Character interview of Clay from Hope(less): Book One of the Judgement of the Six, by author Melissa Haag

A knock sounds at the door. Melissa scrambles to tuck the latest novel she’s reading under a sofa cushion and then runs to answer the door. The afternoon interviewee has arrived. Melissa peeks out the door and finds a scruffy looking man staring back. His longish hair partially covers his eyes and a beard covers his face. Despite his dubious appearance, she opens the door with a smile.

Melissa: Hi! Come on in. **steps aside and motions Clay in.**

Clay nods in greeting and enters.

Melissa: Please have a seat. **motions Clay to sit and takes a seat across from him in her slightly dusty living room.**

Melissa: I was so excited you agreed to this interview. After finishing Hope(less), I have so many questions for you. Can I get you anything to drink before we start?

Clay declines with a shake of his head.

Melissa: ** leans back into her chair and picks up a pad of paper to take notes.** Tell me, what did you think of Gabby when you first saw her?

Clay smiles slightly. His whisker’s twitch.

Clay: Pretty.

Melissa waits for a few seconds for Clay to say more, clears her throat, and then moves on when he remains quiet.

Melissa: What exactly happened that night you brought her back to the compound? I’m really curious about the leaves in her hair.

Clay shifts uncomfortably and shrugs.

Clay: Distraction.

Melissa: **blinks at his taciturn response.** Let’s talk about your favorite color. Why pink?

Clay: **grins wickedly and shrugs.** Bikini.

Melissa: Oh? **leans forward anticipating more detail, but is left waiting. Stifling a groan of frustration, moves on to the next question.** What made you decide to get a job from Dale?

Clay: **gives a full grin, showing teeth. His eyes crinkle at the corners.** Opportunity.

Melissa: **the sexy smile evokes memories of several scenes from Hope(less). Melissa shakes herself, and barely avoids sighing in a dreamy fashion.** What did you think of Gabby’s attempts to get rid of

you?

Clay: **a quick laugh escapes him.** Expected.

Melissa: **looks down at the blank note paper and scowls briefly before returning her focus to Clay.** I don’t want to give anything away for anyone who hasn’t read Hope(less), but tell me… how do you feel about how the book ended?

Clay: **the heart-melting smile returns.** Satisfied.

Melissa: **desperate for something to put to paper asks a simple yes or no question.** Have you shaved for Gabby yet?

Clay shrugs enigmatically.

Melissa: **quickly asks the next question.** Do you have any insight what will happen in the next installment of the series?

Clay shakes his head.

Melissa: Will we learn anything more about Gabby’s abilities?

Clay shrugs.

Melissa: **tries a different approach.** Now that Hope(less) is finished, what do you plan to do?

Clay: Wait.

Melissa: **frustration creeps into the next question.** We can expect to see you again, then?

Clay shrugs enigmatically.

Melissa: **makes a show of looking at her watch.** Well, look at the time! **Stands and extends hand.** I appreciate your time and your succinct answers. **leads Clay to the door.**

Clay nods and exits.

Melissa returns to the couch, digs out her Novel where the men actually speak in complete sentences, and escapes into another world.

Quick, read but lots to love. Such a cute and fun story. The snippet above tells it all but if you love a guy realizing that he already has everything he could ever want but he just needs to realize it, then this story is for you.

Doctor Charm loves his wife and daughters but he can't seem to let go of his evil ways. He's building a machine so that he can take over the world but in the meantime he has to win back the love of his life who has forgotten their life together. In a twist of character, Doctor Charm kinda becomes the good guy and saves his wife, winning her back, and finding out that she loved him all along, even without his machinations. He ends up ditching his own evil plans for love!

People often ask me, “How could you—a guy—write such a great Romance novel?”

My answer, “Don’t ever underestimate a male ego after a few glasses of wine!” In all seriousness, “Pink Slips and Glass Slippers” began as a dare. Sitting around a table of friends, sipping wine—okay gulping wine—I posed the question, “If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one book, which one would you choose?”

A female friend jumped on the question, answering with the title to a hugely popular Romance novel (one that I had little or no respect for. I won’t name it because it’s bad karma—and the table was nodding agreement). I knew my opinion was in the minority, but… I retorted, “Seriously? I could write so much better than that!”

After a pause that seemed to lap eternity, someone blurted, “Okay Mr. Bliss List, then do it!” Brief background time: my first book was “The Bliss List,” an inspirational career guide where the mystical meets the practical. In addition to opening the door to some incredible media exposure: live interviews on FoxNews, Daytime TV, The L.A. Times, CNN, Fortune, etc., the book landed on several bestseller lists and garnered four awards including “International Book of the Year.” (Reader’s Digest is publishing the second edition, release date: May 16. www.blisslist.com).

Back to the dare. The next day—without wine—I wrote a stepsheet with an intriguing plot and interesting characters. Three months later, 118,000 words magically appeared in a file named “Boardroom Trysts—Pink Slips and Glass Slippers.” I say magically because time stood still while I wrote it (including the middle of many nights). Ironically, my bliss became writing this story. My day jobs include Life Coach, Professional Inspirational Speaker, and CEO of an Executive Search Firm. But this story was so fun to write, it almost wrote itself.

Then, the tough part—editing it. I was able to clip 5,000 words after several grueling rewrites. After I couldn’t see straight, I did the smartest thing I’ve ever done— I turned it over to four separate female friends including Manuscript Consultant Sophie Powell. In addition to teaching English at Boston College (my Alma Mater), she’s also a successful author. Sophie provided brilliant insight (especially into my protagonist, Brooke Hart), but Sophie also provided great encouragement to stick with the story. Her original notes made the back cover: “I enjoyed every minute of Pink Slips and Glass Slippers and literally could not put it down—I gobbled it up with the compulsion and ease of one of my favorite beach reads, except I did not feel empty when I finished reading this novel—I felt warm inside, and inspired.”

My mission statement as an author is: “To provide inspiration to millions of people.” With three books published, I’m currently juggling six different book projects (Four fiction, two non-fiction), in addition to my other three day jobs. As long as it’s fun—and people continue to read—I will write until I draw my last breath.

My greatest challenge as an author? Writing steamy love scenes without using dirty words. No doubt about it. One astute reviewer wrote: “Steam yet Substance.” Let me know if you agree?

I have absolutely LOVED this series and was so glad to see Episodes Four and Five drop into my email. I have said before that short stories are not really my favourite read but these have changed my opinion totally.

I was so pleased to see Mike and Juliet's story being continued and there was definitely a big element of what will happen next? Such a tease! Thank god that I have Episode Five to read :) Thank you Riley for continuing this story!

The next story we're hundreds of years into the future and kick-ass females assasins, about time if you ask me. This was great and I'm looking forward to where this develops.

The last of the three is the sad story. I felt an automatic respect and protection for Jessica and with everything that happens to her. It can take me a whole lengthy book to feel attached to a character so props to Langston for doing it so quickly. I think I know where this one is heading and I like it :)

If you haven't read any of these books yet, hurry up - they are totally worth your time!

If you are a fan of UF Stone Cold Revenge is the book for you, it has a good story with interesting word building and heart wrenching plot but make sure to read the books in order.

Let's give a super warm welcome to Amanda Carlson =)

When did you first start writing?

I started writing roughly 16 years ago. I wrote a Middle Grade manuscript, which was a disaster! LOL. My very patient uncle told me that it may be a good idea to “pick a tense to write in” – meaning I was switching between past and present just about every other line. But I kept on with it, eventually writing a column in a local food and wine publication and short humorous essays about my kids. I started writing urban fantasy in 2008.

What attracted you to Urban Fantasy?

I love the world building. The fact that you can create anything you want is magical. I love how my story surprises me and I have license to make up all the rules.

Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you?

There are many! Harry Potter was ground breaking for me, as it was to many of us. JK Rowling created a world that was universally loved by adults and children. Lord of the Rings trilogy, brought back into vogue by the movies, was equally amazing. I re-read those in 2001. I’d always been and Anne Rice and Stephen King fan, jumping into those in high school. All of these authors in some way contributed to my love of fantasy.

If you could cast Rourke and Jessica for TV or a movie, which actors would you pick?

That is such a tough question. I’m terrible at this game. In my head they are their own characters in every way. I’d have to say that Jessica is a mix between a young Jennifer Garner and Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rourke would have to be a mix of Chris Helmsworth and Tom Hardy. But that said, I love that each of my readers have their own view of them. They can be anything you’d like them to be.

I love the chemistry between Jessica and Rourke, but her relationship with her friends and her family is even more compelling to me. How important are those relationships to you as an author and to Jessica in this new path her life has taken?

The relationships are the defining factor for me. In my mind from the very beginning Jessica wasn’t a tortured soul with an agenda. She is a stable, happy heroine. And she has a very strong bond with her family and friends, without them she would be lost. Having her have that strong family unit was the single most important thing to me about this series. I’m so glad you loved it too, and picked up on it, because it’s the greatest thing about her to me.

Favorites:

Favorite Paranormal themed Movie? I’d have to say Zombieland. I LOVE that movie. It continues to be one of my all time favorites.

Favorite Paranormal themed TV Show? The Walking Dead, followed closely by Game of Thrones.

Favorite Paranormal themed Book? I’d have to say Harry Potter is my all time favorite all around. Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series is my favorite PNR.

Favorite Genre that is NOT your own? I jump genres all the time. A few years ago it was all Historical Fiction, but now I’d have to say humor. I love David Sedaris and he’s my go-to when I need a break.

How many Books do you have planned for the series? I’m not sure, but ultimately how ever long it takes to get to the end.

What is coming up next for you? HOT BLOODED just released and COLD BLOODED comes out in the fall.

What are you working on right now? It’s a secret =)

Do you have any advice or tip to those like me that want to become a published Author someday?

I’ve had a real good mix of books to read recently and I’ll admit I wasn’t really expecting to enjoy this YA book.

I was SO wrong! The book is aimed for 11+ year olds and yes the book is totally suitable for those ages but I found myself also totally compelled into each page. Jake I immediately warmed to and felt a bit sorry for him as he is a teenager who is constantly moving around with his parents as they try to prove that ghosts exists. His life is totally at their mercy but also he doesn’t really believe in ghosts until he meets one!

I absolutely loved Frank and he was probably my favourite character in the book. His charming personality almost fell out of the pages and I found myself smiling every time his name was mentioned. With Jake helping Frank find out who killed him they have a great deal of banter which is fun to read and also makes this book more fun for the intended audience to read I think. I also really found Jake’s friend Tank very fun, she has her share of problems but she’s someone who girls reading this will relate to.

The ending is almost a cliffhanger but it is left open for another book and I really hope there is one. After being very sceptical I would really like to read a second book from this author carrying on this story. This book is perfect for teenagers and there is enough for adults too to keep you engaged, the story flows well and has good engaging characters. Also I’m very interested to see what else Tracy Lane will write next if it’s not another in this series, definitely an author to watch.

About the Tracy Lane:

I was fascinated with the paranormal when I was very young. I always felt

like someone was around me even when I was alone. It caused me to be inspired to write a paranormal book where a teenager can see and hear ghosts and actually makes friends with one.

I use to love to write short stories in school and always wanted to be a writer. But raising children and working jobs I just could not find the time to indulge my passion. Then my children grew up and I ended up having two teenagers at home who did not need as much attention from me. I started toying with the idea of writing once again. So setting aside 5 to 10 minutes per day to write at least one page I could end up with a book a year. Now Paranormal Properties is published and I have a list of 8 more books to write. I don't think I"ll be slowing down anytime soon.

Getting in a Gage Frame of Mind

Writing a novel from first person point of view means trying to get into a specific frame of mind so that the narrator’s voice rings true and consistent through the entire story. I’ve found that Gage, my tattoo artist narrator for the Asylum Tales series, I can most quickly return to his mindset through music.

Within the first few chapters of a new book, I usually start compiling a new music playlist. This process has two purposes. One is that the music starts to become associated with the character, past events, and things that will happen in the new book. The other purpose is that it forces me to start contemplating various aspects of the character’s personality.

I think what surprised me was the stark difference between the music I listened to while I was working on the Dark Days series and the music I gravitate to for the Asylum Tales. Both Mira’s voice and the storyline for Dark Days was considerably darker. During the years I worked on those books, I listened to a great deal of Nine Inch Nails (only during plotting), Marilyn Manson, Korn, Linkin Park, and a handful of movie scores such as Underworld, Constantine, Queen of the Damned, Sleepy Hollow, and Dracula.

But when it comes to Gage, none of those bands and scores work. By comparison, Gage is far more laid back and easy going. The quirky tattoo artist also has hope that everything is going to work out in the end. He also has a pretty good sense of humor, which has resulted in some interesting song choices.

When working with Gage, I was mainly drawn to Shaman’s Harvest and their Shine album, as well as a handful of Theory of a Deadman songs. I think Gage would argue that “Sound of Madness” by Shinedown is a particularly poignant song for him. During some of the darker chapters, I found myself drifting to Blue October’s Approaching Normal and Foiled albums. Scenes set in the tattoo parlor were often written to the Violent Femmes.

Long Distance Lovin'

Even couples living aboard space ships in the very distant future have to find ways to spice up their relationship. One of my absolute favorite scenes to write in Grabbed By Vicious takes a futuristic twist on the phone sex/Skype sex of today.

When Vicious sends Hallie on a luxurious week-long trip to see her sister in the distant space colonies, he gets a little antsy. Seeing his beautiful new wife on his screen gives him one deliciously naughty idea. It doesn't take much persuading to convince Hallie to give in to his

sinfully sexy idea…

***Excerpt from Grabbed By Vicious (Grabbed, Book 1)***

Vicious drummed his fingertips on his desk and stared at the vid screen as he waited for his call to Hallie to connect. He’d tried three times already but the satellites had been busy. It was late onboard the Valiant—he’d have to report for duty in less than five hours—but it wasn’t quite midnight at her hotel. He hated keeping track of time differences. Thank goodness there were apps for that.

The screen flashed green. He sat forward in anticipation. She’d been gone three days but it felt like a lifetime. Each call they’d shared had been quick and perfunctory. He was really hoping tonight’s call would be different.

Hallie’s grinning face filled the screen. “Vicious!”

“Hey, Kitten.” He smiled at her excitement. “How is your sister?”

“She’s great. Huge,” Hallie added with a laugh. “She’s having a girl, by the way.”

“That’s nice.” He wasn’t good at small talk, even with Hallie, but he tried. “The trip between the colonies went well? Were there any problems?”

“Calm down, Vicious. The trip was great. The hotel is beautiful, by the way. Did you know they have a spa? I let Bernie and Lenny talk me into going. It was so much fun—but I think kind of expensive.” She looked sheepish. “Sorry about that.”

“I don’t care about the money, Hallie. I’ve rarely spent any of my salary these last two decades. There’s plenty for you to spend. I’m glad you’re enjoying the hotel.”

“It’s nice but it would be nicer if you were here with me.”

His heart ached. “I miss you too.”

Hallie reached out to touch the camera on her end. Her fingertips filled the upper section of his screen. He reached out and placed his fingertips against hers. It wasn’t nearly enough but it helped to imagine her warm skin under his.

“We’re leaving the day after tomorrow. I think it’s an express transport ship. We should dock with the Valiant in twenty-six hours.” She frowned. “Or, at least, I think that’s what Terror said.”

“Where is Terror?” Vicious let his fingers drop from his screen. “I tried calling his room earlier but he didn’t answer.”

“Oh, I think he went out to check the perimeter or something.” She shrugged and waved. “You know how he is. Mr. Vigilant and all that.”

“Yes.” Vicious let his gaze roam his wife. “What are you wearing?”

Hallie laughed and blushed. “Vicious, behave!”

“I can’t. You drive me crazy. I am being serious, though. Is that one of my shirts?”

She nodded and touched the fabric. “It’s the last one you wore before I left.”

“Is that where it went?” He laughed. “I dug through our hamper for ten minutes this morning trying to match up all of my uniforms to be sent to the cleaners.”

“Sorry. I just wanted to be able to smell you while I was gone.”

Heat burned through him. Only Hallie could make such a sweet gesture seem so fucking sexy.

“Take it off, Hallie.”

“What?” She looked scandalized. “Vicious, no!”

“Take it off. Let me see you.”

“You’re out of your mind. I’m not getting naked in front of this camera.”

“It’s a secure line, Hallie. Now let me see you.” He made sure to use that gruff tone that made

her shiver…
