Active shooting incident in Midland, Texas, leaves 1 dead, multiple others injured

At least one person is dead and others were injured in an active shooting situation while the suspect has barricaded themselves inside a building in downtown Midland, Texas, Midland Mayor Lori Blong said in a Friday press conference.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong said there were 11 victims in total.

The FBI is aware of the shooting and has agents from its Midland satellite office on scene, a bureau source told Fox News Digital.

Midland Memorial Hospital said it had received nine victims from the shooting, with four are in the operating room and five considered stable. The hospital's main campus went on lockdown for nearly two hours due to the shooting, and the emergency department continues to be locked down.

Austin Metcalf family facing threats, financial strain as Karmelo Anthony fundraising draws scrutiny

As convicted killer Karmelo Anthony's family faces questions over hundreds of thousands of dollars raised through online fundraisers, the father of slain Texas teenager Austin Metcalf says his family is still dealing with death threats, harassment and the emotional fallout of the murder more than a year later.

Metcalf's father, Jeff, told Fox News Digital that he and other members of his family continue to receive threatening messages following Anthony's conviction and sentencing.

"I get text messages and voicemails that are just vile, disgusting things," Metcalf said on Thursday. "I woke up this morning. There's three of them already."

Metcalf said the threats have also targeted those closest to him.

"Someone threatened Hunter's life when we were in the courthouse," he said, referring to Austin's twin brother.

The Frisco Police Department confirmed to Fox News that it is "tracking several online threats made against the Metcalf family."

"At this time, we are receiving numerous reports from concerned citizens and are actively gathering information while investigating each of these threats," police said. "No arrests have been made at this point; however, these investigations take time, and arrests are possible as the cases develop.

"For now, we have increased patrols in the area of the Metcalf residence to ensure their safety and the safety of our community while we continue to investigate. We encourage anyone who observes a direct threat to report it through our app, Tip411, or by calling our non-emergency number at 972-292-6010."

The strain has taken a significant toll on the Metcalf family.

"It has drained me emotionally, physically, spiritually, financially," Metcalf said.

He said the hostility has extended beyond his immediate family.

He recalled an incident after court proceedings in which some of Austin's friends were confronted while walking to their vehicle.

"They were surrounded by a mob of people screaming, 'F--- off,' and, 'You're going to wind up like Austin,' 'We're going to kill you,'" Metcalf said.

"These are high school-age children, 17-, 18-year-old kids," he said of his son's friends. "They were in tears."

Metcalf said the focus of the public debate has often overlooked the young people who witnessed Austin's killing and continue to live with the trauma.

"No one wants to really talk about, what about the kids who were there who saw it?" he said. "Who have to deal with this the rest of their lives."

Jeff Metcalf says surveillance footage of his son Austin's fatal stabbing tells a far different story than some of the claims that have circulated online since the deadly confrontation at a Texas track meet.

The grieving father, who viewed the footage prior to it being shown during Anthony's murder trial, told Fox News Digital he believes the video should be released publicly because it would put to rest lingering questions about what happened beneath a Memorial High School team tent on April 2, 2025.

"Yes, I've seen the video. I've seen the video a long time ago," Metcalf told Fox News Digital.

"The video clearly shows the conversation lasted less than 10 seconds. That's it," he said. "There was no four-on-one."

Metcalf said he would welcome the public release of the footage.

"To be honest, I'd love for it to be put out," he said. "So I could go, 'Look, if you weren't in the courtroom, or if you don't know, here's the video.'"

According to Metcalf, the footage directly contradicts claims that Anthony was jumped, surrounded or attacked by multiple students before the stabbing.

"He wasn't jumped. There was no four-on-one. He wasn't surrounded," Metcalf said. "Look at the video. There's a shove and there's a stab, and it's over and he runs away. That's it."

Metcalf's comments come as online debate over the case continues to intensify, fueling harassment and threats directed at his family. The backlash has unfolded alongside growing scrutiny of fundraising efforts tied to Anthony and his family.

A recently launched fundraising campaign was removed and refunded by the platform after raising hundreds of dollars. Questions have also persisted about previous fundraising efforts that generated more than $600,000 for Anthony's family following the fatal stabbing.

Metcalf, who spent much of the past 14 months under a gag order, said he watched as others publicly discussed the case while he remained largely unable to respond.

"People just continually making up lies and false narratives to fit their stories," he said. "All the race-baiting...they're monetizing it. It's for clicks. They're making money, and that's their objective."

Frustrated by what he sees as people profiting from discussions surrounding his son's death, Metcalf added: "You're gonna make money off my dead son?"

Without directly attacking Anthony's family, Metcalf suggested the public could draw its own conclusions.

"I don't have to speak on it," he said. "Their actions will speak loud enough."

"Everyone can see how they acted," he added.

Recalling a conversation after Hunter left the witness stand, Metcalf said he realized his son had grown into a man.

Fighting back tears, the father reflected on raising the boys together.

"I just can't believe I'm without one," he said.

More than a year after Austin's death, Metcalf said the pain remains greater than anything he has experienced before.

"Until this, I thought cancer was the hardest thing that ever happened," he said. "Cancer's like a speed bump. It's nothing."

Police in California spot body of 5-year-old swept out to sea

The body of a missing child who was swept into the ocean in California on Tuesday was found on Thursday, according to the City of Laguna Beach.

"During an early-morning aerial survey of the coastline on June 11, 2026, the Laguna Beach Police Department identified a possible match to the adolescent female who was swept into the ocean near Treasure Island Beach on June 9, 2026," a press release noted.

"The sighting occurred 250 to 300 yards offshore of Christmas Cove, which is located approximately one-quarter mile north of the area where the victim was initially swept into the ocean," the release explained. "Laguna Beach Marine Safety personnel responded to the location and recovered the decedent with assistance from the Orange County Sheriff's Department Harbor Patrol."

A GoFundMe campaign with a message attributed to the child's family states, in part, "It is with unimaginable heartbreak that we share the passing of our beloved Amada Mia Brown. Amada was only five years old, but she filled every room she entered with joy, laughter, and light. She was a happy, cheerful, and loving little girl whose smile could brighten anyone's day. She was deeply loved by her mother, family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know her."

"Our family's lives changed forever following a tragic accident on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Laguna Beach. After an extensive search, Amada was found and has now been reunited with her loved ones. While we are grateful to have answers, our hearts are shattered by this devastating loss," another portion of the message declared.

A Wednesday press release noted that "Based on preliminary information, a mother and her two children were swept into the ocean by powerful water [c]onditions while near the shoreline. Bystanders immediately entered the water and successfully rescued the mother and one child."

The child's mother "was doing anything any mother would do, take her children out to have a good time," the little girl's father, Aaron Brown, said in a KABC news report. "Unfortunately, the waves were a little bit too much."

The discovery of the body occurred after search efforts had wound down.

The U.S. Coast Guard noted in a Thursday press release that it had suspended its search on Wednesday evening.

A Wednesday City of Laguna Beach release noted that "As of sunset on June 10, 2026, Laguna Beach Marine Safety personnel and assisting agencies have concluded the dedicated search and recovery operation for the adolescent female who went missing in the ocean from Treasure Island Beach on the evening of June 9, 2026."

80% of claims in America's largest sexual abuse settlement in history could be fraudulent, LA DA says

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman asked a judge to freeze payments to the victims of a $4 billion sexual abuse lawsuit settlement, claiming four out of five of the claims could be fraudulent, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

In April 2025, Los Angeles County agreed to pay $4 billion to settle more than 11,000 claims of sexual abuse in county-run juvenile halls and foster homes, making it the largest sexual abuse settlement in U.S. history.

But an LA Times investigation discovered nine plaintiffs who said they were paid by recruiters to join the class-action lawsuit, four of whom, the paper reported, said their claims were entirely fraudulent.

Hochman launched his investigation shortly after the LA Times investigation went public.

"They looked at this opportunity to compensate these true victims of sex abuse as an opportunity to personally profit and engage in some of the most greedy and heinous conduct," Hochman said in a November 2025 news conference. "We are going to aggressively go after them," he said.

However, Hochman said then that the nine who came forward represented a small fraction of the "significant number of fraudsters involved in these settlement claims."

Now, Hochman is claiming 80% of claimants could be fraudulent while asking the judge overseeing the case to freeze the payments for six months while he continues his investigation, according to the LA Times.

Hochman's request would only apply to cases stemming from juvenile halls, the bulk of the cases in the lawsuit, according to the LA Times.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY FACES SCRUTINY AFTER ALLEGED WIDESPREAD HOSPICE FRAUD EXPOSED

Since the LA Times released the results of its investigation, LA County has imposed extra scrutiny on claimants, particularly those represented by Downtown LA Law Group (DTLA), a firm that represented all nine of the plaintiffs who reportedly claimed to have been recruited.

DTLA firmly denied recruiting anybody for the lawsuit.

"As we have consistently stated, DTLA never recruited anyone to join this lawsuit. In fact, we rejected over 70% of the cases that came to us. The allegations of fraud involving our firm are false," a DTLA spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

The company also believes it's being unfairly scrutinized compared to other companies representing plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

"DTLA was the only one subjected to an extensive independent third-party audit of more than 1,000 cases, with every client interviewed by a neutral auditor at our own expense. No other firm has undergone this level of scrutiny. We believe that fairness dictates that the regulatory agency make similar demands of other firms," the spokesperson said.

The increased scrutiny, Hochman argued in a Wednesday filing obtained by the LA Times, was necessary after lax vetting from prior agencies reviewing the cases.

"The prior and ongoing vetting by other agencies and entities has been insufficient to determine whether the claims are fraudulent," Hochman stated, per the LA Times.

Representatives of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit question Hochman's claims and say they further hurt victims who have suffered enough.

"They’re beyond frustrated," victim attorney Patrick McNicholas told the LA Times. "Once again, they’re getting victimized," he said.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs are expected to go in front of Superior Court Judge Lawrence Riff on Monday for a review of Hochman's request.

The DTLA spokesperson told Fox News Digital the company has cooperated with DA Hochman's investigation.

"We look forward to Judge Lawrence Riff’s ruling on this matter and, as we have always maintained, we remain fully committed to working cooperatively with District Attorney Nathan Hochman and his office to verify the authenticity of every claim," the spokesperson said.

"Our firm is fully committed to ensuring that clients who suffered real abuse are fairly compensated for the trauma they endured," the spokesperson also said.

Austin Metcalf's family hit with death threats as Karmelo Anthony supporters face violence allegations

Supporters of Karmelo Anthony are now allegedly turning to violence following his murder conviction, while family members of Austin Metcalf, the teen who Anthony stabbed and killed, have been receiving death threats following the verdict.

They were both 17 when Anthony fatally stabbed Metcalf at a high school track meet in April of last year.

Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years behind bars on Tuesday. He has since filed a notice of appeal to challenge the conviction.

Reports have circulated of Anthony supporters threatening violence. In one recent video posted on X, apparently by a user from Jacksonville, Florida, someone riding a bike appeared to assault a man. The video was taken from the rider's vantage point.

The alleged attacker questioned the victim, asking if he was on the Anthony trial jury selection.

In that video, a woman's voice can be heard stating the man who was allegedly punched is a veteran.

In a statement sent to Fox News Digital regarding the alleged incident, the Jacksonville Police Department said, "We are aware of this video circulating on social media and are actively looking into the video’s origin and parties involved."

While threats continue, it appears yet another fundraiser for Anthony was circulating online.

A GoFundMe that raised hundreds of dollars was created and then quickly shut down by the organization on Thursday.

In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, GoFundMe said:

"GoFundMe’s Terms of Service explicitly prohibit fundraisers that raise money for the legal defense of anyone formally charged with a violent crime. Consistent with this long-standing policy, any fundraising campaigns for the legal defense of someone charged with murder are removed from the platform and fully refunded. As such, the fundraiser has been removed from the platform and the $726 raised has been refunded."

Jurors in the case have yet to speak publicly about the verdict.

As for the Metcalf family, the threats keep coming.

According to TMZ, a family member received a text that said, "He [Austin] f---ed around and found out," insinuating the victim possibly provoked Anthony to fatally stab him.

Another one of the messages sent read, "Should've stabbed hunter too." Hunter is Austin's twin brother.

People are allegedly "threatening to show up to Metcalf family homes, taunting them by saying they're soiling Austin's grave," TMZ reported.

It was not immediately clear who sent the texts and to which family member specifically they were sent.

Jeff Metcalf told CBS after the trial that he is still receiving death threats and previously had his personal information released.

Last August, police responded to 911 calls with the SWAT team showing up to the Metcalfs' Frisco, Texas, home with guns drawn, the outlet reported.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Metcalf family and the Frisco Police Department for comment on the threats.

Portland man sentenced to 30 months in prison for throwing rock at ICE officer during protest

A man who admitted to assaulting a federal officer during protests outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Portland, Oregon, last year was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison on Thursday.

Robert Jacob Hoopes previously pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of a federal employee with a dangerous weapon.

According to court documents, Hoopes threw a rock during a June 2025 protest that struck an ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officer in the face, "causing significant injury."

Prosecutors said the officer's wound bled heavily and obstructed his vision. The officer also required medical treatment beyond basic first aid.

"Today’s message is clear — violence is not a protest," U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon Scott Bradford said in a statement. "When you cross the line and assault a federal officer, you will be prosecuted."

In addition to the prison sentence, Hoopes was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay more than $8,000 in restitution.

As previously reported by Fox News Digital, FBI investigators identified Hoopes using facial recognition technology.

According to charging documents, investigators submitted a photograph published by OregonLive.com to commercially available facial recognition software.

Federal authorities said the software generated approximately 30 potential matches from publicly available databases.

Investigators then reviewed the results and identified a photograph on a Reed College SmugMug page titled "Canyon Day April ’23." Prosecutors said a tattoo visible on the individual's forearm matched a tattoo seen on the suspect during the June 14 protest.

Hoopes' father, Tom Hoopes, previously described his son as a "lifelong Quaker who is deeply committed to pacifism" in an interview with KATU.

While he did not dispute that his son attended the protest, he declined to discuss his specific involvement.

"What his involvement was: I can’t speak to that, but he is deeply committed to justice," KATU quoted him as saying.

The Justice Department has pursued cases against numerous individuals accused of assaulting federal officers during protests tied to President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

More recently, clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement outside Delaney Hall, an immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, have resulted in dozens of arrests.

Pima County sheriff says Mexican authorities have not made contact over Nancy Guthrie search tip

The Pima County Sheriff's Department on Thursday said it has not been contacted by Mexican authorities amid news reports that an anonymous tip had prompted a search effort for Nancy Guthrie south of the border.

Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, head of Buscando Corazones Nogales in Sonora, Mexico, said the collective received a tip that a grave belonging to Guthrie, 84, may have been found.

The tipster said searchers could find a body matching Guthrie's description in the Mariposa area near Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, 12 News reported. Buscando Corazones Nogales works to locate people missing in Mexico.

The first flight under the arrangement could depart as early as Thursday and is expected to carry roughly 20 people.

According to a Reuters report, the flight includes people from Syria, Afghanistan and a Turkish national.

The administration has increasingly relied on these third-country deportation agreements as a lawful mechanism to remove migrants who cannot legally be sent back to their native countries.

Federal authorities previously struck a similar removal deal with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The CAR is bordered by Chad to the north, Sudan and South Sudan to the east, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo to the south, and Cameroon to the west.

Since gaining independence from France in 1960, the CAR has seen decades of political instability including six coups and weak state authority with armed insurgencies fuelimh violence and risk of mass atrocities against civilians.

President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, re-elected to a third term in December’s election, has relied on Russia for security assistance while also showing interest in partnering with Western countries to develop the country's critical minerals sector.

Under the new U.S. deal, hundreds of migrants could ultimately be sent to there which has triggered pushback from immigration defense lawyers.

US DEPORTS MORE IRANIANS, ISLAMIC REPUBLIC SAYS

Among those scheduled for the upcoming flight are two Iranian women who arrived in the U.S. in November 2024 and secured "withholding of removal" from a U.S. immigration judge.

According to their attorney, Emily Trostle, the two women face a risk of torture and persecution if forcibly returned to Iran. One of them is a baptized convert; the other is a democracy activist, Trostle said.

Both women were detained after arriving in the United States in November 2024, and filed asylum applications in the United States where they received protection in the form of a stay of deportation from an immigration judge, Trostle told the outlet.

The latest deal was reportedly finalized during a U.S. delegation visit to the capital city of Bangui in May, Reuters said.

Initial details regarding the total number of migrants, specific nationalities, and the long-term timing of subsequent flights were not made available at that time.

Once in the CAR, the deportees are expected to be housed in apartments in Bangui and will not face immediate repatriation.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), which received $85 million in U.S. funding this year, confirmed it will provide strictly voluntary, post-arrival humanitarian assistance to the migrants at the explicit request of the Central African government.

The agency noted it remains entirely uninvolved in the actual removals.

At least eight African nations, including Eswatini, the DRC, Ghana, and Sierra Leone, have taken in U.S. deportees, usually in exchange for financial or logistical support.

The State Department and Trostle did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A man at the center of a viral confrontation outside Karmelo Anthony's murder trial was arrested outside the courthouse where Anthony was found guilty of murder earlier this week, one of at least two arrests that were made as tensions flared during the racially-charged case.

Both individuals were taken into custody shortly after Anthony’s sentence was announced on Tuesday, the Collin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Fox News Digital.

The individual involved in the viral clash, identified as Jerome Winston Parker, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for alleged unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to the Collin County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the charge stems from an alleged incident that took place in the parking lot of the courthouse during "activities related to trial proceedings" three days earlier on June 6.

On Tuesday, he was seen in a face-to-face confrontation with an Austin Metcalf supporter, arguing in support of Anthony in a heated clash outside the courthouse.

In the other arrest, video recorded by FOX 4 shows a man wearing a pink tie and suspenders being arrested outside the courthouse in connection with an alleged assault, according to witnesses.

That man was later identified as Sholdon Daniels, a Republican nominee for Congress in Texas’ 30th Congressional District, who posted a video to X shortly before the alleged incident in which he was wearing the same outfit. According to Daniels’ campaign website, he is a veteran and attorney.

Daniels was subsequently taken into custody and charged with public intoxication, according to jail records obtained by Fox News Digital. He remains in jail on a $500 bond.

"I practice law in Collin County, Texas," Daniels said in one X post. "Karmelo Anthony will be convicted and sentenced to life in prison. As he should. He murdered that boy because he was raised to hate white people and to view himself as a victim in every situation. It’s a culture thing."

The arrests were made amid tense gatherings outside the courthouse as it was announced that a jury had found Anthony guilty of murdering Metcalf at a high school track meet in 2025.

Video taken by Fox News Digital showed several skirmishes breaking out as Anthony was handed a sentence of 35 years behind bars for Metcalf’s killing.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors revealed Anthony stabbed Metcalf to death after Metcalf asked him to leave a Memorial High School team tent.

Anthony’s defense insisted their client acted in self-defense.

However, a Texas jury convicted Anthony of murder.

Mississippi teen allegedly killed elderly couple in their home before firing on deputies in standoff

A Mississippi teenager allegedly broke into an elderly couple's home and killed them before sparking a standoff with police, investigators say.

Cordarius Hobbs, 17, allegedly broke into the Mendenhall, Mississippi, home of 74-year-old Billy Blair and his 71-year-old wife Virginia Carol Blair and killed them on June 3, WLBT reported.

Deputies with the Simpson County Sheriff's Office were called to the couple's home at around 12:24 p.m. on June 3 after family members couldn't reach the couple. Once at the house, according to officials, the deputies were met with gunfire.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bailey Martin said there was a burglary in progress when deputies arrived. She said deputies and civilians in the area were "pinned down by gunfire."

While Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said the 17-year-old suspect told law enforcement that he'd surrender at the front door, he instead ran out through the back of the house, causing a chase. He said one deputy was shot.

Hobbs was eventually arrested after being shot by a Mississippi state trooper and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He was charged with two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and two counts of aggravated assault over 65 years old.

In a statement on Facebook, the couple's family said, "We are crushed in spirit, bruised, and brokenhearted, but we are not alone."

Jason Busby, who was friends with the couple, remembered them as being extremely selfless when speaking with WLBT.

"The man would’ve given you the shirt off his back, his wife is the same, and they’re just great people. It’s just a tragedy," Busby said. "Everybody around here is still in shock. They were just good people."

Karmelo Anthony, the Texas man convicted of stabbing a star athlete to death at a high school track meet, is asking the court to appoint a free public defender for his appeal, despite his family raising more than a half million dollars in funds for his legal fees.

Anthony was found guilty and sentenced to 35 years in prison by a Collin County jury Tuesday for the 2025 murder of Austin Metcalf.

In the days following his conviction, Anthony filed a notice of appeal of the guilty verdict and requested a court-appointed public defender, claiming that he is a "penniless, destitute and indigent person" that is "too poor to employ counsel," according to court documents obtained by Fox News Digital.

The request from Anthony comes after a GiveSendGo fundraiser created to help pay for his legal fees and other expenses raised around $634,000 – nearly half of its $1.4 million goal.

The now-deleted fundraiser detailed how the funds would be used, and included that the money would go toward family expenses incurred by the case.

Additionally, funds must be sent directly to a licensed attorney involved in the defense, and cannot be distributed to the defendant or organizer.

The fundraiser was initially posted less than two weeks after Anthony fatally stabbed Metcalf in April 2025.

In a statement posted to X, GiveSendGo said "The fundraiser was created to support pre-trial needs, and those funds were dispersed over the past year for lawful purposes, including legal defense and family relocation with that stated purpose now complete the fundraiser has been closed. Our policy is that a fundraiser's stated purpose stays accurate so givers always know what they are supporting."

Boston police investigate armed robbery of children's lemonade stand by suspects as young as 11

Boston police are investigating the armed robbery of a children's lemonade stand operated by a pair of siblings.

The Boston Police Department responded at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday to South Boston, where they were met by the children and their father. The kids told officers that two suspects had made several passes by their lemonade stand before approaching and asking if they took Apple Pay, a police report provided to Fox News Digital states.

Before the young entrepreneurs could answer, one suspect grabbed a box containing $50 in cash. One of the suspects displayed a black firearm in his waistband before the pair ran off, police said.

The second suspect was described as a light-skinned male appearing to be 11 years old. He was also wearing a Nike sheisty.

Street cameras in the area were not facing the direction of the incident, police said.

In his social media message, Flynn said the incident could be traumatic for the children's family.

"As neighbors, we must all understand that an injustice done to one of us is an injustice done to all of us," he wrote. "While South Boston has certainly changed in my lifetime, one thing that remains is the spirit of its people. In neighborhood fashion emblematic of the South Boston I grew up in, friends and neighbors are rallying to show their support for the family."

Neighbors planned to help the kids reopen the lemonade stand on Friday, Flynn said.

The Pasadena Police Department in California released shocking video footage of a September 7, 2025 incident in which one officer apparently shot another officer by mistake.

Chief Gene Harris described the episode as "a suspected accidental officer-involved shooting," that "resulted from officers engaged in unsafe, and out-of-policy horseplay involving loaded firearms."

He noted that the injured officer had recovered.

In the video footage, an officer draws his weapon, points it toward a vehicle that approached him, then places the gun back in his holster. "As seen in the video, one officer drove toward the other officers who were standing next to another police vehicle. One of the standing officers, inappropriately, and in a quick draw fashion, drew his firearm from his holster and pointed it at the officer seated in the approaching unit. After a few seconds, he re-holstered the gun," the chief explained.

Vance Boelter changes plea to guilty in Minn. lawmaker shootings that killed Rep. Melissa Hortman, husband

The Minnesota man accused of killing a state lawmaker and her husband in a politically motivated assassination pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday.

Vance Boelter entered a guilty plea in Minneapolis for the fatal shootings of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman. He also shot Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, and attempted to shoot their daughter, Hope Hoffman, federal prosecutors said.

The plea deal calls for Boelter to serve two life sentences plus 40 years, in exchange for the government not seeking the death penalty, Fox Minneapolis reported.

MINNESOTA SHOOTING TIMELINE: SUSPECT VANCE BOELTER'S LAST WORDS TO FAMILY BEFORE CAPTURE

"Those that would commit political violence, those that would commit political violence at any level, should take heed that the Department of Justice will seek and obtain the longest prison terms available for your crimes," Daniel Rosen, the Daniel Rosen for the District of Minnesota, said at a news conference announcing the plea deal.

The plea agreement was approved by Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, according to a Wednesday court filing, noting that prosecutors agreed to take the death penalty off the table.

"The Attorney General has authorized and directed the government not to seek the death penalty against Defendant Vance Luther Boelter in accordance with the terms delineated in a proposed plea agreement, a copy of which has been submitted to the Court," the filing states.

"We made an agreement that said that we will not seek the death penalty, provided he agrees to serve the longest prison time possible under the law for every single one of of the counts," Rosen said. "I would say that the precedent that it sets is that if you want to commit political violence at any level, no matter what it is, that we are going to seek the the longest and strongest prison terms, for your offense."

Rosen said it was unclear what motivated Boelter to plead guilty.

Boelter shot Hortman and her husband in their Brooklyn Park home, and also shot Hoffman and his wife in their Champlin home on June 14, 2025.

Prosecutors said Boelter also visited the home of Rep. Kristin Bahner while she and her family were out of town, then later went to the New Hope home of state Sen. Ann Rest, but left after encountering a police officer who was conducting a welfare check.

MINNESOTA SHOOTING SUSPECT VANCE BOELTER TO FACE FEDERAL CHARGES IN LAWMAKER ATTACKS

Boelter allegedly impersonated a member of law enforcement on the day of the shootings and went to the homes of the Democratic elected officials with the intention of murdering them. Once he reached the Hoffman home, he knocked on the door repeatedly, claiming to be a police officer.

Shortly after the Hoffmans opened the door, they became alarmed when they saw Boelter wearing a face mask, prosecutors said. The Hoffmans tried to close the door before Boelter opened fire on the couple, authorities said.

Next, Boelter went to the Hortman home, where law enforcement, having heard of the first shooting, were conducting a welfare check. Officers at the scene spotted Boelter standing near the front door of the home before he fired several shots inside.

Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were struck and died from their wounds, prosecutors said. Boelter allegedly conducted extensive research prior to the attacks.

During a search of Boelter's vehicle, authorities recovered five firearms, including semi-automatic, assault-style rifles, a large quantity of ammunition, and several notebooks filled with handwritten notations. The notes listed the names of dozens of Minnesota state and federal elected officials, along with their home addresses.

A Hennepin County Attorney’s Office spokesperson told the Associated Press that the federal plea deal would not affect Boelter’s state charges.

New Hampshire Supreme Court overturns Adam Montgomery's murder conviction in daughter Harmony's death

New Hampshire's Supreme Court has overturned the murder conviction of Adam Montgomery, an ex-con drug addict who had been found guilty of brutally killing his 5-year-old daughter Harmony and hiding her remains, which have not been found.

"Trying the second degree assault and second degree murder charges in a single trial jeopardized the defendant's right to a fair trial," the court decided.

The court upheld his convictions on related charges, including abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and assault.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office confirmed to Fox News Digital on Thursday that it plans to try Montgomery for a second time on the murder charge.

"We are disappointed by the Court's decision to order a new trial on the second-degree murder charge and we plan to pursue a re-trial on that charge," said Michael Garrity, a spokesperson for Attorney General John Formella. "Adam Montgomery remains convicted of multiple serious felonies arising from Harmony's death, as well as separate firearms offenses that were previously upheld on appeal. Montgomery’s total sentence of 43.5 years for these additional charges stands and is not affected by the Court’s decision today."

According to the ruling, jurors were given strong evidence that Adam Montgomery beat Harmony months before her death, which improperly allowed them to draw the conclusion that he beat her again in December 2019, resulting in her death, in an incident where there was less evidence.

"The State's case on the second degree assault charge was strong," the court's opinion reads. "Three witnesses testified to observing the victim with a black eye in July 2019. Four witnesses, including two who observed the victim's black eye, testified that the defendant admitted striking the victim."

Only one witness linked him to the December assault believed to have resulted in Harmony's death, however. That was Kayla Montgomery, Adam's then-wife and Harmony's stepmother. She was granted a deal with prosecutors in exchange for her testimony, and the defense challenged her credibility.

"We are absolutely disgusted by the decision of the New Hampshire Supreme Court," said the adoptive parents of Harmony's brother, Jamison, Johnathon Miller and Blair Miller. "The reality is — more protection is in place for this monster than Harmony Montgomery ever received."

The murder case was remanded to a lower court, where prosecutors said they are confident they will prevail again.

"We remain confident in the facts of this case, the evidence presented, and the exceptional work of our prosecutors, investigators, and law enforcement partners," Garrity said. "We will continue our efforts to seek justice for Harmony Montgomery and all those who knew and loved her."

Police arrested Montgomery in January 2021 after Harmony's mother, who did not have custody and was no longer involved with Montgomery, reported her missing.

Investigators in Manchester, New Hampshire, discovered the girl had been unaccounted for since 2019.

On Dec. 7, 2019, the day investigators believe Harmony died, she had soiled herself in her sleep, prosecutors said.

Her father allegedly beat her over the head, telling his then-wife Kayla Montgomery, "I think I really hurt her this time."

Harmony was never seen again.

The defense painted Kayla Montgomery as an unreliable witness and attempted to blame her for the crime, arguing during trial that she was the last person to see Harmony.

The court found that trying the murder charge alongside the related counts was unfair to Adam Montgomery as a result — even though his defense had requested the initial joinder. After receiving more evidence, he later tried to have the cases severed, unsuccessfully.

"While the jury heard no evidence that Kayla had ever physically assaulted the victim, it heard evidence from multiple witnesses that the defendant physically assaulted the victim in July 2019," the ruling reads. "Thus, there was a significant risk that the jury would draw the impermissible inference that because the defendant assaulted the victim before by striking her in the head, he must be the one who fatally assaulted her in December by again striking her in the head."

Austin Metcalf's dad expresses empathy for Karmelo Anthony as killer's parents say 'they did a number on us'

Killer Karmelo Anthony's parents have been very vocal about what they claim was "injustice" following their son's murder conviction, while on the other side, the father of Austin Metcalf, whom Anthony stabbed and killed, has expressed forgiveness of his son's murderer.

After the verdict was presented to the court Tuesday, Metcalf's father, Jeff Metcalf, unleashed a fiery tirade at Anthony.

He also had a sorrowful reaction after the trial, CBS reported. In a sit-down interview with the outlet, he said, "I'll even say this: I had a little bit of sorrow because I'm human; and that poor boy is fixing to experience a life that I would not wish upon anyone."

Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years behind bars on Tuesday after he fatally stabbed Metcalf at a high school track meet during an altercation in April last year. He has since filed a notice of appeal to challenge the conviction.

In another interview with CBS, the Anthonys claim they don't believe their son got a fair trial.

Anthony's father, Andrew Anthony, said, "They did a number on us."

"We didn't get justice," he added. "A lot of things that were missed that should have been handled a certain way; however, we couldn't say anything. We did what we were instructed. We did what we were told."

Following the conviction and throughout the high-profile trial, the Anthonys and the Metcalfs have dealt with constant threats and harassment.

Last August, police responded to 911 calls with the SWAT team showing up to the Metcalfs' Frisco, Texas, home with guns drawn, CBS reported.

Jeff Metcalf told CBS after the trial that he is still receiving death threats and previously had his personal information released.

Despite the harassment to his family members, Metcalf supporters are still showing up.

The slain teen's most recent post to X, in March 2025, days before he was killed, has recently seen a surge in reposts to the platform. "Faith that god got me <3 and my work will pay off," he wrote.

While support pours out for Austin, a new fan page for Anthony, "standwithkarmeloanthony," appears to have been created on Instagram; it has already gained several hundred followers.

An Instagram user with the username v.pperez, which appears to be owned by Anthony's girlfriend Valeria Perez, has been reportedly promoting the new fan page.

Philadelphia police have released video of the two suspects sought in the investigation into the murder of a Pennsylvania State University student who was coming home from an NBA Finals watch party.

The Philadelphia Police Department released the video after Billy Schmidt, 22, was killed during an armed robbery attempt that happened Saturday at about 1:30 a.m. Officers found the college student with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to a local hospital but pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m.

Police Wednesday night released video of two suspects in the killing and armed robbery of Schmidt, saying the two threw away their sweatshirts and masks in the area of 22nd and Porter streets.

The shooter was described by police as a Black male between 5’3″ and 5’5″ "wearing all dark (black) clothing with a light gray camouflage-colored facemask." Officials said this person was armed with a handgun.

The second suspect was described by police as 5’8″ with braids and was "wearing a light gray colored custom designed "KONFUSED" brand hooded sweatshirt with a design on the front that includes three skulls and crossbones with a bejeweled halo above each skull."

Investigators said Schmidt was on his way home after he watched the NBA Finals with his friends when he was robbed at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Earlier released surveillance video appears to show Schmidt saying, "Give me my phone" as he chased the suspects. A phone could be seen thrown on the ground, then seconds later a gunshot could be heard.

Schmidt was a student at Penn State World Campus studying journalism, and was set to graduate in December.

His father, Bill Schmidt, told Fox News in an interview he found his son's phone at the crime scene.

"I found the phone on 19th. I called police after. I didn't realize I touched it," he said. "They're trying to get DNA, and they have a print on the phone, but they don't know if it's mine, Billy's, or the person who threw it. But they're trying get DNA off the phone."

Anna Schmidt, Billy Schmidt’s sister, said "I hope they find these animals and put them in cages for the rest of their lives."

"They deserve to spend the rest of their life in jail for taking away my brother. And I don't think no one will ever understand this pain that they have caused. They are animals for doing that to him. He was unarmed. And all this for a phone? It just doesn't even make sense," she said.

The Philadelphia Police Department is asking anyone with information about the suspects to contact 215-686-3334/3335 and is offering a reward of $20,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Convicted killer Karmelo Anthony's family used fundraiser money for moving and living expenses

Karmelo Anthony will serve his sentence while it appears the fundraising campaign for his family organized by his mother, Kala Hayes, has been taken down.

Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years behind bars Tuesday. He has since filed a notice of appeal to challenge the conviction.

He said in his appeal that he cannot afford a new lawyer, WFAA reported. Those documents say Anthony is a "penniless, destitute, and indigent person, too poor to employ counsel to represent me on the appeal," according to the outlet.

The fundraiser was posted on GiveSendGo, an international crowdfunding platform, April 15, 2025, which was less than two weeks after Anthony fatally stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.

All the while, the fundraiser for Anthony and his family, titled "Help Karmelo Official Fund," initially had a goal of generating nearly $1.4 million and raised just shy of $634,000.

The funds raised will also support a range of urgent and necessary means that have emerged as a result of the situation, including — but not limited to — the safe relocation of the Anthony family due to escalating threats to their safety and well-being, as well as basic living costs, transportation, counseling, and other security measures."

It was not immediately clear where the Anthony family moved to from its Frisco, Texas, home.

However, a man who identifies himself as Anthony's father on Facebook, Drew Anthony, has publicly posted in his profile that he lives in New Orleans.

In a post on X, GiveSendGo wrote in part:

"The fundraiser was created to support pre-trial needs, and those funds were dispersed over the past year for lawful purposes, including legal defense and family relocation with that stated purpose now complete the fundraiser has been closed. Our policy is that a fundraiser stated purpose stays accurate so givers always know what they are supporting."

While one fundraiser was scrubbed, another has reportedly reappeared in support of the Anthony family. A new fundraising campaign was started by Dominique Alexander. Anthony's family has had Dallas-based civil rights activist Minister Dominque Alexander as a spokesperson throughout the case.

Toledo police name suspect Ka Nye Taylor in festival shooting that injured 12, hunt second gunman

Authorities on Wednesday identified a suspect in the shooting that injured 12 people near Toledo's Old West End Festival and said they are searching for a suspected second gunman.

The Toledo Police Department said a manhunt is underway for Ka Nye Taylor, who is wanted on 11 counts of felonious assault in the June 6 shooting near the popular Old West End Festival, an annual event featuring live music, food vendors and home tours.

Police described Taylor as a Black male standing about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing about 130 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Investigators also released a photo of a second suspected gunman who has not been publicly identified.

GUNMAN REMAINS AT LARGE AFTER SHOOTING FIVE PEOPLE AT CONNECTICUT MALL

Authorities responded around 5:37 p.m. Saturday to reports of a shooting near Delaware Avenue and Glenwood Avenue near the festival grounds.

When officers arrived, they found multiple victims with gunshot wounds, police said.

Authorities later confirmed that all 12 victims were in stable condition. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 61, with most in their early 20s.

MANHUNT UNDERWAY FOR SUSPECT ACCUSED OF KILLING TWO PEOPLE OUTSIDE CHIPOTLE RESTAURANT

Investigators are asking anyone with information about Taylor's whereabouts or the identity of the second suspected shooter to contact Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.

Authorities are offering a combined reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to arrests. Crime Stoppers is offering $10,000, while the U.S. Marshals Service has offered an additional reward of up to $5,000.

Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joseph Heffernan said investigators believe at least two gunmen were involved.

"They were probably shooting at each other," Heffernan said during a news conference.

Police said the gunfire erupted after a foot chase and assault involving two rival groups at the festival, according to WTOL 11.

Authorities said the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the groups.

Earlier this week, Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates vowed that "justice will be swift and strong."

"Those who were frightened, traumatized or harmed by this violence will remain at the forefront of our efforts," Bates said in a statement. "I’ve felt outrage before, but this is personal. This is my home. These are my friends and neighbors. It is not OK."

Ohio approves nearly billion-dollar payment after court ruled state shortchanged nursing homes

Ohio lawmakers approved an $875 million payment package Wednesday after the Ohio Supreme Court found the state used the wrong formula to calculate certain Medicaid reimbursements for nursing homes, shortchanging providers by hundreds of millions of dollars.

The funding, included in a budget correction bill that now heads to Republican Gov. Mike DeWine's desk, is intended to resolve a dispute over payments to skilled nursing centers that dates back to the 2024-25 budget cycle.

"This is the most egregious thing we could have done to individuals that help our elderly live a quality, comfortable life," state Rep. Jean Schmidt said. "And today we are correcting that wrong."

In a September 2025 ruling, the Ohio Supreme Court said state officials used the wrong methodology when calculating certain Medicaid quality payments, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in underpayments to nursing homes. The court ordered the state to recalculate what providers were owed.

Lawmakers' solution carries a larger price tag than the amount identified in the ruling. The package sets aside $875 million, including roughly $310 million from the state and $565 million in federal funding, to settle the issue.

Ohio pays nursing homes a daily rate for Medicaid residents and provides additional payments to facilities that meet certain quality benchmarks. Nursing home operators argued the state failed to properly account for the medical complexity of residents when calculating those payments, reducing reimbursement for facilities caring for some of the sickest patients.

Lawmakers later revised the formula, but the state remained responsible for payments tied to earlier budget cycles.

FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKS BIDEN NURSING HOME STAFFING MANDATE

The financial stakes grew as the case moved through the courts. In legal filings, Ohio Medicaid warned that recalculating the payments under the court's interpretation could cost about $285 million more per year than lawmakers originally intended, potentially approaching $1 billion over two budget cycles.

The legislation requires providers that accept the money to waive future legal claims related to the disputed formula.

Scott D. Wiley, CEO of the Ohio Health Care Association, urged DeWine to sign the bill.

"These funds are critically important to Ohio’s providers and the families they serve, and we urge Governor Mike DeWine to sign HB 479 into law without delay," Wiley said.

Minnesota man marks FBI's first arrest from DOJ's 'Most Wanted Fraudsters' list

FBI Director Kash Patel announced Wednesday that Said Abdullahi Ereg, a former Minneapolis grocery and deli owner, had surrendered to federal authorities, marking the first person on the FBI’s new Most Wanted Fraudsters list to be taken into custody as federal authorities continue a nationwide fraud crackdown.

Said Abdullahi Ereg, 47, faces charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

The FBI said Ereg, a former south Minneapolis grocery and deli owner, surrendered to federal authorities less than a week after the Justice Department unveiled its "Most Wanted Fraudsters" list, which is intended to publicly identify individuals charged in major fraud cases.

"Today’s arrest is historic – the first ever arrest of a subject on our Most Wanted Fraudsters List released last week with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud," Patel said in a statement.

A TIMELINE OF THE ‘LARGEST COVID-19 FRAUD SCHEME' IN THE UNITED STATES

Authorities said Ereg has been wanted on federal charges since 2024 and is fraudulently obtaining more than $4.2 million from the Federal Child Nutrition Program during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to federal officials, Ereg operated Evergreen Grocery and Deli, a Minneapolis grocery store and deli, under the sponsorship of the nonprofit Feeding Our Future.

Prosecutors allege he falsely claimed to have served meals to children in need, fraudulently obtained government reimbursements and laundered the proceeds through foreign accounts while using some of the money to finance a lavish lifestyle.

Court documents allege Evergreen Grocery and Deli claimed to have served more than 3,000 meals twice daily, seven days a week.

"Led by Vice President Vance and the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, we set up the historic, first ever 'Most Wanted Fraudsters' list for this exact purpose — to bring to justice the alleged worst of the worst who took advantage of American taxpayers and stole public funds," Patel said.

He added that the list serves as a warning that "the days of Washington, D.C., turning a blind eye to fraud are over."

In a post on X, Patel suggested the arrest was only the beginning of a broader enforcement effort.

Federal officials said Ereg contacted authorities through his attorney and expressed a willingness to return to the United States one day after the FBI launched the Most Wanted Fraudsters list.

The Justice Department also noted that Ereg's wife, Najmo Ahmed, who worked at the business and received payroll payments directly from Feeding Our Future, pleaded guilty last year to money laundering charges and is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.

The arrest comes months after the Justice Department announced the creation of a National Fraud Enforcement Division to support President Donald Trump's Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, which is led by Vice President J.D. Vance.

Undefeated lacrosse team's championship dreams end in controversy after players punished over fake cigars

An undefeated Massachusetts high school lacrosse team's championship hopes came to an abrupt end this week after school officials ruled nine players ineligible, forcing Ipswich High School to forfeit its state semifinal matchup.

The decision has sparked controversy because the players insist they never violated the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association's tobacco policy, claiming the cigars they used during a graduation celebration contained no tobacco.

Ipswich forfeited its MIAA Division 4 semifinal against Cohasset High School on Tuesday after the team was unable to field enough eligible players.

According to reporting by Boston.com, senior Christian Gianakakis and several teammates participated in a graduation tradition Sunday by smoking homemade cigars that he said were tobacco-free. Gianakakis said his father rolled the cigars after fake cigars ordered online failed to arrive before graduation.

HIGH SCHOOL LACROSSE PLAYER, 16, DIES OF INJURIES SUSTAINED DURING GAME

The controversy escalated after a photo of the students was reported to school officials, who believed the cigars were real, according to the report.

Gianakakis told Boston.com that he and several teammates later recovered one of the cigars and presented it to school administrators as evidence that it did not contain tobacco. He also told the outlet that Principal Jonathan Mitchell initially informed him and his father that the players would be allowed to participate in Tuesday's semifinal before the decision was reversed roughly four hours before game time.

"It felt like a punch in the face. It was like we were being called liars," Gianakakis told Boston.com.

Ipswich High School said in a statement that the team and coaching staff decided to forfeit because of a shortage of available players.

"Ipswich High School was very excited to have its boys lacrosse team advance to the Division 4 State Semifinals that was scheduled for Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.," the school said in a statement on its website. "The team and coaching staff decided that due to the shortage of available players that it was in the best interest of the team to forfeit the game. We congratulate all of our players and coaches on a great season and for advancing to the Final Four."

MIAA Executive Director Bob Baldwin told WEEI the organization was aware of the situation but did not participate in determining whether the students could play.

"We did not rule in that. We were just made aware of it," Baldwin said. "It's a local decision; we did not get involved at all in that decision."

Baldwin pointed to MIAA rules governing alcohol, tobacco and controlled substances, noting that such investigations are typically handled at the local level.

The MIAA handbook states that when a principal determines a student-athlete has violated rules governing alcohol, tobacco or controlled substances, the student loses eligibility for the next consecutive contests totaling 25% of that sport's season.

The circumstances surrounding the eligibility decision remain unclear. According to Boston.com's reporting, Gianakakis believes the final determination was made by Superintendent Brian Blake.
