Tinker, tiller, technical change : technologies from the people / edited by Matthew Gamser, Helen Appleton and Nicola Carter.

London, UK : Intermediate Technology Publications ; [1990] Abstract: Why do so many attempts to introduce ‘western’ technologies into poor communities end in failure? Certainly not because poor people resist change, or because they are unwilling to work with new machines and ideas. Poor communities are, in fact, centres of innovation. The poorer and more desperate the situation, the greater the need to innovate. To cease to change is to cease to survive. Technical assistance often fails to bring change because it fails to work with local innovation and innovators. When the ‘experts’ do not recognize that technological development is taking place locally, or take the time to understand how local investigations are organized and supported, opportunities to benefit from local knowledge, experience, and creatively are lost. Tinker, Tiller, Technical Change seeks to raise awareness of people’s innovation. Its authors consider 17 cases of locally developed technologies from 14 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. They examine who are the innovators, how they work, what motivates them, and what constrains their productivity. On a regional and a global level they consider how technical assistance work can make better use of this powerful resource for change. –Page 4 of cover.
Veilig verpakt : handboek verpakken voor het behoud van archieven en collecties / tekst en samenstelling: Gabriëlle Beentjes.

[Den Haag] : Metamorfoze, [2026] Abstract: "In dit handboek geven we een zo compleet mogelijk overzicht van wat er allemaal komt kijken bij het goed en veilig verpakken van archief- en bibliotheekmateriaal. We behandelen de basisprincipes van het verpakken. Het gaat over waar een verpakking aan moet voldoen en hoe je een archief voorbereidt op verpakken. Er staan instructies in voor (onder andere) het vouwen van een omslag en het verwijderen van nietjes. En je leest er welke afspraken je moet maken binnen je instelling zodat iedereen op dezelfde manier verpakt. Er is aandacht voor bijzondere documentvormen die niet in de standaardformaat archiefdoos passen. Dit gaat van grote registers tot charters en fotografische materialen. We beschrijven hoe je dit soort materiaal het best kunt verpakken. We geven ook instructies. Te beginnen met een uitleg van basistechnieken zoals vouwen en snijden. Voor een goede verpakking is het namelijk belangrijk om deze technieken goed te beheersen. Verder vind je er beschrijvingen van specifieke verpakkingen"-- ASC Subject Headings: library and information science. ; conservation of cultural heritage. ; packaging. ;
