CHEMOTHERAPY TIMING IS OF THE ESSENCE

Many of you know I am not a big advocate of Chemotherapy. Administering toxic chemicals into your body, in the conventional manner, is unquestionably harmful to your healthy cells and immune system. The staggering side effects are akin to a "pyrrhic victory". This is not my idea of an ideal therapy. However, there is a methodology of administering Chemotherapy which may be more efficacious and less toxic than the traditional methods used by most conventional Oncologists.

If you are considering Chemotherapy as the singular or predominant treatment approach, or using Chemo in conjunction with other complementary approaches, I strongly suggest you consider a distribution and timing approach which may be superior to the conventional approach. This methodology signifcantly mitigates the negative side-effects and, simultaneously, significantly increases treatment response.

The science of Chronotherapy, i.e., timing medicines or therapies according to the patients circadian and biological clock, to optimize benefits and minimize side effects, has been shown through various studies to have material benefits with health issues such as : cholesterol, asthma, blood pressure, and arthritis. When this practice is applied directly to Cancer patients, it is also quite impactful and known as Chronomodulated Chemotherapy.

According to Dr. Keith Block of Evanston, Illinois, a highly respected Integrative Cancer Physican and the author of - "Life Over Cancer", taking advantage of time sensitive treatment when Cancer cells are most active, and most vulnerable, and when normal healthy cells are at rest and least vulnerable to toxicity, can engender significantly better results. Dr. Block states that 40 large Cancer centers in Europe use the chronomodulated approach as a primary form of treatment.

In 1996, Dr. Block became the first private Cancer Clinic in North America to use special portable pumps to deliver chemotherapy on a chronomodulated basis. He claims that there is "good research" substantiating the efficacy of this unique treatment approach.

Not all cancer types nor all Cancer patients are appropriate for this treament. Dr. Block uses a multifaceted approach to treat his Cancer Patients.

ANTI - ANGIOGENESIS, POWERFUL FOODS STARVE CANCER

Definition of Angiogenesis (University of Maryland Cancer Center) - Blood vessel formation. Tumor angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow. This is caused by the release of chemicals by the tumor.

Definition of Angiogenesis Inhibitor (University of Maryland Cancer Center) - A substance that may prevent the formation of blood vessels. In anticancer therapy, an angiogenesis inhibitor may prevent the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow.

Dr. William Li is the founder of the Angiogenesis Foundation, the world's first nonprofit organization dedicated to conquering disease using a new approach based on angiogenesis, the growth of new capillary blood vessels in the body. The Foundation has identified angiogenesis as the "common denominator" in society's most feared diseases.

All cancerous tumors, release angiogenic growth factor proteins that stimulate blood vessels to grow into the tumor providing it with oxygen and nutrients. Antiangiogenic therapies literally starve the tumor of its blood supply by interfering with this process.

Conclusion :

In conclusion, the food choices we make can have a compelling impact (anti-angiogenesis) on the blood supply, the lifeline, of malignant tumors. Some scientists state that foods with the appropriate properties may very well be tantamount to pharmaceutical drugs, in their efficacy, without any side effects.

CHANGING LIFESTYLE IMPROVES CANCER OUTCOME & CHANGES GENE EXPRESSION

Following, are excerpts from an interview conducted a few years ago with Dr. Dean Ornish, a highly respected Harvard trained Medical Doctor. His well known study of Prostate Cancer patients, published in 2005, pertains to the fact that significant “lifestyle changes” can actually change the expression of one’s genes and engender a major impact on Cancer progression.

Specifically, the study was conducted with men with a Gleason score of under 7. The lifestyle changes included dietary changes (vegan diet), supplementation, relaxation and stress reduction techniques, as well as exercise, 30 minutes per day, 6 days per week.

The following interview provides Dr Dean Ornish's insight, into the connection between lifestyle changes and the major impact of how these changes can inhibit and, in some cases, reverse Cancer and other systemic diseases.

Dr. Dean Ornish (interview) :

My scientific research papers cover a wide range, but my training is very conventional. I trained in internal medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

For the last 30 years or so, I have directed a series of clinical research studies proving that the simple choices that we make in our lives each day can have a powerful impact on our health and our well being, and much more quickly than had once been thought possible, even at a cellular level.

Recently, we conducted the first randomized, controlled clinical trial showing that the progression of early stage prostate cancer may often be stopped or even reversed by making these simple changes in diet and lifestyle. This study was done in collaboration with Dr. Peter Carroll, the chair of urology at UCSF, and Dr. William Fair, who was chair of urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at the time (now deceased).

What is true of prostate cancer is likely to be true of breast cancer as well. We also found that the progression of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity could often be prevented, improved, or even reversed in most people.

Our prostate study was a randomized control trial of men who had biopsy proven prostate cancer and who have elected not to be treated conventionally for reasons unrelated to our study. What made this interesting from a scientific standpoint is that we could take men who knew they had cancer from biopsies, randomly divide them into two groups, and have a true non-intervention control group so we could determine the effects of comprehensive lifestyle changes alone without being confounded by other treatments. You can't do that with breast cancer because almost everybody gets treated right away, so you don't know if any improvements were due to the lifestyle changes or the chemo or the radiation or the surgery.

After a year we found that PSA levels, a marker for prostate cancer, went up (worsened) in the comparison or control group, but went down significantly (improved) in the experimental group that made the lifestyle changes we recommended. The degree of change in lifestyle was directly correlated with the degree of change in their PSA levels.

We also found that the prostate tumor growth in vitro was inhibited 70 percent in the group that made these changes compared to only nine percent in the group that didn't. The inhibition of the tumor growth was itself a direct function of the degree of change in lifestyle. In other words, the more people changed, the more it directly inhibited the growth of their prostate tumors.

J. Craig Venter has shown that one way you can change your genes is by making new ones. We are finding that another way you can change your gene expression is simply by changing your lifestyle.

In May of this year, we published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Craig was the communicating editor). We found that changing lifestyle actually changes gene expression. In only three months, we found that over 500 genes were either up-regulated or down-regulated—in simple terms, turning on genes that prevent many chronic diseases, and turning off genes that cause coronary heart disease, oncogenes that are linked to breast and prostate cancer, genes that promote inflammation and oxidative stress and so on.

These findings may capture people's imagination—so often, people think there is not much they can do, what I call genetic nihilism: "Oh, it's all in my genes, what can I do?" Well, it turns out you can do a lot, more quickly than we had once realized and to a much greater degree than had been thought possible.

I'm not against the use of drugs or surgery—sometimes, they can be lifesaving—but they don't usually have to be the first choice in treating or preventing chronic diseases. One of the overriding themes of my work is finding that lifestyle changes not only work as well as drugs and surgery, but oftentimes even better. End of Interview.

Conclusion :

There has been much discussion, over the years, about the impact of "lifestyle changes" from a preventative perspective and a treatment perspective. This study offers concrete evidence supporting the conclusion that "lifestyle" does in fact have a major effect on early stage Prostate Cancer and most probably Breast Cancer and, very possibly, other Cancers as well.

DONALD YANCE - BOTANICAL AND NUTRITIONAL ONCOLOGY

I recently had the privilege of attending a conference in Scottsdale, Arizona where Donald Yance of the Mederi Foundation (www.mederifoundation.org), located in Ashland, Oregon, spoke about the significant efficacy of botanical and nutritional medicine, as a compelling therapy in the fight against Cancer.

He incorporates a collaborative, multi-faceted approach, known as ETMS, i.e., Eclectic Triphasic Medical System. ETMS is, essentially, an operating system which provides a framework with a highly customized protocol for each patient. It is tailored to help strengthen the patient and his/her immune system, and, simultaneously, to weaken the Cancer.

Donald Yance and his team have spent decades researching the innate properties of plants, their constituent agents, their specific phyto chemicals/nutrients and their effect, independently and synergistically, on the human body and, more specifically, Cancer.

His group treats all kinds of Cancers and has, purportedly, had excellent success with patients from all over the USA and abroad. I, in fact, interviewed a woman, 4 months ago, who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and told by her Doctor that if she did not undergo radiation and chemotherapy, after her lumpectomy, that she would die. After doing her research, she chose to forgo chemo and radiation, and become a patient of Donald Yances clinic. That was 9 years ago (including the birth of her second child), she is doing fine and has never had any problems.

The ETMS approach presents a multi-lens investigation to each patient. It examines the patient's constitutional energetics, endogenous and exogenous factors, and specific biomarkers from blood, pathology and tissue testing. The information is used to strategically design protocols to alter the individual's biological terrain, including gene behavior and expression, so that it is conducive to health and vitality while actively suppressing disease.

If a patient would like another Doctor or conventional Oncologist to be involved, Donald Yance will work, collaboratively with them, as well. In the case of chemotherapy, he believes chemosensitivity testing is most helpful to ascertain which chemotherapeutic agents would not be helpful, and to better identify those agents which would be most efficacious.

I could easily write a 5,000 word synopsis (and it would be a short summary !) about the work of Donald Yance, instead I suggest you explore his website.

Based upon my readings, discussions with Medical Doctors around the USA, research and investigation, I have come to the conclusion that Donald Yance may very well be a true pioneer in the realm of botanical medicine and its scientific relevance in the fight against Cancer. His research is extremely well defended. I, in fact, am currently reading one of his (unpublished, private) papers about Prostate Cancer. It is 195 pages long and has approximately 1,300 citations pointing to peer reviewed studies, substantiating his perceptions and conclusions.

His clinic has worked successfully with hundreds, if not thousands, of patients from early stage to advanced stage (stage 4) Cancer patients. The clinic has many success stories.

Whether you are following an alternative, integrative or conventional path, I would strongly suggest that you explore his clinic as a primary, integrative or complementary tool, to implement in your battle against Cancer.

CANCER CONTROL SOCIETY CONFERENCE - 2010

Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending a Cancer Conference known as the "Cancer Control Society" Conference, in Los Angeles, California. This Conference just completed its 38th consecutive year. The Convention Director and Founder is an icon of the alternative Cancer movement. Her name is Lorraine Rosenthal. I had the privilege of having lunch with Lorraine one day. I learned that she is truly dedicated to "the cause" and done a great job in promoting a wonderful Conference, educating thousands of people, and certainly directly impacting the lives of thousands of people suffering from the scourge of Cancer, over the course of 38 years !! Mr. Frank Cousineau, a Cancer pundit in his own right, is the President of the organization. He did a masterful job, everyday, as the emcee of the Conference, introducing all of the speakers. He was also the tour guide of a trip I took to 6 Mexican Cancer Clinics.

For three full days I sat and listened intently to approximately 45 speakers, including Medical Doctors (most of the speakers), Naturopaths, Scientists and Researchers, from all over the USA and around the globe. These speakers expounded, articulately, about Cancer treatments, therapies, success stories and innovative approaches to battling Cancer. The medical philosophies of most of these Medical Doctors revolves around alternative, integrative, complementary and a more "open minded" approach versus conventional methodologies offered in the fight against Cancer.

After listening to many superb pundits for 3 days, from early morning until night, I spent two more fascinating days at the conference. The fourth day included speeches by Doctors to Doctors (although I am not a Doctor I was permitted to attend). It was called a "Doctors Symposium". Some of the presentations on day 4 were redundant to the prior three days, however, there were also many significant presentations pertaining to new scientific information.

Day 5 included an eye-opening 18 hour trip to Mexico to visit 6 Cancer Clinics. Our bus took off from the hotel at 7:00 am and returned at approximately 1:00 am (It was suppose to return by 11:30 pm, but we ran into traffic and a couple other minor delays) !!

This was also a fascinating day where we met with the Directors and Doctors at these 6 clinics, listened to them talk about their Cancer fighting philosophies, watched power point slide shows and were enlightened about their attitudes, success rates and methodologies.

During the course of my 5 day conference I had the unique opportunity to have breakfasts, lunches, dinners and informal meetings, with some of the finest Cancer Doctors in the USA. I was also priviliged to meet with many people who were told years ago to - "get their affairs in order ". Despite the dire predictions of their erstwhile Doctors, these people are doing quite well. The stories of these people were nothing less than riveting. Their testimonies accentuated my belief, that despite the terminal predictions made by some conventional Doctors, Cancer patients should not give up !! There are far too many true stories of people, many years later, who have defied the odds and whom are thriving in life. Many of the people who told their success stories, had sought the care of many of the Conference speakers (Doctors) in their successful battles, despite the fact they were told by their conventional Doctors that - " ... they couldn't do anything else for them".

After attending a conference like this, I truly wish I could corral 300 Conventional Oncologists from around the USA, have them attend this very same conference, push them to engage in - "inquiring, and even spirited dialogues" - with some of the brilliant minds which I have had the privilege to listen to, and engage in scintillating dialogues, myself. If some Doctors of the conventional establishment would dare to engage in such an endeavor, perhaps ..... just perhaps ....... they might open their minds up a bit to the "non-conventional possibilities" which could help extend the lives, and even save lives, of some of their patients.

I strongly advise anyone and everyone interested in learning more about the significant treatment options available to Cancer patients, whether they be Doctors (alternative and conventional) or whether they are Stage 4 patients, like the actor Michael Douglas who is appearing in the news, often lately, or those of an earlier Stage 1 diagnosis, to attend this Conference on Labor Day weekend, next September, 2011.

Additionally, they should consider attending another excellent Conference coming up on March 3-5, 2011, in West Palm Beach, Florida founded and presented by Ann Fonfa of "The Annie Appleseed Project". Ann is another esteemed Cancer warrior, like Lorraine Rosenthal, whose Conference is similar in concept to the Cancer Control Society.

POLY MVA : LATE STAGE CANCER HELP

Dr. Merrill Garnett founded a treatment for Cancer commonly known as Poly MVA. Poly MVA is characterized as a cell nutrient, an anti-tumor agent and a non-toxic chemotherapy agent. Essentially, it is more a super nutrient or anti-oxidant than a drug. Purportedly, it protects cellular DNA and RNA.

There are not any significant clinical trials attesting to its efficacy, however, there is significant anecdotal evidence and testimonials from numerous, happy Cancer patients which has engendered serious interest in its therapeutic benefits.

Approximately 200-300 Doctors prescribe and treat their patients with Poly MVA.

It is assumed that Poly MVA is transferring an electron to the DNA. Thus the compound is described as a DNA Reductase. However, there is evidence that it can repair genes damaged by cancer. Once inside the cell, Poly MVA interferes with the particular energy metabolism (anaerobic) of the cancer cell by changing the tumor's cell properties. It is reported that no harm occurs in normal cells.

While Dr. Garnett himself does not fully understand how Poly MVA works, his 40 years of testing different formulas has yielded a compound of metals, minerals, vitamins and amino acids that is showing excellent results with late stage patients.

Poly-MVA is a uniquely formulated nutritional supplement containing a proprietary blend of Palladium and alpha-lipoic Acid (referred to as LAPd), Vitamins B1, B2 and B12, Formylmethionine, Acetyl Cystiene, and trace amounts of Molybdinum, Rhodium, and Ruthenium. It is designed to provide energy for the compromised body systems by changing the electrical potential of human cells and increasing the charge density of DNA within the cell.

With respect to Brain Cancer or Bone Marrow Cancer, it has been shown to pass through the brain barrier and also get to Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) bone marrow cancer. It has been shown to be a helpful nutritional and efficacious agent in many different kinds of Cancers. A word of warning, because of the way this product works, you need to pay close attention to the MAXIMUM doses of certain nutrients while on this medication.

According to Poly MVA experts, there are restrictions concerning prescribing it for patients : 1) No alpha lipoic acid (ALA or LA) supplementation, not even in multivitamins. The alpha lipoic acid in foods is not a problem. 2) Limit Vitamin C supplementation to 250 mg a day. This includes multivitamins and other supplements which may have Vitamin C added to them. The Vitamin C in foods is not a problem.

Using Poly-MVA With Other Treatments - One final word of caution. Poly MVA is frequently used in conjunction with other alternative cancer treatments These other treatments may have a list of supplements that should be used with them. Due to the fact that the nature of how Poly MVA works, is not well understood, it is difficult to say what other supplements or vitamins may conflict with PolyMVA. Therefore, It is very important to ask the vendor of Poly MVA what supplements and foods potentially negate the effects of PolyMVA.

As always, be vigilant in designing the totality of your Cancer fighting regimen.

CANCER PATIENTS - DO NOT BECOME COMPLACENT !

I have read the stories ... I have met the people ... if you have ever been diagnosed with Cancer, no matter what Stage of Cancer, no matter when, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT become complacent, cavalier or over confident that you are cured.

When a Doctor says you are "cancer free", he or she is really saying that the diagnostic tools, and technology available, cannot measure any evidence of Cancer in your body at the time of that test. Beware, it does not mean that you do not have microscopic cancer cells lurking within your body, which cannot be seen or measured by our medical testing abilities.

Quite frequently, Cancer patients are told they are Cancer free and within a year or two, the Cancer comes back with a vengeance.

To keep Cancer at bay, it is critical that you incorporate a diet which nourishes your body to strengthen your immune system and refrain from eating or drinking foods which feeds Cancer cells (sugar, fructose, etc. - please see my Blog - "Cancers Sweet Tooth- Sugar"). There are also many types of vitamins, herbs and dietary supplements which purportedly help fight Cancer and which may be taken to implement a preventative and proactive Cancer fighting strategy. Additionally, there are various detoxification strategies which should be investigated to rid the body of impurities. Exercise, on a regular basis is also very important.

Essentially, again, do not become complacent !! The fact that you "had" Cancer should be taken as a WARNING SIGN that you need to become absolutely vigilant in living a very healthy lifestyle. Become aware of your surrounding environment, your diet and ongoing stress levels. I urge you to "absolutely change your life" and treat your body, your personal "sanctum santorum", with the absolute respect it deserves, everyday. Start right now !!

COLEY'S TOXINS

Dr. William B. Coley a Harvard Medical School graduate, inadvertently stumbled upon, what would become a major Cancer treatment around the turn of the century (around 1900). As the Chief of the Bone Cancer Department at NY Memorial Hospital (which later became Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) he began to use a dead mixture of bacteria which he would inject into or around the tumor of a Cancer patient. This injection (vaccine) would engender a significant fever (aka - "fever shot") in the range of 103-105 degrees, which in turn would stimulate the immune system. The immune system, in reaction to the vaccine, would attack the Cancer with startling, excellent results.

For many years, the toxins were manufactured by Parke - Davis Company and accepted as a serious Cancer treatment by the American Medical Association (AMA).

After Coley's death in 1936, his son continued to prescribe and use the treatment for hi patients, until 1963. In 1963, the FDA ("Food and Drug Administration") promulgated new, strict regulations which rendered Coley's Toxins illegal. The FDA considered the treatment to be the introduction of a "new drug" even though it had been around for well over 50 years !!

Today, the treatment is illegal in the USA, but it is used effectively in many other countries, such as : China, Mexico, Central America, Germany and others.

According to the Cancer pundit Ralph Moss - " Coley's toxins were, and are, among the most promising Cancer treatments ever devised."

EVIDENCE BASED CANCER CONFERENCE - IMPRESSIVE !!

For a few days at the beginning of January, last month (of 2010), I attended an Evidence Based Cancer Conference in West Palm Beach, Florida. I went to the conference with a bit of skepticism about the veracity of what I would hear as well as the credentials and motivations of the presenters. The intent of the conference was to enlighten its attendees and present new information about treatments, therapies and cancer fighting agents.

The attendees were a mixture of Doctors, Hospital administrators, Nurses, Nutritional Experts, Cancer Advocates, numerous Cancer patients and many others with an interest in the Cancer industry. I was quite impressed with the sophistication of the attendees, and, quite frankly, I don't impress easily ....

The presenters were highly credentialed, articulate and, again, extremely impressive. It was interesting to note, that In the course of their presentations, most Doctors and other healthcare practitioners, scientists and pundits were well defended in citing many specific peer reviewed studies corroborating their suggested treatments. Essentially, they stated that the "science" exists which supported their conclusions and associated treatments, which in turn were were substantiated by "real results". Many cases of actual clinical results were represented by the Doctors. (If you wonder why some of these treatments are ignored within the conventional establishment, see my prior blog post entitled "Patents and Profits over Patients-Drug Companies pass on Promising Drugs")

I was a veritable sponge over the course of several days as I absorbed the many words of wisdom spoken by these progressive Cancer experts. It was interesting to note that many of the Medical Doctors had begun their careers comfortably ensconced in the traditional, conventional medical establishment, however, over time they came to recognize that many of the conventional protocols did not work very effectively. Collectively, they experienced major transformations in their medical and philosophical perspectives about how to strengthen the body and, simultaneously, fight Cancer. Many of these Doctors and scientists graduated from some of the most prestigious Medical Institutions in the USA, e.g., Harvard, Columbia, Vanderbilt, etc. These people are not "quacks", I believe they are "cutting edge". I recognized that these kinds of transformations have taken "courage" as some of them have been ridiculed by their erstwhile conventional medical colleagues. I was privileged to have had numerous meetings via breakfast, lunch and dinners with some of these pundits.

Again, this was a superb Conference sponsored by Ann Fonfa, a Cancer survivor and thriver, originally from NYC who is the founder and operator of an excellent Cancer information site found at - www.annieappleseedproject.org

If anyone has a serous interest in the Conference, from any perspective, as a patient or healthcare practitioner, or if you are just interested in learning about cutting edge, progressive Cancer treatments, this is a must Conference to attend !

The next conference will be held March 3-5, 2011, in West Palm Beach, Florida. I'll see you there !
