Smiling exudes happiness, confidence, and a healthy outlook on life. A smile can help land that job you’ve been hoping to get, keep your spirits up and make someone feel special, but when someone is battling gum disease, their smile may have disappeared. Periodontal disease can greatly impact how a person feels about their appearance and affect their smile. Luckily, there are a variety of dental professionals available to address your concerns in Long Island. Gum disease does not need to be a concern any longer!

Healthy gums are the foundation of your teeth and maintaining oral health is the key in keeping periodontal disease at bay. Ask you dentist what you can do to prevent gum disease. If gum disease is the diagnosis, your dentist will refer you to a gum specialist to treat it. Gum disease treatment can stop the progression of the disease. Don’t ruin your beauty with poor dental health practices. With the proper gum care and treatment, you’ll keep that dazzling smile.

Gum disease starts when plaque and tartar build at the base of your teeth, causing an infection. The infection will cause your gums to become inflamed and start to bleed. Teeth may begin to become loose and separate. And your beautiful smile will fade away. Typical gum treatment consists of scaling and root planning. Known as a non surgical procedure that removes plaque from the mouth, this can be a quite effective tool in stopping the disease from progressing. This is typically referred to as “deep cleaning”. But if inflammation and bleeding continue, surgery may be the next option.

The thought of gum surgery can scare even the toughest people away. It’s no wonder many people put it off until it’s too late. Dr. David Scharf, a Suffolk County periodontist, dedicated to the prevention of Long Island gum disease, is the first periodontist to be trained and licensed in laser periodontal therapy, a non surgical treatment in gum disease. His gentle manner will put your fears to rest.

Are you looking for gum reconstruction Long Island? Dr Scharf specializes in the treatment of gum reconstruction, dental implants and gum treatment. He uses a laser instead of a scalpel and is conveniently located for those who live in Suffolk or Nassau County Long Island. If you’re searching for an alternative to gum surgery, call Dr. Scharf at (631-661-6633) or visit his web site at: http://drscharf.com

If you want to Know How Inflammation Affects the Whole Body, visit a Periodontist on Long Island

In stressful times people tend to neglect their health, but by reducing stress, you may be able to prevent gum disease and maintain a healthy mouth.

Stress Less
It’s almost impossible to stay stress free in the economic climate we’re facing. With job rates plummeting, home foreclosures, and businesses failing, it’s taking a major toll on American’s health. Stress can cause numerous health issues and may even lead to gum disease. In times of stress people tend to neglect there health, when, in fact, it’s a crucial time to pay extra attention to your over all health. Neglecting your gums can ultimately lead to significant bone and tooth loss. According to the Dentists for Diabetics, a study in 2007 was performed on 45 people, showing a strong link between gum disease and stress and chronic depression. For this reason, it is important to schedule time to visit a Long Island periodontist.

Treatment
Chronic stress and long-term depression is a physical or emotional condition that weakens the immune system and causes an elevated plaque level which can lead to periodontal disease. If unchecked, periodontal disease can lead to serious health problems. Studies have found gum disease to be linked to heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Seek out a dentist who truly understands the link between gum disease and health issues. And once you’ve been evaluated by your regular dentist, he or she may refer you to a periodontist. Only a thorough examination by a periodontist can reveal if gum disease is present and then a course of action should be decided.

Periodontist on Long Island
Treating gum disease can save your life and if you’re diagnosed with periodontal disease, your periodontist will discuss forms of treatment with you. Appropriate treatment will be recommended, and in some cases that may mean surgery. In Suffolk County, Long Island, periodontist, Dr David R. Scharf, has been specifically trained in preventing and treating gum disease. He offers a form of treatment for people living in Long Island seeking a non surgical alternative for their gum disease.

Stress can be deadly and has a negative impact on everyone, but if you eat right, exercise, maintain a healthy attitude, and take care of your gums, you can reduce the damage that stress can cause.

People looking for a Long Island periodontist, should contact Dr. Scharf at
(631) 661-6633 or visit his web site at drscharf.com He treats gum disease with a laser rather than using a scalpel.

Smoking and Periodontal Disease by Periodontist David Scharf

Smoking and Periodontal Disease

Do you smoke? I am sure that you hear every day how smoking can put you at risk for many different health problems. Did you know that smoking can also put you at risk for gum disease? Long Island Periodontist Dr. David Scharf wants you to know this.

Any doctor will tell you that the best way to increase your life span is to quit smoking. The risk of contracting many different illnesses such as lung disease have been directly linked to smoking. Smoking also causes many dental problems. Smoking makes your teeth appear yellow and cause your breath to stink, but it can also lead to other more serious dental problems. Dr. Scharf a Long Island Periodontist encourages patients not to smoke as it is a significant risk factor for contracting periodontal disease. Reducing the amount that you smoke is a good start, but it does not solve the problem as there has been no major difference between someone who smokes a pack a day as opposed to someone who smokes only a few cigarettes a day. All that reducing smoking can do is reduce your risk by maybe 8% which is not very much.

A major problem is that smoking and Periodontal disease Long Island both put you at risk for some of the same illnesses such as circulatory problems that can lead to heart attacks and stroke. By eliminating the smoking you are reducing your direct risk for such health ailments. You are also reducing your risk indirectly by decreasing your chances of contracting gum diseases. The double risk caused by smoking with periodontal disease can be minimized by a proper dental regimen of brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, dental check ups and cleanings.

Proper dental care is only part of what must be done to significantly reduce your risk of contracting periodontal disease and other illnesses. The best way to greatly reduce your risk of not falling victim to any problems in the future is to take your doctor's advice and quit smoking and follow a proper dental hygiene regimen.

People who want to treat gum disease on Long Island should know that Periodontist Dr. David Scharf uses a laser rather than a scalpel to treat gum disease. To learn more about the Long Island Gum Laser call Dr. Scharf at 631-661-6633

Long Island Periodontist Uses a Laser to Treat Gum Disease

Long Island Periodontist Dr. David Scharf treat gum disease with a laser rather than a scalpel. Did you know that exposure to another individual with gum disease can put you at an increased risk to contract periodontal disease yourself.

Several studies have shown that periodontal disease can be transmitted from one person to another. Examples of transmission would be from one child to another, parent to child and parent to spouse. Long Island periodontist Dr. Scharf advises clients continually about their risk.

How is gum disease transmitted?

Bacteria is generated from pus and bleeding coming from infected gums. The pus or blood then mixes with the saliva in the mouth and can be transmitted to others. Transmission can be through direct contact such as kissing, eating after one another, or drinking after one another. Transmission can also be through the air by sneezing, coughing or simply breathing. Transmission usually only occurs when someone is around another for extended periods of time. It is very important to check in with your doctor if you are around someone constantly that either has periodontal disease or is at great risk to have periodontal disease.

There are certain steps that you can take to reduce your risk of contracting periodontal disease from those around you such as reduced exposure. The best idea if you feel you are at risk is to ensure you are practicing good oral hygiene.

Dr. David Scharf a Long Island Periodontist has the advanced training to diagnose and treat gum disease as conservatively as possible. Don't live with bleeding gums or spread gum disease germs to your loved ones. Treat gum disease on Long Island by calling Dr. Scharf today.

Treat Gum Disease by a Long Island Perodontist

Long Island Periodontist David Scharf reveals how to treat gm disase with a laser.

For those on Long island it is also recommended to visit Dr. Scharf to discuss your risk.

A Patients Experience with Laser Periodontal therapy versus Cut and Stitch Gum Surgery

<

visit us for more information on Laser Periodontal therapy on Long Island

Healthy Gums Healthy Heart by Long Island Periodontist Dr. David Scharf

Treating Periodontal Disease to Reduce Risk of Heart Problems

Do you eat healthy? Do you stay away from too much red meat, cholesterol and other risk factors for heart problems? Did you know that gum disease is something that you also need to avoid in order to not be at risk for heart problems?

A healthy circulatory system is necessary for survival. The heart is the key to making all of that work. Periodontal disease has been proven to negatively effect the functions of the heart. Periodontal disease has been shown to dump bacterial plaque into the blood stream. The plaque then builds up in blood vessels and inhibits the flow of blood through the blood vessels causing the blood stream to slow down, clog or clot. All of these can lead to a variety of problems in the circulatory system like heart attack, stroke, hardening of arteries and more.

There is no reason to be scared of having gum disease treated if you live on Long Island. Treatment with Long Island periodontist Dr. Scharf can perform a procedure using a laser rather than surgery to treat periodontal disease. It has been shown that in only six months after treatment, patients have better circulation and increased elasticity in blood vessels. Increasing the health of your circulation system not only puts you at less risk of fatal problems, but also helps to increase vigor. When your blood is able to flow through healthy vessels your body receives the oxygen it needs to work and play. You will feel energized and able to accomplish more. In other words treating Periodontal disease will greatly increase your quality of life.

If you have concerns about your risk for gum disease and are on Long Island you should visit us on the web. Information is available on the web site as well as contact information to set an appointment to see the periodontist. A good way to make sure you will not be at risk for periodontal disease would be through regular check ups and following a proper dental care regimen. People who followed through with regular check ups, cleanings and at home dental regimen were less at risk to have periodontal disease and therefore less at risk for heart problems.

Laser treats Gum Disease

Watch this video to see how the laser can be used to treat gum disease.

Dental Implants on Long Island To Hold A Lower Denture | Long Island Dental Implants

Dr. David Scharf (631)661-6633 Long Islands premier dental implant surgeon discusses dental implants to hold a lower denture.
Dental Implants To Hold A Lower Denture
View more presentations The study looked at chewing and levels of bacteria in the blood.

First, an introduction is in order.

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a bacterial infection that goes deep under the gums surrounding your teeth. The gums and bone around your teeth are fed by thousands of tiny blood vessels. Your periodontal bacteria goes into these capillaries and throughout your body.

This infectious bacteria adds to deposits on the blood vessel walls and can generally lower your immune system. It can also promote infections in other parts of your body. Research has found that patients with untreated periodontal disease are more likely to have other medical problems.

The 2002 study looked at 67 patients. Researchers found that 6% of periodontal patients had active toxins in their blood before chewing and 24% had active toxins in their blood after chewing. This put four times more harmful bacteria in the blood.

The more plaque and calculus that builds up around the teeth the worse it gets. The gum tissue lining periodontal pockets becomes ulcerated and allows these bacteria and toxins into the blood stream through the ulcers.

As more time passes between dental cleanings the buildup gets worse and the invasion of these harmful bacteria and toxins into the blood gets worse as well.

Having healthy gums, good oral hygiene and professional dental cleanings at the proper interval are your best defense.

To learn about treating gum disease with a laser visit LILaserperio.com

Warm regards

David Scharf

Causes of Gum Disease by Long Island Periodontist Dr. David Scharf

The main cause of periodontal (gum) disease is plaque, but other factors affect the health of your gums.

Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. However, factors like the following also affect the health of your gums.

Smoking/Tobacco Use
As you probably already know, tobacco use is linked with many serious illnesses such as cancer, lung disease and heart disease, as well as numerous other health problems. What you may not know is that tobacco users also are at increased risk for periodontal disease. In fact, recent studies have shown that tobacco use may be one of the most significant risk factors in the development and progression of periodontal disease.

Other contributing factors include genetics, women's issues, stress, medications, grinding, diabetes, poor nutrition and obesity. These will be covered in future posts.

If you have gum disease and want to treat it without sugery, consider laser periodontal therapy. The first phase or the active phase is designed to get your mouth healthy. The second phase or the maintenance phase is designed to keep your mouth healthy. Gum disease is s chronic disease. You can never be immune to it. But you can minimize the chances of it coming back. Studies have shown that periodontal treatment with maintenance is very effective at preserving ones teeth and dramatically reducing the incidence of tooth decay and gum disease recurrence. Studies have also shown that periodontal treatment without maintenance is of little value in the long run in preserving periodontal health.

Dr. Scharf is Long Island's premier periodontist. He treats gum disease with a laser and places dental implants in Babylon, Suffolk County NY.

Gum Disease and HIV

Study Links Acid Produced From Gum Disease With HIV

February 13, 2009

A recent study conducted by researchers in Japan found that an acid produced in the mouth because of gum disease might promote the progression of HIV, AFP/Yahoo! News reports. According to the researchers, the study, which will be published in the March issue of the Journal of Immunology, marks the first time a link has been discovered between gum disease and HIV, although previous research has linked gum disease with diabetes and heart disease. According to study author Kuniyasu Ochiai of Nihon University, butyric acid -- produced by a group of bacteria that causes periodontal disease --hinders an enzyme called HDAC, which blocks HIV from proliferating. Takashi Okamoto, molecular biology professor in central Japan's Nagoya City University, and Kenichi Imai, a research assistant at the university, also participated in the study.

Through in-vitro experiments, the researchers found that HIV quickly proliferated in two kinds of immune system-related cells after they were given culture fluid containing the gum disease-causing bacteria and butyric acid. Ochiai said, "Serious periodontal disease could lead to the development (of AIDS) among HIV-positive people ... although the probability largely depends on individual physical strength." He adds that there are "fears that even those [who] were unaware that they had contracted HIV could develop the epidemic once they have periodontal disease." The research team intends to confirm their finding in animal tests, Ochiai said (AFP/Yahoo! News, 2/11).

How is Laser Periodontal Therapy different from Conventional Periodontal Therapy?

What's different about LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY™?
LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY™ uses a special kind of laser called the PerioLase®, invented by two dentists in Cerritos, California. Dr. Robert Gregg and Dr. Delwin McCarthy spent years developing a better way to treat gum disease. The laser fiber, which is only about as wide as a couple of human hairs, is inserted between the gum tissue and your tooth, where it painlessly removes the noxious elements that cause gum disease.

How many treatments will I need?
LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY™ doesn't take much time at all -- just two two-hour sessions versus eight to ten one-hour sessions with surgery. You don't have to worry about bleeding, stitches or post-treatment infection, because your gums haven't been cut.
                 What about recovery - will I be in pain or need to follow a special routine?
The sense of recovery is immediate, due to the laser’s ability to seal blood vessels, lymphatics and nerve endings. Of course, your tissue needs time to recover, regenerate and heal over the course of time, but after LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY™, you can drive your car, go back to work, or do anything else you like.

Long Island Periodontist David Scharf offers conservative periodontal treatment with the Gum laser in Babylon New York.

Smoking and Periodontal Disease

Long Island Periodontist David Scharf brings you this on smoking and periodontal disease

Smoking and periodontal disease:
Surprising as it may sound, many smokers need to be made more aware of the dangers of tobacco use. In fact, just 29 percent of smokers say they believe themselves to be at an above-average risk for heart attack compared with their nonsmoking peers, according to a study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association in March of 1999.

Obviously, while information about the medical problems associated with smoking – such as lung disease, cancer, heart disease and low-birth-weight infants – is widely available, many smokers seem to have tuned out.

If you are a smoker who is concerned about the effects smoking can have on your health, congratulations! By accessing information about the negative impacts of tobacco use, you are taking the first step toward quitting.

To increase awareness of the dangers of smoking, the American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout every year in November. Americans are encouraged to quit smoking for a day or to encourage someone else to quite for a day. The idea is to help someone be smoke-free for a day in hopes of motivating that person to quit forever

Recent studies have shown that tobacco use may be one of the most significant risk factors in the development and progression of periodontal disease Long Island. In addition, following periodontal treatment or any type of oral surgery, the chemicals in tobacco can slow down the healing process and make the treatment results less predictable.

How does smoking increase your risk for periodontal disease? As a smoker, you are more likely than nonsmokers to have the following problems:

* Calculus – plaque that hardens on your teeth and can only be removed during a professional cleaning
* Deep pockets between your teeth and gums
* Loss of the bone and tissue that support your teeth

If the calculus is not removed during a professional cleaning, and it remains below your gum line, the bacteria in the calculus can destroy your gum tissue and cause your gums to pull away from your teeth. When this happens, periodontal pockets form and fill with disease-causing bacteria.

If left untreated, periodontal disease will progress. The pockets between your teeth and gums can grow deeper, allowing in more bacteria that destroy tissue and supporting bone. As a result, the gums may shrink away from the teeth making them look longer. Without treatment, your teeth may become loose, painful and even fall out.

Save Your Smile

Research shows that smokers loose more teeth than nonsmokers do. In fact, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about 20 percent of people over age 65 who have never smoked are toothless, while a whopping 41.3 percent of daily smokers over age 65 are toothless.

In addition, research shows that current smokers don’t heal as well after periodontal treatment as former smokers or nonsmokers. But these effects are reversible if the smokers kick the habit before beginning treatment.

Not Just Cigarettes

Other tobacco products are also harmful to your periodontal health. Smokeless tobacco also can cause gums to recede and increase the chance of losing the bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place.

And, a study of cigar and pipe smokers published in the January 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association revealed that cigar smokers experience tooth loss and alveolar bone loss at rates equivalent to those of cigarette smokers. Pipe smokers experience tooth loss at a rate similar to cigarette smokers.

Other Oral Problems
Researches also have found that the following problems occur more often in people who use tobacco products:

* Oral cancer
* Bad breath
* Stained teeth
* Tooth loss
* Bone  loss
* Loss of taste
* Less success with periodontal treatment
* Less success with dental implants
* Gum recession
* Mouth sores
* Facial  wrinkling
if you have been thinking about sstopping smoking now is the time. Good luck

Periodontal inflammation may be linked to Alzheimer’s risk

Exposure to inflammation early in life from ailments such as chronic periodontal disease quadruples an individual's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, researchers reported at the first Alzheimer's Association International Conference on Prevention of Dementia.

The research team sifted through data on the 20,000 participants in the Swedish Twin Registry and found 109 "discordant" pairs of twins in which only one twin had been diagnosed with dementia.

Previous studies have shown that Alzheimer's disease is strongly genetic; if one twin has the disease, his or her identical twin has a 60 percent chance of developing it.

Information about participants' education, activities and health histories came from surveys they completed in the 1960s, when the registry was created, as well as from hospital discharge records. The surveys included questions about loose or missing teeth. Researchers used the answers to the dental-related questions to build a crude indicator of periodontal disease.

They concluded that an inflammatory burden early in life, as represented by chronic periodontal disease, might have severe consequences later.

"If what we’re indexing with periodontal disease is some kind of inflammatory burden, then it is probably speaking to general health conditions," said lead researcher Dr. Margaret Gatz from the University of Southern California.

If the link between inflammation and periodontal disease is confirmed, researchers said it would add inflammatory burden to the short list of preventable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.

Many people delay treating gum disease they do not want gum surgery. Laser periodontal therapy can treat gum disease without surgery. If you need a Long Island Periodontist call Dr. Scharf at (631)661-6633. In it she mentions how elevated levels of a marker called C reactive protein is a significant risk factor for heart attack. She also discusses the effect of periodontal or gum inflammation has on health. Studies in the periodontal literature have shown over and over again that if you take a patient with periodontal disease and high levels of C reactive protein and treat their periodontal disease the levels of C reactive protein reduce. Wow. The mouth really is attached to the rest of the body. The old thinking was that neglecting the teeth only resulted in a loss of teeth. The new reality is that neglecting the mouth may result in loss of days of your life!! I have copied the whole article below for you. Stay warm and Happy New Year.
