Larson Design Group Names New Design Engineer Jason L. Bellis, PE

Jason L. Bellis, PE has joined Larson Design Group (LDG) as a Senior Design Engineer in the Water/Wastewater Engineering Group at our branch office in Corning, New York. In this role, Mr. Bellis is responsible for project management and senior level engineering design within LDG. As a licensed engineer, he will be responsible for the programming, design, construction documents, sustainable design, personnel supervision, construction administration, agency approval, feasibility and funding analysis, and value engineering on numerous projects.

Bellis has over 11 years of experience with expertise ranging from educational, commercial, industrial, municipal, athletic, and governmental projects. He takes an active role in developing the standards for quality assurance and control while constantly looking for efficiencies within the process. He most recently served as Senior Civil Engineer/Project Manager with Tetra Tech, Inc. in their Ithaca, NY office.

“Larson Design Group has exceeded my expectations in many ways,” Bellis said. “Everyone here seems very friendly and extremely competent. I am excited about becoming part of LDG, and assimilating myself and my family into the LDG community.”

Bellis resides in Candor, NY with his wife Janie and their three children. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Bucknell University.

Larson Design Group Welcomes Project Manager Steven M. Beattie, RLA

Steven M. Beattie, RLA has recently joined Larson Design Group (LDG) as a Senior Project Manager/Landscape Architect in the Site Engineering Group at their branch office in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. In his capacity, Mr. Beattie is responsible for complete project management within LDG. As a licensed landscape architect, he will be responsible for site design, site development entitlement services, construction documents, client management, personnel supervision, and construction administration on numerous municipal, commercial, and institutional projects.

Beattie has over 13 years of experience with expertise ranging from site layout and grading; park and recreation design; streetscape/roadway design; planting plans; utility coordination; site investigation and analysis; and preparation of construction drawings and specifications. He takes an aggressive approach in maintaining a high standard for quality assurance and control while constantly looking for efficiencies throughout the design process. He most recently served as Satellite Office Manager/Senior Project Manager with Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. in their Lewisburg office.

“Larson Design Group is highly regarded in our industry and continues to expand its services and footprint,” Beattie said. “I am excited about becoming part of LDG, and being a part of its growth strategy while working with a talented and dedicated staff.”

Beattie resides in Lewisburg with his wife Christie and their two children. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from West Virginia University and an Associate of Applied Science from SUNY Cobleskill. Mr. Beattie also currently serves as the Board Chairman of the Central PA Chamber of Commerce.

Larson Design Group Appoints James T. Cullison, PE, PTOE, Senior Design Engineer

James T. Cullison, PE, PTOE has joined Larson Design Group (LDG) as a Senior Design Engineer in the Transportation Group. He will be serving clients across all LDG office locations. Jim brings a unique blend of traffic engineering skills that are possessed by few in the industry. His 17+ years of experience includes traditional transportation engineering services, travel demand forecasting, simulation, geographic information systems, research, and custom software development. He has provided traffic engineering support to many municipalities within the greater Harrisburg area and has completed numerous transportation studies for clients throughout the Commonwealth as well as Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Florida, and Texas. Jim is exceptionallly fluent in software packages for modeling work including VISSIM, VISUM, TransCAD, SimTraffic, Corsim, Cube Voyager, TP+, and Tranplan.

“I am very excited about joining LDG,” Cullison said. “I look forward to helping expand the capabilities of LDG’s Transportation Group and enhancing the engineering services offered to both private and public-sector clients.”

Cullison resides in Boiling Springs, PA with his wife and son. He graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a Master of Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He is also a licensed professional engineer in the states of Pennsylvania and Texas. He most recently served as Senior Project Engineer with Trans Associates Engineering Consultants, Inc. in their Harrisburg area office.

Larson Design Group Opens Office in Brockway, PA

Design Group’s Brockway office is located at 682 Main Street in the Ferraro Plaza.

In order to meet the growing needs of Larson Design Group’s natural gas clients, and to remain client-centered, LDG has recently established an office in Brockway, Jefferson County, PA. The location will allow us to serve existing and new clients that are developing lease holdings throughout Northern PA. The office location was specifically chosen to give us closer proximity and greater responsiveness in providing engineering and surveying support to our clients associated with well pad and pipeline development in the region.

This follows LDG’s formation of the Energy group in January, 2011. Although, LDG has been providing engineering and surveying services to the Natural Gas industry since 2008, this group was formed to specifically handle the growth in energy production within the Marcellus Shale and devote resources to meet client demands. The Energy group has experienced significant growth in staff numbers, experience and the geographical footprint in which it serves. LDG’s Brockway office reflects and supports this development.

Rubber Hits the Road on the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail

Friday, November 4th marked the official opening of the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Brook Park Station, just blocks away from the trail’s access/parking area in Lewisburg, PA. Presenters shared their appreciation, advocacy and enthusiasm regarding the important role of the rail trail and the future of their community.

The trail passes through the scenic farm country of Union County, offering beautiful views and connecting the community. Larson Design Group (LDG) performed preliminary engineering and final design for construction the nine-mile Rails to Trails facility from Lewisburg to Mifflinburg within the tight time frame demanded by funding availability.

The ten-foot wide trail is comprised of a bituminous paved surface at each end where the setting is more urban, and an aggregate surface throughout the remainder of the trail where the setting is more rural.

The project included bridge rehabilitation; utility design for water, sewer and electrical services to comfort facilities; the recording of utility easements; and securing permits from environmental agencies.

Some of the issues that needed to be addressed in design were improving the drainage, safe crossings at crossroads with the use of bollards and/or a serpentine gate system, fenced barriers, and vegetative screenings to address property owner concerns.

Mile marker posts were designed into the trail, and their GPS coordinates were established and given to the 911 emergency responders to identify the best means of access to the trail in case of a medical emergency.

Access areas are located at each end of the project, both of which includes paved parking, a comfort facility, and trail head signage with information boards. There are interpretive signs at points of interest and park benches throughout the project corridor.

“The BVRT was a success due to the comprehensive design that LDG prepared and the excellent communications that I had with Phil Hoffman and his staff planning the trail. It was a great project and the local communities and visitors to the BVRT will enjoy for many years to come,” said Kevin R. Drewencki, Executive Director for LARA.

Coordination was required with LARA, PennDOT, Union County Planning Commission, eleven utility companies, Mifflinburg and Lewisburg Boroughs, West Buffalo, Buffalo, and East Buffalo Townships, as well as the following agencies: the PUC, DCNR, DEP, and Union County Conservation District.

Larson Design Group Hosts Successful Lancaster Chamber Mixer

The Lititz branch office of Larson Design Group (LDG) recently co-hosted a successful business networking mixer, sponsored by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The monthly mixer event that the Chamber promotes is always a lively time of interaction for the local business community, and Larson Design Group was fortunate to co-host the Chamber’s November 2nd event with Westfield Insurance, the owner of the building where LDG’s Lititz, PA office is located.

Having sufficiently settled into the Lititz office location, the Mixer served as a grand opening for clients, business friends and Chamber members alike, to see the accommodating new space and the technology available to the LDG Lititz office.

The LDG Lititz office staff is benefiting from how their new space promotes teaming, collaboration and communication, as they grow their offering of services in south central Pennsylvania. Municipal engineering, site design & land development, and bridge design have been staple services for the office. Additional design services for wastewater treatment systems, transportation, and mechanical and electrical systems have the potential to grow, as well as services for compressed natural gas and other segments of the growing Marcellus Shale gas industry.

LDG Employee Receives Volunteer of the Year Award from Williamsport YWCA

Larson Design Group’s Lawrence Lee Huber, AIA, NCARB, CSI, Project Manager – Brand Architecture, has been honored with the Blanche Smink Volunteer of the Year Award from the Williamsport YWCA.

Huber played a critical role in the YWCA’s recent renovations and energy efficiency initiatives which included a solar hot water system, improved gymnasium lighting, additional insulation, and highly efficient windows and doors. Learn more about the Williamsport YWCA’s Solar Energy Project.

“It is a great honor for me to be recognized by such an organization as the YWCA who has so many volunteers dedicating many hours to the furtherance of the values and mission of the YWCA. I wish to say thank you for the recognition. I believe in their mission and look forward to many more years working with the YWCA and using my Architectural talents on their behalf,” said Huber.

Blanche Smink (1907-1993) was a YWCA volunteer for over fifty years. She was the President of the agency several times and served on the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee. She was an avid fundraiser, and ran the YWCA Trip Program. Blanche’s lifelong commitment to the YWCA helped the agency stand firm, even in the most difficult times. Nominations are being sought for this award to honor current YWCA volunteers whom demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to our Mission.

Local CNG Project Initiates Sponsorship Campaign

On Friday, September 30, River Valley Transit (RVT), in collaboration with the CNG Focus Group, hosted the kick-off to their RVT CNG Project Sponsorship Program, “Let’s Build a CNG Station,” at the Genetti Hotel in conjunction with T. Boone Pickens’ visit to Williamsport. The theme of the day was consistent: US energy independence and the utilization of our American natural gas resources for transportation. Energy In Depth and ANGA (America’s Natural Gas Alliance) also provided information at the day’s events.

According to Pickens, domestically produced natural gas can fuel a second industrial revolution that can revitalize our nation’s economy. Williamsport, as the seventh fastest growing metropolitan area in the US*, is experiencing this revitalization in terms of economic development and job creation because of the Marcellus Shale Play.

“Using compressed natural gas (CNG) to fuel city buses – and building a CNG fueling station in downtown Williamsport – symbolizes the benefits of natural gas production in our region. They are part of the process of using natural gas from the Marcellus Shale to reduce people’s heating costs and electricity rates, to attract new industries, and to enhance our area’s appeal as a great place to live, work, and invest” Dr. Arthur Sterngold, Professor of Business, Lycoming College.

“Let’s Build a CNG Station” sponsorship program reaches out to the natural gas industry with an opportunity for them to showcase their commitment to the community, and help provide the infrastructure necessary to move towards US energy independence. This includes industry sponsors and fueling partners – fleets that want to convert to CNG and need a place to fuel. RVT intends to build a CNG fueling station and convert its own bus fleet to CNG over the next decade. With additional sponsorship from the natural gas industry and community, RVT will be able to build a larger station to accommodate more CNG demand.

Larson Design Group Marketing Receives SMPS MCA Award

Larson Design Group’s marketing efforts were recently recognized by the Society of Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) at the 2011 Marketing Communications (MCA) Awards, held August 24-26 at the Build Business conference in Chicago.

Larson Design Group placed first as the only firm to win in the category for Target Marketing for a brochure targeted to midstream services within the natural gas industry. The brochure’s unique design has fit into communicating multiple applications including brand architecture.

“Smart firms must cut through the clutter, bringing clarity to their firm’s story through simple, effective design,” noted Amanda Dalla Piazza, Marketing Manager. “Our recognition was the culmination of ideas in [our] department, molding textual and visual communication into a useful piece that has true longevity.”

Larson Design Group Creates Facilities Engineering Group

Larson Design Group has recently created a Facilities Engineering group comprising of structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering, to better meet client demands.

The group will focus on providing services to academic, commercial, industrial, and retail clients, as well as partnering with architectural firms. The creation of the group will help LDG’s building engineering disciplines create specialized teams for projects within the markets it serves.

As part of this new group, Gregory J. Moser, P.E., formerly a Project Manager, will oversee the group as Director.

“The creation of the Facilities Engineering group is a natural progression of our strategic plan for growth as a firm,” said Paul H. Lee, Chief Operating Officer. “We continue to apply our core values and deliver on the vision of collaboration and creating additional value for our clients.”

Most members of the group have been with LDG over 5 years and have previously collaborated together on multiple projects, including industrial processing and equipment, security systems and telecommunications, water/wastewater systems, and sustainable design applications.

LDG Forms Partnership in Investment of TerrAqua Resource Management

Larson Design Group (LDG) recently formed a partnership with Newalta, a Calgary, Alberta-based company that specializes in product recovery and environmental services, to grow TerrAqua Resource Management, LDG’s subsidiary company that provides water treatment solutions to flowback and produced waters from Marcellus Shale development.

Through Newalta’s U.S. subsidiary, Newalta Environmental Services, Inc., the partnership will invest in the development and construction of additional TARM facilities to meet expanded development needs of the industry.

“Newalta’s expertise in operation of waste treatment, disposal, and recovery facilities will be a valuable asset to TARM and help improve efficiencies and enhance the environmental health and safety of facilities as TARM continues to grow,” explained Keith Kuzio, LDG President/CEO. “In addition, Newalta’s focus on employees, the community, and environment are all in line with [our] core values and vision for the growth for TARM.”

TARM’s highly-compliant recycle/reuse facility treats flowback and produced waters from Marcellus Shale Development and allows clients to recycle nearly all of their generated water. Operations such as TARM extend benefits of high compliance and sustainability within Marcellus Shale development.

Larson Design Group Participates in Lycoming County United Way Campaign Marketing

On July 8th, Larson Design Group (LDG) employees participated in the Lycoming County United Way’s (LCUW) upcoming campaign marketing by volunteering for a photo opportunity that will be used in program materials.

Since 1993, LDG has supported local United Way campaigns in which its employees work and live through an annual company-wide employee campaign and corporate giving. Through these initiatives, LDG has raised funds totaling over $250,000, and employees have served in volunteer positions such as Loaned Executives or Campaign Cabinet Division Leaders.

TARM Selected for Innovation Expo

In April 2010, TARM began operations at its processing facility at Water Tower Square in Williamsport.

TerrAqua Resource Management (TARM) has been selected to present at the Innovation Expo during the Shale Gas Insight 2011 Conference on September 7 and 8 in Philadelphia. TARM’s selection was the result of a joint evaluation by the Ben Franklin Technology Partners and Marcellus Shale Coalition.

“This recognition of TARM’s high-compliance methods is especially important because the selection process placed value on innovation and enterprise development,” said Quay Schappell, Chief Operations Officer for TARM. “Marcellus development is a highly regulated market sector that is improving through collaboration and innovative solutions. TARM worked diligently with its clients to develop a service solution that succeeds in the marketplace. LDG Expands Environmental Services to Serve Energy Clients

In January, Larson Design Group developed a group to specifically handle the growth in energy production within the Marcellus Shale and devote resources to meet client demands. This group has since expanded its environmental service offerings to further meet the development needs within the Marcellus, including wetlands, stream and habitat identification and restoration, permitting, and associated environmental reviews and permitting for well pad, pipeline, and access road construction.

“LDG realizes the unique environmental challenges within the development of each drilling site and related transmission network,” said Britton Burnworth, Environmental Scientist. “Our goal is to work together with oil and gas operators to avoid potential encroachments and help protect Pennsylvania’s ecological resources. With our additional environmental staff, LDG’s energy group can follow a design for a well pad or pipeline network from start to finish, as one integrated team.”

In addition to Mr. Burnworth, Larson Design Group’s environmental staff within the energy group include Brent Herman, Eric Kells, and Joshua Glace. Each staff member is experienced in site reviews for well pad and pipeline feasibility, wetland and stream delineations, habitat identification and monitoring, and working closely between onsite landowners and governmental agencies.

“To prepare for the design and construction of natural gas lines and well pads, we’ll walk several miles of state forest and private property to ensure wetlands and streams are minimally impacted and that minimal disturbance would take place during the design process,” explained Brent Herman. “We monitor any endangered species to make sure they are not harmed during a construction project.”

Larson Design Group is a member of ISNetworld, a resource that connects oil and gas clients with consultants and contractors that meet specific industry requirements.

The group has also played a role in providing solutions that support other forms of energy generated from natural gas drilling, including Compressed Natural Gas, or CNG. Currently, LDG is undertaking a feasibility study to design a CNG fueling station for River Valley Transit in the City of Williamsport. Plans for a CNG Station in Williamsport

Wheels are in motion for a public access Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling station at River Valley Transit (RVT) at its 1500 West Third Street location. Last week, RVT hosted the CNG Focus Group meeting and announced its commitment to the project. RVT plans to add CNG to its diesel and gasoline fueling options and be online by May 2012. This year, they plan to purchase their first CNG bus, with plans to transition the fleet of 30 transit buses to CNG over 10 years. Besides RVT, this site serves as the multi-municipal fueling depot for Lycoming County, City of Williamsport, and surrounding non-profit organizations.

RVT’s Planning Manager, Kevin Kilpatrick, shows the group the site of the planned CNG fueling station.

“This project makes sense for RVT, the City of Williamsport, Lycoming County, and the community-at-large,” said Bill Nichols, General Manager, RVT. “The RVT CNG Project is fiscally, environmentally, and socially responsible. It is the role of government to build infrastructure; which offers opportunity to private industry.”

RVT will develop fueling partnerships with municipalities and other local fleets and intends to seek a private partner to operate the retail aspect of CNG fueling for general consumers.

At the project kick-off meeting, project design, schedule, project budget, and CNG’s cost savings over diesel fuel were discussed. Following the discussion, the group went outside to visualize the project in the field. Interested stakeholders, project supporters, and city, county, state and federal government officials were in attendance and toured RVT’s facility; many wrote letters of support for inclusion in RVT’s AFIG (Alternative Fuel Incentive Grant) application to DEP’s Office of Energy and Technology Deployment. The AFIG program goal is to reduce the commonwealth’s dependence on imported oil as well as to improve air quality by reducing vehicle emissions. It fosters economic development in the commonwealth by encouraging innovative technology deployment and the use of alternative fuels, including CNG.
Aron Lantz, Larson Design Group, said, “This project is a really good fit for what DEP’s AFIG program is all about: deploying infrastructure in alternative fuels, fostering collaboration on a multi-municipal basis, opening up market development for CNG fueling by allowing the general public, including individuals and businesses the opportunity to use CNG; thus unlocking the market for CNG and spurring private investment in CNG vehicles and eventually more fueling stations once private demand in the region begins to ramp up.”

Mark Murawski, Transportation Planner, presented the position of the County on CNG Fueling at RVT and said, “The RVT CNG Project will be the hallmark in the Lycoming County Energy Plan.”

Gus Genetti, President of Genetti Hotel & Suites, plans to purchase new CNG company vehicles for his hotel and fuel at the CNG vehicle fueling station at the RVT depot. Genetti is a sincere advocate for natural gas fueling and has spent more than $12,000 for billboards supporting the cause. He believes natural gas is a smart, proud, and patriotic alternative to foreign oil.

The CNG Focus Group was created at Larson Design Group in Spring 2011 as a response to market direction in natural gas utilization. Larson Design Group CFO Honored as One of Local YWCA’s “Women of Excellence”

LDG CFO Brenda Nichols was one of 13 women honored at the YWCA of Northcentral PA’s Women of Excellence dinner on May 19th, 2011.

Larson Design Group’s (LDG) Senior Vice President/Chief Financial Officer Brenda Nichols was one of 13 women honored by the YWCA of Northcentral PA’s 3rd Annual Tribute to Women of Excellence. The group is chosen based on their contributions to the community, compassion, and exemplary character.

An annual dinner in celebration of the Women of Excellence was held on May 19th in Williamsport.

“What a wonderful community we live in that has so many women committed to helping others,” Nichols commented. “I’m so humbled to be recognized among all these great women.”

Nichols, who has been with LDG for over 18 years, has many charitable affiliations including Leadership Lycoming, Lycoming United Way, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life among others. But most of her time is donated to Williamsport’s Community Theatre League, where she can “appreciate other talents and gifts while helping on the business side of things.” She is currently the treasurer of the Community Theatre League while serving on the Board and Executive Committee.

“It is an honor for the YWCA Northcentral Pennsylvania to celebrate so many exceptional women,” said Meg Finn, YWCA Development and Communications Director. “It is an evening of inspiration and a tremendous opportunity to give thanks to local heroines.”

Larson Design Group Finalist in Project Excellence Award Program

Larson Design Group placed as a finalist for Deltek Vision’s 2011 annual Project Excellence Awards program. These awards recognize Deltek software’s customer and partner successes that improve business processes and performance to win new business and increase profitability.

Larson Design Group placed within the Innovation category, which recognizes a customer “that best demonstrates its use of Deltek software in new and innovative ways to drive real value within the organization.” International Resources Group, an L-3 Company, also placed as a finalist.

Larson Design Group’s submission for award consideration included the creation of custom tools used within Deltek Vision® to track processes such as workload, proposal go/no go decisions, client satisfaction, employee training, and HR information.

“[We] had many various spreadsheets and databases used by various departments to track information,” said Jeff Cunningham, Director of IT. “And there were some duplicate efforts with not everyone knowing what the other department was tracking. We believed there was significant time being spent to capture information and inefficient ways to present results. The innovations we’ve created utilizing Vision have saved time and provided staff a clearer picture into our business processes.”

Larson Design Group President and CEO, Keith Kuzio, will join other members of the Williamsport community to discuss the impact of Marcellus Shale development on the local area in an upcoming live TV program, “State of Pennsylvania: Boomtown Williamsport.”

Larson Design Group Hosts Education Day on Compressed Natural Gas

On Wednesday, April 6, Larson Design Group hosted an education day at their corporate headquarters in Williamsport to focus community stakeholders on potential for development of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling stations, fleet conversions, and infrastructure across central and northern tier Pennsylvania.

The event, attended by local fleet managers, utilities, and government entities, featured presentations by Patrick Henderson, Energy Executive of the Tom Corbett Administration; Tony Bandiero, Greater Philadelphia Clean Cities; David Ross, EQT, Clean American Transportation Alliance (CATA – Transportation Collaborative); Michael German, Corning Natural Gas; Stephe Yborra, NGVAmerica and the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation; Graham Barker, GLB International; Vince Matteo, Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce; Eric Bernier, Centre Area Transit Authority; and Mike Narcavage, Chesapeake Energy.

“[We’ve] sure landed on a topic of significant interest,” said Keith Kuzio, Larson Design Group’s CEO as the day kicked off. Kuzio related that the firm’s core values of community stewardship, learning, and revitalizing the community and economy were reflected in the sharing of information on CNG.

The event covered topics including cost of purchasing natural gas powered vehicles (NGVs); building fueling stations and calculating payback; grants and incentives for CNG; creating pipeline infrastructure utilizing Marcellus Shale gas to foster the local economy and create jobs; running public transportation using CNG; and building American energy independence.

“Marcellus Shale is critical to our economic future and I believe CNG is an important part in the effort to bring family sustaining jobs to Pennsylvania,” said Vince Matteo, President/CEO of the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce.

Stephe Yborra presented the keynote address on Essential Knowledge about CNG Economics, Vehicles and Infrastructure.

“There’s a growing public awareness about America’s energy security and environmental sustainability, which is heightening the interest in natural gas vehicles,” Yborra said. “With more car and truck manufacturers offering a variety of NGVs, we anticipate there will be major growth in this market over the next decade.”

The CNG Education Day’s date coincided with the introduction of legislation that offers implementation of natural gas vehicles (NGVs) and infrastructure across the state and nation. On April 6, state Representative Stan Saylor introduced Marcellus Works in Harrisburg, which creates tax credits and incentives for fleet vehicles and encourages the construction of fueling stations across major travel corridors including the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Recently, President Obama urged legislators to support and pass legislation on the Natural Gas Act, which would provide incentives for purchasing NGVs, installing fueling stations and manufacturing natural gas vehicles in America. The NAT GAS Act of 2011 was also introduced in Congress on April 6.

Patrick Henderson, Energy Executive of the Tom Corbett Administration, related the Administration’s importance of serving as a liaison between state agencies and community groups.

“We’re here to make sure that state agencies are collaborating to help advance a cohesive state energy policy,” he said. “We want to be sure that businesses, as well as environmental and conservation groups, have their voices heard, so that we can create the best energy policy for Pennsylvania.”

Compared to gasoline, CNG offers numerous environmental, sustainable, and economic benefits. Vehicles running on CNG can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20-30%, carbon monoxide emissions by 70-90%, and reduce particulate emissions by up to 90%*. CNG vehicles also produce up to 22-29% less greenhouse gases compared to diesel and gasoline vehicles, respectively**.

For fleets running repetitive, localized trips, utilizing CNG vehicles can provide a shorter payback than many realize and even recoup purchase costs for additional vehicles. While CNG vehicles cost more to purchase, federal grants can reduce the burden. Added with the lower costs of natural gas compared to its gasoline or diesel energy equivalent, fleets such as solid waste management, entities that utilize box trucks, and transit buses can see CNG paybacks in as little as a year to a few years, depending on the level of usage and maintenance costs.

“Most of the total domestic consumption of natural gas in the U.S. is met by U.S. production, and locally, the Marcellus Shale play is contributing to Pennsylvania’s growing supply. CNG offers an alternative to crude oil which can lead to American energy independence, while building environmental sustainability and local job creation,” said Aron Lantz, Larson Design Group’s Innovation Engineer.

While interest in CNG is growing, Lantz said, the issue is building crucial infrastructure, including fueling stations, to meet demand of new CNG fleets. Eventually, the economic benefits and transportation network will become available to the average consumer. (While there currently are CNG vehicles available to consumers, they are more expensive, and payback take longer based on average use. And without the creation of public fueling stations, normal transportation ranges wouldn’t be available.)

“The next step,” he explained, “is identifying the logical places for fleet fueling stations in our local area and expanding that network over time. For fleets and business owners that have the interest and desire to build or own stations, there are current and potentially new federal incentives out there, as well as a similar interest from other stakeholders in the community. Our objective is to get everyone working together to accomplish the goal of building CNG fueling stations.”

The mission of the CNG Focus Group is to foster learning, collaboration, and action on CNG vehicle fueling and infrastructure on an ongoing basis as it relates to the Marcellus Shale in the North Central Pennsylvania region. The focus group plans to continue building membership and interest in creating CNG fueling locations and building infrastructure.

“Fueling a transportation network with CNG won’t happen overnight,” Lantz said, “but we need to take the crucial first steps to adopting this technology that can benefit the region, the state, and the nation economically by using locally produced natural gas, and environmentally by using a cleaner burning fuel.”

Larson Design Group’s TerrAqua Resource Management Receives National Recognition Award in Washington, DC

On April 1, Larson Design Group received a National Recognition Award through the American Consulting Engineers Council (ACEC) and American Consulting Engineers Council of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) for design and development of TerrAqua Resource Management (TARM), Pennsylvania’s first enterprise for water recycling from Marcellus Shale development.

TARM representatives Marty Muggleton and Quay Schappell joined LDG President and CEO, Keith Kuzio, as LDG accepted the award at the Hyatt Hotel in Washington, DC.

“Larson Design Group was last recognized at this level in 2004, so this is a rare and rewarding experience for our firm,” said Marty Muggleton, Vice President. “It is unique because TARM is a design and an enterprise. That combination is uncommon in ACEC’s competition. ACEC’s recognition strengthens TARM’s position in the market by validating that recycling is the high compliance objective and a major step towards sustainable development of the Marcellus. TARM’s growth will allow for more and more water to be recycled and that is good for the industry and our region.”

TARM’s highly-compliant recycle/reuse facility treats flowback and produced waters from Marcellus Shale Development and allows clients to recycle nearly all of their generated water. Since its operations commenced about a year ago, TARM has allowed its clients to recycle and reuse more than 41 million gallons of water generated from Marcellus development.

Operations such as TARM extend benefits of high compliance and sustainability within Marcellus Shale development through reuse of water resources; reducing carbon footprint and impacts on local roadways by fewer truck trips; reducing air quality impacts; reducing traffic congestion; and improving roadway safety.

Through additional developments, TARM will further enhance its ability to recycle water for clients in more remote areas that lack typical infrastructure.

Each year, ACEC recognizes member firms that contribute to better quality of life in America and across the globe through the Engineering Excellence Awards. Larson Design Group Blog offers Industry and Geographical Insight

Today’s technology and Social Media (SoMe) have changed how people communicate. Smart phones and tablet computers allow portability and access nearly anywhere to computing, bringing a more personal, conversational approach to information sharing. SoMe tools allow information to be shared to a wider audience, keeping a conversation going or expanding in a new direction.

Blogging, once thought of as only an outlet for individuals to share personal details, has grown into one of the largest ways professionals share ideas and expertise. In redefining its web presence less than a year ago, Larson Design Group created LDGBLOG (www.ldgblog.com) to provide a platform for employees to share their knowledge conversationally. Posts have been shared through Larson Design Group’s e-newsletter (LDGNEWS), Facebook, and Twitter networks to garner additional readership and exposure. In less than 8 months, LDG has shared its posts with nearly 2,000 followers and e-newsletter readers.

The blog features authors from across the company, including not just technical staff but information technology, client development, marketing, and executive management.

Topics on the blog have ranged from natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale, to client service, retail architecture, alternative energy, corporate culture, and municipal services. Each post serves as the opportunity to provide insight from an insider’s perspective.

“We’re sharing our experiences relevant to both our industry and our geography,” explained Keith Kuzio, CEO. “By providing insights on topics that have meaning right now, we can strengthen the relationship with our audience through collaboration and listening that brings a deeper understanding together.”

In “Conversations from the Region,” Vice President Marty Muggleton shares thoughts on the impact of living and working within the Marcellus Shale play, including “What Supports Life(styles)”:

“A project that deals with water leads to challenge and controversy the same way an energy project does. Deal with them simultaneously and the challenge and controversy grow exponentially. So where does one start? I recommend the start is with you, your life, and the American lifestyle…”

On the topic of regulating alternative energies in municipal planning, Senior Design Engineer Jim Fisher, P.E. writes about the importance of defining onsite and offsite uses for energy sources such as solar, wind, and outdoor wood-fired boilers “(Alternative Energy from a Municipal Regulatory Perspective):”

“Alternative energy has become a hot topic in recent years. And as the economy continues to improve, and the world’s population continues to grow, energy demands will continue to increase. Combine this with technological and economical breakthroughs; there is every reason to believe that alternative energy will continue to be a hot topic. For a lot of municipalities, this has been a “hot topic of necessity” – i.e., someone comes in and proposes to place 5 windmills on top of his house but there are no ordinances which cover this scenario (this is actually a real-world example!).”

On Tuesday March 9, the photography team at BRT Photo (Brian Tolbert, owner, Lancaster, PA) visited Larson Design Group (LDG) to shoot a photography collective of staff who perform services in key markets, including brand architecture, energy conservation, and 3D visualization.

The photography collection, part of an ongoing initiative that will feature another date in April to further capture other staff and services, will serve to enhance the firm’s message through visual communication in upcoming events and core brand materials.

Larson Design Group (LDG) has won the ACEC/PA Diamond Honor Award for Engineering Excellence for design and development of TerrAqua Resource Management (TARM), Pennsylvania’s first enterprise for water recycling from Marcellus Shale development. TARM representatives Marty Muggleton and Quay Schappell joined LDG President and CEO, Keith Kuzio, as LDG accepted the award at the ACEC Diamond Awards gala on February 3 at the Hotel Hershey.

“LDG’s strategic commitment to innovation is the hidden element in this successful project,” stated Quay Schappell, Chief Operating Officer of TARM. “[Our] clients, including the gas industry, know LDG delivers quality designs. Coupled with design, LDG’s innovation allowed TARM to develop a service and enterprise that didn’t exist previously. In 2008, gas exploration firms (GEFs) commenced drilling programs in north central Pennsylvania, with multi-year, accelerated programs. The unrealized challenge facing GEFs was water resources, namely, what to do with waters generated by these drilling programs.

TARM developed a highly-compliant recycle/reuse facility that treats flowback and produced waters from Marcellus Shale Development. The solution allows clients to recycle nearly all of their generated water. The system is non-proprietary and may be replicated by other enterprises, integrated into client water management networks, and used in other unconventional gas shale plays. TARM is the recipient of the first permit issued for Residual Waste – Beneficial Reuse issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Waste Management. This successful business model for treating and recycling produced and flowback water from Marcellus development reinforces the message that high compliance and sustainability are important objectives for Marcellus Development. TARM has allowed its clients to recycle and reuse more than 34 million gallons of water generated from Marcellus development.

Larson Design Group Develops Energy Group to Meet Growing Trends

Recently, Larson Design Group (LDG) developed a group to specifically handle the growth in energy production within the Marcellus Shale and devote resources to meet client demands.

“The creation of the Energy group will allow us to concentrate knowledge leaders in work related to the Marcellus Shale, while gaining and applying technical knowledge that can help us provide new solutions that add value to our clients in this expanding market,” said Karl F. Matz, P.E., Director of LDG’s Energy Group.

As exploration and production expands in the Marcellus, so does the need for solutions that harness opportunities garnered by Marcellus well development and mid-stream services. The creation of the Energy group will increase LDG’s effectiveness in supporting development in both Marcellus and other natural gas formations while gaining knowledge in pipeline development.

“The firm’s expertise strengthens our professional network with industry leaders,” mentioned Martin J. 2011 LDG Internship Program Kicks-Off January 7

Beginning January 7, Larson Design Group will again open its summer internship program. The program, in place for well over a decade, includes internships in the fields of structural, highway, and civil engineering; construction inspection; architecture; accounting; information technology; human resources; and marketing.

“Internships are an integral part of real-world experiences that are crucial to students making the most successful career choices,” explained William R. Phillips, SPHR, Director of Human Resources. “Our internship program provides unique mentoring opportunities by our employees with students from all over the country while enhancing those students’ educations.”

This past year, LDG hosted 7 interns. Through growth, many interns become job co-ops that contribute to the company beyond the summer, such as co-op Katie Endresen (Retail Architecture). Through these unique opportunities, interns/co-ops agreed that these experiences have exceeded their expectations.

“Since I started my internship back in 2006, I would say that it turned out better than I imagined,” she said. “I can honestly say that almost all of my coworkers have been mentors to me this past year and in past years. I have made significant relationships during my time as an intern and have seen vast personal growth from my experiences here.”

Interns have seen an array of opportunities to hone their skills with real-world applications.

“My favorite experiences this year have been traveling to survey stores,” said Brent Dressler, also a co-op in Retail Architecture. “Not only have I been able to learn new things and gain some new skills, but I was able to see some new towns and cities along the way.”

These opportunities allow our interns to confirm their career choices.

“I have been able to see many different aspects of the accounting process and given many responsibilities,” mentioned Adam Starr, co-op in Accounting. “After graduating from college, I plan to find a job in the accounting industry. This internship reassured me that the accounting profession was right for me.”

TurnKey Construction, Inc. and Larson Design Group Team Receives Excellence in Construction Merit Award

Construction gets underway. The Dominion offices are a conventional steel frame building but made of steel with a high recycled content.

The team of TurnKey Construction, Inc. and Larson Design Group (LDG) recently received an Excellence in Construction Merit Award for their contribution to the new office building for Dominion Transmission, located in Sabinsville, PA. The project was awarded “Best Commercial Project” by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Central Pennsylvania Chapter.

This year’s awards program showcased 10 entries, all judged upon specific criteria relating to the quality of construction and workmanship by a panel of design professionals and members of the construction industry. Projects were judged on execution of design, craftsmanship, safety, attention to detail, proper installation, evidence of extraordinary effort, owner satisfaction, and other considerations.

Dominion’s new office facility features numerous energy saving measures that enhance productivity while lessening its environmental impact.

The 12,000 square foot building includes materials such as high efficiency doors and windows, energy efficient lighting, and low VOC/recycled construction materials. Cellulose insulation, made from recycled newspaper, increases its energy efficiency. Low flow water fixtures lower the building’s water use by 30% over a standard office building. Landscaping used native plants, including mountain laurel, rhododendron, and boxwood that exclude the need for permanent irrigation. A retaining pond near the building site collects stormwater sediment from the land and parking lot. The pond filters impurities and supplies filtered water to an adjacent stream while recharging water into the ground. Natural daylighting provides an aesthetic comfort on the inside, while recycled stone veneer and siding beautify the exterior. Occupancy sensors monitor heating and lighting to augment productivity through “smart” technology. The facility’s site design features water efficient landscaping and stormwater management.

Dominion is highly committed to sustainable practices. 91% of the construction waste for the building project was diverted from the landfill and recycled for other uses; a very high percentage for a rural site. The parking lot even includes specially designated spaces near the front of the building for hybrid vehicles.

This building design exceeded the client’s initial expectations and achieved LEED® Gold Certification. LEED is an internationally-recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Studies have shown that LEED buildings decrease turnover and absenteeism, while enhancing productivity by creating a healthier workplace. LEED is a registered trademark of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Larson Design Group Names New Project Engineer and GIS Designer

Sydney R. Lytle begins GIS work for LDG clients.

Larson Design Group (LDG) is pleased to announce two recent additions to its multi-disciplined staff.

Matthew J. Nealis, PE, LEED AP, has joined LDG as a Project Engineer in the Building Systems Group at their headquarters in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. In this role, Nealis is involved with proposals, mechanical design of construction documents, sustainable design, and value engineering.

Nealis comes to LDG with 8 years of experience in Department of Defense contracts ranging from healthcare to education. He most recently served as HVAC Mechanical Engineer with Rogers, Lovelock & Fritz, Inc. in Winter Park, Florida.

Nealis relocated to Williamsport with his wife Robyn and daughter Claire. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cedarville University and is a registered professional engineer in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Florida.

“The people at LDG have been very welcoming and have exceeded my expectations,” said Nealis. “I am very appreciative of the family atmosphere of LDG, and everyone has been very helpful.”

Sydney R. Lytle has joined LDG as a Designer in their Williamsport office. She is responsible for designing well pads for natural gas clients and maintaining a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database of all the gas data that LDG creates, which includes formatting data from AutoCAD into a GIS format for LDG clients.

She has experience with ArcGIS desktop, ERDAS Imagine, ArcPad/GPS Development, and Terrain Navigator Pro. Her lab and field skills include collecting geology field data and mapping, basic structural geological techniques, map and air photo interpretation, stream discharge and HACK testing, and wetland delineation.

“I enjoy all of the employees’ willingness to help each other out and work as a team,” said Lytle. “I hope that I can make a good fit and add to what makes LDG a great company.”

Lytle resides in Wellsboro and graduated from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Geography.

Zartman Construction and Larson Design Group Team Receives Excellence in Construction Merit Award

The new bookstore makes use of a historic building in downtown Lewisburg.

The team of Zartman Construction and Larson Design Group (LDG) recently received an Excellence in Construction Merit Award for their work with the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. The project was awarded “Best Restoration/Renovation Project” by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Central Pennsylvania Chapter.

LDG was originally retained by an electrical contractor to provide professional review and sealing of electrical drawings for the rehabilitation of an existing building into the new bookstore. Final lighting fixture layout, based on LDG’s photometric analysis, will provide efficient and comfortable lighting levels compliant with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America recommendations.

The winning project required extensive coordination with several parties, including Bucknell University; Barnes & Noble; Zartman Construction, the electrical and mechanical contractors; and the lighting vendor to finalize the lighting and design revisions.

Larson Design Group Employee to Appear on The History Channel

Beam’s 1988 Isuzu Trooper features a wood gasification system which allows it to run free of conventional gasoline.

Robert “Chip” Beam, CADD Specialist at Larson Design Group and developer of a wood powered car, will appear on The History Channel’s “Apocalypse PA” Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 10 p.m. EST. The November 16 premiere of the cable reality series features Pennsylvania residents who are preparing for “The Apocalypse” and follows a Bethlehem man (Frank Belcastro) who teaches his family self-reliance by making things by hand instead of using modern conveniences. Beam is called upon by Belcastro to understand the basics of the wood powered car.

Weeks ago Beam’s two-door 1989 Mercury Cougar established a world land speed record for a wood powered vehicle at the World of Speed 2010 event in Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. The Cougar is completely powered by burning wood pellets manufactured from timber debris.

The record-breaking sedan is not Beam’s first vehicle to run on wood as its energy source. In 2005 Beam added a wood gasification system to his 1988 Isuzu Trooper after he became concerned by conventional fuel availability following Hurricane Katrina. Beam began research that led to the creation of his unique energy system. He founded in 2006 the New York-based company Beaver Energy, which researches and develops different types of energy from organic solutions.

“For us it was about using a waste product; it was about waste reuse, using wood as a fuel is ‘found energy’,” explains Beam. “Any organic material can be pelletized. Grass, leaves, and crop residue can make good fuels; they make good material to run through a pellet machine. There is no need to dry at all because the pellet machine reduces moisture to an adequate level. Anyone can create fuel with a pellet machine and organic waste products.”

Larson Design Group Visits Duboistown Bridge Construction Site

Construction begins on the Duboistown Bridge.

A large group from the Larson Design Group (LDG) bridge structures department visited the Duboistown Bridge construction site on October 19, 2010 to get a closer look at the construction processes for a major river crossing. Tim Crotty, owner of Susquehanna Supply Company who is contracted to complete the new structure, gave LDG a tour of the construction site.

Larson Design Group partnered with Gannett Fleming on the project, which includes the construction of a replacement bridge along Arch Street, upstream of the existing bridge. The proposed 12-span bridge will feature a barrier separated sidewalk and will take three years to complete.

“The tour was beneficial for everyone that attended,” said Kurt Brungard, PE, LDG Project Manager-Bridge Engineering. “The group was able to view up-close the work and effort required to complete deep footing excavations for a large river project. The experience will only benefit our engineers when they design similar projects.”

The engineers were able to view the start of the pier construction and piling driving, as well as the structural design of the pier cells that allow the workers to work 20′ below the water surface to construct the pier footings. Mr. Crotty estimates the first beams will be set in late spring to early summer on the Williamsport side.

LDG’s responsibilities included the creation of electronic information and designs of stormwater management and drainage, lighting design, right-of-way services, and survey support.

United Way Campaign a Way to Share Commitment to Community

Volunteers get messy during a pie throwing contest to help support the United Way.

In early October, Larson Design Group began its annual United Way campaign. Since 1993, the firm and its employees have donated over $250,000 toward programs integral to protecting and nurturing the communities in which our employees live.

“LDG strongly supports the United Way through an annual company-wide employee campaign and corporate giving. The United Way’s mission of helping those in need and their accountable approach to distributing funds is very well aligned with our core value of community stewardship,” explained Keith S. Kuzio, PE, Chief Executive Officer. “Our employees respond very generously each year with financial contributions as well as through service in vital volunteer positions such as Loaned Executives or Campaign Cabinet Division Leaders. By sharing generously with time, talents, and treasure, LDG employees demonstrate their appreciation for the many successful relationships that we have in the communities where we work, live, and perform our services. The United Way is just one of many charitable organizations that we seek to help.”

The company’s past campaigns have included events to raise additional funds, such as a popular pie-throwing contest. This year’s campaign, which runs until the end of October, is well over half its goal.

“Help build a ramp to a camp club house so a handicapped child can enter on their own with a smile, build a raised garden so the elderly can still tend to their favorite vegetables or flowers, rebuild a porch swing, fresh wall paint, clean inside and outside of the adult care house or sanitize toys in a day care. This is what you can do to help,” said Richard Palmer, Senior Project Designer and long-time giver to the United Way. “The most rewarding [for me] was the porch swing and cleaning of an adult home. These people were very concerned that we were not going to get their house back together right. So we asked them to help! They loved it; they were part of the cleaning crew. There was one individual that had lost his father and would not come out of his room or even talk to us, but when we said we needed his help clean his room a huge smile came across his face and he jumped right in! When we had finished his room, he offered one of his hats to the person he took a liking to. The caregiver said he never let anyone touch his hats!”

Mr. Bradley Hill, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, has recently joined LDG as an Architect in the Building Systems Group at their headquarters in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. In his capacity, Mr. Hill is responsible for complete project management within LDG. As a licensed architect, he will be responsible for the programming, design, construction documents, sustainable design, personnel supervision, construction administration, and value engineering on numerous projects.

He takes an active role in developing the standards for quality assurance and control while constantly looking for efficiencies within the process. Mr. Hill has relocated to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with his wife Julie and their two children. He holds a Master of Architecture from SUNY at Buffalo, a Bachelor of Arts from SUNY Fredonia, and an Associate of Arts from Jamestown Community College.

John Belyea, PE, reviews drawings from LDG’s Corning, NY office as he begins his role as Project Engineer.

John Belyea, PE, has recently joined LDG as a Project Engineer in their Corning, NY office. He is responsible for the design and production of residential, commercial, and industrial site development projects, which includes the base horizontal and vertical layout of project sites, drainage calculations, utility capacity analysis, coordination and connections, highway/floodplain/drainage permitting, environmental clearance documentation, subcontractor coordination, and municipality application preparation.

“I am very excited about joining LDG,” he said. ” I look forward to learning from my coworkers and growing as an engineer, and am pleased to be in one of the most picturesque environments in the Northeast.”

He has 12 years experience with expertise in site investigations, land development, wastewater treatment facilities, analytical laboratory oversight and data analysis, engineering modeling, technical report writing, permit development, project cost estimation, financial oversight, and status reporting.
Mr. Belyea resides on Keuka Lake north of Hammondsport, NY. He graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering. He is a licensed engineer in New York and Florida.

Larson Design Group Presents Riverwalk Class in Partnership with Susquehanna Greenway

Environmental signage displays along the Riverwalk provide information on the rich history of the region.

On Wednesday, October 13, 2010, Larson Design Group Project Manager Phil Hoffman and Director of Construction Inspection Duane Daniels presented to Bucknell University Environmental Studies students on the Susquehanna Riverwalk, as part of the “Bucknell Semester on the Susquehanna” class.

The class, held in partnership with the Susquehanna Greenway, included presentations from Lycoming County and the Susquehanna Greenway and was held at Larson Design Group’s headquarters office in Williamsport, next to the Riverwalk.

“The Riverwalk gives the levee system multiple purposes, of not only protecting our community from flooding, but now giving us access to the scenic Susquehanna River, a safe place to walk and bike for exercise, an alternative means of transportation to and from local destinations, and a cultural, historic, and natural connection with the use of interpretive signs along the trail,” said Phil Hoffman, Project Manager in LDG’s Transportation division.

Duane Daniels, LDG’s Director of Construction Inspection, explained some of the construction challenges on the project.

“While this project was not overly complex to build, the Riverwalk had relatively few construction access points over the 4-mile paved corridors,” he said. “The lack of access points and narrow levees lengthened the hauling periods which slowed construction progress.”

Consisting of about 11 students and three faculty from Bucknell, the group took a walking tour of the Riverwalk as part of the learning experience.

The Susquehanna Riverwalk is a paved pedestrian and bicycle trail that runs along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in the City of Williamsport and South Williamsport. A multi-agency and municipal effort to construct, the nearly three-mile trail features interpretive signage that narrates the area’s rich lumber heritage.

Larson Design Group Participates in ENR Survey

Larson Design Group recently participated in the second quarterly ENR Construction Industry Confidence Index survey. The survey is designed to assess the mood of the industry about the economy, the construction market as a whole, and the various market sectors within the industry.

According to the results, “Responses from 610 executives of large construction and design firms confirm the general sense that there will be no recovery any time soon, either in the construction market or in the general economy.”

Larson Design Group Makes the Marcellus Safer and Better

Marty provides an introduction to LDG’s efforts within the Marcellus to the Montoursville High School’s AP Economics class.

Larson Design Group is recognized by many national organizations as one of the leading design firms in the United States. While we are very proud of this accomplishment, we remain focused on our existing clients and their needs. Many of our clients feel the impact of natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale Play. While Marcellus activity is relatively new to our area, Larson Design Group was involved at the very early stages.

For roughly three years, Larson Design Group has been supplying a broad array of clients with engineering, architecture, and surveying solutions in support of Marcellus development. We have helped municipalities, authorities, state agencies, developers, gas exploration firms, mid-stream operators, colleges, and healthcare providers improve their operations and plan for the future. While you understand our firm’s design activities, you may not understand the other roles we play.

For example, the role sanitary authorities have played relative to treating and disposing of waters generated by Marcellus activity has changed drastically. When drilling activity started, many sanitary authorities tried to treat Marcellus waters with biological processes. While possible in a theoretical sense, this approach was not practical considering the real and vital mission of a sanitary authority. Some of our clients tried this approach, and we gave them good, consistent advice. When it became clear that sanitary authorities weren’t the answer for Marcellus waters, Larson Design Group used its technical knowledge to form TerrAqua Resource Management, LLC (TARM). TARM’s mission is simple: to develop treatment solutions for Marcellus waters that do not dump total dissolved solids (TDS) into the water shed. Today, TARM is a fully-operational subsidiary of Larson Design Group with 8 employees and a growing list of clients. Not only is this a successful enterprise, but it shows how technical designs can grow to become a solution for Marcellus development. Most importantly, TARM is highly compliant with regulatory agencies.

Larson Design Group plays the role of government advisor. In the Marcellus Shale Play, everyone’s objective is challenged from time to time. We do take a neutral position on how the community and regulatory agencies address the impacts. Larson Design Group’s effort is to use highly-compliant design approaches to make systems, assets, and communities work better during Marcellus development. Daily, we are approached by clients, friends, and constituents about what alternatives are available and which would work best for them. We appreciate being asked to help. Larson Design Group focuses on what is required, how to exceed the requirements, and reaching a balance that satisfies all involved. It’s about providing sustainable solutions in order to protect human health and the environment.

Larson Design Group to Receive YWCA Inspiration Award

LDG has provided the Williamsport YWCA with design services for several energy-saving projects including these solar panels.

Larson Design Group (LDG) has been selected by the YWCA of Northcentral Pennsylvania to receive the YWCA Inspiration Award. An annual luncheon and awards ceremony will be held at the YWCA at its Fourth Street location on October 18.

The Inspiration Award is given to an organization that helps the YWCA in advancing their mission. The award, having only been presented once before to Pennsylvania College of Technology in 2007, recognizes Larson Design Group’s sustained excellence and continued community partnership with the YWCA.

“Whether through individual or corporate collaboration and volunteerism, LDG has helped people build healthier and safer lives,” remarked Diane Glenwright, YWCA’s Executive Director. “We could not be making the progress we have in our facility renovations without their thoughtful and knowledgeable assistance and guidance. Along with the invaluable services of Lawrence Lee Huber, Project Manager – Architecture and his Green Team, we are renovating our building so it can be used to meet our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women for years to come.”

In an effort to increase energy efficiency and offset rising utility costs, the YWCA utilized LDG to design several energy-saving projects which included facility assessments, the addition of solar panels, interior lighting, and new insulation and windows.

The YWCA worked closely with LDG’s Green Team in designing the solar panels.

The total cost of the solar panel project is $138,000 and was partly financed through an Energy Harvest grant through the state Department of Environmental. The Williamsport-Lycoming Foundation also helped to fund the project.

Lycoming County Bridge No. 113 Honored with CCAP Award

A panel of judges representing Pennsylvania Highway Information Association (PHIA), PennDOT, and County Commissioners of Pennsylvania (CCAP) selected the Lycoming County Bridge No. 113 over English Run in Pine Township as a “Winner” of the 2009 Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Awards Program. This bridge was funded partially by an Innovative Bridge Research and Construction (IBRC) grant. Lycoming County received a $134,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration, and the remainder of the bridge costs were covered by federal, state, and the County liquid fuel funds. Larson Design Group (LDG) completed the design and construction inspection services for this project. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. replaced the bridge deck.

“Pennsylvania faces a transportation crisis of a magnitude never seen before in our history. Counties across this state are faced with a growing backlog of structurally-deficient bridges at a time when heavy hauling operations are escalating the usage of these bridges. Therefore, to address the backlog of nearly 100 structurally-deficient state and locally-owned bridges in Lycoming County, we are working with PennDOT and our local municipalities to identify and implement innovative techniques to deliver cost effective bridge improvements more quickly,” said Mark Murawski, Lycoming County Transportation Planner. “This revolutionary experimental bridge deck replacement project using Fiber Reinforced Polymer material was quickly constructed to avoid a long-term shutdown to Fisher Mining Company coal transport operations, a major employer in Lycoming County that had no alternate access. Our result was one less structurally-deficient bridge completed using a cost-effective and innovative solution that allows this company to deliver its products to outside markets without interruption” he said.

By replacing the existing open-steel grid deck, pedestrians and bicyclists in addition to mine traffic can now use the bridge more safely. The new Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Deck has a Polyester Polymer Concrete wearing surface, which has a high-skid resistance similar to that of concrete. It has an estimated service life that exceeds 50 years. The longevity association with the FRP deck is a significant advantage when considering long-term transportation uses at this site.

Larson Design Group’s (LDG) building design for Dominion Transmission’s new office in Sabinsville, PA has received LEED® Gold Certification. LEED is an internationally-recognized green bulding certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Studies have shown that LEED buildings decrease turnover and absenteeism, while enhancing productivity by creating a healthier workplace.

“LDG’s Architectural group have a strong background in sustainable design that meets the needs and budget requirements of our clients,” said Lawrence Lee Huber, Architect. “This building is a case in point of our ability to meet our clients’ requirements in a sustainable design.”

One of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy, Dominion Transmission operates a natural gas storage facility that serves 11 states. The company also operates electric generation and transmission and has ventured into renewable energy projects such as hydro and wind power.

“By pursuing a high level of sustainability, we were able to achieve LEED Gold certification, which surpassed our initial project goals,” said Serena Wray, LEED AP, Architectural Designer.

The 12,000 square foot building features numerous sustainability measures, including the introduction of natural daylight with skylights, sun tunnels, and triple-pane operable windows. Cellulose insulation, made from recycled newspaper, increases energy efficiency. Plumbing fixtures lower the building’s water use by 46% over a conventional office building, while highly-efficient HVAC and lighting systems contribute to an energy savings of 32%. Low-VOC finishes provide an aesthetic comfort on the inside, while recycled stone veneer and siding beautify the exterior. Occupancy and daylighting sensors help to reduce electric use in the building, and a computer-based building management system controls and monitors the HVAC system. The facility’s site plan features native plant species which require no irrigation when fully established.

Susquehanna River Walk & Timber Trail Ribbon Cutting

On May 15, 2010 The City of Williamsport held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new River Walk along the Susquehanna River. Designed by Larson Design Group in collaboration with the Lycoming County Planning Commission, the River Walk is a paved pathway along the dike of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River spanning from Montoursville to Maynard Street in Williamsport.

“As the county engineering firm, LDG is community-minded and is involved in different organizations. Lycoming County is enthusiastic about the River Walk project and thinks it will be an outstanding facility that will further enhance the town and its tourism opportunities,” says Mark Murawski, Transportation Planner, Lycoming County Planning Commission.

The ribbon cutting event marked the grand opening of the River Walk with a 5K Fun Run/Walk, a Group Dog Walk, and Trail Cleanup. At the event there was entertainment, kids’ activities, historical displays, storytellers, bicycle borrowing, and arts & open air painters.

Larson Design Group (LDG) has been ranked number 437 on Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) 2010 Top 500 Design Firms list . Published annually in April, ENR ranks the 500 largest U.S.-based design firms, both publicly and privately held, based on design-specific revenue. Established in 1993, Larson Design Group is an employee-owned firm that offers architectural, engineering, and surveying services. With 200+ staff, the firm has five branch offices with headquarters in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Wellsboro’s Central Avenue Bridge Honored with Award

A panel of judges representing Pennsylvania Highway Information Association (PHIA), PennDOT, and Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs (PSAB) selected the Central Avenue Bridge over Kelsey Creek in Wellsboro as a “Winner” of the 2009 Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Awards Program.
Larson Design Group (LDG) completed the design and construction inspection services for this bridge replacement project. Nestlerode Contracting, Inc. constructed the bridge.

“Wellsboro Borough officials couldn’t be more pleased or proud of the bridge replacement project,” said Sue Stephens, Secretary/Treasurer of Wellsboro Borough. “The award confirmed the Borough residents and businesses opinion; that the Jonathan C. Foltz Memorial Bridge is a graceful yet solid design that perfectly fits into our downtown business district. It will also serve as our template for downtown bridge projects far into the future. Best of all, Lt. Foltz’s bravery and sacrifice have now been recognized.”

At the very beginning of the project, the borough was interested in LDG designing a signature structure in Wellsboro that would be recognized by the community and tourists, and maintain some of the characteristics of the downtown historic buildings. Brick veneer that closely resembles the brick color and appearance of the adjacent Tioga County Courthouse was used to add downtown historic character. Four concrete columns were also detailed at the corners of the structure to include the borough’s signature historic street lamps visible throughout downtown Wellsboro.

As part of the project, coordination with Wellsboro Borough, the Wellsboro Historic Architectural Review Board, and committee for the Deane Center for the Performing Arts provided collaboration on the aesthetic appearance of the structure to tie into the existing community buildings and the planned adjacent Deane Center.

“Credit must also be given to PennDOT Engineering District 3-0 in Montoursville,” said Stevan Wilver, P.E., Director of Structural Engineering, as they realized the significance of this structure to the Wellsboro Historic District. “In addition to providing a majority of the funding, PennDOT was responsible for project oversight and agreed to incorporate and share the cost of the aesthetic features,” he said.

Larson Design Group Organizes Earth Day Events

Larson Design Group and its internal group that oversees sustainability initiatives, the Green Team, organized events in support of Earth Day. Employees from our corporate headquarters picked up trash along their stretch of I-180 between Faxon and Basin Street in Williamsport for PennDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway program.

“Like many who work in Williamsport, I drive that stretch of I-180 on a regular basis,” said Dave Balzer, Designer in our Building Systems Group. “I was amazed to see the amount of garbage along the Basin Street on ramp. Just goes to show that some people still don’t care about littering, throwing just about anything out the window. But that shouldn’t deter the rest of us from donating a little time and effort to clean things up a bit. Only a few hours a year goes a long way to making our community a little nicer. I sure didn’t mind spending an afternoon outdoors, getting a little exercise!”

A clean-up effort at the Water Tower Square complex where LDG is headquartered was also organized. Space near the parking lots was cleared to make way for picnic tables and other landscape improvements.

“It’s a good feeling of having done something positive for the community and the planet,” said Lawrence Huber, Architect.

Larson Design Group CEO Honored by the Lycoming County United Way

Keith S. Kuzio was honored by the Lycoming County United Way (LCUW) as the recipient of the Douglas C. Dickey Humanitarian Award. This award is presented annually to an individual whose dedication, commitment, and outstanding leadership have made a significant contribution to Lycoming County. Kuzio, a civil engineer with more than a decade of volunteer service with United Way, was presented with the award on Tuesday, March 23 at the organization’s Annual Meeting & Volunteer Appreciation program at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport.

“Keith’s professional expertise in bridge design is a perfect complement to the bridges to the future he has helped build and lead throughout his volunteer tenure with our United Way,” says Scott N. Lowery, LCUW Executive Director. “It is no coincidence that many of the recent progressive changes implemented within our organization were first put on the drawing board under Keith’s leadership. He has a genuine concern for others and a management style conducive to positive action.”

Kuzio served two terms on the LCUW board of directors, including two years as president (2006-2007) and as campaign chair in 2005. He has led projects saving the United Way both time and money including his chairmanship of the 2008 strategic planning committee and membership on the finance and building maintenance committees.

“I’m deeply humbled to be honored with this recognition,” said Kuzio. “The credit really belongs to God’s blessings in my life – to my parents for instilling in me their values of faith, hard work, and service to others, to my wife and kids for encouraging and supporting my efforts to give back to the community, and to Larson Design Group for its longstanding commitment to community stewardship.”

Larson Design Group (LDG) was recently recognized on CollegeGrad.com, the #1 Entry Level Job Site, for having one of the top internship programs in the country. This award not only helps LDG to attract quality applicants for employees, but it also helps the area retain the students who assume they can only find a quality work experience in a larger metropolitan area. Internships are of vital importance to students graduating from college because they provide them with on the job training that many companies require before they will consider an applicant for a position. Some other companies that were on the list include Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Microsoft, and Kohl’s Department Stores.

A major objective of the program at LGD is to develop workers that can fill the company’s needs while at the same time providing valuable on-the-job experience to students attaining their degrees. The returning students were invited back for another summer due to the quality of their performance in the position last year. “It’s been a very good experience and I’m learning a lot of new things,” said Abbie Williams. “I feel challenged at the job, but I still find it enjoyable.”

LDG Presents to Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Association & Offers Perspective on DEP TDS Wastewater Permitting

Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Association (POGAM) held its annual tradeshow at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, Pennsylvania, in early September. This was POGAM’s largest show since the early 1990s. It was a good indication of the importance and vitality of the Marcellus Shale play. The Marcellus Shale is a geological formation that contains large amounts of natural gas. This formation is found in western, north central, and northeastern Pennsylvania.

At the POGAM event, Quay Schappell delivered his perspective on technical issues relating to the permitting policy proposed by PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP has offered draft regulations that would require higher quality standards for water discharged into streams and rivers. DEP proposes to have these new quality standards in place at the beginning of 2011. In this panel discussion entitled DEP’s High TDS Wastewater Permitting Policy, a representative group educated attendees on the scope of the new wastewater management policy and its implication for Marcellus Shale and conventional oil and gas development. Mr. Schappell was joined by John Hines, DEP deputy secretary for water management, Elton DeLong, Pennsylvania Brine Treatment, Inc., and Tony Gaudlip, Range Resources, LLC. Scott Blauvelt of East Resources acted as moderator.

As part of POGAM’s product showcase, Quay Schappell and Marty Muggleton made a presentation entitled: TARM: Support of Well Operations through Recycle/Reuse of Flowback and Produced Water. Drilling operations, especially hydraulic fracturing (fracing), use large amounts of water. This water is obtained via permits from organizations such as the Susquehanna River Basin Commission. As drilling is completed, a large percentage of the water used returns to the surface (flowback). As the water returns, it brings with it the natural occurring minerals and metals found in the earth. The presentation described the opportunities that treatment and reuse of this water can offer firms involved in gas exploration and production. A recycle/reuse strategy supports well operation, reduces road traffic, truck trips, and buffers water withdraw needs.

TerrAqua Resource Management (TARM) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Larson Design Group. Stefanie J. English, P.E. Appointed by Governor Rendell to Serve on the Uniform Construction Code Review and Advisory Council

On February 10, 2009, Stefanie English, P.E., of Larson Design Group (LDG), was appointed to the Uniform Construction Code (UCC) Review and Advisory Council. Stefanie was one of 19 members from various construction industry trades and professions appointed by Edward G. Rendell. Stefanie represents the Council as the licensed structural engineer. Her term runs through June 30, 2010.

On October 10, 2008 the Governor signed into law Act 106 of 2008 which amends the Pennsylvania Construction Code by establishing the Uniform Construction Code Review and Advisory Council. The Council is charged with making recommendations to the Governor, the General Assembly and the Department of Labor & Industry regarding proposed changes to Act 45 (The Pennsylvania Construction Code Act) and changes that appear in the International Codes enforceable under this act.

The UCC holds weekly meetings in Harrisburg that began in the beginning of March. At these meetings, the Council is primarily involved in deliberations on whether any changes in the latest triennial version of the International Codes should be excluded from adoption in Pennsylvania.

James V. Brown Children’s Library Featured in American Libraries Magazine

Every year, American Libraries: the Magazine of the American Library Association spotlights new, expanded, and renovated library buildings in a special Library Design Showcase issue. This year, 73 projects were submitted; 23 were selected by this prestigious publication. The James V. Brown Library Children’s Wing has been designated as one of the best in library design for 2009.

The James V. Brown Library is pleased to be the first Family Place™ Library in the state of Pennsylvania. The Family Place™ project consists of a network of children’s librarians throughout the United States who believe that literacy begins at birth and that they can help build healthy communities by nourishing healthy families. Working with schools, clinics, and other agencies, Family Place™ positions libraries as anchors of their communities and as centers of lifelong learning. Designed by Larson Design Group (LDG), the Kathryn Siegel Welch Children’s Wing incorporates flexible spaces that can be easily modified for various programs and creates attractive and comfortable spaces for youth of all ages. As an inviting interactive learning environment, the building was tailored to meet the philosophy of the Family Place™ project. High-tech and fine art were combined to create both an educational and visually stimulating environment. A unique custom interior was created to incorporate Pennsylvania wildlife as a central theme in the “Amazing Wilds” maze. As children grow from infant to adolescent, the library grows with them. The second floor is dedicated to tweens and teens and is designed with a metropolitan loft atmosphere, creating a feeling of a kid’s own space as they grow into independence.

Since the beginning of the project, the James V. Brown Library was clear about its mission: to meet the needs of children and families in the Williamsport area. To accomplish this, Joyce A. Seno, Associate AIA, Project Manager and the LDG design team worked closely with the library to design a new facility that would implement the best practices in early learning programs, materials, and services. In total, the project encompasses 26,400 square feet in a three-story stately brick building with highlighted concrete features and abundant natural light.

“This project brought the Family Place™ concepts to life in an environment that translated the vision of the James V. Brown Library into reality,” said Ms. Seno. “Working on this community-based project was a truly rewarding experience.”

“As specialists in library design, LDG understands that each library is unique to its community. As users of the library, they understand the customer’s perspective on layout, ease of access, signage and all the other elements that make a building a successful library,” says Janice Trapp, Director James V. Brown Library.

Even in this challenging economy, revitalization can occur. By providing a convenient location, beautiful architecture, and variety of services, the James V. Brown Library children’s wing addition has helped revitalize Williamsport’s downtown district, gearing it toward successful future growth.

LDG’s CANstruction® Team Receives the Top Award for Juror’s Favorite at the 3rd Annual CANstruction® Competition

What do buccaneers, engineering ingenuity, and 4,000 cans of food have in common? Not a techno-pillage of your local supermarket, but a creative chance to stamp out hunger in central Pennsylvania.

As local charities struggle to meet fiduciary and customer demands in the current economy, companies like Larson Design Group (LDG) are still working to give something back to the communities it serves.

On February 27, 2009, the team traveled once again to the Harrisburg Farm Show complex to the 3rd Annual CANstruction® competition to assemble their latest creation, “The BucCANeer” – a pirate ship, complete with masts and flags of skulls and crossbones. While deciding this year’s theme, the team wanted to do it bigger and better than last year’s Covered Bridge – creating a design that not only met an engineering challenge but utilized more cans that would end up well-received at local food banks.

The result? LDG’s team build took the top award for Juror’s Favorite at the competition’s awards ceremony on March 2nd, allowing their photo to be displayed at the 2009 National CANstruction® competition in San Diego, California. More importantly, the event as a whole generated nearly 28,000 cans that will be distributed to 5 counties and 216 food pantries which serve over 12,200 households.

“Judges commented our design was the first they’ve seen in the three years of CANstruction® Harrisburg that had a good chance at the national level,” said Brandon S. Peak, Architectural Designer at LDG and team captain. “But the real reason we do this is to give back. Everyone at LDG pulls together to raise funds to buy the cans, our team has a lot of fun, and the end result is help to those in our community who need it. It can’t get better than that.”

CANstruction® is a design/build competition in which teams of architects, engineers, and students design and build structures made only from full cans of food. After competition, all of the cans are donated to local food banks for distribution. Since CANstruction®’s inception ten million pounds of food have been donated to help the fight against hunger.

Larson Design Group Joins Marcellus Shale Industry Partnership

Marty Muggleton, Vice President of Marketing and Client Development at Larson Design Group (LDG), has become part of the Marcellus Shale Industry Partnership. This partnership is collaboration between the Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center and the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Corporation. His efforts will help the organizations conduct a needs assessment that addresses the training and employment needs that are resulting from gas exploration in the Marcellus Shale Play.

Based on LDG’s growth, Marty is aware of the value of a prepared workforce. “Our firm is successful at recruiting, retaining, and training design professionals in our six offices in New York and Pennsylvania. The Marcellus activity places new demands on our staff and offices. We need more professionals with a strong interest in energy related projects. We’re not the only company subject to this change. Companies and employees that adapt will succeed, grow, and help unlock the wealth that natural gas represents. The Marcellus Shale Industry Partnership will result in the creation of a central repository of courses for the industry and serve as a coordination point for training and employment needs along with supplying the resources to help cover the cost of this training.”

This assessment will include input from nearly three dozen professional from the private and public sectors. This process will be completed during three work session and should be completed by late 2009.

Larson Design Group Staff Provides Expertise to Help Create Chesapeake Bay Nutrient Management Strategy

Three design professionals from Larson Design Group (LDG) are helping Lycoming County develop its Chesapeake Bay Nutrient Management Strategy. Keith Kuzio, Dave Walters, and Eric Moore have accepted Commissioner Jeff Wheeland’s invitation to join the Lycoming County Chesapeake Bay Strategy Advisory Committee and Work Groups. Commissioner Wheeland is Chairman of the advisory committee.

Kuzio, Walters, and Moore are all residents of Lycoming County and have decades of experience helping the county, communities, and various authorities deal with economic development and water resource issues. Each brings unique technical knowledge, which is reflected by their assignments.

Keith Kuzio, P.E. and CEO of LDG, is performing two roles. He serves as the engineering community representative to the Lycoming County Chesapeake Bay Strategy Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee is assisting in developing a County based strategy to effectively reduce the cost to discharge nutrient loads into the Susquehanna River. In addition, Keith is helping interpret the impact on economic development and identifying financing methods as part of the Economic Development and Finance Work Group.

Dave Walters, P.E. is the Director of LDG’s Water/Wastewater Department. Dave will be a member of the Point Source Work Group and will act as Keith Kuzio’s designee on the advisory committee. Eric Moore, P.E. and Project Manager at LDG, will be joining Dave on the work group. Eric and Dave will help determine what role point source discharge reduction will play in the strategy. Dave will also be serving as the alternate engineering community representative. Point source discharges are a source of nutrient pollution that can be attributed to a specific physical location – an identifiable, end-of-pipe point. The vast majority of point source discharges are from wastewater treatment plants, although some come from industry.

The Lycoming County Chesapeake Bay Strategy Advisory Group’s efforts will result in the implementation of the County-based strategy starting in 2009. PADEP will require nutrient reduction compliance at wastewater treatment plants in Lycoming County as early as October 2010.

Larson Design Group Staff Supports Community Gas Exploration Task Force

Two staff members from Larson Design Group have volunteered their expertise in support of Lycoming County Pennsylvania’s Community Gas Exploration Task Force. Quay Schappell serves on the Planning and Zoning Subcommittee while Marty Muggleton serves on the Economic Development Subcommittee. The knowledge that Marty and Quay share with the Task Force is based on the relationships they have formed with the numerous gas exploration, production, and transmission clients.

The Community Gas Exploration Task Force is lead by Commissioner Rebecca Burke. The mission of the Task Force is to identify key issues, research fact and information, and review and propose public policy regarding the positive, economic impact of gas exploration of the Marcellus Shale in Lycoming County.

Early on Marty and Quay saw value in this effort. Marty summarized it this way, “It is important for community stakeholders to help position the county and region to capture the opportunities the Marcellus Shale offers. Land leases have delivered wealth in our county, but that is the start. Getting the gas to market is the key step. If all goes well, decades of wealth can be unlocked without damaging our communities and environment. The Task Force has established the proper approach and leadership.”

Larson Design Group Acquires Fisher Engineering

Larson Design Group (LDG) acquired Fisher Engineering, Inc. (FEI), a 10-person civil and environmental firm based in Ephrata, Pennsylvania.

The merging of LDG and FEI not only expands municipal capabilities and geographic reach; more importantly, this transition benefits clients and combined staff through additional opportunities for growth and collaboration.

Acquisition of a business is a serious undertaking. The process requires detailed analysis of core strengths, staff capabilities, market position, and brand value. Both LDG and FEI realized early on they shared a common theme of entrepreneurship and growth.

Fisher Engineering, Inc. was established in 1989 by entrepreneur James R. Fisher, P.E. in an office at his home. Jim’s vision was to provide design services to individual homeowners, developers, professional land surveyors, and area municipalities. His initial work was as a subconsultant designing on-lot sewage systems and stormwater management facilities. It did not take Jim long to become successful in the municipal market.

In 1994 FEI was incorporated and an office was opened in the Lincoln section of Ephrata in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1995 a branch office was opened in Bethel, Berks County to serve local clients in Schuylkill, northern Lebanon and Berks counties. In 2006 the main office was moved to an impressive historic (circa 1856) structure at 901 Dawn Avenue in Ephrata. FEI has provided civil, sanitary, and environmental services throughout Pennsylvania to public and private sector clients including individuals, architects, surveyors, engineers, planners, local government, and residential, commercial, agricultural, and institutional developers. On staff are professional engineers, sewage enforcement officers, wetland scientists, and biologists.

During this same period of time, LDG followed its own course of success and growth. Like FEI, LDG was the vision of entrepreneurs. An engineer, architect, and professional land surveyor made real their vision for a design firm that would benefit its clients, employees, and community. Pre-acquisition, LDG has grown to 195 employees headquartered in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with offices in Bloomsburg and Selinsgrove, and Corning, New York. In early May, LDG relocated its Selinsgrove office to a new facility on Route 522.

In terms of benefiting clients and employees at the same time, Keith S. Kuzio, P.E., LDG’s Chief Executive Officer, said, While the sizes of our firms are different, it’s clear that we have had similar experiences. In order to grow a design firm, you have to remain client-centric. It’s all about the client, always listening to determine what they need and when they need it. The key to implementing this approach is quality staff. Recruiting quality people to a growing firm offers them career advancement. By staying focused on the client and supporting our people as they improve, our firm can grow.

Jim sees the relationship between staff and clients as another key part of the firms’ histories.
“FEI and LDG have taken the same approach, he explained. Ours is a personal commitment to the client. Sure, you hire the firm to get all the talent the team brings, but the person that manages your project makes it happen the way you need it. When you build understanding and trust, the value of our company’s services increases. My staff has been the key to my success, and it’s the same with LDG. Both firms know how to do it. Now we can do it together.”

LDG is 100% employee owned. Employee ownership is something that Jim believes in and considered going in that direction. “As I looked at the opportunities,” he said, “I wanted to put my staff in the best possible position. Converting our small firm to 100% employee owned wasn’t economically practical. There is a lot of work and expense involved regardless of the size of your firm. I really believe my employees should be owners, because it will make them better professionals. LDG’s set up is what I wanted to achieve.”

Keith recalls that employee ownership was a topic during his first telephone call with Jim: “The first time we spoke, we discussed the cultures of our firms: how we treat employees, our decision processes, quality, and how we support the communities we do business in. The conversation was comfortable from the beginning. I believe it went that way because our firms are so much alike. We have a common history and culture. Now we have a common future, and I’m looking forward to our success.”

The former FEI office locations and staff will remain unchanged after the acquisition, and additional hires are anticipated. Andrew Keister, P.E., Director of LDG’s Site Engineering, will be located in the Ephrata office for one year to focus on private sector clients and the integration of best practices between the expanded network of LDG offices. Jim Fisher, P.E. will focus on municipal clients and continue in a leadership role at the Ephrata and Bethel offices.

Larson Design Group and Montour County Commissioners Honored with Award

The Montour County Commissioners have received the 2007 CCAP Annual Safety Award for Montour County Bridge #17. The new bridge, designed by the structural engineers at Larson Design Group, eliminated the approach and bridge width safety issues, and reduced flooding concerns. Harold Hurst, Montour County Commissioner speaks out about LDG, “I have the highest regard for the professionalism, efficiency, and responsiveness of the engineers of Larson Design Group. Their understanding of the challenges of local governments makes them the first choice for projects of this type.”

This project involved the replacement of a deteriorated, functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridge. The original County Bridge #17 was a single-lane, steel riveted pony truss with a concrete deck and stone masonry concrete encased abutments. The new bridge has no load postings, was detailed so that the geometry can accommodate two lanes of traffic, and utilizes PennDOT’s newer Type 10M bridge railing. The new structure and roadway alignment reduced (but could not completely eliminate) the frequency of flooding and the water surface elevation for all storms.

This project required a great deal of cooperation between Montour County, Limestone Township, PennDOT, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Northumberland County Conservation District, utilities, and the local community. Additional cooperation was required with the Amish community and the existing Amish business on the southwest side of the project. The weight restrictions and limited roadway width on the existing structure impacted the Amish business’s customers and deliveries. The widened roadway width on the new structure and the elimination of load postings now provides free access to the southwest on Township Road 417 from State Route 54.

Larson Design Group (LDG) Expands to Selinsgrove, PA

Larson Design Group, a firm supplying professional services in the fields of architecture, engineering, and survey, is opening its newest office at 22 North Market Street, Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. The Selinsgrove location joins a growing network of offices that include Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania and Corning, New York. Larson Design Group is headquartered in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The Selinsgrove office will allow Larson Design Group to better serve existing and new clients in the Greater Susquehanna Valley and markets to the south. This expansion will also allow Larson Design Group to increase its community stewardship in the Greater Susquehanna Valley by supporting non-profit organizations that improve the region.

The decision to open the Selinsgrove office was preceded by a diligent analysis of current and future business conditions in the region. During 2006 input was solicited from public and private sector leadership. This information, and Larson Design Group’s knowledge of the region, helped form the conclusion that a multi-discipline office in the Greater Susquehanna Valley was needed.

Selinsgrove was selected because of its central location in the region, ease of access, and availability of office space. The office will serve public and private sector clients and will be led by Justin Keister, P.E. and Adam Steininger, P.E.. Starting January 15th, they may be reached at 570.374.5700. The office opens with eight design professionals on staff, with future additions anticipated.

Larson Design Group (LDG) Appoints Duane R. Daniels to Director of Construction Inspection

Larson Design Group an engineering, architectural and surveying company, has announced that Duane R. Daniels, P.E. has been appointed to the position of Director of Construction Inspection.

Daniels has been a Structural Engineer with LDG since 1994. His experience includes bridge design, highway design, bridge safety inspection and construction management. He has experience in the design and development of projects on the state, county and local levels. As Director, Daniels is responsible for supervising design and construction services as well as adherence to project budgets and schedules. Other responsibilities include quality control, proposal preparation and marketing, client management, budget preparation and control, subconsultant coordination, and training and mentoring of junior staff.

Most recently, Daniels performed project design and construction management for emergency replacement of the Highland Terrace Bridge over Grafius Run in Williamsport, PA. The project included the replacement bridge, a sewer line relocation, new water line, drainage and approach roadway improvements.

Larson Design Group (LDG) was one of the engineering companies honored as a National Finalist for the 2004 ACEC (American Council of Engineering Companies) Engineering Excellence Awards for its design of the Route 15 South Welcome Center in Tioga, Pennsylvania. The award was presented at the recent Engineering Excellence Awards gala on March 16th at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Washington, DC.

The ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards recognize “innovation, expertise, and ingenuity in engineering achievement.” The achivevments of these private engineering firms are recognized by Members of Congress, federal agencies and the national media.

On the way to becoming a National Finalist, the project garnered and “Honor Award” at the ACEC/PA (American Consulting Engineers Council of Pennsylvania) Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence in the Building Services category. This award was presented at a ceremony in Hershey, PA.

The Welcome Center project as truly a team effort. Pennsylvania’s Route 15 is a major North-South highway through Central Pennsylvania. Over the last decade, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) has improved its various sections to satisfy the area’s growing infrastructure. In the future, the northernmost portion of Route 15 between Williamsport and the New York state line will become Interstate 99, leading into New York State and through some of the most natural beauty the area has to offer. To enhance interstate travel while showcasing the aesthetics of the region, PENNDOT planned to construct a state welcome center in Tioga County at a scenic vista overlooking the Tioga-Hammond Dam. A steering committee made up of local officials and tourist-related business developed a concept plan for the center over a period of four years leading up to construction.

While the idea of constructing a welcome center came readily, the construction of the welcome center faced many challenges. At the project’s site, nearly 400,000 cubic yards of rock had to be blasted and removed to construct the road base for a new four-lane highway. The newly-created plateau, however, created one of the most spectacular views imaginable of the Tioga Valley and the Tioga-Hammond Reservoir complex. LDG’s design professionals had to utilize the long and narrow site to create an area that captured the aesthetic scenery of the region while providing a facility with adequate amenities and information for travelers. A lack of nearby nearby utilities, such as water, sewer and electric, forced LDG to plan for the construction of those systems to stretch over one quarter of a mile up the side of the mountain to the site.

Incorporating preliminary ideas of the steering committee, the Building Systems Group developed the architectural concept for the project and provided all of the design services associated with the building and its support structures, including architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing design. Supporting services needed for a successful and functional design were provided by LDG’s site and water/wastewater engineers, including the site survey, parking and site design, landscape architecture, utility design and water supply system. The Transportation Group was indirectly involved with the project through the highway design of the new Route 15 (future I-99) in the corridor adjacent to the Welcome Center site. The resulting facility unites the region’s natural beauty with precise architecture, building structure and support systems that provide travelers with an “invisible” connection to the modern conveniences.

“This project represents the true capabilities of our company,” said Robert J. Gehr, project manager for the Welcome Center’s design by LDG. “It’s plain to see that the overall impact of the project has been very dramatic and now formally recognized by our professional peers.”

Kenneth C. Larson, founder and CEO of Larson Design Group (LDG), Has Announced His Retirement

Kenneth C. Larson, founder and CEO of Larson Design Group (LDG), announced his retirement recently at an employee ceremony.

Larson has served as President for the company he founded in 1993. He supervised all engineering and surveying projects and maintained project management responsibilities. He served as principal on such projects as the Warren Street Bypass in Berks County, a 6.5-mile multi-lane highway, and project manager for the $1 million street revitalization project for Mount Carmel Borough. He has also served as principal in design work for the City of Shamokin, Lycoming County, Boroughs of South Williamsport and Lewisburg, and PennDOT.

From 1956-1986, Larson worked in various engineering and management positions with PennDOT District 3-0. He held the position of District Engineer for 20 years and also served as District Engineer for Pre-Construction, District Location Engineer, and Consultant Liaison Engineer. During his tenure, the District encompassed 9 counties with over 4,000 miles of highway.

In 1986, Larson joined in a merger between the surveying practice of Robert Ferrell and the branch office of the Corning, NY-based engineering firm, Hunt Engineers and Architects, P.C. From there, he worked as Office Manager and Vice President until 1993, when the branch office was bought from Hunt through a 100% employee stock buyout. The new firm was named Larson Design Group to reflect its future and independence.

Larson Design Group (LDG) Has Elected C. Frederick LaVancher as Chairman of the Board

Larson Design Group (LDG) recently elected the inclusion of C. Frederick LaVancher as Chairman of the Board. LaVancher will replace former Chairman and founder of Larson Design Group, Kenneth C. Larson, who recently retired.

LaVancher has been employed with Larson Design Group since its inception. As a business development representative, he has assisted municipal clients with community development issues, governmental management, citizen participation function, and state and federal financial assistance applications. He has extensive experience in grants management and local government administration. He has served as a local Borough Councilman for 25 years and is the immediate past president of the Tioga County Development Corporation.

LaVancher has been responsible for liaison and administration for projects throughout the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, including the Route 15 South/I-99 Welcome Center in Tioga. He has also assisted in site selection, grant funding and client management for municipal projects for Lawrence Township, Tioga Borough, Borough of Sayre, and Muncy Creek Township. LaVancher is extensively involved in the community, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Route 15 Coalition and the Appalachian Thruway Association; board member of Mill Cove, Inc.; Advisory Committee Member of Citizens and Northern Bank in Tioga, PA; and Full Commissioner Member of the Northern Tier Regional Planning and Development Commission, representing Tioga County.

Larson Design Group (LDG) Holds an Open House in Celebration of its 10th Anniversary of Employee Ownership

Larson Design Group (LDG) held an open house on September 11th, from 3-7 p.m., in celebration of its 10th Anniversary of Employee Ownership and in honor of clients and employees who have helped build the company’s foundation of success. Close to 300 clients, vendors, and friends visited LDG’s headquarters at the Water Tower Square complex in Williamsport.

AnnMarie Phillips of Phillips Supply House in Williamsport has known and worked with LDG for many years.

“I found it incredulous at how many projects Larson Design Group has been involved with,” she said, “from watersheds, highways, residential communities, to chain stores. It may also be little known how good LDG is to the community with volunteerism. At every function [you] attend, someone from LDG is there.”

Larson Design Group has been a company with a history of growth, with its beginning under Hunt Engineers and Architects, P.C., in 1975. Hunt expanded into Central Pennsylvania in 1986 through a merger with Robert W. Ferrell Engineering and Surveying and the opening of a Williamsport regional office. By September of 1988, Hunt’s Williamsport services were greatly expanded by a merger with John Hoffman Architect, adding seven architectural staff members.

In 1993, the employees of this Williamsport based corporation acquired full ownership of the Williamsport offices from its parent company. The firm was renamed Larson Design Group, Inc. (LDG) and its affiliate, Larson Architectural Group (LAG) to reflect the company’s new local ownership and independence.
