Guide Review - Painted Futura Laptop Desk

The Futura Painted laptop desk that I selected for review was the Largely Leopard pattern – I will admit that selecting the color/pattern was not easy. You can select from the currently available choices or view future color and pattern considerations for what may be available in coming months.

Usually there are some wires and a mini bungee cord cluttering the look of the thingThis was made from some plexi and an Ikea paper towel holder that I had laying around. I drilled some holes in the stainless steel crosspiece (don't try this without a drill press and graduated high speed bits). I counterbored 4 screws into the plexi and bolted it together. It works and looks good. There is some bounce due to the springiness of the thin steel. This setup allows me to use a keyboard, tablet and maintain proper ergonomics. I also strap a miniature bungee cord just below the keyboard, mostly for peace of mind.

Belkin released a Laptop Cooling Stand at Macworld this week, designed to help keep laptops cooler when in use, and possibly in response to recent problems with overheating batteries in some laptops.
The Belkin laptop stand has a curved design to allow additional airflow below the machine and also has a built-in fan that pushes air up, according to TechDigest. Due to this, we are not sure if the purpose of the stand is to cool the laptop or your lap, but either way the increased airflow would bring fresh cool air up to the machine and keep the hot air away from your legs.

Another cheap laptop desk option. gino from the netherlands used the ikea variera kitchen shelf (can't find the link on ikea website) which fits his MacBook to a T."since the shelf itself is perforated, it helps to cool the bottom of those overheating notebooks. i ended up mounting the shelf upside down on its legs (pix below does not show this as it is a composite picture using the original variera). this prevents the notebook from falling off the shelf should you push against it from the front or the back."

Logitech's take on tackling this problem is the new Comfort Lapdesk, a portable laptop desk designed to keep roaming computer users comfy, whether at home, in the office or on the road.

As concepts go, most designs stand on their own merit and need nothing else to exist for them to hopefully one day go into production. Then there are the more rare concept designs that are completely dependent on yet other concepts to be created in order for the first to exist. Got that? So now that we got that out of the way, check out the “DesCom” by Sung-kyu Nam. Completely dependent on the existence of a giant Samsung media centric laptop computer, this laptop desk beautifully and simply integrates the computer (almost) seamlessly into the desktop surface. Looks great when all together, but when the computer is gone you are left with a desk that has the only distinction of having an uneven surface. I love the idea but I think the negative surface created by the absence of the computer needs to be filled in or have another use. What do you think?
