Last Friday luvvie Joakim Boren has been picked as a winner in the recent Media Innovation Awards staged by the Plymouth Media Partnership.

This sharp-eyed, oh-so-hip photographer wowed judges with his excellent architectural imagery and he was "celebrated as the most innovative newcomer for demonstrating outstanding creative and technical ability across a range of work".

We're delighted to be his mates. Let's buy him a drink when we see him.

Meanwhile, tonight (Friday 14 Nov) is the night for luvvies Rob Ditcher and Joakim Boren, who stage a joint exhibition called Non Places in Soul Life on Southside Street.

You can pop in any time during the shop's opening hours and check out their work - and of course purchase some fantastic, original (and Last Friday sanctioned) art in time for Christmas.

Yes, the knives were out this Last Friday...thanks to a Hallowe'en slash-up at our newly invigorated session (with lashings of support from those occultists over at ArtsMatrix).

We welcomed back old faces and plenty of new ones too, including Karen from the newly rebranded Gallery Guest House. She's keen on some quality contemporary art to put on her walls, so if you want to link up, email her here or call her on 01752 660801.

Karin Jordan (right) waved her wand and shared out spells. Spells which/witch asked: "What do you need to create?" and "what was the last great book you read?".

Meanwhile, Katie cut up some pumpkins dangerously.

Painter Martin Bush surprised everyone by stepping out from his Royal William Yard studio and showing his face. He's the one on the left by the way...

We also outed the new We-Bay board, where ideas are pinned up and shared. Keep thinking for next time - this will become a feature.

DON LETTS AT NEW FILM FESTY

Get ready for the arrival of a unique, innovative and super-cool British icon in our very own city.

There are many faces to Don Letts: he's won a Grammy for his excellent documentary on The Clash, he's made music videos for the likes of Bob Marley and Elvis Costello, he's responsible for getting a whole generation of punk rockers into reggae and he was one of the first to introduce the art of sampling film dialogue onto records. And he's got his own show on BBC 6.

So, what's he doing here then? From May 21-31, Flipside Film Festival will give the South West the opportunity to enjoy non-traditional, experimental and boundary-pushing films, and they'll all be shown in Plymouth for the first time. Don's coming here for the closing event: he'll be speaking at Plymouth Arts Centre on Saturday May 31 (afternoon) which also includes screenings of his films. He'll also be reading from his biography "Culture Clash"

For the closing party (also Saturday May 31), Don will then bless the decks with choice reggae, dub & dancehall at Bar Favela (downstairs), supported local floor-mashers Dirty Arry & Crusty. All other Flipside events are across various venues in Plymouth

LAST FRIDAY PHOTOGRAPHER MARK MAKES IT ONTO THE BBC

Startling and stark imagery of the underbelly of Plymouth taken by Last Friday regular and advertiser Mark Highton-Ridley have won the fella a space on one of the biggest websites in the world.

A feature on Mark's photographs appears on www.bbc.co.uk, after he was interviewed by the BBC Devon web team. See the feature here.

Says the Beeb: "For those who know the city, the views are recognisable, but also strangely alien at the same time. And for those not familiar with Plymouth, it gives an insight into a city that is constantly changing."

They add: "[Mark's] fascination with the black and white genre, interest in perspective and strong lines in his photos, truly show Plymouth in a striking and arresting light."

Mark loves the exposure (he would do, wouldn't he?) for his exhibition: "I feel elated to get recognition for all the hard work and the emotional wringer I've been through in its creation. It's really fantastic to get this exposure - great early results from some hard PR slog!"

He added: "This is stage 1. There may be a stage 2 as there are so many areas of Plymouth I've yet to visit with my camera."

Mark's photographs have been turned into a digitial presentation, which is available free from the B-bar.

They are also on show at the MasaVision Fine Art Gallery in The Brewhouse in the historic Royal William Yard.

You'll blossom if you read John's column

Welcome to this month’s Zen item.

Five years ago at this time of the year I was visiting Japan and about to enjoy the delights of one of Japan’s traditional celebrations: the viewing of the Cherry blossoms.

The Japanese people love this time of year, visiting parks to view the Cherry blossom is a seasonal highlight.

In the evening everyone goes out to celebrate in the parks, large groundsheets are placed under the trees, shoes removed, picnics set out and Saki bottles opened.

Young and old all enjoy this spring window of opportunity to come together and admire the beauty of the Cherry blossom.

This links in well with a book I’m reading at the moment entitled ‘Zen is right here’ which is a collection of teaching stories and anecdotes of Shunryu Suzuki the founder and abbot of San Francisco Zen centre.

Here’s an extract to stimulate your Zen appetite:

“During a break on the fourth day of a seven day retreat (Sesshin) at Tassajara, I stood on a bridge overlooking the creek. It was a beautiful autumn day. The leaves on the trees were all vibrating and alive, and I could see energy coursing through everything.

"Suzuki Roshi came by, looked in my eyes, and said, 'Stay exactly like that.'

If you have the time, Torr Lane is a wonderful place to see blossom at this time of the year. That’s if the wind hasn’t already blown it all away.

Ah well. If it has, it just confirms the Zen saying that ‘nothing is permanent’ – except of course the false view that the self we think we are is real.

Don’t even think about it!

POETRY SUPPER AT RESTAURANT: Hungry for some culture?

There's rhyme'n'seasoning at a Plymouth arts-supporting restaurant in April.

Bistro One and the Tamar Valley-based Peterloo Poets are presenting Poetry for Supper 2008.

It's their annual festival of the spoken word and it features performances by Kate Scott, Meg Peacocke and Stella Davis at the bistro at 68 Ebrington Street, Charles Cross, Plymouth.

As in previous years, the performances are limited to 32 dining places, allowing comfy seating for all.

On Wednesday April 16, you'll be able to hear Kate Scott. Her first full volume of poetry, Stitches, was published by Peterloo Poets in 2003. Her work has been heard regularly on Radio 4's Poetry Please programme and in the USA. She's also written short stories and a novel for young adults.

As well as the poetry, the £27.50 price includes a welcome glass of wine and some Bistro Meze - multiple tasty dishes.

All evenings begin at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Telephone-only bookings at 01752 313315.

Question and answer session with Phil Wilson of the June Brides

A lot of you used the links in last month’s feature on Phil Wilson (pictured left), so here’s an exclusive interview with the well-respected gentleman of indie-pop who's living round these parts.

Phil sang & played guitar in The June Brides: purveyors of upbeat melodic and often dramatic guitar pop. A tribute album was released recently, with Phil’s songs covered by a host of bands, including Manic Street Preachers.

Phil’s admirers also include Morrissey and former Creation Records boss Alan McGee. Phil, who now lives just up the A38, is due to do a tour of the States. He also recently recorded with Plymouth psychedelic pop combo The Painted Word.

Q:Have you played in the USA before?
A:“No I’ve never been to America but I’ve played Europe before. The gigs will coincide with the US release of a new double 7” single on Slumberland Records.”

Q:Is it true you’ll be staying in the same hotel room where Gram Parsons died?
A:“Yes indeed. Some people go to cathedrals for a spiritual injection, and I’m hoping to get one at that hotel, no pun intended.”

Q:Any plans of another June Brides reunion?
A:“Not really. Everyone’s gone their separate ways and I now live in Devon. Unless we get millions to tour, but then that’s not very likely.”

Q:How about some gigs in the South West?
A:“I’ve got one at Exeter on April 17^th, as a part of a small UK tour. I want to do more round here, so if anyone wants a bit of Phil Wilson, contact me through the website.”

Q:Anything else coming out?
A:“There’s a label in Japan named after my song “Every Conversation”. I’ve rerecorded the song for them and it’s coming out as a double A side, with a cover version of the song by a band called Sarandon.”

One of the fundamental principles of the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chado) applies directly to giving.

It is called ‘kokoro ire’, or inclusion of the heart’s spirit.

A story involving Japan’s foremost tea master, Sen Rikyu (1522 – 1591), illustrates this point. It tells of a tea grower who once invited the great tea master to have tea.

Overwhelmed with joy at Rikyu’s acceptance, the tea grower led him to the tea room and served tea to Rikyu himself.

However in his excitement his hand trembled and he performed badly, dropping the tea scoop and knocking the tea whisk over.

The other guests, disciples of Rikyu, snickered at the tea grower’s manner of making tea, but Rikyu was moved to say, “It was the finest”.

On the way home, one of the disciples asked Rikyu, “Why were you so impressed by such a shameful performance?”

Rikyu answered, “This man did not invite me with the idea of showing off his skill. He simply wanted to serve me tea with his whole heart.

"He devoted himself completely to making a bowl of tea for me, not worrying about errors, I was struck by that sincerity.”

This is the route to higher realization in Zen: To give for the sheer pleasure of giving.

SHINE A LIGHT ON A LUVVIE: Meet Ewan McKnight

Ewan McKnight is one of the TV people.

With his background in television production, Ewan has set up his own studio, specialising in all aspects of television and video post-production including editing, motion graphics,
special effects and DVD Authoring.

For those living in black and white, here comes the technical bit.

The studio facility is based around the industry-leading ‘Media Composer Adrenaline HD’ from Avid and is aimed at offering the region's independent film-makers and producers the same professional grade facilities you would expect to find in Soho.
Whether you are producing a corporate video for DVD or web distribution or a short documentary to submit to a festival, the fully-featured suite can handle any industry standard formats from DV all the way up to HDCAM.

The suite is portable (although you'll need a van to get it around), and can be either used where it is, or dry-hired.

Ewan is the post-production operator on this exciting facility that can be used for independent film making, education, corporate markets.

CONSUMERISM: Really Good Records

It's been two years on the B-side for Really Good Records.

This cracking independent record shop tucked away in Bretonside Bus Station is packed with an estimated 25,000 slabs of vinyl, and peeping over the black-gold mountain is proprietor Mike Offen.

"I started the shop in May 1994," he says. "It will be 14 years on May 6. I'm quite pleased. When I started I didn't anticipate the shop lasting. It was just something I wanted to do.

"I thought at the time, 'If this lasts a year I'll be laughing...'," By this stage of the game he must be hysterical. Mind you, dealing with the Download Era tends to put a dampener on disc-dealers.

Luckily Mike's rarely rattled. "I think the internet is fantastic but my feeling is that too much of a reliance on it is not necessarily a good thing.

"There's a need for balance, there's a need for real shops and real interaction. To take it to its finite conclusion, when there are no record shops, only those from big conglomerates that can compete, then that will be a sad world." And downloaders don't get years of expertise through their mouse-clicks.

"The greatest advantage of coming to this place is that you don't just find what you're looking for. You find what you weren't looking for," says Mike.

"I can say to someone, 'If you like that, then perhaps you will like this' or 'that member of the band was also a member of this band'. It's all about what's out there that you didn't know of.

"To me, that's what an interest in music is. It's a constant stimulation."

This year Mike plans to travel wider in his ongoing quest to dig more crates and get ever dustier fingers. Plus he'll be seeing more gigs whilst promoting Really Good Records where he can.

UNDERDOGS PROJECT PLANNING WORKSHOP

A free workshop takes place at Plymouth College of Art and Design on Monday 27 January & Tuesday 28th, from 10am – 4pm.

It is part of the two day 'Art/ists in unusual places' symposium and features artists Claire Sterland (Stand Assembly, Nottingham) and Katie Doubleday (Graft, Nottingham) who will be running a two-day beginners project planning workshop for local artists.

The workshop is aimed at early career artists and recent graduates that want to initiate their own artistic projects. Participants will obtain practical advice, information and skills from artists with experience in successfully delivering large and small scale projects, events, festivals, exhibitions, symposiums, talks and workshops.

The workshop will cover the following areas:
planning and budgeting, recruiting, marketing, delivering/producing, documenting, evaluating, following-up, plus loads of tips and guidance on how to manage time, money, people and resources.

There's also the opportunity for:

Tips and guidance on how to work with artists and professionals
Knowledge and information sharing on current opportunities and resources available locally and nationally
Socialising and networking with the group

The breakout discussion is on engaging the wider sector in Plymouth's Cultural and Creative Charter. What? You didn't know we had one? Tut tut.

The seminar also coincides with the Big Arts Exhibition put on by city arts-education agency Barefoot. Look out for schools' art work and performances.

Here comes the bride

Phil Wilson, former singer & guitarist in 80s indie-pop heroes The June Brides recently moved to Buckfastleigh with his wife.

A tribute album to the band was released this year, and on it, Phil's songs are covered by a host of bands including Manic Street Preachers. Phil's admirers also include Morrissey and former Creation Records boss Alan McGee.

The June Brides' sound was upbeat and melodic, using 60s-style jangly guitars with the addition of a violinist and a trumpet player. Their album 'There Are Eight Million Stories' reached number 1 in the indie charts and shifted 30,000 copies in the mid-80s, and since then, the band have had a few reunions, using members of the Undertones as live stand-ins.

After his group disbanded, Phil released 2 fantastic solo singles on Creation Records (the home of Oasis), and a third which was a collaboration with Andrew Innes, guitarist with Primal Scream.

He then took a break from music, but has recently begun writing and recording again, with releases on labels in Canada, America and Japan.

In the near future, Phil Wilson will be making an appearance at Plymouth's cabaret/live music night Odd Ball. Watch this space.

What do you buy the man/woman in black in your life? The latest album by longtime Plymouth darkwave-riders All Living Fear.

At the later part of last year, Bovey Tracey-based All Living Fear have just released a new album, marking 15 years in the game. And they played the Whitby Goth Weekender, so they're obviously well in there on the goth scene.

Aptly-named '15 Years After', the double album was partly recorded in Plymouth and features contributions from Julianne Regan (All About Eve) Steve Bronski - yes, from Bronski Beat - and Arthur 'I Am the Lord of Hell-Fire' Brown.

BEAUTY IS IN THE ZEN OF THE BEHOLDER

John Pollex, Arsenal fan, artist potter, Last Friday columnist and Zen master shares the love...

Hi and welcome back to my Zen item no.5.

I've just had another look at one of my favourite books - 'The Unknown Craftsman' by Sōetsu Yanagi, adapted by Bernard Leach. I have a first edition which was published in 1972 and is bound with handmade mulberry bark paper (momigami) from ToyamaPrefecture.

My copy has that lovely old bookie smell now and is wonderful to just sit and hold. I hope Plymouth's Levinsky Building ages as well.

What follows is a snippet from a chapter on the Buddhist idea of beauty:

"Beauty from the Zen point of view is the state of non-preoccupation, it is that which in every respect is free.

"In pursuit of the pre-differentiated world, Zen monks asked such questions as 'How about an old mirror before it is polished?' or 'How about a lotus blossom before it emerges from the water?'.

"Translated to the realm of aesthetics, such questions become: 'How about the time before the beautiful and the ugly were differentiated?'

"Art is usually, so to speak, a struggle between the beautiful and the ugly, a struggle in which the artist seeks to subjugate the ugly and bring victory to the beautiful.

"But this is a process that can take place only after the separation of the two. The Zen point of view warns that this struggle is not a final solution to the problem, that the artist must dwell in the world before there is beauty or ugliness, that only there is salvation to be found.

"The fundamental "undifferentiated" or "unborn" state is expressed in Buddhist terms as inherent or innate or inborn nature.

"The distinction between beauty and ugliness is post-natal and artificial, and therefore one is constantly advised to "return to one's original state", since this means liberation from dualism.

"The object of Buddhist aesthetics is the clarification of the following truths:

1. That the inherent nature of man is not dualistic; that non-dual entirety is the primordial home of us all; that the place is purity itself.

2. That the division of things into two is merely a later event and is unnatural, that the distinction between the beautiful and the ugly is based on human delusion and is wholly artificial.

3.That we must accordingly forsake the dualistic fallacy and return to our old home of non-duality, where our salvation is promised.

"Zen looks forward then, to the state where there is no dualistic strife, a state it describes by the words buji ("no event") or bunan ("no trouble"). What is implied by the two terms is the absence of storm, of conflict, of disease, of living with one's self nature without illusion and in complete tranquillity. Worshipping the beautiful and hating the ugly are immature; Zen admonishes us to seek the world where no antagonism exists".

This Kizaemon Ido teabowl from Korea from the 16^th century Yi dynasty renders all critical comment meaningless and sums up the content of the item above.

We're back at our spiritual home from the end of September

We've got good news for all you creative types who want a place to inhabit in this city.

Last Friday returns as a monthly get-together for the luvvies (and non-luvvies too!) on Friday September 28 at the B-bar in the Barbican Theatre.

The event started life in 2002 when its creators Motiongrafik decided that Creative Plymouth needed a knees-up for its creative citizens.

The event was deliberately sparse, with the aim of creating a nice space for people to chat, meet and connect, without the pressure of other hyped-up networking events.

Loads of people found they made new friends and contacts at Last Friday, while professional and creative collaborations were forged aplenty (many of us left the event intoxicated but in-touch with our inner booze-creative...), with results popping up all over the city.

Last year, Last Friday shifted to Plymouth Arts Centre, but now it's back to the B-bar, thanks to new operators of this lovely spot.

Last Friday takes place on Friday 28th September between 6pm and 8pm (although you're more than welcome to linger longer).

Last Friday takes a well-earned rest

For the best part of five years, Last Friday has provided Plymouth's creatives with a place to natter, canoodle and maybe even network.

But the time has come for Last Friday itself to kick back and relax.

So we Orderers of Conversational Chaos are sending ourselves on a sabbatical for a couple of months.

We've got our imitators (and you have to pay to go there) who want a slice of the business action.

Yes, here at Last Friday, we're ready to take you deeper into the 21st century than you've ever been before. So hold on tight as we ready your for your rollercoaster ride at Plymouth's grooviest little secret bar.

Hopefully, by Friday January 26, you'll be ready to open your wallets and your minds to the first Last Friday of 2007.
