I mostly agree. The design does a good job of balancing kid appeal with a university template, but I think they could have done a better job of separating the audiences and speaking more directly to them. The kid pages were wordy and buried a lot of the interactive content on the site. I think they missed an opportunity there. They seem to have done a better job on the teacher sections.
by stewart

I'd agree with @rolaine although the home page looks like all of the other pages on the site. The template works well for the sub-pages, but could use a little more work to set the homepage apart and draw you into the rest of the site.

@ericstoller I didn't encounter any auto-playing videos. Was it on the homepage or an internal page?
by stewart

Mississippi College - Marked by Momentum - 2008-09 President's Report

Great photography can instantly woo an audience and this is clearly what Mississippi College's intention. Although the photos grabbed attention, the way they were used made the content secondary in hierarchy of everything. The site is a President's Report- the content should be of the most importance, using photos only to emphasize or enhance the copy. The persuasion should be through the content and not through the photos. More attention to copy and the way it's presented (styling with fonts) will make this site more balanced.
by rolaine

There are a lot of things I like about this site, though I hate it when a site has a fairly prominent navigation to a page that says "content coming soon..." (there are a few under the "Explore the Island" section. I do appreciate how upfront they are with the costs, as that is becoming as increasingly important consideration for students, and too many higher ed sites bury that information, in my opinion.

Overall, though, I think it's bold design, and I like it. :)
by dturner

Love this! Excellent way of engaging students and having students tell real stories, instead of typical testimonials found on many higher-ed sites. Love the interactivity here as well!

Wondering though, how they choose the bloggers? Is there an incentive giving out to get students to blog? Is it a contest to choose the right bloggers? Are they voted in by their peers? Would help to know that on the site... :)
by katral
