Turnpike Troubadours "A Cat In The Rain" Album Review

The long awaited new album from Turnpike Troubadours has arrived and hits heavy in every musical aspect. It's been 6 years since new music was released and a lot of professional and personal upheavals have taken place in between. The experiences in that time frame shape what is "A Cat In The Rain."

Turnpike's success and creativity is borne out of what each band member brings to the table, a force of a unique sound that can't be described, other than a mashup of Red Dirt, country, bluegrass, and folk. The group is comprised of Hank Early on accordion and steel guitar, R.C. Edwards on bass, Ryan Engleman on guitar, Evan Felker on lead vocals, guitar, and harmonica, Kyle Nix on fiddle, and Gabe Pearson on drums. The blend of melodies, instruments, vocals, and lyrics is always fresh on their new albums yet feels lived in, as if this band has been around one's entire life. The lived in feel is part of what makes TT special, lyrically deeper than traditional country music yet the familiar tone of yesteryear.

Kicking off the collection and first single is the ominous "Mean Old Sun." This sets the stage for the rest of the excellence to come but it's not all rumination and darkness. "Brought Me" is a hypnotic, bouncy song brimming with metaphors. It feels like the band is proclaiming their appreciation for the fans sticking by them through their hiatus.

The lyrical mystique rolls on into the next composition as listeners are introduced to a new name in the TT line of characters that reoccur from time to time. "Lucille" is a brooding ballad about a couple who seem to be plucked out of "The Great Gatsby." The lyrics are rather cryptic so listeners may interpret the song to fit other eras but it comes across as a flapper generation illicit love triangle. Maybe Lucille isn't a character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous book, but possibly an ancestor of Lorrie who has her own stories to tell in numerous other TT songs ("The Mercury," "Good Lord Lorrie," "The Housefire").

The real meat of the record lies within the next two tracks "The Rut" and the title track. The former is a trancelike, haunting ballad full of raw emotion. "Early fall descended on the dry back country aspens...It could be any time now that the bulls start bugling...I watched the pack mule panniers, see the loads are riding even...Is it in my mind or did I finally hear one sing..." Love at first listen, the guitar intro is lush, leading into achingly poetic autobiographical lyrics about sobriety, hunting, and finding oneself. Overflowing with symbols, the mountains are not just the scenic ones, but of relationships and band members that "are all still standing there." Turnpike has never really turned out a bad song but if there are certain standouts in an artist's body of work, this is one of them.

The title track "A Cat In The Rain" is likely TT's most lyrically brilliant and one of their finest to date. The storyline takes on a string of life events in a delightful 5 minutes and 17 seconds, throwing the pieces together like leaves in the wind. Melodically rambling in the best way, the chorus flows like a river "...You can try to put the past behind...it's on your clothes like burning pine...Is it gin or turpentine you keep in your canteen...If pressure makes a diamond, babe, I still might come out clean..." Closing with "...There's black mud on the belly of the yellow colt I ride...Never thought I'd catch myself so calm out in the open...As a gulf storm deals in bucket loads...And hits from every side." Felker's delivery is optimistic despite the turbulence on this epic, career-defining song.

Felker contributed 6 of the album's 10 songs as solo writes (the other being "East Side Love Song"), rounding out the rest are from Edwards and Lance Roark on the fantastic, hard driving "Chipping Mill", former member John Fullbright on "Three More Days," and covers of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' "Black Sky" and Jerry Jeff Walker's understated ballad "Won't You Give Me One More Chance." The latter closes out this collection on a gentle note, as if signaling the end of the turmoil and chaos from the past several years.

Fans were left wondering if new music would ever be created again; this feels like a rebirth from a band who epitomizes Red Dirt music. From the excellent musicianship to the production to the lyrical prowess; front to back "A Cat In The Rain" is a masterpiece.

"A Reason To Be" Book Review

Norman McCombs' fast moving, exciting new novel covers a wide swath of time between 15th century Scotland to present day New York City. It starts in the Scottish Highlands where readers learn about how warriors defended their land and families. We then meet the star of the book, Douglas McCombs, from New York City, where the story is woven in with past tales of his ancestors. Douglas' saga was the most heartfelt, going from a millionaire who has it all to being so depressed, he doesn't want to show up in life.

Many times while reading, authors will jump back and forth between the past and present and it can be bothersome. Not so with "A Reason To Be," it feels like flipping through a photo album. McCombs' no nonsense glimpses into the past are stark at times, but shows how the family conquered and made paths forward.

Anyone who loves ancestry and learning about where they came from will thoroughly enjoy this. Maybe it'll lead those who've been interested in learning about their own family history to journey back in time.

"Dancing Through Life" Book Review

Allen T. Brown's remarkable new book "Dancing Through Life" is a journey of self-discovery and learning how to live life to the fullest. A true gem in the plethora available on the subject, Brown has written what may be the best book of the year. The simplistic approach to his suggestions sprinkled with personal stories capture how we should be living our lives.

Brown grew up on a farm in Michigan and had dreams beyond his little town. He ended up in Colorado and California, spending $12 to make $30 million through a commercial laundry business and real estate ventures. He ended up becoming a ballroom dancer in his 80's and competing. Brown knows that no matter what, people can achieve their dreams from starting with very little.

"Dancing Through Life" hits on all the things we should be doing that we WANT to do. As adults, we've forgotten to have fun. We live by the rules society tells us, not by the inner beat all of us have. Brown lays out lists of exercises; some will have readers do a lot of soul searching. There are also nuggets of wisdom like " It's time to start questioning every belief you've ever taught and what you have always assumed" and "You deserve to achieve your goals and your dreams. Believing this is the first step."

Brown manages to hit a lot of nerves with this insightful book. Readers will take away many reasons to start living their lives instead of just surviving.

January saw the release of Cody Johnson's "Ain't Nothin' To It," his first on a major label and fifth album to date. Artists transitioning from indie to mainstream often lose their sound, however, Johnson is as solid as country gold. Top tracks include "Fence Posts," "Understand Why," "Where Cowboys Are King," "Dear Rodeo," and the stunning "Monday Morning Merle."

"Girl" dropped in March from powerhouse Texas vocalist and songwriter Maren Morris. The title track and lead single anthem lit an emotional fire that burned all the way to the top of the country charts in August. Despite being a mostly pop collection, music is beautiful in that it can move us regardless of genre. Morris manages to balance that sentiment well with standouts "Common" (with Brandi Carlile), "Gold Love," "Great Ones," and "Good Woman."

As summer faded into fall, it was with great anticipation The Highwomen released their self-titled debut. Every song is a knockout, a rarity these days as many artists rely on singles to propel their careers. Each member of the band has a unique voice and blended together, it's pure magic. November brought the return of Miranda Lambert with the raucous and infectious "Wildcard." Lambert has always been a little bit country with a side of rock and roll and she straddles the fence once again with 14 tunes that are unexpected but refreshing. Best Albums of 2018

2018 was quite a year for brilliant albums, ranging from Americana to traditional country and a bit of everything in between, there's something for everyone. This year's releases are a long time coming, a sonic pleasure every single time they're played.

February saw the release of Courtney Patton's marvelous third album "What It's Like To Fly Alone." Start to finish, this album is full of lush country ballads, shuffles, and heartbreaking lyrics. Patton's often plaintive vocals make the songs believable and cut directly to the heart. A voice that needs to be heard outside of the Texas scene, Patton is a torchbearer for modern country music. Standouts include the title track, "This Road To You," "Words To My Favorite Memory," and personal favorite "Round Mountain." Read the full review here.

Kacey Musgraves released her third major label album on March 30, a surprising mix of genres that is pleasing and easy on the ears. Never quite leaving country but exploring pop and blues, the songs each live in their own zip codes. Musgraves has a penchant for songs that are heavy but never sound as such, even with her broadening into pop territory. Favorite tracks include "High Horse," "Happy And Sad," "Space Cowboy," "Slow Burn," and the title track.

May saw the release of Red Dirt veterans Jason Boland & The Stragglers' stellar "Hard Times Are Relative." The ninth studio album is another in their mission to carry the torch for traditional country music yet listeners will hear this is more than regular fare. Boland and company often write songs that offer social commentary and doses of harsh reality, something that's sadly lacking on mainstream radio. Top tracks include "I Don't Deserve You," "Do You Remember When," "Going, Going, Gone," "Predestined," and the phenomenal title track.

Kenny Chesney released his 17th studio album on July 27 "Songs For The Saints." A beautifully written and sung production, every tune weaves a story with an island vibe and that's no accident. 100% of the proceeds benefit Love For Love City Relief Fund to aid in recovery of the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. "Saints" is somewhat of a departure for Chesney, there is a maturity and depth not heard on previous outings. It's refreshing when a seasoned artist decides to do such an introspective collection, it allows for expansion into other genres such as Americana and Reggae. Key tracks include the first hit single "Get Along," "Ends Of The Earth," "Island Rain," "Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season" (with Jimmy Buffett), "Better Boat" (with Mindy Smith), and the title cut.

Jason Eady's "I Travel On" dropped in August and possibly his best to date. A heady mix of pedal steel, fiddle, and Eady's plaintive vocals (along with wife Courtney Patton's lovely harmonies) warmly envelop the lyrics. The music feels comfortable, like a worn in saddle, perhaps because Eady's style is straight up country. Some of the tunes feel like they could've been sung in the 70's and 80's but with modern content. Top tracks are "I Lost My Mind In Carolina," "Calaveras County," "She Had To Run," and the title cut.

Autumn is usually a release heavy season for records and this year was no exception. The Black Lillies dropped their remarkable new set on September 28. "Stranger To Me" is their fifth album and marks a slight departure from their typically bluegrass/country style. "Stranger" is full of edgier rock fare but still keeping in line with the Americana sound the band is known for. Lyrical depth abounds on this collection, story songs take a backseat this time for darker, enigmatic strains. It's hard to choose a favorite but some of the sublime tracks include "River Rolls," "Weighting," "Midnight Stranger," and "Ten Years."

"What It's Like To Fly Alone" Album Review

"What It's Like To Fly Alone" is Courtney Patton's much-anticipated third album and continues in the traditional country vein as her previous outings. Rich with lush instruments and Patton's strong vocals and songwriting, the album is sure to be one of the best of the year.

The collection was solely produced by Patton and features five solo writing credits, as well as six co-writes. Backing Patton up instrumentally on this project were Jerry Abrams on bass guitar, Chip Bricker on piano, Giovanni Carnuccio on drums and percussion, Lloyd Maines on pedal & lap steel, electric guitar, dobro, mandolin, and acoustic guitar, Heather Stalling on fiddle, and harmony vocals by Dan Tyminski (on "Shove"), and fellow Texas artists Kensie Coppen and Jamie Lin Wilson.

Kicking off the album is the Bluegrass number "Shove" and it sets the tone for the rest of the songs. Grief, happiness, loneliness, and every other emotion in between is felt within the lyrics. The title track languishes in Patton's plaintive vocals, "...A hawk flew from my blind side and for a moment it was us...I was feeling winded, he was waiting on a gust...I stayed the course, he flew right, into the field, into the dusk...Still I know what it's like to fly alone..."

The absolute standout of the collection is the melancholy story song "Round Mountain." It follows the life of a woman who married too young and fell into another man's arms, abandoning her family. The character seems to have no remorse for her behavior, "...I won't stay be be ashamed of the things I know I've done..." The song conjures up images of 1800's Appalachia with Patton's matter-of-fact heartbreaking narrative and the ominous fiddle arrangement.

On the barroom weeper "I've Got One Waiting," the singer seems to have given up on love and has turned to aged beverages for answers. Meanwhile, the lovely pedal steel driven "Devil's Hand" sounds like it could be the sequel to "Round Mountain." "Gold Standard" sounds like it came right out of the 1960's with its lavish fiddle and steel. The only song not written by Patton, Kelley Mickwee and Owen Temple capture the rise and fall of the "perfect" couple.

Another stellar track is "This Road To You," a mid-tempo traveling song written by Patton and Micky Braun. Everything about this song is perfect, from the melody to the numerous geographical references. Mandolin and fiddle wrap around Patton's voice, "...This road to you is winding, steep, and cold...this road to you made of concrete, gray, and gold..."

Patton has a knack for sorrowful yet gorgeous lyrics and two of the saddest songs are "Red Bandana Blue," a tribute to fallen local music hero, Kent Finlay, and "Fourteen Years." The latter about Patton's sister will bring tears & choked back emotions. It's a beautiful piano driven tune and is perfect for closing out the album, albeit heavy hearted.

The album cover is Patton's own photo, the twisted trees and prairie grasses a snapshot of the scenes portrayed in the songs on this stunning album. "What It's Like To Fly Alone" is available now on CD, vinyl, and digital.

"A Long Way From Your Heart" is the Turnpike Troubadours' fifth album and quite possibly their best yet. The Oklahoma band draws deep into regional subject matter and characters come to life with their brand of Americana. TpT are comprised of RC Edwards on bass and harmony, Ryan Engleman on electric guitar, Evan Felker on lead vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, and banjo, Kyle Nix on fiddle and harmony, and Gabriel Pearson on drums, percussion, and harmony. Hank Early recently joined on accordion, pedal, and dobro, filling out the already rich melodies of the band.

Kicking off the album is the lead single "The Housefire," a song as much about the human spirit as a house fire. Listeners familiar with Turnpike's music will recognize Lorrie, a character from two other songs, stemming from the imagination of principal songwriter Evan Felker. It's love at first listen, with Lorrie grabbing the baby and "...We made it safe outside...She never missed a note...Took a breath and cleared her throat...and wrapped him in a Carhartt coat she found out in my ride..." There's a lot of heartache heard in the character's voice but also a buoyant tone knowing it all works out. Felker has a way of weaving an entire movie into song, the lyrics are so vivid making the characters come to life.

"The Winding Stair Mountain Blues" is a standout track featuring blazing fiddle and banjo. The storyline revolves around two childhood friends who drift apart when one falls into trouble. He appears to be living off the land in the Winding Stair Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma until the law catches up with him. This is Felker at his best, blasting through the song with fervor, driving the message home.

"Unrung" deals with a friend who's concerned about his friend's choice in women. It doesn't cover new ground but its lush melody and instruments wrap around the gloom of the relationship. Meanwhile, "A Tornado Warning" bounces along as if there isn't an impending twister nearby. It's as much about the girl as it is an actual storm, she's the tornado in his heart.

There's a warm tone that permeates the collection but culminates with the sad yet lovely "Pay No Rent." A heavy ballad featuring beautiful harmony vocals from Jamie Lin Wilson, this is perhaps the saddest song of the year. "...Is all this living meant to be or a happy accident..." sums up our short lives on Earth, leaving listeners in a pensive state.

"The Hard Way" is a straight ahead, 80's country mid-tempo romp through the back roads of Oklahoma. If a perfect song existed for a model of what modern country music should sound like, this would be it. A drifting cowboy who's "...On the road again off of Highway 10 in a cabin on a rural route...I'm gonna figure out the hard way how fast I can wear my welcome out..." Everything about this song is sublime, from the opening pedal steel and fiddle to the high flying character tumbling around in Felker's poetic warble.

Another outstanding track is "Pipe Bomb Dream," about a military veteran who hits trouble when he's caught smuggling marijuana into his home state. Staying in the band's home state, "Oklahoma Stars" switches gears into another pretty ballad featuring Wilson again on harmony vocals.

"Sunday Morning Paper" closes the album with a stark clarity about our musical legends leaving us too soon. "Sunday morning paper said 'Rock and Roll is surely dead'...something hit me deep down in my soul...Lord I know, it's just Rock and Roll...never one time did I ever dream you wouldn't live forever...bet you never planned on getting old..." The music world has lost so many iconic artists over the past few years, including Merle Haggard, who's subtly mentioned along with many others. Music evokes so many images and dreams and is personal on many levels. When one of our favorites is no longer with us, we feel a loss others may not understand. That's the true power and beauty of music and is a nice ode to close the album with.

For those who are on the fence about downloading or buying the physical CD (or vinyl), I highly recommend the physical copy. The curious horse artwork is worth that alone and there's something to be said about the lyrics inserted into the CD. There's a personal touch one doesn't get from digital.

"Ruffled Skirts" Album Review

John Schneider's brand new album "Ruffled Skirts" was born from heartache and triumph over Louisiana's historic flooding in 2016. Having released over a dozen albums, this is the singer's first in over 20 years (not including 2 Christmas works). Schneider has been out of the musical spotlight, focusing on acting, directing, producing, and opening a production studio in the Bayou state.

"Ruffled Skirts" opens with a sampling of the gospel standard "In The Shelter" before transitioning into the hard driving "The Cajun Navy." This sets the tone for the remainder of the album, songs full of devastation and hope, and the characters who prevailed. The Cajun Navy are volunteers who lent a helping hand during the flooding and this honors their time and commitment.

A personal favorite is "Too Much Rain," a heavy ballad marked with Schneider's warm honeyed tenor. The most powerful line comes on the bridge "...She told me she was going to get in her car and go where it never rains..." The heartache felt in those lines haunts the rest of the song, leaving the listener wondering if she made it to her destination.

Another standout is "The FEMA Song," a kiss off song dedicated to the government agency was recorded live. The lyrics add to the sentiment of the raucous crowd, and Schneider's vocals really shine here.

Probably the saddest song listeners will hear this year is "How Do You Stop The Water." The ballad revolves around a man who's lost everything in the flood, "...Over 60 years of memories that just washed away..." Thoughts of his wife and children who lived in the same house gone, along with all of the cherished belongings.

"Goin' With The Flow," "Five Feet High And Risin'" (a Johnny Cash cover), and "An Act Of God" round out the album's main subject matter, the latter being another outstanding ballad.

"Every Friday Night" is the only tune that doesn't deal with the tragic events of last year's flooding. It's a fun romp about a boy who grew up on "The Dukes Of Hazzard." It's a nice diversion from the heaviness of the rest of collection.

"Ruffled Skirts" was recorded in Schneider's living room, part of what was damaged in the floods, and adds to the rawness of the lyrics. The songs were co-written with Clifton Brown, Scott Innes, and Phil Redrow. The Cajun Navy band consists of a stellar cast including Carol Bersas, Nelson Blanchard, Randy Carpenter, Bud Carson, Mark DuVelle Doyle, Margaret Fowler, Tammy Watts Hardy, Doug Kershaw, Lauren, Valerie, and Olivia Powell, and Jo-El Sonnier.

"How Do You Stop The Water" and "Every Friday Night" have been released to radio. The album is available now, go get a copy and treat your ears to real country music.

"Hotel California" Turns 40

On this day in 1976, the iconic Eagles album "Hotel California" was released. The followup to the band's previous four successful collections became one of their biggest sellers, over 32 million copies sold worldwide.

Much of the success of HC is centered on the title song & lead cut. However, almost the entire album is filled with masterpieces, from their signature country rock sound to one that's more edgy, there's a reason why this resonated with so many fans and continues to this day. In addition to the amazing guitar solos on the title track and other songs, is the core of the band's success, lyrics and stunning vocals. At the time of HC's recording & release, the members were founders Glenn Frey (vocals, piano, keyboards, harmonica, guitars), Don Henley (vocals, drums, guitar), and Randy Meisner (vocals, bass guitar) as well as Joe Walsh (vocals, lead guitar, keyboards) and Don Felder (lead guitar). The powerhouse songwriting duo of Frey and Henley dominates the lyrically visual songs, a continuum of their stellar compositions from previous albums. This collection is very much a concept album like 1973's "Desperado" but HC is a study in California's night life, addiction, fame, relationships, and environmental issues.

"Hotel California" is perhaps one of the most debated songs in history, its subject matter being all over the map depending on the listener. It opens with one of the most recognizable guitar intros in rock music but it's Henley's haunting voice that steals the show.

"New Kid In Town" is the only song Frey sings lead on here and is a beautiful study in relationships and the fleeting nature of fame. The song is about a woman who moves on to the next "Johnny come lately," and also mirrors the music business where the next big act is always waiting to take over. Frey's stunning vocals on the bridge drives the message home. Written by Frey, Henley, and J.D. Souther, the song took home a Grammy in 1977 for Best Vocal Arrangement, was the first single off the album, and hit number one in February 1977.

Also a single, "Life In The Fast Lane" chronicles a couple who spiral downwards in their drug-fueled, high living lifestyle. Walsh came up with the guitar intro, Frey and Henley wrote the lyrics around that signature riff. Dire lyrics and emptiness abound despite the frenetic pace of the arrangement. It feels as if the couple is driving off the cliff long before they reach it.

"Wasted Time" is a gorgeous, melancholy filled ballad, one of Henley's finest vocal moments on HC. Another Frey and Henley composition, the lyrics are heavy with emotion, "...So you live from day to day...and you dream about tomorrow...and the hours go by like minutes...and the shadows come to stay...so you take a little something to make them go away..."

Eagles fans know the backstory to "Victim Of Love" but despite the Felder/Henley controversy on who ended up singing lead, Henley owns the song. It's a classic, in your face snarl about a woman who's disenchanted by every relationship yet knows "how to play it so well."

"Pretty Maids All In A Row" features Joe Walsh on lead vocals and Randy Meisner's fine "Try And Love Again" round out the variety on HC leading up to the stunning finale.

The album closes with the epic, sweeping ballad "The Last Resort." Relevant at the time of its release and even more so today, the song looks at the destruction humans have inflicted upon the Earth. Another Frey and Henley penned gem, the song takes listeners on a journey from innocence to greed, urban sprawl, and despair, "...You call some place paradise...kiss it goodbye..." Always excelling on ballads, Henley's vocals reach every level on this prophetic song.

"Hotel California" won the 1977 Grammy for Record Of The Year, cementing its place in rock and roll history, as well as in the hearts of millions of fans across the globe. If music lovers are looking for "new" music to buy, start here and buy the physical copy. The artwork on the cover and the photos inside are as fabulous as the art flowing out of the speakers.

"Sunset Motel" Album Review

Reckless Kelly's 9th studio album "Sunset Motel" bolts out of the gate with the rollicking "How Can You Like Him," just a hint of what's to come on the much-anticipated release. It's been a long span between this and 2013's lovely "Long Night Moon" and it does not disappoint.

Reckless Kelly is comprised of David Abeyta on lead guitars, Cody Braun on fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, and harmony vocals, Willy Braun on lead/harmony vocals, guitars, and harmonica, Joe Miller on bass, and Jay Nazz on drums. The collection was recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin, Texas, and brings a new warmth to RK's sound. Perhaps it's the change in studios (RK hasn't recorded at Arlyn since their debut) or the depth of the content. There's a quiet maturity felt in the lyrics (all penned by Willy Braun), the harmonies are perfect, and the instruments are classic clean and crisp RK.

"Radio" opens up with the singer flipping channels, most likely trying to find a station that plays good music but the song itself delves into the dark and disenchanting world known as mainstream radio. The first line says it all in regards to the sad state of modern country music, "Come all you young lads with your trucker chain fads...and your hair just beginning to grow...Well you got a good look and that's all it took to get you booked on the next big show..." It has a biting tone and rocking guitar riffs, driving the message home about how "artists" are made.

"Radio" segues into one of many standouts "Buckaroo," a mid-tempo modern day cowboy's lament about losing a love. Meanwhile, the title track is a lovely yet sad ballad about the trials about addiction. The motel is a symbol of all things bad and good that we encounter on the road of life. The foreboding sound of the guitars sets the stage for the eerie lyrics "...Four walls to hold me...locked up inside...where the same thing that kills you is what keeps you alive...no hope for redemption, no safe place to fall...just a paradise waiting to escape from it all..."

Switching gears from the loneliness of "Sunset Motel," "The Champ is a knockout track about a relationship set to a sport and Wild West theme. "...High noon and we're standing on Main Street...all or nothing and there's no backing out...no second thoughts about a reputation...just clear leather and the hammer comes down..." The song rolls along to a fabulous mandolin beat and despite the cheery sound, neither party truly comes out as a champ. This is a true RK classic and is now a new favorite.

Other standouts include "One More One Last Time," a lush, harmonica driven ballad and "Volcano," a climate change rocker. The latter has a big chorus and some harsh lyrics regarding the state of this very polarizing issue. "Sad Songs About You" is an honest, raw look at a crumbled relationship and how the singer is going to cope with singing the songs the rest of his life. "Under Lucky Stars" quietly closes out the collection, a truly romantic song not often heard from the band.

There's something to be said about the exquisite album artwork and enclosed CD booklet. It includes a map of the USA and a special motel room key that unlocks more phrases and photos across the map. It has a retro look, making the listener feel as if they're along for a ride back in time; which ties into the lyrics of this fine album. Reckless Kelly has released another solid set of songs to cap off their 20th year in the business, go buy this album and let your ears enjoy the journey.

Corey Nolen "Following The Song" EP Review

Corey Nolen's new EP Following The Song is a pleasant journey through relationships, the music business, and the trappings of the road. The six- song collection flows nicely from traditional country into more Americana territory with Nolen possessing a tear in his voice that wraps around every song, filling it with heartbreak and longing.

The album kicks off with "Missing You Tonight," a mid-tempo song driven by prominent fiddle that segues into what's probably the best on the EP, the bittersweet title track. The singer laments "....Now that the money's all gone, I guess I'm in it for love...'Cause I don't think they'll hear my voice on the radio..." This gem is exactly what we need to hear on country radio.

"Not Fighting" is an achingly sad duet with Ashley Spurling, where, as the years go by, they question their relationship and they realize they're just going through the motions of everyday life. "...It ain't the hurting we had...but it's a new kind of sad..." Spurling's sweet vocals add a heavy dose of poignancy to the ballad.

Closing out the EP is "The Road," a lonely, pedal steel weeper that follows the singer on his way down the road and back to his "broken home." "Lately waking up it's hard to know what town I'm in....Just moving at the mercy of whatever pays the bills..."  The backdrop of the steel makes the song feel even sadder than it is - true country music at its finest.

The Alabama native has released three other albums, including a live EP which was released earlier this year. Following The Song will be available August 14.

In Memoriam Of Glenn Frey: A Fan Tribute

Shock. Disbelief. Sadness. Denial. All emotions felt when I heard the news that Eagles founder Glenn Frey had passed away at the age of 67 on Monday, January 18, 2016. As a lifetime Eagles fan, this loss of a legend has been a hard fact to swallow. Frey had recently finished up a tour with the band in July. How can this happen to someone so young?

Crushing sadness aside, the Eagles have been a huge influence on my musical tastes. Their music, along with dozens of other bands in the same vein, have been riding shotgun with me as long as I can remember. Frey's warm, smooth tenor was always right for every song, belting out country rockers and lovely ballads, he was always able to make fans feel something. Not just a fine singer, Frey also was an incredible songwriter. Written with band mate Don Henley, "Desperado" is the most epic, sweeping ballad of our time. Frey also helped pen the biggest hit of the Eagles' career "Hotel California," among many other favorites, including "Lyin' Eyes," "Take It Easy," and " Tequila Sunrise."

Along with the success of the Eagles, after the split in 1980, Frey continued on with a remarkable solo career. Tunes such as "The Heat Is On" and "You Belong To The City" were big hits in the 80's. Frey also starred in a few films and TV shows, most notably "Miami Vice" and in his own show "South Of Sunset." The Eagles reunited in 1994, embarking on a tour, then again dropping out of the spotlight until the release of a double album "Long Road Out Of Eden" in 2007. Frey released his last solo album in 2012.

The country rock sound they forged has left an indelible mark on myself, along with millions of other fans around the world. Without a doubt, there was more music left to be made. Glenn Frey was an icon for the ages and will be greatly missed. A legend of a generation, gone too soon.

The Best Albums of 2015

2015 has seen an excellent year in Americana and country music album releases, including many of my favorite artists. The selections range from industry veterans to newer artists, all having had a banner year in critical or commercial success.

Jason Boland & The Stragglers released their latest "Squelch" on October 9th. A study in social and political issues, the band's eighth studio album delivers a heavy dose of reality, punctuated with pedal steel and fiddle throughout. An exquisite example of what modern country music should be, intelligent, hard hitting lyrics and heartfelt vocals. Standout tracks include "Bienville," "Heartland Bypass," "Holy Relic Sale," "The First To Know," and "Break 19."

One of the best of this year came from the April release of Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers' collaboration "Hold My Beer Vol. I." Beginning to end, this album is a wonderful listen, richly steeped in pedal steel, fiddle, and impeccable harmonies. Favorite cuts are "Til It Does," "In My Next Life," "Standards," and "El Dorado."

June saw the release of "So This Is Life" by Courtney Patton. This album is about as perfect as a traditional country album can get. Full of heartbreaking lyrics, lovely instruments, and Patton's beautiful voice, every song is a story brought to life in stark detail. Favorites are the title cut, "Little Black Dress," "War Of Art," "Need For Wanting," "Twelve Days," "Killing Time," and "But I Did."

Jamie Lin Wilson released her first full length solo album in May. "Holidays & Wedding Rings" is a captivating journey in heartbreak, cheating, murder, and love. Wilson's honeyed vocals soar on favorites "Just Like Heartache," "Yours & Mine," "Moving Along," You Left My Chair," and the stunning duet with Wade Bowen "Just Some Things."

The Turnpike Troubadours released their fourth album, self-titled, in September. Continuing where "Goodbye Normal Street" left off in 2012, the band has a unique country/bluegrass/Americana sound with smart lyrics. Standouts include "Ringing In The Year," "The Mercury," "Long Drive Home," "Fall Out Of Love," and the revamped version of "Easton & Main."

August saw the release of Lindi Ortega's fourth album "Faded Gloryville." Always lush on vocals and instruments, "Faded" offers a glance at the downtrodden, which seems to be a theme running through this collection. Favorites include the title track, "Ashes," I Ain't The Girl," and " Someday Soon."

The Black Lillies released their highly anticipated fourth CD in October. "Hard To Please" is breathtaking in places, soaring on heartbreak and murder ballads, as well as tender love songs. Favorite tracks include "That's The Way It Goes Down," "The First Time," "Bound To Roam," "Dancin'," "Desire," and the title track.

October also saw the release of Corb Lund's "Things That Can't Be Undone." Possibly Lund's finest album to date, the songs range from the comical to the serious regarding war, ranching, and loss. This album should resonate with fans more than ever, considering there's a new maturity to the music. Standouts include "Weight Of The Gun," "Run This Town," "Sadr City," "S Lazy H," and "Goodbye Colorado."

Kacey Musgraves' second major label album "Pageant Material" dropped in June. Another heavy hitting collection of songs full of humor and small town themes, Musgraves never fails to surprise with an array of subjects. "Pageant" has a very retro sound, as if it could have been recorded 40 years ago, yet the modern characters in the songs keep it squarely in 2015. Favorite tracks include "Dime Store Cowgirl," "This Town," "Good Ol' Boys Club," and the title cut.

Honorable mentions for releases this year are Aaron Watson's "The Underdog" which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart, a feat for an indie artist. Released in February, Watson continues on his mission of delivering solid, honky tonk country. Don Henley released a fabulous country album in September. "Cass County" is Henley's fifth solo release, following numerous albums from the Eagles. Despite being known for his classic rock sound from the Eagles ("Hotel California") and solo ("Boys Of Summer"), Henley's voice is at home with the traditional pedal steel and fiddle found on this album. Not surprisingly, the collection debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. Carrie Underwood released her fifth studio album in October. Although mostly a pop album, Underwood still manages to hook listeners with her soaring voice and story songs. My favorite of this bunch is the live Micky & The Motorcars release from July, "Across The Pond: Live From Germany." There aren't any new songs but this is a wonderful collection of their songs throughout the years.

Albums make great gifts and with 2015 coming to a close and the holidays upon us, it's a great time to pick up some of these selections. Here's to 2016!

"Squelch" Album Review By Jason Boland & The Stragglers

"Squelch" is the aptly named title of Jason Boland & The Stragglers' brand new album. It's the band's eighth studio production, continuing in the vein of their brand of traditional country music. This is the highly anticipated follow up to 2013's stellar "Dark & Dirty Mile" and this time around, the subject matter is a little darker and the sound is grittier.

As with 2 other JBS albums, "Squelch" was recorded and mixed directly to tape. This no frills approach means a warmer, worn-in feel to the album making it sound more like their live shows. Along with the brilliant lyricism of Jason Boland's (lead vocalist, acoustic & electric guitar) words, The Stragglers are made up of Cody Angel (pedal steel, guitars), Brad Rice (drums, harmony vocals), Grant Tracy (bass guitar), and Nick Worley (fiddle, mandolin).

"Break 19" opens the album and sets the tone for the rest of the tracks. A hard driving tune about our fast paced world and the backwards way things are ran in this country. Meanwhile, "The First To Know" is a honky tonk number with a catchy melody full of pedal steel and fiddle.

The first single "Holy Relic Sale" is the most melodic song I've heard all year and is a personal favorite on the album. It's a tune about people and their lucky charms, centered around a woman with her "lucky blue socks." Another favorite is "Heartland Bypass," with its road weary drum beat and pedal steel coupled with heavy lyrics, "...Bypassing through the heartland...pumping power out to run the nursery rhyme...mainlining black sand...always paying out the interest on borrowed time..."

The only tune not penned by Boland or band mate Brad Rice (on "Lose Early") is the saddest one. "Christmas In Huntsville" was written by former Straggler Dana Hazzard and chronicles the last days of a young man who's on death row for a murder he didn't commit. Though it has a mid tempo beat, the lyrics are so vivid and heart wrenching.

"Do You Love Me Any Less" and "Bienville" are a couple of love ballads, the latter being another favorite. A road trip song weaving the story of a man who met the love of his life with landmarks along the way. The couple ends up spending their last dollars gambling and the song is left open ended for a part two on how they got home.

"Squelch" is another masterpiece in the long line of albums The Stragglers have released, politically and socially deeper than any of their previous work. Anyone searching for traditional country with a side of meaningful lyrics, The Stragglers have you covered. "Squelch" is undoubtedly one of the best albums of the year and is available now.

"The Turnpike Troubadours" Album Review

The Turnpike Troubadours have just released their highly anticipated self-titled album and expectations have been exceeded. This is the Oklahoma band's 4th album and brings a new chapter in the progression of their unique sound. The instrumentation this time around is more aggressive and lead vocalist Evan Felker's delivery is intense.

The Troubadours have been on the Red Dirt scene since 2007 and have quickly risen to stardom in the genre. The blending of country, bluegrass, and rock make for interesting and distinctive music and is one reason the band has become so popular. The Turnpike Troubadours consist of RC Edwards (bass, vocals), Ryan Engleman (electric guitar, steel), Evan Felker (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, banjo), Kyle Nix (fiddle, vocals), and Gabriel Pearson (drums, vocals, percussion). All of the songs were written or co-written by Felker and Edwards, with the exception of the deranged cover of the Old 97's "Doreen."

The record kicks off with a bang in "The Bird Hunters," a song about old friends and relationships set to Nix's impeccable fiddle playing. Next up is the rollicking "The Mercury," picking up where "Good Lord Lorrie" left off on the band's previous release "Goodbye Normal Street." Revisiting the tumultuous ex-relationship of Jimmy and Lorrie, the singer appears to be poised to make his move on Lorrie.

The album's lead off single "Down Here" is currently sitting at #1 on the Texas Music Chart. A mid-tempo tune about a friend who's a little down and out and has encountered a few obstacles of late. "...But you tried so bad just to be good...hold your cards and you knock on wood...a little harder than anyone should...but hey that's just your style..."

"Ringing In The Year" is one of the best tracks on the collection and a personal favorite. Buoyed by a fantastic drum beat and fiddle, the song explores a crumbled relationship tied into the seasons. It's songs like these where Felker's voice shines the most, the emotion is felt in lyrics like "...Well won't you miss your whiskey in the wintertime, my dear...the way that I've been missing you this fall...and cheap champagne don't dull the pain of ringing in the year...wondering if you think of me at all..."

Another standout is "Long Drive Home" a plaintive, mid tempo ballad which describes the hardships of a traveling musician's love life. Meanwhile, "Fall Out Of Love" is an achingly sad ballad and delivers yet another stunning vocal performance from Felker. The emotion runs high asking the question "How do you fall out of love...how do you know when to run..." The song appears to have the singer asking the question throughout yet it's him who has walked out.

Two songs on the collection are re-releases of songs from the band's first album. "Bossier City" and "Easton And Main" have been revamped, the latter song being one of my personal TpT favorites. "Easton" has a slower tempo this time around and has a warmer, worn in feel to it. The steel is perfect and the fiddle more prominent, making this update a new classic.

The Turnpike Troubadours have delivered another outstanding collection of songs, adding to their already remarkable catalog. Count this as one of the best albums of the year.

"Faded Gloryville" Album Review

Lindi Ortega's 4th full length album opens with the smoldering, passionate mid tempo "Ashes" and is a taste of what is to follow on the rest of "Faded Gloryville." The brand new collection of songs from the Canadian songstress picks up where her previous 3 albums left off, a brand of torch roots music with modern themes. Lindi wrote or co-wrote every song on the album except for one, the Bee Gee's remake "To Love Somebody."

The title track is a short and bittersweet ode to musicians who aspire to become the superstars they never will be. It's a sad state of affairs in the music business today, where an artist is only famous if they follow the "rules" and sell their souls for the sake of a dollar. Lindi laments "There ain't no stars in Faded Gloryville...We've chased our dreams into the ground...If disillusion has some hope to kill...Here nobody wears a crown..." It's not just a song for artists, but disenchanted dreamers everywhere who are living a life they didn't expect.

"Someday Soon" is every girl's journey in finding the man of her dreams and walking away from the men who don't fit the bill. The subject has been written about many times but Lindi sings it with such fervor that it sounds refreshing and new in her honest lyrics and delivery.

"Run Down Neighborhood" tells the tale of a couple of big city dwellers who live in a bad part of town. Despite the despair of the lyrics, Lindi's delivery is that of happiness, as if living life in the 'hood isn't so terrible.

A personal favorite is "I Ain't The Girl," a lovely shuffle with Lindi channeling the thoughts of millions of women everywhere. The song floats along beautifully behind the clever lyrics, "...You're too clean cut with polished shoes...I like 'em rugged with tattoos...You drive a really fancy car...I like a truck with rusty parts..."

The album closes with the stunning, lush ballad "Half Moon." Not really about the moon at all, but a man who's "veiled in midnight lace" and is a mystery to the singer. It's a simple piece and the instruments accompany Lindi's soulful voice perfectly.

"Faded Gloryville" has a different feel to the singer's previous 3 albums, it's as if there's a little more weariness this time around. The songs feel more sad and introspective and that's okay; life isn't all about parties and pickup trucks. I also highly recommend Lindi's other albums "Tin Star," "Cigarettes & Truckstops," & "Little Red Boots." "Faded Gloryville" is available now.

"Holidays & Wedding Rings" Album Review

Jamie Lin Wilson's new album "Holidays & Wedding Rings" is a fabulous second album from the Americana/indie country artist. Jamie is known for her previous work with the Gougers and most recently, The Trishas. On this new album (also check out 2010's EP "Dirty Blonde Hair), Jamie steps into the spotlight as one of the genre's finest vocalists, as well as a songwriter who's work is mature beyond her years.

"Holidays" starts off with the rollicking "Just Like Heartache," a pure Americana tune about knowing a relationship is over yet wanting to hold on to that person. Meanwhile, "You Left My Chair" is a soaring ballad about a divorce and the only thing remaining among the weeds is the woman's beloved chair.

"She'll Take Tonight" and "Nighttime Blues" are barroom shuffles reminiscent of 80's Country with modern twists. "Moving Along" flows beautifully telling a story of a person who has risen above past mistakes, "...Flying away above this tiny town with feathered wings and a shiny crown....until it's time to come back down...I'll take just one more look around...to check all the atmosphere...I'm wising up seeing clearer how I missed the little things like holidays and wedding rings..." The entire song is full of lovely lyrics and is a favorite from this collection.

A highlight on the album is the achingly beautiful duet with Wade Bowen "Just Some Things." The song is about two people who almost cheat but decide "...There are just some things you can't take back..." It's a quiet song that builds in intensity, the words are heavy and one can feel the raw emotion in every lyric.

On the flip side of the stunning duet, the delightful banjo-driven "Yours And Mine" rolls along about a happy couple who revel in the simple pleasures in life. The happiness doesn't last long, however, with "Seven Year Drought" a couple struggles to keep it together. Meanwhile, "Roses By The Dozen" is a deliciously dark murder ballad. Though the subject matter is somber, Jamie sings it as if she's apathetic to the man who she once loved.

"Holidays & Wedding Rings" is one of the best albums of the year. Do yourself a favor and pick up this incredible collection of songs.

"So This Is Life" Album Review

Courtney Patton's new album "So This Is Life" doesn't begin as most albums do. Instead of starting with a fast paced song, it begins with a mellow waltz that sets the tone for the rest of the collection. This is Courtney's highly anticipated 3rd album and includes some of her best songwriting to date.

"Little Black Dress" kicks off the album in fine style and from there, the songs only continue to be the beautiful, heartbreaking stories that will linger long after being heard. Adding to the plaintive lyrics, Courtney's strong, distinct vocals are wrapped around understated instruments. Even the cover photo is thought-provoking, just a taste of the 12 gems contained inside.

"War Of Art" is a lovely shuffle written for Courtney's children and the struggles parents go through trying to chase their dreams yet stay grounded at home. Meanwhile the title track is about the singer's parents and their downward spiral into divorce. It's a heart-wrenching, punch-in-the-gut look at what many families endure in the face of crumbling relationships.

"Need For Wanting" is about the typical moves men make while trying to land a woman at the bar. However, the twist at the end of the night puts a spin on the tune one doesn't expect from the strength of the character throughout the song. The arrangements are lovely, framing the lyrics perfectly, "...You look like a lesson I learned long ago...and I know more than I care to say..." If there was a perfect modern country song, this would be it and it's one of my favorites here.

Another beautiful ballad is "Twelve Days," about the singer's husband (fellow musician Jason Eady) being on the road. A simple yet stunning love song weaving fiddle around the heartfelt lyrics, "...You should be in Salt Lake and Stanley by sundown...to you it's just another show and to me...another far off town..." The entire song is perfection and another favorite.

The closing track "But I Did" is an autobiographical song set to lush acoustics with raw, real yet inspiring lyrics, "...I was born a dreamer dead set on doing...shaking and a-moving far away from here...found freedom in a melody and the groove kept me grounded..." Perfect words for dreamers, this is another favorite and really touches the soul.

Front to back, "So This Is Life" is a roller coaster of emotions set to gorgeous pedal steel and fiddle. Courtney Patton is a brilliant songwriter and powerful vocalist who's music needs to be heard beyond the confines of Texas. Do your ears a favor and pick up a copy of this stellar record.

As a regular user of MyChelle Dermaceuticals, I was excited when they announced the release of 2 new products. A cleanser and eye cream have been added to their fabulous lineup of skincare products and I was given the opportunity to test and review them.

What I love about MyChelle's products are that they're gluten and casein free (important to those of us with food allergies), as well as cruelty free and natural. Many products are vegan and everything is made with high quality ingredients that work with the skin. I've never used a MyChelle product I didn't like.

The new Refining Sugar Cleanser I was a bit apprehensive about because I have dry skin and have been using an oil cleanser over the winter, as well as MyChelle's Honeydew Unscented Cleanser. After the first use, I was amazed at how creamy the formula is after the sugar dissolves. It gently exfoliates, hydrates, and softens all in one use, making it the perfect multi-tasking cleanser. It removes makeup and is excellent for all skin types. The scent is fantastic, very sweet but not overpowering and makes me feel like I'm being pampered every time I wash my face. This is an excellent product I will continue to use and I highly recommend it.

The Remarkable Retinal Eye Cream is the other new product in MyChelle's beauty arsenal and it's a winner. I'm always a bit hesitant to try products with retinal ingredients because of the potency and increased sensitivity to the sun. However, this product is very gentle around my eyes and hasn't caused any redness or dryness. In fact, it's very hydrating and diminishes the little lines beneath my eyes almost immediately. The scent is a bit weird at first, it's almost minty but not offensive and fades quickly. This cream is to be used at night because of the retinal. A fabulous eye cream for the a.m. is MyChelle's Magnolia Fresh Eyes. I've been using this for quite awhile and am loving the results combined with the Remarkable Retinal. I'm looking forward to seeing the long term effects of this eye cream. This is an excellent formulation to use for those who want brighter and more youthful eyes.

Overall, MyChelle's new products have exceeded my expectations. They never fail to offer quality products that actually do what they claim to on the box. If you're looking for a new skincare line or just wanting to try a few new products, the Refining Sugar Cleanser and Remarkable Retinal Eye Cream are a great place to start.

Artist Spotlight: The Black Lillies

I became familiar with The Black Lillies just less than a year ago when I saw they were added to the lineup at the 2014 Braun Brothers Reunion in Challis, Idaho. Prior to seeing them live, I'd only heard one song "Gold And Roses." That one song and their amazing performance at BBR made me take notice of this fabulous band from Knoxville, Tennessee.

"Runaway Freeway Blues"

The band formed in 2008 and have released 3 albums, 2009's "Whiskey Angel, 2011's "100 Miles Of Wreckage," and "Runaway Freeway Blues" followed in 2013. The Black Lillies have a unique sound, best defined as Americana/Indie Roots Rock/Appalachian music with elements of traditional country and even jazz and blues.

"100 Miles Of Wreckage"

The Black Lillies are comprised of lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Cruz Contreras, harmony/lead vocalist Trisha Gene Brady, drummer Bowman Townsend, bass player Robert Richards, and pedal steel/multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Tom Pryor. Earlier this month, it was announced that Robert and Tom are leaving the band for other endeavors. With that said, it will be a new beginning in a chapter of The Black Lillies' story that really has just begun.

"Whiskey Angel"

The lyrics and instrumentation of the songs are at the heart of what makes The Black Lillies sound so distinct. There aren't many bands that cover such a wide variety of topics, from gold mining to trucking to murderous love triangles and beyond. Cruz's brilliant songwriting takes these themes and brings them to life. The characters leave an impression long after hearing the melodies. My favorites include the historical story songs "Gold And Roses" and "Shepherd's Song," as well as "The Fall," "Two Hearts Down," "Same Mistakes," "Midnight," and "All This Living."

"Long Road To Nowhere" Single Review

Micky & The Motorcars have a brand new single "Long Road To Nowhere" and a spectacular scenic video to accompany the song. The video is a nice addition to the beautiful, rambling tune, shot in Idaho during the Braun Brothers Reunion in August.

"Long Road To Nowhere" is the second single from MMC's stellar "Hearts From Above" album, released last July (read my full review here http://gypsysoule.blogspot.com/2014/07/album-review-hearts-from-above-micky.html). The song takes listeners on a journey from the viewpoint of a road-weary traveler who has lost his love. The instrumentation weaves its way beautifully through the haunting lyrics, "...It's a long road to nowhere...with a million miles to go...I reach for you...I reach for your love...there's no one that knows me better than you..." As the song progresses, it's evident that the relationship has unravelled into nothing but the memories that remain. "...The road it moves in circles...the road it moves in songs...the saddest one's for you..."

The harmonies, the instrumentation, and the lyrics all combine to make this one of the best songs on "Hearts From Above." Do yourself a favor and pick up this outstanding album.

"Trashy Side" Single Review

Kimberly Dunn's new single "Trashy Side" is a feisty female anthem currently climbing the Texas Music Chart. The tune is full of spiteful lyrics that bounce along to Kimberly's fine vocals. I stumbled upon this new song listening to Texas radio and at the time was not familiar with Kimberly's work. I'm always searching for artists who are new and different on the scene. Kimberly's music is refreshing in a field dominated by male artists.

The San Antonio, Texas native barrels through the song with fervor, making it clear to a home wrecker that she isn't going to back down without a fight when it comes to stealing her man. It starts out ominously and builds into an all out fiery war of words, "...You're on display with a cheap price tag and all I see is a target on your back..." and "...Been a long time since I had to fight, but I'm betting that's just like riding a bike...girl you're stepping on these roots I hide...you're bringing out my trashy side..."

Not many females make it to the top of the Texas charts these days, but if a song is going to do it, this one has the potential to blow away the male competition with its fierce delivery and bitter lyrics.

Best Albums Of 2014

Another year is almost in the books and 2014 produced some remarkable new music. Many of these albums from established artists who's music was very much anticipated after outstanding prior releases.

One of the best of the year was released this Summer, "Hearts From Above" by Micky & The Motorcars. After 2011's excellent "Raise My Glass," it was hard to believe this band could release a better album but "Hearts" may very well be their best to date. Laced with a happier vibe than their last, MMC takes listeners on a blissful ride through the eyes of love. For those of who dig heartbreaking songs, there's no lack of those, either. Top tracks are "Once In A Lifetime Girl," "Long Road To Nowhere," "My Girl Now," "Tonight We Ride," and "From Where The Sun Now Stands." Lee Ann Womack's stunning "The Way I'm Livin'" is a long time coming from the Grammy winner. Her last album was 2008's fine "Call Me Crazy." This notes Lee Ann's apparent departure from mainstream country to the Americana genre. Lee Ann's music fits nicely here, as she's always cut songs from some of the genre's most well-known writers. Standout tracks include "Chances Are," "Send It On Down," "Nightwind," "Don't Listen To The Wind," and the title track.

Another much-anticipated release was Wade Bowen's self-titled album in October. Following 2012's major label "The Given," this new collection of songs is diverse and very different from his prior album. The instruments and melodies are unexpected in certain songs, yet still sound perfect in placement around Wade's vocals and lyrics. Key tracks are "Long Enough To Be A Memory," "When I Woke Up Today," "West Texas Rain," "My California," "When It's Reckless," and "Sweet Leona."

Sunny Sweeney's August release of "Provoked" was followed by the lead single's march up to #1 on the Texas Music Chart in October. "Bad Girl Phase" was the song that took Sunny to the top of the chart, the first female to do so since 2003. The first single from "Provoked" sets the stage for the sass and attitude that follows on the rest of the album. Sunny is what country music should sound like, no topic is off limits and often her songs are a painful look at life. Outstanding tracks include the lead single, "Front Row Seats," "Carolina On The Line," "Uninvited," "My Bed," "Sunday Dress," and "Used Cars."

Undoubtedly one of the most traditional country albums released this year was "Daylight & Dark" by Jason Eady. Simple, stripped down, and earthy, this collection is a must have for anyone who's craving real country music. The songs take a hard, realistic look at life between the bottle, heartbreak, and hope. The finest of the bunch are "The Other Side Of Abilene," "Liars & Fools," "Lonesome Down & Out," "We Might Just Miss Each Other" (a duet with Courtney Patton), and the stunning title track.

Honorable mentions go to a couple of albums that do not feature new music but are must haves in any fan's collection. Corb Lund's "Counterfeit Blues" is a Sun Studios recording of previously released material. It's sort of a live greatest hits without the audience. The album is raw, organic, and fresh, capturing the band's definitive sound.

Lindi Ortega's "iTunes Sessions" contains 6 original songs previously released, as well as 2 covers, including a smoldering version of "Ring Of Fire." These 8 songs are stripped down versions, but still blow away the listener with Lindi's phenomenal vocals.

2014 offered these and other amazing albums, closing another year in music that continues to move and inspire the listener. Here's to 2015 with what will no doubt be another extraordinary year for songs to fill the soul.

Album Review "Hearts From Above" Micky & The Motorcars

"Hearts From Above" is the 6th studio album from one of Americana music's best, Micky & The Motorcars, and is the much-anticipated follow up to 2011's stellar collection "Raise My Glass." The new album of 12 songs has a much happier vibe than their prior but it does not disappoint in pulling at the heartstrings. "Hearts From Above" is full of beautiful songs laced with the themes of travel, love, history, and a few rockers the band is known for. A sound not heard for awhile on MMC's music is the addition of Cody Braun's (from Reckless Kelly) fiddle; it accompanies the Braun brothers' voices perfectly and hopefully this won't be the last time we hear fiddle on a Motorcars album. Rounding out The Motorcars' sound is Joe Fladger on bass, Bobby Paugh on drums and percussion, and Dustin Schaefer on electric and acoustic lead guitar and slide guitar.

The title track and current single opens the album and sets the tone for the rest of the songs. It's a mid-tempo love song featuring sterling harmonies from all of the Braun brothers. It's a song about not only feeling love from across town, but from those who are looking down from above.

"Long Road To Nowhere" shows off a vulnerability in Micky Braun's voice I haven't heard since 2008's brilliant "Seeds." The raw emotion in this road song is on full display and the melody is a bit melancholy in places. The song bounces along teetering between heartache and hopefulness, conveying the desperation of the situation.

The album has a smattering of happy love songs but those are balanced with plenty of rockers MMC is known for. "Hurt Again, " "Destined To Fall," "Fall Apart," "Southbound Street" and "Tonight We Ride" are all instant Motorcars classics. "Tonight We Ride" is an intense anthem that has been humming in my head since the first time I heard it almost a year ago live. The first two verses build into a soaring chorus about fighting for what you believe in.

"Once In A Lifetime Girl" takes the listener on a geographical love journey and it's a standout on the collection. With Micky Braun's warm vocal backed by beautiful fiddle and heartfelt lyrics, the delivery is a simple yet lovely ode to the singer's girl. It's one of the most traditional country songs found on this collection and one of my favorites.

Another stellar composition is "My Girl Now," a mid-tempo shuffle that also leans heavily towards the traditional sound. From the first verse of "I see you staring off into the distance...wasting wishes on every falling star...but they burn out just like every birthday candle...and you end up standing right back where you are..." to the last notes; it conveys the urgency to the singer's girl to stop looking around and be content where she is. The melody is one of the prettiest in the bunch.

"You Led Me The Wrong Way" and "From Where The Sun Now Stands" feature Gary Braun on lead vocals. The former written by Gary about an on again, off again relationship and the latter a stellar ballad about the plight of the Wallowa band of the Nez Perce. Written by Gary and Willy Braun (from Reckless Kelly), the song takes listeners back to a time where the Nez Perce, led by Chief Joseph, were forced from their home in the Wallowa Valley, Oregon, to Idaho, then on to Montana. About 40 miles from the Canadian border, Chief Joseph surrendered to General Miles and is reported to have said, "Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever." The lyrics of the song mirror that sentiment and make for a very powerful statement set to beautiful music.

"Sister Lost Soul" is the only cover of the album, penned by Alejandro Escovedo and Charles Prophet, but it feels at home to MMC's sound. It's a fitting tribute to former MMC bassist, Mark McCoy, and to all who've been lost.

Micky & The Motorcars continue to create amazing music all the while touring relentlessly. I highly recommend this new album (as well as the others) and also seeing them perform live. "Hearts From Above" is available on July 31st in limited locations, everywhere on August 5.

Guest Post - "Cabin Fever" Album Review

Corb Lund is an artist it took me a shamefully long time to discover, and then to like. Consequently, I’m very, very late in discovering all of his albums, most importantly his latest, “Cabin Fever”. As it was released in 2012, I’m over a year behind. However, this album is so refreshingly different that I feel it still merits talking about.

The tracks on “Cabin Fever” are really varied. There are love songs, cowboy songs, drinking songs, and….even a cow song! It’s things like these that tell me how truly artistic Corb Lund is. The fact that he is able to do all these songs, and have none of them come off corny is amazing to me.

The album opens with “Getting Down on the Mountain," a crazy mix of what-if apocalypse scenarios and thoughts that the country is the place to be. I’ve never heard a song like this, and I think it was done really well. Plus, it’s a very good showcase of Corb’s songwriting and overall sound, and it gets you in the mood to listen to a Corb Lund album.

Then, there is “Dig Gravedigger, Dig." And yes, it’s really about a gravedigger. No metaphors here guys, Corb really went there! It’s a cool song, with elements of blues and a good groove to it. “Bible On the Dash” features Hayes Carll, a well-known Texas country artist. The duet is all about getting pulled over by the police, and the Bible on their dash getting them out of some unsavory situations.

One of my favorites from this album is “September." This is a really sad love song about a rural man losing his girl to the big city. I haven’t heard a love song like this in a long time, so it’s refreshing. This is no standard breakup song, it’s all about the divide between the country and the city, and how some people want different things in life. . The very amusing “Cows Around” is all about cows, and how they make life better…or not. “Drink It Like You Mean It” is a drinking song, but Corb’s drinking like a serious person, not one of those ironic, amateur drinkers. I love the musical arrangement of this song, and Corb’s lyrics in it are witty.

Then, there are the story songs” “Priceless Antique Pistol Shoots Startled Owner” may be a long title for a song, but it really tells all. An unsuspecting antique gun owner gets shot by the person he was showing off his gun to. “Pour Em Kinda Strong” is a really big favorite of mine. The title is misleading on this one, and I didn’t realize that it was more of a story than a drinking song, at first. It’s a story about an outlaw, who just may have changed his ways had he not died in the end.

Overall, this album is a must-have if you like country music, cowboy songs, or stories and humor in your music’s lyrics. “Pour Em Kinda Strong” is my favorite new story song, as far as outlaw and Western stories go. “September” is a beautifully sad love song that is also really unique. With his ability to convey many emotions, be it sadness or humor, this album is one of my favorite purchases in the last year. Add to all this that the fact that the deluxe edition of “Cabin Fever” comes with acoustic versions of all the songs on this album, and I’m extremely happy that I’ve finally started liking the genius that is Corb Lund.
