<![CDATA[<span>ON THE SURFACE, UGANDA&#8217;S 2026 ELECTION unfolded largely as expected. Widespread suspicions that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) would skew the official outcome in its favour appear to have been borne out. Marked by state-orchestrated internet and mobile-money shutdowns, faulty biometric machines, massive military deployments before, during, and after election day, persistent repression of the opposition, and historically low turnout, the disputed elections delivered an overwhelming victory for the Yoweri Museveni-led NRM, extending the Ugandan president&#8217;s reign into its fifth decade.</span>]]>
