For a Ferrari enthusiast and great musician like Eric Clapton a one-off car just had to be produced. ?Designed by the Centro Stile Ferrari in collaboration with Pininfarina and the engineers from Maranello, the SP12 EC was created as homage to Clapton’s career and his long lasting experience as a Ferrari owner.
The world-famous guitar player has been attached to one particular Ferrari model: the 512 BB, of which he has owned three over the years. So his desire was to drive a car inspired by this model, with influences from the multi-award winning 458 Italia. Exclusively in the latest issue of the Ferrari Official Magazine Eric Clapton talks about his passion and how the idea of a one-off car was born.
Meticulous attention in terms of style and technology was paid to the proportions and architecture of the SP12 EC – which is part of Ferrari’s One-Off Programme – making this exceptional car even more significant. Just like music is created, applying the right notes in the right places to build a musical score, so was the creative process behind the SP12 EC.

BARCELONA, Spain (May 23, 2012) – Today Nissan announced that a 100% electric compact van, the e-NV200, will go into production at its Barcelona plant in the 2013 Financial Year.
The new model will be based on the existing award-winning NV200 currently produced at the plant and will be an important and innovative addition to Nissan’s global range of light commercial vehicles (LCV’s).
e-NV200 will become Nissan’s second all-electric vehicle (EV) following the launch of the multi-award winning Nissan LEAF in 2010, underlining Nissan’s long-term commitment to zero emission mobility.
The new model, which represents €41 million investment by Nissan in its Barcelona facility, is expected to create around 700 new jobs at the plant and throughout its local supplier base.
As the sole producer of e-NV200, Barcelona will supply world markets highlighting the growing competitiveness of Nissan’s Spanish industrial operations. Last week a new medium duty truck was allocated to Nissan’s Avila Plant in central Spain.
e-NV200 will provide both businesses and families with functional and roomy interior space and will retain the host of innovative and practical features of the current NV200 line up combined with the most advanced powertrain components of the Nissan LEAF.
This will deliver a driving range similar to the Nissan LEAF on a single charge and similar performance, together with best in class running and maintenance costs.
Andy Palmer, Nissan Executive Vice President, said: “e-NV200 represents a genuine breakthrough in commercial vehicles and further underlines Nissan’s leadership within the electric vehicle segment.
“The new model will offer all the spaciousness, versatility and practicality of a traditionally powered compact van, but with zero CO2 emission at the point of use and provides outstanding driving experience that is unique to EV’s.
“Crucially, it will also offer class-leading running and maintenance costs which makes it an exceptionally attractive proposition to both businesses and families.”
e-NV200 will also make a significant contribution to Nissan’s aim of becoming the world’s largest LCV manufacturer by 2016 as a key pillar of the Nissan Power 88 mid-term plan.
Last year Nissan achieved an historic milestone of selling more than one million LCV’s worldwide in a single year.

The current NV200 line up has already sold around 100,000 units. Its popularity led it to be chosen as the next generation New York City ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’ following a rigorous selection process.
Currently, intensive evaluations of prototype NV200-based electric vehicles are being carried out in Europe. Trials will continue in coming months in order to provide real-world feedback from the most demanding usage. Feedback will help Nissan to fulfill exact customer requirements ahead of the start of production expected in FY13.

Paraphrasing a classic quote – “With great power comes the need for great control” – the engineers at Ford’s Special Vehicles Team have stepped up to the plate to manage the massive output of the 2013 Shelby GT500.

Whether a driver is a track-day veteran or getting his first ultra-high-performance sports car, the new launch control system on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will help ensure he gets smooth, consistent and fast starts every time.

Uncontrolled wheel spin is generally undesirable, whether commuting to work or racing away from the Christmas tree on a Friday night at the drag strip. Both safety and performance suffer when the wheels can’t get enough grip on the road. However, properly regulated, some wheel slip can be your friend.

“Launch control is essentially a special mode of the traction control system that integrates the brake and engine management systems to keep the tires balanced on the peak of the mu-slip curve in order to achieve maximum thrust,” explains John Pfeiffer, senior engineer, SVT Vehicle Engineering. “With so much more power and torque on tap from the new 5.8-liter V8, launch control makes it easier for drivers to take advantage of the performance.”

With launch control enabled, the driver just has to press the accelerator pedal to the floor and then smoothly and quickly release the clutch pedal just as he normally would when executing a clean start. The difference is that the electronics will automatically hold the engine steady at the desired speed and manage the rear brakes to allow the optimum amount of wheel slip for maximum traction.

“We recognize not every driver has the same style, and surface, tire and climate conditions vary,” said Eddie Khan, SVT Engineering supervisor. “Most of our competitors’ launch control systems have a fixed engine launch speed. We’ve given Shelby GT500 drivers the ability to adjust the engine speed to achieve best and most consistent performance, no matter where and when they drive.”

Shelby GT500 drivers can enable launch control in two ways – either through Track AppsTM on the 4.2-inch LCD in the instrument cluster or simply by tapping a switch on the left side of the instrument panel. When using the Track Apps screen, drivers can also adjust the desired engine speed for the launch in 100 rpm increments from 3,000 to 4,500 rpm. When first getting accustomed to launch control or if the pavement is cooler, a lower speed may be more appropriate. Switching to racing tires or running in an autocross event on a warm Saturday morning may call for a launch speed closer to the upper end of the range.

Once the desired engine speed has been set, launch control can be toggled on or off by tapping the instrument panel switch – more convenient than the intricate multistep process required on many other vehicles. After the launch control has been enabled or disabled, it retains that mode even after the engine has been switched off and restarted, something drag racers frequently have to do as they slowly make their way through the lines to the next quarter-mile pass.

“We developed this system to enable 90 percent of drivers to be able to achieve very fast, smooth and consistent starts with the Shelby GT500 regardless of their skill level,” said Khan. “Experienced drag racers may be able to get away slightly quicker, but chances are they won’t be as consistent.”

Veteran drag racers will find the Shelby GT500 also gives them extra flexibility. Switching off the traction control while the launch control is on produces an rpm-only mode that engine calibration engineer Tom Siebyla has tuned to keep the engine speed rock-steady with the electronic throttle and ignition without scrubbing off any speed with the brakes. Autocrossers or track-day racers can also mix and match the normal, sport and off modes of the stability control with the launch control to achieve the degree of sliding or control that best suits the conditions or their personal driving style.

For those times when there isn’t enough grip to use launch control effectively, such as dust or moisture on the pavement, Ford electronic brake control development engineer Dan Dunn has built smarts into the launch control that enable it to automatically switch off and revert to traction control.

“It’s not as intrusive as some TC systems have been in the past,” added Khan. “We wanted to help the driver make consistent starts without getting in the way.”

Launch control won’t do the driving, but it is a tool to help drivers extract consistent high performance from the most powerful production Mustang ever.

“For drivers who want to have some fun at their local drag strip with a stock machine, the 2013 Shelby GT500 is the ultimate bracket racer,” said Khan. “We’ve given our drivers the ability to exert control over all the power and torque this Mustang can produce.”

4.4 Million Altimas Later, Another First: All-New, 2013 Nissan Altima Begins Production in Tennessee

SMYRNA, Tenn. – It has been 20 years since the first Nissan Altima rolled off the line in Smyrna. Today, more than 4.4 million Altimas later, Nissan celebrates another milestone: production of the top-selling vehicle’s fifth generation.
The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima, which has been produced at Nissan’s Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant since the first generation rolled off the line in 1992, is the first of five all-new Nissan vehicles coming in the next 15 months. The most innovative Altima yet, the fifth-generation model builds on its strong reputation for quality and reliability and adds new levels of innovation, fuel-efficiency, dynamic performance and premium style.

Mladá Boleslav/Reifnitz, May 15, 2012 – At the largest tuning event featuring vehicles of the Volkswagen Group, ŠKODA AUTO will show exciting concept cars. At an exhibition area of more than 600 m², the concept cars “ŠKODA Citigo Rally” and “ŠKODA Citigo DJ Car” will make their first appearance. In the evening, an international top DJ will perform on the center stage of the ŠKODA concert area. Tomorrow, seven teams will already set out from Prague with ŠKODA vehicles and head toward Lake Wörthersee in Austria.

The village of Reifnitz is a traditional meeting place for tuning fans. Every year in May, one may experience the pure excitement about automobiles, this year being the 31st time the meet is held. This meet is counted among the largest and most important events of its kind. As the third largest brand of the Volkswagen Group, ŠKODA presents new model highlights to fans as well. For the concert highlight in the evening, ŠKODA has created a special surprise. The music produced by the almost 100,000 Watt strong sound equipment will be mixed by a DJ in a “ŠKODA DJ Car”. This vehicle was especially designed by the ŠKODA design team for the car show at Lake Wörthersee. A team of journalists and Czech celebrities in special ŠKODA models will drive from Prague to the foothills of the Austrian Alps – among them the two Škoda rally champions Jan Kopecký and Juho Hänninen.

“They say the driver’s seat has the best view of Lake Wörthersee,” says Jan Kopecký, ŠKODA Motorsport factory driver. “That’s why I’m excited to be able to experience in person the legendary atmosphere at Lake Wörthersee this year.”

The creations based on the new ŠKODA Citigo are sure to fascinate attendees at ŠKODA’s stand in Reifnitz. The design of the “ŠKODA Citigo Rally” takes its dynamics from ŠKODA rally cars. Its front end impresses with a massive bumper as well as a generous air intake and spoiler. The car’s rear end is marked by a centrally positioned exhaust end pipe and the down-force wing extending the car’s roofline. Low-profile tires on forged 18-inch rims promise stability and uncompromising traction.

Besides the “ŠKODA Citigo Rally”, another highlight is the appearance of the “ŠKODA Citigo DJ Car”. Its rear end widens behind the ‘B’ pillars to create an open stage for the DJ inside the car. The “ŠKODA Citigo DJ Car” will see live action when DJs put on dance music for several thousands of fans on the center stage at night.

The drive from Prague to Lake Wörthersee is not about a fast highway trip down to Austria: Instead, participants such as the ŠKODA rally stars as well as Czech celebrities will have to perform various tasks during the course of the trip. Dear Fellow Shareholders,
We are pleased to report that we have nearly completed all regulatory approvals and certifications required to begin delivery of Model S to our customers in the United States. Thus, we anticipate that initial deliveries will begin in June, ahead of our announced schedule of July.
On the Powertrain side of our business, we completed the Toyota RAV4 EV development program in Q1 and started deliveries of production components, also ahead of schedule. The RAV4 EV marries the efficiency of an EV with the versatility of an SUV – in fact it is the only electric SUV on the market. With the largest battery pack of any non-premium EV, it is expected to have a city range of almost 170 miles, more than 60% above the Nissan Leaf. The electric RAV4 is a high performance version of the RAV4 with outstanding acceleration and excellent handling due to the low center of gravity afforded by the floor mounted battery pack.
We recently signed an agreement with Daimler to create an entire electric powertrain for a new Mercedes-Benz EV, thus formalizing the joint effort kicked off in Q4 last year. This program is expected to exceed in value the sum of all powertrain agreements signed in Tesla history. Producing at this expected volume will allow for economies of scale that give the resulting vehicle a cost of ownership that is on par with its gasoline equivalent.
Model S Deliveries to Begin in June
All aspects of the Model S program remain on track to commence deliveries in June. The Tesla Factory is
producing vehicles at a steadily increasing rate, and so far this year we have built about 50 Beta and about 30 Release Candidate prototypes. All these vehicles are dedicated to a comprehensive testing program, including crash and safety testing, systems integration, reliability testing, and quality audits.
Model S has now been fully certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of California. We have also successfully completed almost all of the crash testing required under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act using our Release Candidate prototypes. Once we
complete and document the tests, we will be able to sell our vehicles in the United States. This leaves us confident we can begin Model S customer deliveries in June, ahead of our announced schedule of July.

We expect the safety rating of Model S will be independently determined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other groups. Under NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program Robotic Installation of Panoramic Roof(NCAP), selected cars are independently purchased and crash tested. NHTSA then assigns “star ratings” to tested cars using the NCAP standards. Based on our internal crash tests and consistent with these published standards, we believe Model S will achieve NHTSA’s top, 5-star, rating. Compliance testing for global markets continues and will be announced as achieved.
Delivering the first few customer cars in June highlights the fact that Model S will be fully compliant and available for purchase in the U.S. These cars will carry customer, rather than manufacturer, license plates, signifying that they are fully homologated and completely street legal. We plan to continue making customer deliveries on a slow, methodical ramp, and remain confident in our target of 5,000 vehicle deliveries by year end.

PEUGEOT SPORT ANNOUNCES NEW 208 R2 RALLY CAR

To follow and build on the successful achievements with the emblematic 205, 206, 207, Peugeot has applied its expertise, utilising the ‘spirit of re-generation’ that combines all of their best features to produce the Peugeot 208.
Peugeot Sport reveals the first of three 208-evolved competition cars, as the productioncar begins to go on sale across Europe.
The first competition version revealed is the 208 ‘R2′ which will be campaigned as a ‘zero’car on this month’s Tour de Corse in the hands of Stéphane Sarrazin and BenjaminVeillas.
The Competition versions of the 208
Development of the competition versions of the Peugeot 208 has been in operation since the car was announced in 2011, and the first version to be released is the R2 which will provide a glimpse of its potential at next week’s Tour de Corse (May 10-12) in France. Two other motor sport derivatives of the 208 will see the light of day before the end of 2012, beginning with the circuit version which features a specification very similar to that of the R2. The circuit version will be followed by the eagerly-awaited 208 which complies with the FIA’s R5 regulations and which will go on to take over from the successful 207 Super 2000 rally car at national and international level. It is due to be unveiled in September.
Creation of an icon
“With the 208, Peugeot has given itself the means to create a new motoring icon,” noted Peugeot’s Range Director Laurent Blanchet at the model’s launch. “The 208 carries over the successful spirit of the 205 and the 206, plus the functionality of the 207 in a thoroughly modern package,” added Xavier Peugeot, the Brand’s Product Director. Through the livery of the R2, Peugeot’s stylists have sought to mark the launch of the 208′s competition line-up by highlighting the model’s emotional appeal and resolutely modern lines.
The 208 R2 will appear in this livery when it serves as ‘zero’ car for next week’s Tour de Corse (May 10-12), the fourth round of the 2012 Intercontinental Rallye Challenge. Regular Peugeot Sport driver Stéphane Sarrazin and co-driver Benjamin Veillas will drive the hot hatch ahead of the field at the French event before staying on in Corsica for a week of testing after the rally.
208 R2: poised to become a new benchmark in a highly competitive market
The R2 is an indispensable part of the model line-up it is destined to spearhead. Affordable and competitive, it stands out as the ideal choice for those who want to get their first taste of rallying or simply enjoy their passion. The 208 R2 ran for the first time at the end of 2011 and is destined to replace the existing 207 RC Rallye not only as star of the Brand’s ‘Volant’ single make series but also as a challenger for class success at national and international level. Ford, Renault and Citroën all have R2 cars, but Peugeot Sport has set itself the target of becoming the class’s new benchmark in terms of both performance and low competing costs. Careful attention was also paid to reliability, notably with regard to its transmission, electrics and electronics. Another aim was to make life easier for owners by minimising the number of parts required to convert the car from gravel- to asphalt-spec, and vice-versa. This was made possible by using as many shared parts and assemblies as possible for the two versions and by benefiting from the PSA group’s customer competition catalogue.
‘Regenerated’ styling
Through its compact forms, short overhangs and flowing transition between the bonnet and windscreen pillars, the 208 is a fresh interpretation of the Brand’s styling cues, both in terms of their underlying principles and in the details.
The new signature front end is particularly charismatic, while its feline looks are more modern, status-enhancing and refined. It comes across as assertive yet lively, warm yet racy, hi-tech yet friendly, and natural yet sophisticated.
Technical ‘regeneration’, described by 208 R2′s project leader, Yann Goraguer:
Lightweight:”The 208′s bodyshell is approximately 40kg lighter than that of the 207. In addition, the 208′s overall volumes are one of the R2′s chief strengths, while its long wheelbase ensures excellent stability. Weight-saving work has enabled us to bring down the centre of gravity further, optimise where the weight is located and reduce the intrinsically low inertia of this car with its short overhangs. These features combine to provide the 208 R2 with outstanding road holding.”
Modern structure: “The 208 R2′s strengthened shell incorporates a multi-point, welded roll cage which marks a real step forward in terms of safety compared to rival roll cages thanks to a new manufacturing process.”
Modern engine: To comply with the regulations, Peugeot Sport has developed for the 208 R2 a brand new, naturally-aspirated, 1600cc engine based on the 1.6 VTi available for certain versions of the 208 road car.
“For the competition version of this engine, we started from a clean sheet of paper and achieved the 185hp specified in the brief. At the same time, we succeeded in maintaining the low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions that are features of the original engine. This extremely modern powerplant comes with variable valve timing (VVT) for the intake and exhaust. The Group R regulations specify that the valves must be of the same size as those of the standard engine. Like its air intake dimensions, the 1.6 VTi’s valves are smaller than those of the former 1.6 unit. The main factors which influence performance in the case of a normally-aspirated engine are its valves and intake, so we worked closely with Sodemo to make our new engine driver-friendly by focusing on flexibility rather than on peak power which often goes unused in rallying. We achieved this thanks to the use of VVT. The 208 R2 kits will be sold with the engine built, run-in and checked on the dyno.”
Innovative gearbox: “The gearbox, too, is new. The 208 R2 is equipped with a five-speed, manual, sequential gearbox with the lever mounted on the steering column. The gearshift system is identical to that of the 207 S2000 and represents a significant evolution for a car of this class in which the original gearshift is more conventionally mounted on the floor. The lever is much shorter and also positioned higher, while the shift is more direct and precise because it is in line with the gearbox. The system is much more rigid since it is shorter and lighter. The gearbox itself features innovative cooling with an air duct at the front of the car which channels cooling air to fins built into the front part of the casing which help dissipate heat and cool the oil.”
Reduced fuel consumption: The lower weight, carefully designed aerodynamics and naturally-aspirated engine have resulted in a significant fuel consumption saving compared to the 207 RC Rallye. This makes an appreciable contribution to keeping the costs of competing to a minimum.
Suspension performance: “We have carried over the proven three-way adjustable dampers, plus a new, bespoke adjustable hydraulic bump stop which has been developed specially in association with our supplier Öhlins. The R2 also features a specific wishbone arrangement which increases suspension travel. This, in turn, improves traction and is positive for the car’s performance.”
Hydraulic steering: “The 208 R2′s steering is specific, too. We have switched from the standard car’s electric power steering to a hydraulic system, combined with a higher-ratio hydraulic rack for greater precision and enhanced comfort in response to demand from the drivers. The use of a hydraulic system also permits more accurate feedback of information, notably on loose surfaces.”
Single calliper brakes: “The diameter of the brake discs is dictated by the regulations. As wear parts, they need to be effective and reliable, but also relatively economical. To simplify the ordering and management of parts and to facilitate the conversion from gravel- to asphalt-spec (and vice-versa), we have opted for a single Alcon calliper plus standard, re-machined discs. Thanks to the floating calliper arrangement, the conversion from gravel- to asphalt-spec only requires the calliper mount to be changed.”
Clutch:the 184mm-diameter single clutch plate arrangement is dictated by the regulations. Peugeot Sport specifies an Alcon plate for the R2.
Wheels:the wheels are also covered by strict regulations regarding their width, diameter and weight.
Tyres:All the 208 R2 development work was done on tyres provided by Michelin, Peugeot’s Sport partner.
Production and motor sport: close collaboration to minimise competing costs
The 208 represents a new generation of car, while Peugeot Sport has collaborated with PSA group experts to make the necessary modifications for motor sport use in compliance with the regulations. “Throughout the process, we worked closely with the group’s different technical departments,” says Alexis Avril, Customer Competition Manager. “At the beginning of a project like this, in-house skills and expertise allow you to make swifter progress when developing certain advanced solutions. The 208 R2′s transmission, for example, is made entirely by PSA to a brief drawn up especially for competition purposes. We also benefited from the savoir-faire and experience of the Brand’s series production experts in fields like materials, surface treatment and processes. The 208 features a new, modern powertrain, so we spent a great deal of time with the firm’s specialists during the 208 R2′s different development phases. Last but not least, as a function of the regulations and in order to minimise costs, we called frequently on our colleagues to source the most suitable parts from the catalogue of the series production version.”

The gravel and asphalt versions of the 208 R2 will both be available in kit form for a price of €37.500net (c£30,500). This price includes a fully-built engine. It will also be possible to acquire the 208 R2 in fully built form (gravel or asphalt version) for €57.500net (c£46,700).
Two kits will be available to convert the asphalt version of the car to gravel trim, or the gravel version of the car to asphalt trim.
