Apollonius of Perga (c. 262 BC–c. 190 BCE) responded by introducing two new mechanisms that allowed a planet to vary its distance and speed: the eccentric deferent and the deferent and epicycle. The deferent is a circle carrying the planet around the Earth. (The word deferent comes from the Latin ferro, ferre, meaning "to carry.") An eccentric deferent is slightly off-center from Earth. In a deferent and epicycle model, the deferent carries a small circle, the epicycle, which carries the planet. The deferent-and-epicycle model can mimic the eccentric model, as shown by Apollonius' theorem. It can also explain retrogradation, which happens when planets appear to reverse their motion through the zodiac for a short time. For the Sun, he used a simple eccentric model, based on observations of the equinoxes, which explained both changes in the speed of the Sun and differences in the lengths of the seasons. For the Moon, he used a deferent and epicycle model. He could not create accurate models for the remaining planets, and criticized other Greek astronomers for creating inaccurate models.
Through the centuries of Assyrian domination, Babylonia enjoyed a prominent status, and revolted at the slightest indication that it did not. However, the Assyrians always managed to restore Babylonian loyalty, whether through granting of increased privileges, or militarily. That finally changed in 627 BC with the death of the last strong Assyrian ruler, Ashurbanipal, and Babylonia rebelled under Nabopolassar the Chaldean the following year. With help from the Medes, Nineveh was attacked in 612, and the seat of empire was again transferred to Babylonia.
Hipparchus also compiled a star catalogue. According to Pliny the Elder, he observed a nova (new star). So that later generations could tell whether other stars came to be, perished, moved, or changed in brightness, he recorded the position and brightness of the stars. Ptolemy mentioned the catalogue in connection with Hipparchus' discovery of precession. (Precession of the equinoxes is a slow motion of the place of the equinoxes through the zodiac, caused by the shifting of the Earth's axis). Historians believe that Valentine's Day originated from an ancient Roman feast called Lupercalia.The Romans worshipped a god called Lupercus, a protective deity who kept wild wolves from overrunning the city. The festival held to honor Lupercus was held on February 15, and was celebrated as a spring festival (the calendar was a bit different in those days).

One of the customs associated with Lupercalia was the practice of name- drawing. On Lupercalia Eve the names of young girls were written down on pieces of paper and put in jars, from which each young man would draw. The particular girl each young man drew would be his "girlfriend" for the year. This was the origin of the romantic connotation observed in modern Valentine's Day.

Around the 3rd century A.D. (when Christianity was still a new religion in the Roman Empire) there lived a priest named Valentine. Claudius II was the Emperor of Rome at this time, and in the interest of keeping his army strong, he issued an order prohibiting soldiers from getting married. Claudius believed that his soldiers would be more effective as single men, without having families to worry about.
Needless to say, this wasn't a terribly popular decision among the military men, particularly those who were already engaged to be married. In defiance of the Emperor, the priest Valentine agreed to secretly marry the soldiers and their beloved.
Unfortunately, Rome was a much smaller town in those days, and word travelled fast. When Claudius got wind of what was happening, he ordered Valentine arrested and imprisoned. He was sentenced to death and beheaded.

The Lupercalia celebration went on as before for many years following the death of Valentine. As time passed Christianity became more and more firmly established, and at some point the Romans renamed the pagan feast of Lupercalia for Valentine, who by that point had been canonized to become St. Valentine.
Valentine greetings continue to be exchanged today by friends and lovers - a tradition that will, no doubt, be around for some centuries yet to come!
