flows, erosion canyons and tucked away beaches. The walk itself is easy, however due to the terrain it is necessary to wear good closed walking shoes. After approximately 1.5 hours (if we don’t stop for a dip in one of the beaches before), we’ll arrive to what used to be the original settlement, Pedro Barba with approximately 15 houses. This village has no steady residents any longer but the houses were restored and they are occasionally used as holiday homes. Pedro Barba is comopletely empty most of the year, but nicely kept and the houses conserved the peculiar architecture of original Graciosa homes. We will also find there a lovely beach of golden sand, with the opportunity to relax, swim and snorkel.

After this refreshing break, we will get into a jeep to explore the rest of the island. More stunning beaches, volcanoes, arches created by lava flows and amazing ocean views everywhere.

Around 15:00 our jeep will drop up back to Caleta de Sebo, where we will sit in a restaurant overlooking the harbour for a nice traditional fresh fish lunch. After that we’ll have just about time to visit the charming church and stroll through the sand covered streets before we take our ferry back to Lanzarote.

Events in Puerto del Carmen 2013

The tourism department in Tías have produced a calendar of events happening in the resort of Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote from May to December 2013.

The May and June events are typically Canarian where you can experience the traditions and culture of Lanzarote. July sees the return of the popular Summer Music Festival and the Pride Festival. Puerto del Carmen celebrates for almost two weeks in August with the focus on the old harbour in commemoration of the patron saint of mariners and namesake. September brings an end of summer party and a tapas food fair. It wouldn’t be October without a beer festival! Ocean Lava moves to November this year, where elite lycra clad athletes swim, bike and run in a similar event to Ironman, although half the distance. The Christmas Market will be held in early December over the long holiday weekend, finishing the year with a New Year’s Eve celebration.

Lanzarote Football, Club Atlético Victoria 0 UD Lanzarote 1

The Rojillos sign off the season with an away win in Tenerife from a goal in the opening minute by Echedey.

The only thing both clubs had to play for was to see which team would finish in 14^th position. The Tenerife side needed a win whereas a draw for Lanzarote would suffice.

Many of the regulars such as Ángel Gil, Kamara and goalkeeper Agoney were suspended so Rojillos manager Adolfo Pérez gave full starts to youngsters Chéyen, Dámaso and also Fran Machín came off the bench late on to make his debut.

The game could not have started any better for the Rojillos. A corner in the opening minute by Marcos Cabrera found Echedey on the far post who poked the ball home to give Lanzarote a 0-1 lead.

The hosts then began to dominate and in the 8^th minute Rojillos goalkeeper made a fine save from a free kick and moments later he did the same from the penalty spot when he parried the spot kick after striker Héctor had been brought down.

In the 20^th minute Lanzarote had a chance to double their lead when a shot from Juanca was saved on the second attempt by the Tenerife keeper. The home side had a couple of opportunities to pull level before the break but the half ended with the Rojillos 0-1 up.

The second half began with Lanzarote looking to protect their narrow advantage and with Atlético looking to draw level. Stand in keeper Adonay was having an inspired match as Lanzarote relied on the counter attack as their main threat.

In the 69^th minute Rosmen´s shot was well saved by the Atlético keeper but the rebound fell to Echedey but he could only blast the ball over the bar.

The home side dominated the final few minutes but Lanzarote´s young side defended well and took home the final three points of the season.

Las Palmas B ended the season as Champions following a thumping 4-0 win at home to Las Zocas. It has been a good season for Las Palmas with their first team on the verge of a playoff place for entrance into Spain’s Primera league, not bad considering they were bottom of the table in November.

The final play off place went to Unión Viera even though Mensajero won their final home match 6-3. The La Palma side were bitterly disappointed last week when they surrended a 0-2 lead to 10 man Lanzarote.

Mensajero even appealed to the Spanish FA for all three points by claiming that Lanzarote´s 15 year old debutant Chéyen wasn’t registered. The lad came on in the 95^th minute and played all of 30 seconds.

No sympathies from Lanzarote to the La Palma team but congratulations are in order to Gran Canaraian side Unión Viera in claiming the final playoff spot for entry into Segunda B (League 1) following their 5-0 home win versus CD Vera.

The road closures have been confirmed for tomorrow’s Ironman Lanzarote event. To protect the cyclists, some of the roads will be open in one direction only, and others will be closed to traffic.

La Santa Youth Hostel

The Alberque Juvenil in La Santa has been closed since 2008. The Cabildo of Lanzarote have published an announcement in the Las Palmas Official Gazette this week, opening a tender process to manage this youth hostel for the next 10 years.

The tender to manage the operation of the youth hostel in La Santa was published on Wednesday 15th May amounting to 360,000 euros for a 10 year management period. Re-opening of this centre is a priority for Migdalia Machín, the councillor for youth at the Cabildo, who commented that this youth centre offers a complementary alternative for practice of sports, environmental, educational and recreation for youths.

Ensuring that this youth centre in Tinajo becomes fully operational again was one of the legislation commitments made by Pedro San Ginés, the president of Lanzarote.

The Alberque Juvenil in La Santa has a capacity for 120 places with bedrooms, dining room, library, multipurpose rooms and a sports field.

Grand Opening Slattery's Traditional Irish Bar

Some of you have already discovered the warm welcome offered by Pat & Donna the owner’s of Slattery’s situated on the Fariones end of the Avenida Las Playas in Puerto del Carmen.

The bar opened on the 3rd May and already has a great atmosphere, there’s plenty of sports coverage in the day including the GAA Football Championship and live music each night from 21:30.

As you would expect Slattery’s serve a fabulous pint of Guinness as well as your favourite tipple. In the daytime it’s the bar’s homemade scones served with mugs of Barry’s or Lyons Irish tea that are in demand.

The official opening of the bar will be held at 21:00 next Friday 24th May, everyone’s welcome so pop in and enjoy the craic.

Life on two wheels

A new road safety campaign has been launched by the Servicio de Educación Vial del Cabildo called “La vida en dos ruedas” to raise awareness of the vulnerability of cyclists on the road. The information is aimed at both drivers and cyclists which are becoming more numerous in Lanzarote due to success of marketing the island as a sports destination for training and events.

The “Life on two wheels” road safety campaign has been released in Spanish, English & German, the slogan “Tu seguridad y la de los demás, en tus manos está” translates to “Your safety and that of others, is in your hands”.

Ten Tips For Drivers

1. When overtaking a cyclist or group of cyclists it is essential to leave a gap of 1.5 metres, this is the minimum legal distance established for overtaking. If there isn’t sufficient space to overtake, you should wait and not take unnecessary risks.

2. When you are going to overtake a cyclist or group of cyclists, reduce your speed. Overtaking at high speeds can cause the cyclist to lose their balance and fall due to the turbulence caused by the car overtaking.

3. On roads with light traffic use your horn to warn the cyclist that you are in the vicinity, but not too close as to frighten them so they could fall causing a high risk situation.

4. Pay attention to the cyclists manoeuvres as they can move with speed and agility. Take caution especially in an urban environment.

5. Remember that a group of two or more cyclists can ride in parallel according to the Road Safety Act and do not honk your horn to recriminate them. They are riding legally, be patient and overtake the group when there is no risk.

6. Signal your manoeuvres well in advance to warn cyclists in your proximity of your direction, do not brake or turn suddenly.

7. Legislation dictates that cyclists have priority over cars, so if you wish to take a left or right turn, enter a crossing or roundabout you must wait for the cyclist to pass. With a group of cyclists, if the first rider of the group has entered the intersection or roundabout then you must let them all pass.

8. Remember on a single lane road in each direction, it is prohibited to overtake another vehicle if there is an oncoming cyclist the other way.

9. When parking, look in your rear view mirror before opening the car door to exit, especially in side streets and narrow roads, in case a cyclist is approaching from behind.

10. Respect the 1.5 metres gap between cyclists and your vehicle. Remember that cyclists are very vulnerable on the road.

Ten Tips For Cyclists

.1. It is mandatory to wear a bike helmet when you ride on inner city roads and highly recommended for use in urban areas. Use an approved helmet to reduce the risk of severe head injury in the event of a crash.

2. Make yourself visible. Try to wear bright clothing rather than dark tones so that you can be seen by drivers easily. At night or in tunnels you must use a white light at the front and a rear reflector on the bike and wear reflective clothing.

3. Have respect for the rules of the road, taking note of the signs and traffic lights, a cyclist can be fined the same as any other vehicle. Remember that it is also prohibited to ride a bicycle whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

4. Signal your manoeuvres with your arms, giving sufficient notice to other road users. Ride in a straight line where ever possible, zig and zag movements between traffic and parked cars can be dangerous as you disappear from the view of the motorist.

5. Do not ride wearing headphones or talking on your mobile phone as you will be distracted from the traffic around you.

6. On an open road and where ever possible ride on the hard shoulder, if this is not possible, ride on the right hand side of the lane. Where there is a bike lane, use it.

7. Travel in the same direction as the traffic and never the other way round in the same lane as oncoming traffic.

8. Keep your bike in good working order with regular maintenance to check your wheels, tyres, brakes, chain and lights.

9. Where possible cycle with a group of riders as you are more visible to motorists than a single cyclist.

10. If you are cycling as part of a group, do not occupy the whole lane of the road, ride two by two in an orderly fashion behind each other and check for approaching cars before overtaking another member of the group.

Lanzarote has enough road space for motorists and cyclists to enjoy together, we don’t suffer with major congestion and most of the roads are in good repair, so please be patient, keep safe and enjoy the island.
