Giles and Brother Home Repair

2014-01-11T16:53:00.001-08:00

This bracelet I have from Giles and Brother is one of two things I own that I truly care about. The second round of leather finally broke- not too bad considering I wear it on construction sites and in the shop 7 days a week- and I had to replace it. Every time I take it off to look at or work on it, I think about all the stuff I've made and learned since it's been on my wrist- and I'm grateful.

Jim Walrod in Complex Magazine

2014-01-11T13:17:00.003-08:00

Why You Should Know Terry Richardson's Latest Subject, Jim Walrod BY ANDREW LASANE If you follow Terry Richardson's Tumblr blog, you may have noticed these photos of a man who is not really a celebrity and is clearly not a supermodel, posing with a Captain America shield and standing outside of a massage parlor and wondered who he is and why he would be with the famed photographer. Jim Walrod is a prominent figure in the design world, but as this interesting New York Times article from 2002 explains, he's not really a designer, nor is he an interior decorator or an architect. While his job description may be complicated and undefinable, Walrod's influence and knowledge is vast and his contacts list is beyond impressive. Walrod has been called everything from design guru, to cultural historian, to a "furniture pimp" by Mike D of the Beastie Boys. His website describes him as a "self-trained interior designer," but his resumé goes much deeper than that. André Balazs' The Standard Downtown, Crunch Fitness Gyms, Caulfield's Restaurant in Beverly Hills, the United Colors of Benetton concept store, Hester Diamond (Mike D's mom)'s penthouse in Manhattan, and tons of other upscale restaurants and private residence designs have involved Walrod in some way or another. The "walking encyclopedia" is regarded as one of the most important invisible people in the industry, so you should probably get familiar. Jimwalrod.net is a good place to start. from: http://www.complex.com/art-design/2014/01/why-you-should-know-terry-richardsons-latest-subject-jim-walrod from: Terry's Diary on Tumblr

Walking Wounded: Egg Cup Infatuation

2014-01-05T16:16:00.000-08:00

I was thinking about old men in English countrysides eating soft boiled eggs, wiping the runny yolk on linen napkins, discarding it like it was nothing. Then I thought about egg cups, these precious bowls we put the delicate eggs in. And I realized that infatuation is just like an egg cup- it's beautiful and ornate, but holds something that is ultimately unfulfilling. I made this out of wood on the lathe, plunger, pin wheel, paint, epoxy, stain. I hope you like it.

Walking Wounded: Attachment

2013-12-25T16:03:00.000-08:00

I have been thinking about Attachment. How we want to take relationships and affections, plant them in a pot on our sills, box them up and keep them. My mind wants to mark each one as "good" or "bad" keeping these determinations in their pots, and leaving them there. But that's not the truth. Attachment is pine, an industrial sprinkler cover, and a pinwheel. I hope you like it.

Walking Wounded: PROM

2013-12-15T15:15:00.000-08:00

I just finished a series of Corsages I wanted to share with you. I had been thinking about Prom. How proms are full of corsages and forced intimacy. We all wear the same corsages and boutonnieres. We all get dressed up and yet we all have the requisite horror story that comes along with it. Then, I realized that prom is exactly like everything else. We get spruced up, our mom's take photos, and then we get sent out into the night pregnant with expectation and excitement and usually we end up nowhere how we thought or anticipated. So, the corsages are pinwheel monochromes mounted on stained wood, noting our repeated / similar experiences- each with its own story. Corsage 1: (RED)Lost virginity Corsage 2: (Green)Backseat '88 Volvo Station Wagon Corsage 3: (Yellow)Passed Out in the Yard Corsage 4: (Blue)Slept with Someone Else PROM:Group Corsage 5: Drunk Chaperone

Walking Wounded: Corsage In Process

2013-12-07T16:15:00.000-08:00

I've been pushing pretty hard the last six months and I'm feeling a little burned out. This one's been like pulling teeth and I've had to abandon three different ideas of what it would be. I hate feeling like I forgot how to make stuff..But a good friend once told me- you have to make the things that don't work to make the things that do.

Walking Wounded: Florush

2013-11-24T16:04:00.000-08:00

Florush I've been continuing with conical shapes and decided to make some flowers. It's made of galvanized steel and brass wire, hammered brass tubing, plunger heads, and rubberized paint. I was thinking about the excitement and potential waste in hasty romance when I decided to make it- hence flushing away flourishing. I hope you like it.

Walking Wounded: LeVar Burton Horn of Plenty

2013-11-03T13:29:00.000-08:00

LeVar Burton: Horn of Plenty All summer I was hearing the Reading Rainbow theme song in my head. I was also thinking about pinwheels. Then, at some point I started thinking about the horror movie, Candyman. In the film, the character has bees come out of his mouth. I thought to myself, who is LeVar Burton? He's a giant cornucopia with pinwheels exploding out of him- sending educational cartoon butterflies and inspiration to millions of kids via VHS. So, I made a giant cornucopia, about 4 1/2 feet long by over 2 feet wide out of blue foam insulation. Then, I used 50lbs of plaster to build up coats. After 20 hours of sanding I got to the shape I was after. I hope you like it, and I also hope that damn theme song will leave me be...

Walking Wounded Furniture & Sundry Toppled Cone

2013-10-14T15:42:00.000-07:00

I have been thinking about cones and dunce caps. I decided to make a wooden cone lamp object. It sits on a table as a knocked over cone. It is made from wood, mirrored mosaic interior, and the feet are steel. I hope you like it.

Walking Wounded Furniture & Sundry: Baby Changing Dresser

2013-09-10T18:21:00.000-07:00

I made this baby changing dresser for an expectant mother. It's almost 7 feet tall with a hanging bar in the upper cabinet for baby clothes, a changing surface, and four drawers for clothing etc.. She came wanting curved ends on the table and all corners rounded- a good project- I hope you like it.

Henry Miller

2013-08-29T10:31:00.000-07:00

"You see, I think it’s bad to think. A writer shouldn’t think much. But this was a work which required thought. I’m not very good at thinking. I work from some deep down place; and when I write, well, I don’t know just exactly what’s going to happen." -Henry Miller, Paris Review, 1961
