As she is tending them, she is captured by the Spanish slaves and taken to a village several days away. She and two other slaves escape. Once she gets back to Canyon de Chelly, her family is very happy to see her. Early one winter morning the "long knives" (American soldiers Fort Defiance) came and told them they needed to leave. When they didn't leave, the solders ruined the Navaho's crops and capture them. The Navahos are taken to their new home (Fort Sumner). Along the way, they meet up with more Indians who are going to the same place. Once they get to Fort Sumner, they are told to plant crops, and the long knives give them flour for food. The next two harvests failed and they started to run out of food, so Bright Morning and her husband run back to Canyon de Chelly. The year is 1849. They are going for the gold rush and their money is stolen when they try to buy tickets. So they make a deal with a trader to hide them in 2 barrels next to 16 other barrels of potatoes. After afew days they come out and tell the captain that they are stowaways. The captain gets mad and makes them work shoveling coal, but they tell them about how someonestole their cash and is probably on the ship. They make a plan to expose him. They tell the captain and they go on with the plain. They get all the people to line up and they tell the people they have a magic pig that will squeal when a thief touches it. They turn off the lights and coat the pig with coal dust. They let all the people touch it and then turn on the lights again. They have everyone hold up their hands. The one who dosent have coal dust on their hands is the thief, so they find him and punish them.

Five months later they finally arrive in California, and they are out of money to pay for the trip to the gold fields. (It is early in the gold rush stage so there are no mines yet, just spots where people are digging). They go to a hotel and buy a room. Then they go and try to make some money. Someone tells them that miners have golddust in their hair. They start offering free hair cuts for the gold dust to pay for their trip to the fields. They get the money and go to the fields. They meet a miner who teaches them how to sift gold and how to mark a claim; eventualy they make their own claim and stirke it rich (200+ pounds of gold).

They are on their way back to California on a steamboat, but the steamboat is trying to break a steam record and it blows up. Their gold starts sinking and they will have to go home empty handed, but when they get to San Francisco, the butler's mistress, the boy's aunt, is there, so they dont have to go home afterall. They stay in California and keep on mining.

THE END.
