Firefox- Available for Meamo and MeeGo Device

Firefox for mobile (codenamed Fennec) is the name of the build of the Mozilla Firefox web browser for ARM devices such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

Firefox for mobile 1.0 uses the same version of the Gecko layout engine as Firefox 3.6. Its features include tabbed browsing, password manager, location-aware browsing, and the ability to synchronize with the user's computer Firefox browser using Firefox Sync. Plugin support was initially disabled by default, removing compatibility with popular web content types such as Adobe Flash. As of October 2009, Flash is supported.

The user interface is completely redesigned for small screen optimization, the controls are hidden away so that only the web content is shown on screen and it uses touchscreen interaction methods in place of dragging actions with a mouse.

MeeGo Tablet- Nokia Launch MeeGo Tablet In Q3 2011

According to a sneaky Nokia insider, the Finnish manufacturer is planning to launch its début tablet in Q3 2011.

The anonymous source failed to reveal any further details about the upcoming slate, apart from the fact that it will arrive running Nokia’s imminent OS, MeeGo. Although little is known about the platform, rumour suggests that its minimum hardware requirements include 512MB of RAM and a 600MHz processor.

Back in October, a Nokia executive let slip that the platform would be launching in early 2011, and revealed that its MeeGo smartphone range would be joined by tablet computers later in the year. Today’s revelation is further confirmation that we might not have to wait too long before we finally get our hands on a Nokia branded slate.

Nokia and Intel‘s MeeGo OS has already been demoed on a tablet, and we have to admit, it looks pretty swish. For your first glimpse at the upcoming platform, have a watch of the video below!

Meego 1.2 Hardware Requirement

The folks behind the new MeeGo operating system for smartphones have announced the minimum hardware requirements to run the upcoming MeeGo 1.2 operating system

. Basically in order to play, a handset will need a 600MHz or faster ARM v7 or x86 processor, 512MB or more of RAM, and 512MB or more of storage space.

Most higher end smartphones released in the last year or two already meet those specifications, so it doesn’t look like MeeGo is shooting for the stars here. But by making it clear that MeeGo 1.2 won’t support less powerful devices, the developers can focus on developing a user experience that should work well on all supported devices.

MeeGo 1.2 is due out in April.

Nokia Reject Android For Meego and Symbian

Nokia is bucking the trend to adopt Android and instead doubling down on its investments in MeeGo and Symbian.

Despite strong signs that it is going the wrong way, Nokia will continue to go it alone.

Stephen Elop, the company’s new CEO, will not create phones running Google’s Androidoperating system, reports the Wall Street Journal. Instead, it will rely on its new Symbian v3 and MeeGo operating systems for its devices. Elop’s reason: Android doesn’t allow innovation.

“Frankly, some of these alternatives in the market are not necessarily providing a lot of opportunity for innovation, and that is what we hear from people who are using those platforms at the moment,” he said in an interview. (Nokia’s new N8 phone is a mirror of Android phones.)

In recent years, Nokia has spent billions trying to keep up with other platforms. In 2007, it spent $8.1 billion to purchase Navteq, a company that competes with Google Maps. It’s also spent a good deal of time and money into its own app store and set of services called “Ovi,” which has seen much less support from the app community than Android and iPhone.

If it were to give up its platform, the phone maker would be forced to rely on superficial enhancements (like Motorola Blur or HTC Sense) to differentiate its software from the rest of the smartphone pack and retain its #1 sales position worldwide. However, by using Symbian or its new MeeGo OS, Nokia risks further alienating its smartphones from consumers and developers, who are piling onto iOS/Android-like operating systems by the bundle.

Nokia has lost 8 percent of its smartphone market share in the last year, falling from 44.6 percent to 36.6 percent of the market while Android and iOS rose significantly and the trend continues to worsen. Nokia has virtually no presence in the United States, one of the world’s largest smartphone markets. It cut 1,800 jobs in October.

Mobile OS space fragments further as AMD backs MeeGo

For a brief moment, it seemed that the mobile world was going to consolidate around three or four key operating systems, with each vendor selecting just one. That prospect is now remote, as a new breed of OS joins the market, and most major handset vendors rethink their software strategies for the next generation of their smartphones and internet gadgets.

So we see Intel rival AMD supporting MeeGo, the cloud oriented OS that Intel itself created with Nokia; and Sony Ericsson, fresh from dropping Symbian to focus its efforts on Android, reportedly opting for a second shot at Windows too.

MeeGo could soon see the odd situation of being supported by two key Intel competitors, AMD and Qualcomm - the penalty, as Google well knows, of creating a new platform while riding the open source wave. Qualcomm has expressed strong interest in the Linux-based OS, though it is likely to work more closely with Nokia than Intel - for now at least, the two vendors' strategies and release schedules remain separate, with Intel's mainly focused on netbooks. However, the activities of rival chipmakers could damage the key goal of using MeeGo as a differentiating software framework for Intel Atom.

AMD has joined the MeeGo open source project hosted by the Linux Foundation, and will provide engineering expertise intended to influence future releases and enhancements. "MeeGo represents an exciting, open source mobile operating system we expect to be adopted by mobile and embedded device makers over time," said AMD's corporate VP of software development, Ben Bar-Haim. "We expect that this operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units."

AMD is currently a gold level member of the Linux Foundation and has a seat on The Linux Foundation's board of directors.

Meanwhile, Windows Phone 7 is being taken seriously by most OEMs, even those which had only flirted with Windows Mobile, like Sony Ericsson (SEMC), or had sidelined it as its relevance dwindled, like Motorola. SEMC has only offered one Windows handset to date, the Xperia X1, which only managed lackluster performance despite pioneering an innovative user interface now adapted for its more successful Android family, Xperia X10.

Now it seems a new handset in the range, the Xperia X7 and its cutdown sister X7 Mini, may run Windows Phone 7, Microsoft's much improved new OS. The X7, according to rumors, will run a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, and have a SEMC's largest screen to date, at 4.3-inches (480 x 800 resolution), plus an 8.1-megapixel camera and HDMI video output. Surprisingly, leaks indicate the X7 Mini would have a more powerful camera, at 10.1-mp and rare 3x optical zoom, despite being otherwise lower spec'd, with a 1GHz single-core processor and 3.5-inch display. Both handsets are most likely to appear at SEMC's customary glitzy launch at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.

MeeGo 1.1 footage hits web, showcases app launching and switching

With much attention currently focused on the seemingly changeable fortunes of Symbian, the progress of Nokia's own smartphone OS – MeeGo – has been ticking over almost in the background.

However, a video filmed during the MeeGo Conference 2010 of what Engadget claims is Aava's Virta 2 handset running the OS has now hit the web, helping to cast some light on the latest version of the platform – MeeGo 1.1.

Smooth motion
Aside from some obvious aesthetic differences between versions 1.0 and 1.1, much attention was paid to the platform's home screen, which – when locked – provides access to the most commonly used applications in a quick launch bar at the bottom of the handset.

Other than that, organisers also showcased the ability to switch between apps in the appropriately named 'Switcher View'.

The view allows users to swipe between all apps and programs currently running on the phone, sporting what has to be said is strikingly smooth and fluid motion.

Slow the way to go
Of more worry, however, is the loading times the OS currently appears to be shackled by – Firefox, in particular, seemingly taking an age to pop up.

Indeed, compared to iOS 4 and Windows Phone 7, MeeGo has arguably been designed to accommodate a more pedestrian pace, the OS as a whole coming with a functional rather than flashy look.

Nokia Z500 Tablet Running MeeGo OS

Nokia Z500, Nokia’s effort Tablet PC is equipped with MeeGo operating system and was seen briefly on Ovi site Store.

Rumors about possible tablet PC Nokia Z500 appear on the surface again, this time sparked by a leak: On the Ovi website (Store Ovi – Nokia online store) was seen a product page for Z500. This page has been active for only a short time, but enough to shake a little spirits in May. Unfortunately, other details not currently exist.

Nokia Z500 Rumors began to rise since the summer. According to them, Tablet PC would be based on an ARM processor type, had a 7 or 9 inch display and operating system would run MeeGo.

Linpus shows off new touchscreen tablet UI based on MeeGo

The folks at Linpus have been offering customized Linux-based operating systems for netbooks for the past few years. The first netbooks that Acer released ran Linpus software.

As expected, the developers of Linpus are now taking aim at the tablet space with the launch of a new Linux-based OS designed for touchscreen displays.

Netbook News caught up with Linpus at aMeeGo conference recently, and got a first look at the new user interface. You can check it out in action in the video after the break. Unfortunately the demo hardware wasn’t really designed to take full advantage of the features such as multitouch gestures including pinch-to-zoom

Of course, you can also run the software on a netbook and use a keyboard and mouse to navigate.

The new version of Linpus is based on MeeGo Linux, and comes with the Firefox Mobile (or Fennec) web browser instead of the desktop version of Firefox. The mobile version is optimized for touch gestures. There’s also an eBook Reader, notepad app, and other applications that are deisgned for fingertip input, and an on-screen virtual keyboard which looks a lot like the Apple iPad keyboard.

Everything looks pretty good, but it will probably look a lot better when we can see the software running on appropriate hardware.
