7.5.2012Low level employmentI always have conflicts, and sometimes they are really complex. The latest one that I seem to be aware of greatly is the servants’ issue. Should we have or not have servants? Why should a person do your dirty work that even you wouldn’t like to do? For eg clean your toilets, your used dishes, or look after a pukey, whiney, crying baby? I hate to subject a certain class of people to very lowly, menial jobs, and I always am very prompt in tipping my servants, a trait that my mum hates. So, the moot question is, should we have servants do our garbage, janitor, sweeping, mopping jobs? Or should there be employment only for dishwashing in machines, laundry in the machine, ironing, babysitting after 5 years etc? I think I would like all types of people to be freed of low level jobs. So, if you have to clean your toilet, you do so, wearing gloves and using all that you need instead of employing a person to do so. Anyway, employing kids in India has become an offence, but there are still people who work the whole day on labor charges of Rs 1000, Rs 3000 per month, when the bureau charges are Rs 6000 pm. The most terrible truth that goes with this type of employment is that it is a vicious family trait. So, even the sons and daughters of these people who can never make it even to middle class status end up doing what their forefathers did. We all hate slavishness, so why do we continue to employ slaves? No one has the right to subject anyone to a life of lowly living, even if the person has no education, is disabled or has severe problems and crises. It’s a tragedy that people who talk smooth and show concern are the ones who make all kinds of manipulations etc in the law to favor their comfort and luxurious lifestyle.  Employ manpower for only technically doable jobs and do your own filthy ones is my message for the educated public of India. Did you know that Gandhiji made his wife Kasturba clean the toilets of his home and the ashram? Instead of just jabbering, set the right example, and do your own dirty work.
