Repatriation: Look Before You Leap – UK Statutory Residence Test

By Raoul Ruiz Martinez, Finesco Financial Services Ltd.: Most people will agree that following the prolonged Sovereign Debt Crises in 2011, 2012 is most likely the year when financial resilience will be required. As a result, repatriation for some will come as a necessity rather than an option in the search for both financial and family support.

The Way Forward?

By Peter Rexstrew, Managing Director - Premier FX: Early in the year we have already seen some currency volatility. Sterling against the euro has traded just above 1.21. But does this bode well for higher rates in the future? The UK economy is still struggling to grow and the UK could easily be weighed down by the troubles in Europe, as many UK banks are exposed to these countries.

Household Insurance

By David Thursfield, Marketing Coordinator - afpop: The most valuable asset for many people is their house, and its contents. It is false economy not to insure them or to insure them for an amount below their true worth. Natural disasters such as earthquakes are not unknown in Portugal and failure to insure the building itself adequately could have disastrous consequences.

More Euro Woes!

By Peter Rexstrew, Managing Director - Premier FX: The worsening situation in Greece has not helped the cause for the rest of a fragile Eurozone. Towards the end of 2011 the Greek government had its request for a referendum on the austerity measures reversed by the other members of the European Union. The euro stood up fairly well to this news, as it seemed that any agreement made on how to move forward with the necessary bailouts actually encourages investors to buy euros.

Opportunities in long term rentals

By Helen Jones, Director - Pelican Business Services: The Algarve attracts many incomers who settle here to try the lifestyle for themselves or to seek work in the tourism sector and these people have traditionally sought rented accommodation in the region. Lower demand for self catering accommodation from tourism is pushing landlords to make these properties available for long term rental or sale as well, increasing the choices available to rental tenants.

UpCountry Business Centre - Opportunity for Successful Businesses - Part 2

By Dennis Swing Greene, Chairman - euroFINESCO S.A.: As explained in Part I of this series, those who conduct successful businesses in the EU and beyond wanting a base of operations in Portugal, now have an unusual opportunity to benefit from advantageous fiscal legislation. New or existing limited liability companies setting up or transferring their operations to certain lesser developed regions in the interior can reduce corporate tax rates dramatically to as low as 10%.

Gardens in Portugal

By David Thursfield, Marketing Coordinator - afpop: Soil chemistry and geology
The soils in Portugal range from the rich volcanic soils of Madeira to the thin acid soils of the Alentejo and the alkaline sandy soils of the Algarve coast. In the areas with a hot and dry summer climate, the sun seems to bake dry the organic material which is then lost to the soil. As a result many of the soils in the coastal Algarve and the Alentejo are very poor in organic matter, but plenty of compost and mulching can work wonders.

Why good customer service pays

By Helen Jones, Director - Pelican Business Services: There has never been a more important time to set customer service as your priority, no matter what your business or profession. In the current economic climate many businesses are struggling to keep afloat and whilst it’s tempting to focus on finding as many new customers as you can, that may come at the cost of jeopardising the business you already have.

By Michelle Collins, Marketing Executive – Oceânico Group: Taking time out for yourself at a spa is for some, an indulgence and for others, an essential requirement in today’s hectic lifestyle. The word “Spa” comes from the town Spa in Belgium, which has medicinal mineral springs discovered in the 14th Century. Nowadays the term is used in a much wider context to describe a venue where people go to enjoy a “spa experience”.

The Winter Effect on your Property

By Brett Hawkins, Director - GMT 24:7 : The winter weather in the Algarve is not considered to be anywhere near as harsh as that of the UK. However, the relatively cold, wet, humid winters can have an undesirable effect on properties here in the Algarve.

“IRS” - What’s New in 2011

By Dennis Swing Greene, Chairman - euroFINESCO S.A.: Austerity is the watchword. With Portugal’s budget deficit approaching double digits, deep cuts have become inevitable. Over the course of 2010, program after program was announced to cut spending and raise revenues. Despite the rhetoric, market speculation has kept the government under constant pressure to make dramatic structure changes to rectify long-term imbalances. Time will tell whether these will be enough to keep the hounds at bay and solve the problems.

Golfer’s Paradise

By Michelle Collins, Marketing Executive – Oceânico Group: For many, the Algarve is synonymous with golf which is not surprising since the region offers over 30 established and well regarded courses, stretching from the west right through to the Spanish border. Sir Henry Cotton, an English professional golfer who won three Open Championships retired in the 1950s and became a successful architect of golf courses. He started the golf trend in Portugal by designing the 18 hole championship Penina golf course in the 1960’s. The region is now home to several of the world’s top courses and has played host to many international tournaments such at the European Tour’s Portugal Masters (Oceânico Victoria course 2007-2011).

Property Investment is a Serious Business

By Brett Hawkins, Director - GMT 24:7 : Being the single biggest investment most of us make, an investment in property is one we should all take very seriously. However, we are all guilty of not giving our properties the due care and attention that this level of financial investment truly deserves. For example, when was the last time you had your property inspected by a professional experienced tradesman?

Activities in the Algarve – some new inspiration

By Helen Jones, Director - Pelican Business Services: The Algarve is famous for its beaches, golf and water sports but how often do you search for something different to do if you spend a lot of time or live here? And when friends and family come to stay do you rack your brains to think of something a little bit different to entertain them? In spite of its reputation as a fabulous holiday destination, the Algarve is also home to a number of more unusual activities that you perhaps wouldn’t normally associate with a holiday location.

The Algarve Property Scene

By Raoul Ruiz Martinez, Finesco Financial Services Ltd., Glasgow: I have seen reaction to the fundamental after-effects of what has happened at ground zero, here in the Algarve, as a consequence of the global financial and sovereign debt crises. The latest of these being Irish package, EU countries and the International Monetary Fund that is to provide up to €85bn in total. One might even suggest that this maybe inextricably linked with Irish-related property investments made in Portugal.

Learning Portuguese

By David Thursfield, Marketing Coordinator - afpop: Living in a foreign country is so much more interesting and far less frustrating once one is able to communicate well. Knowing the language is a key to understanding the culture and why things are done as they are. It can reveal areas that other cultures undervalue or may even not even be aware of. For those who work, knowledge of Portuguese can be critical to success. Students who attend local schools will find that their results depend very much on how well they understand the language, and how well they are able to express their knowledge in Portuguese.

Portuguese Property versus Property in the UK & Ireland

By Brett Hawkins, Director - GMT 24:7 : We all know why we love Portugal, whether it’s because of the beautiful golden sandy beaches, the attractive architecture, or the fact that there’s always something to do, from golf to tennis, dolphin watching to exploring Portugal’s epic history. But, at the end of the day we all love the dependable climate, your preference might be the searing hot summers, or the mild winters, or both.

By Helen Jones, Director - Pelican Business Services: Buying a property overseas brings with it additional challenges to purchasing at home and amid all the confusion many buyers ignore the basic principles that they would normally apply to the situation, sadly ending up with a compromised purchase they could have avoided.

The Need to Know - Owning Property in Portugal

By David Thursfield, Marketing Coordinator - afpop: Living or owning property in a foreign country is an exciting prospect for many and a dream for many more. The ease of travel to other parts of the world, both in affordability of flights and choice of destinations, led to a boom in 'overseas' holidays over the past 15 years or so. And the internet has had an important impact on how and where we travel and how we make the booking in even more recent times.

Fit For the New Year

By Michelle Collins, Marketing Executive – Oceânico Group: “I’m going to lose weight and get fit this year!” How often have we said this in January only to lapse back to our couch potato status after a couple of months of enthusiastic, sweaty work-outs at the local gym? One of the main reasons we don’t keep to our resolutions is boredom or we don’t see the benefits quickly enough. That is why it is important to choose an exercise regime which is best for you and with the mild Algarve climate, consider outdoor options as well as indoor fitness regimes.

By Helen Jones Director - Pelican Business Services Holiday lettings websites offer property owners a low cost mechanism to market their properties to a global audience, but many owners make some common mistakes.
Fiscal representation is a must

By Dennis Swing Greene Chairman euroFINESCO S.A. When investing in property in Portugal, many non-residents fail to realise that they are required to designate a Fiscal Representative to assure that they meet any tax obligations that may arise. Even without income, a fiscal representative is mandatory when first acquiring a Portuguese Tax Number (Cartão de Contribuinte), a necessary document to conduct almost any official business.
