Wow, Feel Real Textures Right on Your Display (video)

When I say, 'feel textures' I don't mean vibrations of haptic feedback... what I meant was that you can actually feel and sense textures by touching the screen on a flat-panel TV, computer, smartphone or tablet display.... (porn industry rejoices!)

Tokyo based company Senseg, has a working prototype called the Feel Screen that can do just that. By touching different areas of the screen the user will feel different degrees of friction whether their fingers move or not.

The feeling could project contours and edges of things in front of you, and creates the sensation of everything from silk to rough terrain. Imagine feeling the detailed environments of your online game? Or the sensation of keys when using your smartphone to message? Dubbed the "Feel Screen," the technology doesn't rely on any moving parts or additions to the flat screen. This means it can be integrated into just about any flat screen device from your phone to your TV.

Although just a prototype, the company is hopeful that the technology will be widely available in the next 2 years. Just think of the possibilities...

A Chandelier That Projects Trees On The Wall (4pics)

Check out this unique and clever chandelier by Hilden & Diaz titled the Forms in Nature. What is clever about it is that it projects a 360-degree shadow of trees and roots onto the surrounding walls...

Interestingly, the roots are those elements of the forest that are the most visible. Thereby the sculpture is not only mirrored, but also turned upside down in Hilden & Diaz' artwork. [...] The shadows engulfs the room and transforms the walls into unruly shadows of branches bushes and gnarled trees. Mirrorings are thrown out upon the walls and ceilings and provide weak Rorschach-like hints of faces, life and flow of consciousness. Dimming the lights transforms the installation and one senses a weak fire burning deep in the center of the forest.

Pretty cool, huh...!?

Probably the most Inspirational thing you'll see all day :)

As we move into Friday and put our busy week to a close.... I urge everybody to watch this truly inspirational video put together by The Glossary based on author David Foster Wallace's 2005 'This is Water' commencement address for the graduating class of Kenyon College.

Although the messages in the video touch on things that most of us already realize or have thought of... I immediately started to view things differently.
The video is a short 9-minute video and I recommend everyone to watch it.

However, the resulting speech didn't become widely known until 3 years later, after his tragic death. It is, without a doubt, some of the best life advice we've ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education.We made this video, built around an abridged version of the original audio recording, with the hopes that the core message of the speech could reach a wider audience who might not have otherwise been interested. 3D Portraits Created From Discovered DNA....!! (6pics)

Check out this incredible art series, Stranger Visions by artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg...
In case you were wondering, there is a reason why the portraits are so realistic in detail.
It is because they were all created using DNA she found on items discovered on the street (i.e. chewing gum, cigarette butts, hair, ect.)

After being fixed and inspired on a insignificant piece of hair at a gallery exhibit, the artist wondered who the hair belonged to and 'what' they may have looked like... Dewey-Hagborg worked with a DYI biology lab in Brooklyn called Genspace where she met a number of biologists who taught her everything she now knows about molecular biology and DNA.

The process is amazing... the artist finds objects such as a chewing gum on the sidewalk, takes it to the lab, extracts the DNA and then prints off a face of the person that chewed it....!!
Of course there is a whole lot of technical science magic in there as well.
Below is an interview with the artist who explains the process best:

So I extract the DNA in the lab and then I amplify certain regions of it using a technique called PCR - Polymerase Chain Reaction. This allows me to study certain regions of the genome that tend to vary person to person, what are called SNPs or Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms.
I send the results to my PCR reactions off to a lab for sequencing and what I get back are basically text files filled with sequences of As, Tx, Cs, and Gs, the nucleotides that compose DNA. I align these using a bioinformatics program and determine what allele is present for a particular SNP on each sample.
Then I feed this information into a custom computer program I wrote which takes all these values which code for physical genetic traits and parameterizes a 3D model of a face to represent them. For example gender, ancestry, eye color, freckles, lighter or darker skin, and certain facial features like nose width and distance between the eyes are some of the features I am in the process of studying.
I add some finishing touches to the model in 3D software and then export it for printing on a 3D printer. I use Zcorp printer which prints in full color using a powder type material, kind of like sand and glue.
