Winner of the 'Holiday' category at this year's World Architecture Festival, Barcelona, is Restaurant Tusen by Swedish architectural office, Murman Arkitekter. Lying at the snowy outpost of the small but perfectly formed Ramundberget ski resort, Sweden, Restaurant Tusen, with its bark-covered birch tree frontage, stands like some post-apocalyptic fort.

The strangely welcoming imposition of this foodie citadel, situated as it is in the bleak, snowy landscape, is a fine example of Murman Arkitekter's intentions of environmental engagement for reasons both ecological and humanitarian. The carefully chosen location places Restaurant Tusen between the birch trees of its facade, mountain streams and rocky outcrops. This, coupled with its wind-reducing and therefore view-optimising funneled form, makes genuine fulfilment of their goal to create architecture which is absolutely to affect and bring joy to the eye (aswell as the stomach) of the beholder.

Sky Movies today launches an exciting competition in search of the nations's new rising star of UK film-making. The competition will give one lucky winner the unique opportunity to have their own HD film financed and broadcast on Sky Movies Indie HD.

Sky Movies Indie HD, in association with The Independent and Skillset is inviting aspiring film makers to submit their own one-page treatment for a 10 minute HD short film. A panel of industry experts will consider these treatments including Sky Movies’ Movie Geek presenter Josh Howie, before announcing the winner in December. Biff Juggernaught productions presents The Voice Inside, a black and white short film for fans of the slightly more extreme. The Voice Inside is a kinetic short following one characters battle with and final decent into madness. The film opens with an unnamed man sat on a subway train, at first all seems normal, but soon we learn just why the film is called The Voice Inside.

The main and only role is played by Elias who you can see in a very different role as the hapless reporter in LovecraCked! The Movie. This is a good turn from Elias as well, as we see him tormented by an inner voice. He at first tries to suppress it with medication, but is told it is now to strong to be held at bay. After returning home from the subway, he again tries his medication, but only finds himself vomiting heavily. Next he goes for blunt force trauma as a means to fight the voice in his head. Head butting walls and pushing himself with the Iron rings from the stove. He manages to smash his face up pretty good, but the inner voice will not be silenced. Finally he is defeated and now the voice has its turn at desecrating the leads body, which means we are treated to a very nasty use of a hammer.

The Voice Inside is an impressive short film that will have many drawing comparisons to Darren Aronofsky' PI and Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo, all be it not reaching the heights either of those full length outings achieve. The medium it was shot on does mean the picture is not the best, but in many way's it suits the films content. The Biff Juggernaught team manage to mix shock value with real skills, understanding that shock on it's own is in no way enough. The effects, both practical and camera trickery are fairly low level and not overdone, but are used to full effect. Normally I am not a huge fan of "shaky cam", but here the camera work is suited to the subject matter and defiantly adds to the quality of the short.

The Voice Inside is a short well worth watching, but be warned, its graphic nature is maybe suited only to those more used to extreme film.

And more so, it can also be a cut just for you, as if one of the standard sizes doesn't fit your frame you can also request a made-to-measure option.

Also a special mention has to be made to the model in this photoshoot. Grey is now officially the new black, brown and blonde. I walked past a young lady at the airport the other day with strikingly grey hair and I'm almost tempted to abandon the hair dye and let nature take its course. Though somehow me thinks that the odd stray strand doesn't quite have the same impact as full on silver.

Hamming it up from October 28th - November 15th in three locations (Idea Generation Gallery, Lexi Cinema and Curzon Soho,) the HFL will pay homage to the golden age of British horror with a selection of screenings and an exhibition of previously unseen photos, prints and artwork, as well as a detailed look at the Hammer legacy (hopefully they'll skip past the studio's bloodless resurrection.)

It's exciting technological times for our friends across the pond as tomorrow (Friday) night will see the launch of coast-to-coast entertainment goodness courtesy of Studio 3 Partners' (Paramount/Viacom, MGM and Lionsgate) bouncing bundle of joy, EpixHD. And in light of this momentous occasion, yours truly has had the irrefutable pleasure of conversing with Emil Rensing, head of online for Studio 3, to get the scoop on just what it is we're missing out on here in the UK.

Available nationwide to those subscribed to the Verizon FiOS system, EpixHD promises to furnish those lucky souls with a veritable feast of audio/visual delectations, kicking off with an impressive line-up tomorrow night. But behind the glittering launch (Iron Man, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and re-patriated Queen of Pop, Madonna, will all be present to usher in this next-gen entertainment medium) lies a (thankfully) forward-thinking model that not only has an eye on the media consumption zeitgeist, but to its certain evolution, too.

What EpixHD will bring is a premium television channel which will provide on-demand streaming and television with the addition of original content. Movies licensed directly from the studios, which have up until now had a year-long wait for cable network premiere screenings, will debut after only 8 months. Musical content, too, will feature heavily, as will comedy exclusives. And with some interesting sounding creative partnerships in the pipeline, EpixHD will be offering original programming to its viewers aswell. But that's not quite all, folks, as there will be a component, namely the 'Private Screening' feature, that'll integrate social media into the bargain to boot, enabling simultaneous multi-party viewings coupled with a real time chat platform.

Entertainment envy aside, this is great news for the future of visual media. As previously stated, the evolution of our consumption is natural and undeniable, and it is perilous to ignore this. To have content on-demand that is so highly personally usable makes previous viewing seem positively archaic. It's become less of a frivolous luxury and more of an accepted necessity to use media in this way. After all, 'on-demand,' for all its petulantly instantaneous and selfish connotations, is a suitable terminology indeed for what we rightly expect from today's technology. And, to paraphrase lyrics sampled by the mighty EPMD, you've got to give the people what they want.

So, don't fight for your right to partake, simply subscribe and you, too, can enjoy a whole world of entertainment in your living room from 8pm tomorrow night, ET.

I first saw Toxic back in the 90's on Fourmations (Showcase for animation on UK Channel 4) and its quite possibly my favourite animated short ever. Andrew McEwan won a BAFTA for Best Animated Film for it back in 1991 and although he has gone on to work in Film and television mostly as Second Unit Director or Assistant Director he sadly does not seem to have made another animated film.

Written, directed and animated by Robert Morgan, The Cat With Hands is a multi-award-winning, 4-minute short from 2001. The project forms part of London-based Animus Film's output and was funded by Channel 4.

This film is "the story of a cat who, legend has it, longs to become human," but, based on a recurring nightmare from his sister's youth as it is, and being the product of creative mind with a certain interest in the macabre, this is about as far away from a cute kitty tale as you can get.

A devilishly dark delight well-rooted in the tradition of fairytales. Enjoy!

It was a pleasant surprise to see Anthony Lucas' BAFTA and Oscar nominated short film "The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello" appear online over at Quiet Earth. This was a favorite of Fiona's when we attended the KinoFilm festival a couple of years ago and it really is a superb film.

Leif Jonker directed what could probably be called the best splatter gore movie you've never seen. Darkness (Released later as Darkness The Vampire Version) is'nt really that far away from the early works of Sam Rami and Peter Jackson. Its a an ultra low budget classic, you really should seek out. Demon Machine was to be his next project, but sadly the years slipped by and funding meant it never to fruition. Which when you look at this promo is such a shame, it was bound to be all kinds of fun. Someone really should seek the guy out and get this made, especially now digital is a viable format.
