Bottpower XR-1 transforming old Buells into Flat Trackers

David Sánchez from Bottpower tells me they’re working on a new project. A customer wanted them to build a chassis for a street bike that will have a flat track look to it using the wheels, suspension, brakes, engine and swingarm from a Buell XB. Their job, specifically, was to build the chassis, after which the owner will finish it to his own taste. Of course, being designers, they couldn’t help but try a few ideas of their own to see how the finished tracker might look and that’s what you see here.

The Harley XR1200 is the most similar thing you can find on the market, but while the Harley weighs 250 kgs (551 pounds) and has 85 HP, the BOTT XR-1 will weigh 170 kgs (375 pounds), will have more than 100 HP, and it will have much more aggressive geometries,

Now here’s the fun part, if they find there’s a lot of interest, they just might make a kit so you can put one of these together yourself. For those of you who liked the performance of the old Buells but were never really fond of the looks or just prefer the flat tracker, this might be just the ticket. It looks like something Harley could have built instead of the XR1200, a real lightweight performer with just enough flat track look to fit in with the Harley heritage. It might be time to grab one of those used Buells before everyone wants one for the parts.

2012 Suzuki Motocross Lineup Revealed

Suzuki announced its 2012 motocross lineup consisting of the RM-Z450, RM-Z250, RM-85 and RM-85L. All four models return unchanged save for graphic updates.

The 2012 Suzuki RM-Z450 and RM-Z250 (pictured above) are fuel injected and equipped with fully-adjustable Showa forks, twin-spar aluminum chassis and swingarm and five-speed transmissions.

The Suzuki RM-Z450 (pictured below) is powered by a 449cc Single and has a 1.6 gallon fuel tank, with a claimed curb weight of 249 pounds. The RM-Z250 uses a 249cc engine and has a 1.7 gallon fuel tank, and claims a curb weight of 230 pounds.

For younger riders, Suzuki offers the RM85 and the RM85L. Both models are powered by carbureted 84.7cc two-stroke engines and equipped with six-speed constant mesh transmissions and 1.3 gallon gas tanks.

The base RM85 uses a 17-inch front wheel and a 14-inch rear wheel and offers 12.8 inches of ground clearance. Taller riders may prefer the RM85L which uses a 19-inch front wheel and 1-inch rear wheel with 14 inches of clearance.

Valentino Rossi to help design future Ducati motorcycles

MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO, ITALY, JAN 12 – Valentino Rossi hopes to bring the MotoGP World Championship back to Ducati, but his more lasting legacy will come not on the race track but in the showroom, which will some day feature road bikes with design help from the nine-time world champion.

This was first revealed by Ducati CEO Gabriele Del Torchio in an informal gathering with journalists on Tuesday and later amplified by Ducati Corse CEO Claudio Domenicali during the Wednesday news conference he shared with designer and engineer Filippo Preziosi.

“I believe that he will have a tremendous impact on our brand and I believe that it will help us a lot in terms of technology development,” Del Torchio said, adding that Domenicali would have more to say on Wednesday. Del Torchio added that he was “expecting a contribution from Valentino in terms of product development.”

Don’t expect to rush down to your dealership any time soon to get a Rossi-designed 1198. A completely new bike could take three or four years, Domenicali said, “but it is also true that if today we do not start thinking about really new and really extraordinary for the next three years then we will not have anything if we don’t start now. This is typical of automotive companies who work with plans for five or six years. So today you start to think about the products for four or five year’s time.

“For us, this is an extraordinary opportunity to not only have the rider who won more world championships, who is now with us and who is capable of achieving fantastic sporting results, but it is a fantastic opportunity for us to explore a real fan of bikes who can give us his contribution, his suggestions and his opinions. Somehow we can allow the products that we are going to develop in the future can be influenced by his knowledge. I think that a sports bike tested by that type of a test rider is more likely...to be a really exceptional object as against one tested by someone else. It is not just a consultant. I think if anyone could have such a test rider, all would explore such a test rider.”

Ducati races to win, but also uses the race team as an R&D lab, an “advanced research lab,” Domenicali said, “in which we do advanced experimentations. We experiment, let’s say, new ideas, ideas which may become functional or not. We do not know beforehand: We test them there. And never as in 2011 our research lab has been, let’s say, so rich in the number of technicians.

“You’re all aware, of course, of Valentino’s expertise in giving interesting indications for the development of bikes and this is something which we believe may give us a push forward so it can allow us to better understand the dynamics of our bikes. And so we want to improve our design capacity. We want to make for our fans better and better bikes. This is our goal. And so this research lab is even more meaningful today, also because of some changes which have been made in the regulations.”

The regulations Domenicali referenced are the restriction on the use of six engines over the course of the season and the size of the gas tank. “These two issues force designers to continuously improve the reliability of the power unit and also it makes engines ever more efficient,” Domenicali said. “And the efficiency of the engines means lower fuel consumption.” Because the regulations are mandatory, it allows Ducati Corse to fine tune their engines and transfer that technology to their street bikes.

“So our race bikes are a real technological lab for us,” he said. “Also in the past we also focused on the 1198 for example, and we had said in the past many characteristics of this bike were taken from experience in MotoGP, from traction control and from part of the electronics. But we’re pushing this even more forward. So the new generation of sports bikes on which we are working and in the short term these are going to be presented, they’re going to follow up on this technological transfer.

“So the work that Filippo (Preziosi) has done will be seen even more so in the future as it was seen in the past. So the transfer of technology from MotoGP to road bikes is going to continue. So this means that not only we want to continue with this transfer of technology, but we also want both of our riders, so that is not only Valentino but also Nicky (Hayden), but specifically the fact that Valentino is going to be able to try the new road bikes that we are developing. We want to hear his indications, his suggestions for our road bikes, so as to make this bridge an effective and efficient bridge, and so also to be able to characterize our road bikes in the future. It’s a major challenge of course, all that I’ve said, and there’s a big responsibility on us, but we see it as an occasion for growth.”

As for whether he could envision a Rossi designed V-4 street bike, Domenicali said, “Never say never. We have already discussed his passion for motorcycles, he’s really keen to ride our products. So we are waiting for him to give his indication. It depends on what we decide together what will happen in future. The company is working well, with great product development. What we want is to continue thinking about the future. Either V4 or v-twin, we will decide."

Nissan Esflow Coupe Concept that runs on Electricity at Geneva

The time has come for Nissan to release its plans for the rapidly approaching Geneva Salon. For this year's edition of the show, the Japanese automaker has prepared an impressive sports coupe concept named the ESFLOW. It has most of the right ingredients to satisfy purists, including a rear-wheel drive layout, a 0 to 100km/h [62 mph] sprint time of under 5 seconds, two seats and an aggressive design, but there's a catch: it runs purely on electricity.

The Japanese automaker claims it has "captured the excitement of a sports car and the environmental benefits of an electric vehicle and blended them into one dramatic two-seater concept".
The ESFLOW has been created from the ground up as a pure electric vehicle using technology introduced in the Leaf EV. The concept model runs on two electric motors with an unspecified output that are placed above the axis of the rear wheels, in a mid-ship position. These motors independently control the left and right wheels, with Nissan claiming that the torque is optimized to ensure vehicle stability and control as well as efficient power regeneration.
The company says the electric motors produce enough torque in an instant for the car to reach 100km/h (62 mph) in under 5 seconds.

The motors are powered from the same laminated lithium-ion battery packs used in the Leaf, but in ESFLOW the packs are located along the axis of the front and rear wheel. The batteries are said to offer a driving range of over 240 kilometers or 149 miles on a single charge.
The car also features a composite body that covers an aluminium chassis which incorporates its own roll cage.
We don't have any photos of the interior yet, but Nissan said the cabin is "clean and open" with weight saving measures being a priority throughout its design.

If you have the dough, you can now officially own the world's fastest bike - the Suzuki Hayabusa. Suzuki Motorcycle India has finally decided to treat Indian biking enthusiasts with its iconic super sports tourer in September this year. Though long in the pipeline, the launch is now official with Atul Gupta, VP, Sales and Marketing for Suzuki Motorcycle India Ltd. saying, "We will launch the bike around."

Recently here on Motorcycle.com, we’ve been bringing you reviews of a handful of Honda scoots that are available to our neighbors (or is that neighbours?) to the North in Canada, yet remain forbidden fruit for American consumers.

Reviewer Costa Mouzouris gave us a look at the naked CB1000R that Honda Canada is considering importing, the already-available half-faired CBF1000, and the entry-level CBR125R.

Meanwhile, Honda’s competitors have also announced some new products for Canada that have yet to be made available in the U.S. Yamaha Motor Canada is importing the new Fazer 8 and FZ8, while Kawasaki Canada announced it will offer the new Ninja 400R.

But before you start thinking of Canada as the land of milk and honey and “$#!+ we ain’t getting”, Honda brings some sobering news about the Canadian motorcycle industry, especially when it comes to the Japanese manufacturers.

Warren Milner, Honda Canada’s senior marketing manager spoke recently with Canadian journos at a presentation in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and his message was blunt.

“As far as we’re concerned, the motorcycle business (in Canada) is bankrupt,” Milner says. “We’ve hit rock bottom, so now we’re going to rebuild.”

How bad has it been? The global economic downturn hasn’t hit Canada as hard as it has the U.S., but that doesn’t mean it’s been smooth sailing. To survive the recession, Honda Canada has been offering throat-cutting promotions on previous model years to clear out back inventory. Meanwhile, 2010 models haven’t been selling, despite Honda lowering the prices to narrow the gap between Canadian and U.S. pricing.

Honda’s efforts have put it back on top of the sales charts, but it low prices haven’t helped with profits. Even worse, according to Milner, the price slashing has lowered the value of the brand. After-sales support has also taken a hit as there isn’t enough money to provide it.

By contrast, European manufacturers such as BMW, Ducati and Triumph, have been able to keep up with sales without hurting the bottom line. The difference, according to Milner, is those companies have been selling the lifestyle and image of their brands, and in so doing, the value.

What will Honda Canada do now? No more discounts, for one thing. Customers will see dealers stick close to MSRP in 2011. They may also see some new models. The CB1000R, for one, is almost sure to arrive in Canada. There are other holes in Honda’s product lineup that could be filled.

Right now, Honda Canada’s best selling model is the CBR125R, which trails the Kawasaki Ninja 250R on Canada’s top sellers list.Both entry-level models have been doing a good job bringing in new riders, and Kawasaki’s new Ninja 400R (pictured above) will give those new riders an option to upgrade. But Honda doesn’t yet offer anything similar in that bracket. Its VTR250 naked V-Twin roadster sold in other markets would be a ready-made bridge from the CBR125 to the CBR600RR.

The Canadian motorcycle industry is much different than it is in the States, of course. With a smaller population, shorter riding season, not to mention different government regulations, Canada presents a different set of challenges for manufacturers. Still, there are lessons that can be applied to the U.S. market.

Honda was previously famous for bringing in new riders to the sport, but there are precious few small bikes in American Honda’s street lineup. Mahindra & Mahindra India's largest and utility vehicle maker, has finally fulfilled its long time dream to have a presence in the two-wheeler market. M&M has bought an 80 per cent stake in Kinetic Motor Company. Kinetic still continues to hold the balance stake in the company. Kinetic has been witnessing a steady decline in sales for last few years, ever since motorcycles have dominated the sector and suffering losses. Now with M&M coming on board, the company will get the much needed financial boost and return to the market with newer products.

M&M has been trying different options to enter into the Indian two wheeler market since the last few years. The company was first trying to join hands with a Chinese company, but when that did not work out, it considered buying the assets of the now defunct LML and then it even tried building its own scooter. However, with the acquisition of the assets of Kinetic, M&M is geared for the two wheeler segment. Anand Mahindra, vice chairman, M&M said, "Kinetic Motor is a strategic fit with our overall two wheeler strategy and the acquisition gives us an opportunity to emerge as a full range player with a presence in almost every segment of the automobile industry."
