Ummm….Picture to achcha hai jee. Disregarding the rather strenuously upbeat ending "Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji" (DTBHJ) turns out to be quite a charming and clever concoction. Though this time Madhur Bhandarkar, one of the strongest celluloid creators of contemporary times, veers into virgin territory, the trademark Bhandarkar touches, like the almost-incestuous use of sex as a bartering point between the sexes, are evident everywhere in this multi-plot story of love, sex and betrayal during times of laughter music and backchat in Mumbai.

The writing (by Bhandarkar, Anil Pandey and Neeraj Udwani) weaves skillfully through the hearts and conscience of our three heroes who are designed to be a study in contrasts and yet so believable, you can touch their lives by just watching them stumble, fall and redeem themselves in tentative, sometimes funny, sometimes moving ways.

This, then, is the story of three house-mates wading through the concrete jungle of Mumbai in search of love, sex and, yes, a sense of belonging. Their houses, hearts and environment look believable. They are shot to resonate reality.

Though projected outwardly as a comedy, DTBHJ has deeper, darker resonances that we cannot miss even if we are too busy laughing at the protagonists' clumsy attempts to get lucky in love.

Bhandarkar's narration communicates that sense of empty enjoyment that you can feel under all the glitz and noise of Mumbai's racing pulse. Omi Vaidya, who plays the most idealistic love-seeker of the triumvirate, says to the go-getting struggler from Mumbai(Shraddha Das) at a pub, "How can people talk in here?" She of course doesn't hear him. She's lost in the pursuit of her wanna-shine dreams that take her further and further out of reach of true love.

Vaidya is in splendid form here, far more in control of his character's destiny than in "3 Idiots". In the way he hybridizes his yankee accent with Marathi and a sense of earnestness with a subtle tone of mischief, Vaidya is absolutely endearing. So is Emran Hashmi. Playing the character with the steepest graph, Hashmi goes from Tisca Arora's toyboy to the new-age Devdas rejected in love by the savvy NRI chick who has social conscience and a practical attitude to men.

When Shruti Haasan (looking so lovely you know she's found her metier in Hindi films) turns around and tells the philanderer, "Yeah, so we slept together. So what? It wasn't your first time nor mine," you know that Bhandarkar has not abandoned his scathing and savage exploration of urban values which made his heroine-centric dramas from "Chandni Bar" to "Fashion" so unforgettable. He's only added laughter to his cinema.

In DTBHJ, Bhandarkar walks a tightrope. He has to balance the laughter with the dark underbelly of Mumbai's beautiful, but alas, desolate people. Besides the powerful writing (Sanjay Chel's dialogues are tongue-in-cheek and sometimes killing in their effectual demolition of the sacred cows of urban conduct) and razor-sharp characterization (barring the caricatural people in Devgn's office), the film gets high marks for dead-on casting.

Every actor breathes life into the constantly mutating comedy. If we care for all the three love stories that run in criss (never crass) cross it is because the actors enacting the love relationships go beyond their own personalities in search of the people they play. While Omi Vaidya and Emran Hashmi make a great impact, it is Ajay Devgn, echoing Amol Palekar's Common Man from the 1970s, who must be congratulated in the loudest voice for abandoning his 6-pack mean-mirth-machine image to play a mousy middle-aged divorcee with the hots for his comely secretary.

Among the female cast, Shazahn Padamsee is extremely easy on the eyes and fits her bubbly ingenue's part like a chic glove. Tisca Arora as the bored socialite who strays into a lust liaison with an ever-ready glorified gigolo, lends a certain weight to the proceedings with her fiery eyes.

DTBHJ is a true-blue sex comedy that doesn't lapse into unnecessary passages of vulgarity and innuendos. Though Bhandarkar has sought inspiration from the romantic comedies by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee, the style of storytelling and the tantalizing merger of libido and urban morality would have flummoxed those wondrous comedy makers.

Times have changed. So have the films. Thankfully we still have filmmakers who believe the story is the hero. This is the world of Bhandarkar's "Page 3" coming together with the laughter of Blake Edwards' rom-coms.

A must-see film with enough meat in the plot to keep us engaged till the end. And three heroes who never take off their shirts even when they are sweating in nervous anxiety.

Love is like that only.

Director Samir Karnik has long been associated with the Deols, and his last outing, HEROES, which was received with much critical acclaim and was partly successful too, saw some memorable songs by Sajid- Wajid and Monty Sharma. This time however the canvas gets bigger and things even more exciting as the three hunks, the original he man, ageless Dharmendra, macho man Sunny and handsome Bobby come together to bomb blast the screen with their aptly titled YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA. Last time when the trio came together in the hit family cum action drama, APNE, the music by Himesh Reshammiya became quite popular. This time however, YPD promises to be a rollicking roller coaster fun ride and the music album of the film promises some fun filled invigorating 'dhol, taashe' laced Punjabi flavoured songs, more 'desi' rather than metro centric. And we are sure, especially after the scintillating musical success of BAND BAAJA BAARAAT audio, Punjabi is the flavour of the season. Not entrusting one composer, the makers have gone in for as many as five music directors. We will know the reason after listening to the album but we are quite sure that the amalgamation of the new and veteran composers will give us music lovers a wide variety of songs to listen to and savour. So let's get the ball rolling and see what they have in store for us!

The starting is on the expected line with the iconic Mohd Rafi, Laxmikant-Pyarelal number, 'Main Jat Yamla Pagla Diwana' originally by Laxmikanth-Pyarelal with lyrics by Anand Bakshi (titled 'YPD Title Track (RDB) Version 1') with which Dharm pa ji has come to be associated with ever since the superlative success of the film, PRATIGYA, and it's song which still remains evergreen in the minds and hearts of music buffs. Naturally the song has been rearranged (by RDB) and resung by Mohd Rafi's new avatar, the highly talented Sonu Nigam, who does full justice to the composition and giving him able company is Nindy Kaur. Not much 'chhed chhad' has been (thankfully!) done and the old world charm of the composition has been retained thanks to RDB, who do their bit to refurbish the track with additional lyrics and lively background music arrangements. Nostalgia revisited indeed!

'Charha De Rang', the first original track of the album has been composed by Nouman Javaid and this number features as many as four times (Original plus 'Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Version 2', 'Pervez Adlib Version' & 'Rahat Adlib Version') in the album. There are different versions of the same song but there are no remixes. Although there is a slower version (sans any musical backing up) which is quite brief as well. Quite a few singers have been shortlisted for the song and prominent amongst them are Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahul B. Seth, Shweta Pandit, Mahalaxmi Aiyer and Ali Pervez Mehdi, all of whom do a splendid job. This song too has an old world charm about it considering the immensely sweet melody that encapsulates the song. The use of Hindustani music instruments like flute, 'daf', 'sarangi' etc lend a surreal classic touch to the song. Though quite heavily loaded with Punjabi lyrics (by Nouman Javaid and Rahul B Seth) the song should find its patrons because it is a highly classy number and the use of 'heer' (in portions) which is a sad Punjabi love note by male singers (especially Rahat!) is simply superb. The female singers pump up the proceedings with vigorous singing naturally Punjabi ishtyle!

Veteran composer (cum lyricist here) Anu Malik, who has composed quite a few chartbusters especially for Bobby and Sunny, gets another chance with 'Tinku Jiya' which if classified is an item/dance number where Anu fuses the new with the old. Its like 'Munni Badnaam Huyi' meeting 'Sarkailo Khatiya' (RAJA BABU), more precisely the song is folk inspired and the number that comes to mind is 'Phulori Bina Chatni Kaise Bani'. However the song will definitely appeal to the front benchers who are the real target audience here. The trump card is Mamta Sharma, the superstarni of Bhojpuri item numbers and after 'Munni' quite a name in Bollywood too. We are sure that her presence here along with the sweet sounding vocals of Javed Ali will definitely help the song achieve a hit status. But one wished that Anu had come up with something more original and catchy especially since the tune that he uses has been done to death

Another veteran composer, Sandesh Shandilya, gets to showcase his class with the next number, 'Sau Baar', a love ditty that might come as a surprise to many. However people tend to forget that all the three Deols may be full-fledged 'masala' action heroes but they have quite a few memorable love songs to their credit, especially Dharmendra and Sunny. Coming to the love ballad, it's a gem that will be loved by die hard romantics. The melody is superb, the catchline, 'Sau baar ye kahe dil ke aaja tujhe pyar karein' is worth repeating all over. Irshad Kamil's lyrics are simple and effective and succeed in invoking the eternal feeling of love. Promising singer Omar Nadeem is good but in parts he sounds (or tries to) like Atif Aslam, but who cares as long as the track sounds good! Giving him apt company is melody queen Shreya Ghoshal, who is superb as always.

The makers putting a lot of faith in Anu give him a second chance (both as composer and lyricist) and once again it's an all out dance number cum 'qawwali', 'Chamki Jawaani' sung by Mamta Sharma, Daler Mehdi and Master Salim. However despite the presence of these highly talented singers the song fails to impress and it's the composition that fails, not the singers who do a fabulous job. The problem lies with the composer who simply mixes and matches several tunes (few that come to mind are, 'Husn Waalon Se Allah Bachaye'-Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, 'Sharma Ke Agar Kyun Pardanasheen)'(CHAUDHVI KA CHAAND), 'Chalat Musafir Moh Liya Re'(TEESRI KASAM) to come up with a medley of sorts that unfortunately does not deliver at all. Even Dharmendra's superhit love song, 'Chalkaye Jaam' finds a place but to no avail. Anu has tried all the tricks in the book to conjure up a 'dhamaal' dance number, the intension is loud and clear but it fails to entertain overall and might just click with the audience of interiors , especially the Bhojpuri belt of UP - Bihar.

As if two dance numbers were not enough, there is a third one which is 'Son Titarya' but this time, it's by Rahul B Seth and Nouman Javaid who are credited as both composers and lyricists. Once again targeting the interiors, this song is folk based and sung by Krishna Beura who has in the past shown that he is a name to reckon with in this genre. To the credit of the composer duo, this number is catchy, the lyrics more decent and cute, this time they are in 'Awadhi' rather than Bhojpuri . 'Hamri saari herogiri to bas dhari rah gayi, Uske roop ke sagar mein to tel laga ke bah gayi.' The 'nautanki' feel of the composition is kept alive by rampant use of harmonium, 'dholak' and lots of 'seetees' (whistles) in the background. The song will definitely look good on screen if picturized well.

All those who were missing an all out 'Bhangra' dance based number, the makers have certainly saved it for the penultimate song as we have, 'Kadd Ke Botal' composed by Rahul B Seth which can also be called the title track and is a fun celebratory number. Written by Dharmendra who had also rendered it in one of the award shows, the tune of the song is based on a very popular Punjabi folk on which quite a few Hindi film songs too have been based. In fact Sunny Deol's DILLAGI too had a similar type number, although this song is more 'desi' flavoured with lots of Indian musical instruments. Sukhwinder Singh, who has been a favourite with the Deols, puts in a much required appearance and he certainly helps the cause with some highly energetic rendition which is required in these type of songs. He is well supported by Harshdeep and Rosalie Nicholson who provide the song with the much needed oomph.

Winding off the album on holy note there is a brief 'Gurbani' rendered excellently by Shahid Mallya. In the past we have had a few Gurbanis and the last that we can remember is 'Shabad Gurbani' from Ajay Devgn's HALLA BOL The devotional track is composed by Sanjoy Chowdhury and as it is a 'gurbani' it's naturally picked up from the holy book , Shri Guru Granth Sahib. A song to calm the mind and cleanse the soul. A lovely and serene end to the album.

The music album certainly is a mix bag with some very hummable and enjoyable tracks like the title tack, 'YPD Title Track (RDB) Version 1' (so what if it's rearranged), 'Charha De Rang' and 'Sau Baar'. Anu Malik's 'Tinku Jiya' has the capacity to pull off a surprise and 'Son Titarya' has its own cute charm. Worth a buy just for nostalgic reasons, if nothing else.

Meet an urban and upwardly mobile family that has never had a houseguest before. Puneet (Ajay Devgan) is a mediocre film writer who is writing a script about a blind woman who can see and a mute man who can speak. His interior designer wife Munmun (Konkana Sen Sharma) struggles with her spoken Hindi, but rants in Bengali when she is angry. Their young son too gets pulled up at school for being a weak Hindi student.
Based on a short story by the late satirist, Sharad Joshi, the film opens with laborious explanations on the meaning of ‘Athithi Daivo Bhawa’ (Sanskrit for ‘The Guest is akin to God).

The heavily pre-empted guest arrives at Puneet and Munmun’s doorstep in the form of a never-seen-before relative from Gorakhpur. The harmless looking Chachaji (Paresh Rawal), armed with a dhoti and gamcha invades, rather unpleasantly, the family’s intimate nuclear set-up. Chachaji slaps the watchman, gargles like a garbled gargoyle at 5 in the morning, and brace your self, farts noisy stinkers all over the house.
Much to the chagrin of Puneet & Munmun, Chachaji begins to make their home his own and even orders extensive food preparations from the independent Munmun.

The frustrated couple soon realizes that chachaji has no return date in mind and they try different methods to get rid of him. But it all seems to be in vain as chachaji is made of sterner stuff.

Is the humor your cup of tea? Decide for yourself.

In one scene, the couple get an actor friend to fake a call from chachaji’s village informing chachaji that his wife has died (yes, the writers must have forgone the basics of humanity for the sake of comedy) Predictably, it is revealed that chachiji had passed away 5 years ago and chachaji gets the actor-friend thrashed by the cops. The irate couple goes to the extent of hiring an underworld don to threaten chachaji into leaving, but to their dismay, the thug begins to worship the chacha who has his traditional values intact. .

In spite of a dodgy screenplay and scenes that go on and on, the clever casting does somewhat manage to hold it together. Paresh Rawal plays the part of the unwanted guest excellently, and refrains from making him loud and menacing. Ajay Devgan manages to stay his subdued self for most of the film and shares neat chemistry with Konkana Sharma. Konkana gets her comedy quite right. Together, the couple put in a natural performance.

A really funny moment has chachaji in a temple, singing a bhajan for Durga Maa to the tune of, brace yourself again, ‘Beedi Jalaile’ the Bipasha Basu hit song. Also funny are the scenes where Munmun follows chachaji around the house with a can of air freshener to combat his deadly flatulence.

Undoubtedly, anyone who has had a difficult houseguest will relate to plight of the family. Not only is their privacy interminably invaded, but they also have to exasperationgly tune their western minds towards the rural values of the ‘desi’ uncle. This aspect of the story is particularly interesting, exposing a whole generation of city bred children, like Puneet and Munmun’s son, who know very little about the significance of Indian culture and its values.

The film has a soulful message, the comic timing comes out right and the acting is well controlled. Unfortunately, the rest of the filmmaking is not in control. The script is strangely schizophrenic, ranging from great one-liners to illogical babble. The is editing is indulgent and the gags stay on screen stay well beyond their punch lines.

‘Athithi Tum Kab Jaoge’ builds up moments nicely, but like all flatulence, it throws up far more than it can digest. Watch; but with a can of air freshener next to your popcorn.

332 Mumbai To India

The Hindi film industry has suddenly turned to realistic cinema to depict the gory details of some of the most horrific events that have taken place in various parts of India. Thus after a film on 26/11,we now have a film based on the incidents that were based on the differences between the North Indians and the Mumbaikars that took place in Mumbai some time earlier this year.

The film 332 Mumbai to India deals with such real life incidents that took place while this sentiment of differences between the North Indians and the Mumbaikars taking place was in full swing.

Thus the film has Rahul Raj a young guy who hi jacks a bus with the no.332. The bus was scheduled to travel from Andheri to Kurla and was full of passengers from various walks of life, as is always the case with any bus.

However the story revolves around the lives of the people who are stuck in the bus. There is an auto rickshaw driver, a couple, a few students and a writer.

The movie does have some very gory details and meaningful dialogues, but some of the bold and original ones have been beeped which spoils the total impact of the movie. The world of realism is yet alive with the characters playing their parts quite convincingly but there is still room for more.

The overall effect of the movie comes across as quite a narrative with the plots getting quite muddled up. The problems faced by the North Indians and the sentiments that were hurt does come across with some impact on the audiences mind. So if you’re in the mood for some reality dose then this one is for you.

Anisha, an attractive young lady in her thirties, is astounded to find that someone is sending her a series of diamonds by courier. Her father, Captain Mehta, had disappeared some years back and the letter accompanying the diamonds hints at some link between her father and the diamonds…

The diamonds lead the intrepid Anisha, a night club singer by profession, to the idiosyncratic private detective, Prashant Saigal and his associate, Dr. Arvind Rao: a criminological expert with an eye for the beautiful things in life!

The trio of Prashant, Arvind and Anisha reach the house of the man who was sending the diamonds, namely, the ultra stylish Goutam Dutt. He tells them the intriguing tale of the Agra treasure, a collection of highly priced jewels that had its origin some 150 years back and which disappeared nearly 40 years back…

The search for the treasure and for the truth behind Captain Mehta's death leads the trio to Shillong, to the house built by Colonel Dutt, the father of Goutam Dutt. The colonel had died in a strange paroxysm of fear upon seeing a ferocious face at the window…

Saigal and Arvind stumble upon a series of murders including that of Siddharth Dutt, Goutam Dutt's brother, mercilessly annihilated by a poisonous dart – the last in a series of killings that began with the butchering of the merchant Achmet, at Agra, some forty years ago… It was Achmet who had been entrusted with the Agra treasure by the Maharaja of Sitamgarh.

Prashant, who has a great liking for single malt whiskeys, gradually unravels the mystery, aided by his own hallucinations and dreams. His research, coupled by his own subconscious, leads him to the mysterious and malevolent Jalaluddin who is the prime suspect in the Siddharth murder case. In the course of the adventure, Anisha's traumas and uncertainties throw her close to the disarming Arvind, who often has to face the ire of the short tempered Prashant.

Meandering along a path full of strange sulphurous fires and labyrinthine corridors, Prashant and Arvind engage in a cat and mouse game with the one legged Jalal. This culminates in an incredibly complex chase on the Badapani River, a massive water body surrounded by mountains. The final confrontation between Prashant and Jalaluddin takes place on the high seas with the mythical treasure ever remaining cloaked in historical mystery, even as a shaken Anisha tries to assimilate the nuances of this dream like sojourn…

This Vikramaditya Motwane directed flick, UDAAN, a journey of a young boy for his dreams, is the only official Indian entry at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival and so expectations for something experimental is predicable. Backed by writer turned director Anurag Kashyap, it brings on gifted Amit Trivedi as the leading music composer with poetically affluent Amitabh Bhattacharya as the reliable lyricist for this thought-provoking subject. UDAAN (meaning "flight") gives him another forum to deliver out his credentials that should be matching the needful requirements of the flick. Despite low on commercial contents and bankable face value, the music deserves extra efforts to make itself audible in the marquee. Let's take flight in its musical territories and discover facts...

Motivationally awakening! Upbeat soft-rock rhythms get into sublime mode to emote out the inspirational hues of protagonist in delightfully composed "Kahaani-Aankhon Ke Pardon Pe". Joi Barua and Neumena Pinto sings in tandem to sensitize out a typical rock-band feel in brief but invigorating Amitabh Bhattaharya's wordings that talk about new horizons of life. Amit Trivedi makes confident start with this guitar strummed inspired background score that is likely to be adding substance in the narrative flows. Both vocalists make maximum impact in their huskier baritones that are later amalgam with rock-musical antics to evoke out the thematically profound appeal.

The title UDAAN gets a perfect song for its theme with poetic verses getting optimum trapping of soft-rock connotations in meticulously composed "Geet Mein Dhalte Lafzon Mein". After making impressive start to the album, Amit Trivedi aesthetics gets better and materializes out a perfect "10" theme track for this path-breaking flick. Like Salim-Suleiman's "Aashayein" (IQBAL -2005), this "menthol-ized" paced inspirational track is high on writing ("Geet mein dhalte lafzon, mein, Taal pe chalti nabzon mein, Naya kuchh naya to zaroor hai, Shaam se leke sehron mein, Dhoop jadi duphero mein, Naya kuchh naya to zaroor hai...) and is well balanced in its varying melodic tones, emoting out spectrum of emotions and situations. Amit Trivedi along with lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya makes perfect singing pair as they sings their parts well with fine grounding of tangy soft rock musical elements. This composition has added archetypical 70's rhythm "n" blues with fine concoction of distorted electric guitar riffs, rigorous kick-drumming and thriving percussions. Trivedi scores both as vocalist and composer and creates a likable chartbuster in the making and deserves accolades for generating life in this genre. Chartbuster!!!

Following the inspirational hues of previous tracks, the next soundtrack "Udaan-Nadi Mein Talab Hai" comes with similar tonality, set of arrangements and sounds like sequel to them. It has relatively higher tempo in its thriving beat patterns and comes with similar 70's rock band appeal. Amit Trivedi sings this with Joi Barua and Neuman Pinto and together they sounds like enthused choral singers, singing out their heart out for those inspiring moments in the flick. Once again, the lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya creates motivating feel in his meaningful writing about UDAAN and gives it a momentous "feel-good" song feel

Remember "Dhol Yaara" (DEV D -2009)? It was one of most note-worthy attribute in folksy genre that got rave reviews from everywhere and made style-statement of its kind. Amit Trivedi creates similar hysterical rustic feel in Mohan's earthy voices that gets amiable support of rock cum folksy composition in impressive sounding "Naav-Chadhti Lehrein Laang Na Paye". The composer scores brownie points in giving it a "fusion" feel that is strikingly high on hard-metal rock feel. Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics maintain motivational binge with added folklore based wordings, giving it an edgy sporty feel. Mohan's resonating high vocals are impressive in modulating tones and are well suited to the occasion. Trivedi maintains consistency in quality and standards and delivers three back-to-back impressive background scores for this off-beat album. Impressive!!!

For all those listeners who have rejoiced crap-wording tracks like "Pappu Can't Dance Saala" (JAANE TU YA JAANE NA -2008), "Ae Ganpat" (SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA-2007) ) and recently heard "Ullu Da Pattha" (TERE BIN LADEN), there is added amusement in weirdly written "Motumaster-Iski Maa Agar Isse". This Anurag Kashyap's written song works more on bizarre phrases, verbatim and one-liners and is likely to be making more relevance in its on-screen displays. There is variety of sounds, noises and voices and packs line-up of singers like Raman Mahadevan, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Bonnie Chakraborty, Kshitij, Shriram Ayyar, Tochi, Amit Trivedi and Anurag Kashyap to deliver out the frolicking feel of the situation.

"Aazaadiyan-Pairon Ki Bediyan", the last original soundtracks completes the chain of previously heard motivational tracks and gives final touches to this thought-provoking saga. It's another "avant-garde" and speaks language of happenings that should be inspirational for all those who prefer quality soft-rock music. Trivedi's intellect in imbibing classical "sitar" strings add to the soulful hues and extrudes it out in format of another impressive sounding "concert" rock song. There is brilliance of equilibrium in team-work of soft-toned Amit Trivedi, Neuman Pinto, Amitabh Bhattacharya and Nikhil D'Souza that gives it an urbane youthful rollicking "campus" feel. Bhattacharya's expressive notes on "Aazaadiyan" (freedom) ("Subah ki kirno ko rokein jo salaakhein hai kahan, Jo khayalon pe pehre daale woh aankhein hai kahan...) has that combustible ire that should be fuelling out the sentiments of protagonist. After hearing this note-worthy add, Amit Trivedi succeeds in creating set of impressive background scores that should be an added factor in story-telling mode and will be positive feature in flick's promotion and success. Inspiring!!!

The impressive musical show ends delightfully with soothing instrumental piano works that are subtly melancholic in its display in beautifully composed "Udaan theme". Felix Hug shows his deftness in piano drills that shows sensitivity of moments with added back-up vocals of Neuman Pinto and Joi Barua. It's enchanting in display and should be "worth-a-try" for all contemporary Bollywood music lovers.

UDAAN is "flight-to-success" in its experimental genre of cinema and delivers high standards of composing, singing and writing. After delivering out potential works in films like AAMIR (2008), DEV D (2009) and WAKE UP SID (2009), Amit Trivedi continues to impress with his style of work that is thematically oriented and is still entertaining for its target listeners. There is minty freshness and connectivity of thoughts in tracks like "Geet Mein Dhalte Lafzon Mein", "Naav-Chadhti Lehrein Laang Na Paye", "Kahaani-Aankhon Ke Pardon Pe", "Nadi Mein Talab Hai" and "Aazaadiyan-Pairon Ki Bediyan", which gives it the extra edge over many experimental albums. Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya deserves special applause for being rationally poetic and descriptively expressive in all his works. By now, I guess the word of mouth is already out. It shouldn't be news to anyone that 3 Idiots surely deserves three cheers, and more.

But the first thing you realize about this film is not that a 44-year-old Aamir Khan can play a 22-year-old college kid, and he can get away with it. Well, he does.

What you realise actually, as director Raju Hirani does, is that to make a very urgent point, one doesn't need to preach and get all self-serious. A lot can be said purely through songs and suspensions of disbelief. And a wonderful genre called comedy.

The film is actually a fairly serious take on a cruel examination system that gets passed off for an education system in this country.

We produce IIT graduates who take up high-paying jobs. We don't make original thinkers who could pick up a Nobel prize for an invention.

Aamir's Rancho is actually one such natural genius. He obviously can't fit into an Indian classroom, where all you have to do is mug up, to rise up. He plays the fool. But he still tops the tests. His two friends remain flunkeys throughout.

And that is because, one of them, is burdened by his family's expectations and a fear of exams. The other is passionate about wildlife photography, and not physics.

In India, even now, you should either be in engineering or medicine. It's usually the parents' promissory note. It's also a suicide note for many.

The hilarious skits between the three friends and their dull, dreaded professor here, Virus, played by Boman Irani, reveal a non-stop Munnabhai comedy with a similar purpose.

Rancho takes on Virus and the system. Virus takes on Rancho, and his friends. And one day, Rancho completely disappears. Many years later, his friends go out in search of who he was.

As Raju Hirani says, this film is about five per cent of Chetan Bhagat's bestseller Five Point Someone. This is in fact a hardcore Bollywood flick, which demands its own share of subjectivity while you watch many parts of the story fit very conveniently into the larger scheme.

The filmmakers know just when to throw in that emotional low, after a comical high. They know when the song is most appropriate. And when melodrama will do just fine. Very few contemporary Bollywood directors understand this now.

The fact that you don't feel like the fourth idiot watching 3 Idiots is, for its genre, the greatest relief. This is in every way Munnabhai - part 3. I think you shouldn't miss it at all.

Swaraswati Vidya Mandir School(SVMS) is a school which is focussed to nurture kids and believes that teaching is a noble profession. The principal of the school, Mr. Sahay (Nana Patekar) is an ideal principal who has not married to concentrate on his school. Soon, the trustees of the school realizes that the school is not generating enough revenue and gets into a brand building exercise.

In mid of all this, a new English Teacher Rahul (Shahid Kapoor) is recruited. As time passes, Rahul who loves his profession becomes popular among kids and his co-teachers. But, later he realizes that something wrong is happening in the institution. Rahul decides to find out the issue and was horrified to find out that in the name of extracurricular activities the school management is asking for heavy amount from the parents and when the parents are unable to pay the required money their kids are punished and are treated in-humanly.

Slowly-slowly the situation worsens and becomes a national issue. The last 10 minutes of the film is a must watch. It is the scene between the two lead actors Nana Patekar and Shahid which has the maximum impact.

Paathshala can be said an initiative to show the real picture of today’s educational institutes which has just become a business for the people and the true meaning of education has lost somewhere.

Ayesha Takia is wasted in the film. The music of the flick is given by Hanif Shaikh and has two good numbers.

You will not hate this love story, a spoof on ace director Karan Johar from his own production house. Hats off to Karan for daring to produce a film that makes fun of his kind of cinema. Samir Soni steps into his shoes with great ease in the film.

Director Punit Malhotra takes a pot shot at everything - designer sets, boy meets girl sagas, actresses singing in chiffon saris in the Alps - that made directors like Karan, Aditya Chopra and Kunal Kohli a name to reckon with in the industry.

In terms of content, nothing is new. But the treatment is fresh, the backdrop is interesting and it's fun watching the romance brew between the lead pair Simran and Jay on the sets of a movie. Yes, the film is about the making of a love story where Simran works as an art designer and Jay as an assistant to highly successful director Vir Kapoor (Samir), known for his candy floss romantic sagas.

Imran Khan as Jay Dhingra and Sonam Kapoor as Simran fit the bill quite perfectly. First time director Punit Malhotra proves his mettle by narrating a predictable story in such an interesting manner that you are hooked till the end.

A romantic by heart, Simran is contented with life. She is engaged to banker Raj, played by Sammir Dattani, and loves her job. But her life turns topsy turvy when the weird but funny, bratty but lovable Jay walks into her life as her assistant.

They have nothing in common. While Simran is highly disciplined, organised, professional and takes her work seriously, Jay is laid back and always late on the sets.

Yes, opposites attract here too, and they eventually fall in love. The first half is pacy and director infuses enough energy in this otherwise predictable love story. But some scenes in the second half drag.

Another flaw in the film is that Imran is given too many dialogues to speak, but then he delivers them with just the right expressions. He suits the role of a spoilt brat perfectly and keeps tickling your funny bone. Especially when he breaks down like a girl while talking to his mom (Anju Mahendru) on phone.

Editing could have been better, but never mind. In sum, the witty dialogues, on screen chemistry of the lead pair and performances of the supporting cast - Kavin Dave, Bruna Abdullah Aamir Ali and Pooja Ghai - make it a good watch.

Sonam may not have hits in her kitty so far, but this film should change things. In every scene, she complements Imran.

In terms of music, Vishal-Shekhar's pacy numbers add zing to the narrative and background music adds a nice flavour to this predictable love story.

I Hate Luv Storys proves that one can make good film without lavish sets, foreign locales and mega budgets. In short, a commendable effort by the first time director. You may not be a great fan of candy floss cinema, but do watch I Hate Luv Storys... it's refreshing.
