National Arts in Education Week

Celebrate Arts in Education Week -- September 12-18, 2010

Music educators everywhere are urged to participate in the observance and promotion of the newly-created Arts in Education Week – September 12-18, 2010. This week was created by resolution of the U.S. House of Representatives in July. And this opportunity for advocacy is heightened by the fact that the week coincides with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's "Courage in the Classroom" Back to School tour, which is broadly themed around education as a civil right.

We know that for today's students to succeed tomorrow, they need a comprehensive education that includes music taught by exemplary music educators, so we can use this opportunity to try new classroom ideas with students and to make the point that music education is itself a right worth fighting for.

Here are some ways you, your students, and your community can share the joy and communicate the importance of music education!

Advocate

Use MENC’s advocacy resources, including downloadable brochures and sample speeches, to “make the case” for school music programs. Use our “Letter to the Editor” template to inform your community’s newspaper of your support for music in school and nationwide.

Events

National Anthem Day – On September 14, plan a schoolwide sing of “The Star Spangled Banner” to celebrate the penning of our national anthem by Francis Scott Key and to demonstrate the the important role of music in school. Or sing the national anthem on Constitution Day - September 17, to celebrate the anniversary of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1789.

Activities

Follow Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on his “Courage in the Classroom: Honoring America's Teachers” tour as he travels the country, honoring teachers, listening to students and parents, and celebrating the successes along the way.

Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) -- The official celebration is in March, but this resource of tried and true activities is a treasure trove of celebrations of the arts. Have a talent show, make collages of musical instruments, write a poem on favorite music or musicians, and more.

Sponsored by the University of Bremen, Bremen, Germany in partnership with the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida and cosponsored by MENC.

Music educators worldwide are interested in assessment. This symposium will bring together global assessment leaders to discuss their work. Organizing chairs are Timothy S. Brophy, University of Florida and Andreas Lehmann-Wermser, University of Bremen. The symposium topic is “The Culture of Shared Practice: Music Assessment across Cultures and Continents.” Keynote speakers include Gary McPherson, University of Melbourne, Australia; Maud Hickey, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and Franz Nierman, University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, Austria.

Urban Music Leadership Conference

National Urban Music Leadership Conference
October 21-23, Norfolk, VA

The National Urban Music Leadership Conference (UMLC) meets October 21–23 in Norfolk, Virginia. The Norfolk Public Schools serve as host school system and student performances will take place throughout the conference. Visits to local school music programs also are planned.

Symposium topics include mentoring, developing district-wide music in an urban setting, visibility for music programs and working with arts partners.

The National Urban Music Leadership Conference is composed of large urban school district music administrators, supervisors, curriculum managers of the fine arts, music teachers and others who are interested in improving the teaching, learning process and management of arts programs in large urban districts.

Beth Hazlette, senior music coordinator for the Norfolk schools, is conference chair, while Natalie Ozeas, School of Music, Carnegie Mellon School University, is UMLC national chair.

For Vocal/instrumental K–12 teachers, K–8 classroom teachers, and Music Education/Musicology/Ethnomusicology professors.

MENC and the University of Tennessee School of Music co-sponsor the National Symposium on Multicultural Music October 6–9 in Knoxville. The biennial conference will feature workshop, research and performance sessions, and music and folk dancing from a variety of cultures: African, African American, Appalachian, Caribbean, Chinese, Irish, Iraqi, Korean, Latin American, Mexican American, Native American, Scottish, and others. The conference brings together specialists in multicultural music. Research sessions will emphasize the role of music in culture within its historical context. The researchers also will reflect the diversity of the field and highlight new innovations in the study of music cultures.

Summer Teaching Guitar Workshops

Sign up for Summer Teaching Guitar Workshops around the nation -- exclusively for MENC members!

Guitar is the answer for students who love making music but may not wish to take part in a traditional music performance program. In these Teaching Guitar Workshops, MENC members will learn how to establish a guitar program or bring new energy to their general music classes or guitar classes. The program includes:

One week of instruction
A free guitar to take back to your school
Various guitar publications and accessories
Three graduate college credits from Duquesne University

GAMA (Guitar & Accessories Marketing Association) and its partners, NAMM (International Music Products Association) and MENC (The National Association for Music Education) have already helped thousands of teachers and 700,000+ students put guitar education in a class by itself. The MENC National Executive Board has designated the MENC headquarters building in Reston, Virginia as "The National Center for Music Education."

As a service and opportunity to MENC members, The National Center for Music Education is available for activities that support MENC's mission and goals and engage and encourage the MENC Strategic Plan. Requests will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis and reviewed for further consideration prior to scheduling. Selected activities will be scheduled based on space availability, and financial obligations will be involved.

Festival Disney is a positive and educationally meaningful festival experience for talented middle, junior high and high school performers. Specially selected, national adjudicators provide detailed, positive feedback to all ensembles through written and recorded comments, as well as personalized feedback clinics following concert performances. Directors can choose competitive and non-competitive adjudication options.

Caitlin Merie Hurrey Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament

On June 24, 2010, the 6th annual “Caitlin Classic” will kick off Music Education Week with a day of golf, other contests of skill on the links, a barbecue, and the chance to win any number of great raffle prizes. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Caitlin Merie Hurrey Scholarship Fund at MENC.

The Caitlin Merie Hurrey Scholarship Fund was established as a memorial to the daughter of Earl Hurrey, Deputy Executive Director of MENC: The National Association for Music Education. Caitlin was a student at Huntingtown Elementary School. She loved to play in the band, sing in the chorus, and wanted to be a teacher when she grew up.

The Fund awards four scholarships annually to:

A high school senior planning to attend an accredited college or university who has a personal connection to Huntingtown Elementary School.
A son/daughter of an MENC member planning to attend an accredited college or university.
An MENC collegiate senior for professional development.
A son/daughter of an active-duty or retired member of one of the U.S. military music ensembles.
