Gastric Lap Band And Pregnancy

Having a gastric lap band does prevent food from going into your stomach which is what it is meant to do. It is meant to make you feel full even when you are not. As you get along in your pregnancy you may find your baby is under weight. I know two women who had gastric lap bands and who lost their babies at approximately 5 months gestation. Now this is not proof that it was due to the gastric lap band but why take the chance with your babies health at risk.

I recommend if you find out you are pregnant to open up the gastric band for the duration of the pregnancy. If you do not open it and you suffer with morning sickness you will find the gastric lap band very uncomfortable. Not to mention it can slide up and move in position which can cause a whole heap of concerns for you and your unborn baby.

You can always have the gastric lap band re inflated after the birth of your child and proceed to lose the weight that you will gain during pregnancy.

If you decide not to deflate your gastric lap band for the pregnancy and you do suffer from either a miscarriage or still birth you will never know if it was because you chose not to open it up. At least with it opened up you will get the food and nutrients through to your baby. You will have a bigger opening for morning sickness, so it wont be so painful.

This information is only as a guide but I find it very interesting that I only know 2 people with the gastric lap bands and they both lost their babies around the 5 month period. So now I recommend to everyone that will listen to open up the gastric lap band during pregnancy.

Inflation Of The Lap Band

The inflation of the lap band usually needs to be done when your weight has plateaued or food that you normally should not be eating can now pass through the opening of the lap band.

The way the doctor inflates the lap band is by using a needle and syringe of saline. The syringe is placed through the under the skin into the ball of the lap band and the saline is injected into the ball which then tightens the lap band when this is happening you can sometimes feel constricting around the lower throat area. The doctor will generally get you to drink some fluid just to ensure that the fluid will pass through the lap band opening.

Once the lap band has been re inflated you will not be able to eat many of the foods that you could eat before the inflation occurred. you will also need to be careful to chew your foods very well as foods that you think you can eat may still get stuck and the objective has to be to not vomit if you do not have to.

This is done in a doctors surgery and will take only about 5 minutes to do.

Lap Band Surgery Scars

Lap band Surgery Scars are minimal usually it all depends on if the lap band is put in place by key hole surgery or if they have any major problems you will need to be cut open to place the lap band into position. Below is a typical picture of what you can expect after keyhole lap band surgery has started to heal.

These incisions will leave scars but they are very light on my partner who had lap band surgery over 10 years ago.

The picture above depicts the usual keyhole placement of the lap band, but there have been people who have had major problems during surgery who have ended up with much more scaring than shown. The picture is for illustration purposes only and every lap band procedure will be different depending on the surgeon and the operation. If all goes to plan then you can expect to have scaring similar to what is pictured.

Lap Band After Surgery

Many People after years and years of trying to lose weight the conventional way are now turning to lap band surgery. Lap band surgery is one of the quickest ways to lose weight. But it does have its pro's and con's, as with everything these days there are the lap band supporters and the lap band non supporters.

Some people believe you should be just able to eat less, exercise more and have some will power and you will lose the weight and that lap band surgery is only for the weak or the ones with no will power. I am here to say that I believe that lap band surgery is the only answer for some people. After years and years of trying to lose weight the conventional way lap band surgery has bought a smile on the face of many of its recipients.

Once lap band surgery has occurred the post lap band surgery routine is one of clear fluids for a month, all soup has to have no lumps. Multivitamins must be taken because you are not eating enough vitamins that the body needs in your diet. Lots of drinks, basically whatever you can suck up through a straw.

You will lose the quickest amount of your weight within the first month

After the first month of surgery you can add thicker foods to your diet such as pureed or mashed vegetables, pureed meat or very flaky fish. Gradually as the months go on you can eat different types of foods and it is all trial and error. You can find one day a certain food will go down quite easily and on another day it may get stuck and you will have to vomit to get it back up.
