Q&A Arrival of AOD Converters for Melt Shop At New Calvert Facilities

Q: What does AOD stand for? A: AOD stands for "argon oxygenated decarburization," and represents the second stage of production in the stainless steel Melt Shop. The AOD Converter blows argon and oxygen into the molten material from the electric arc furnace to reduce the carbon content of the steel. Q: Where are the AOD converters coming from and how were they transported?A: The AOD converters for our stainless steel Melt Shop are coming from SVAI facilities in Dalian, China. They left the SVAI facility and were transported to the Port of Dalian where they set sail on June 23, 2010 via cargo ship and arrived the Port of Mobile on July 24. The converters were loaded onto a barge at Pier 5 General Break/Bulk Terminal at the Port downtown Mobile and traveled up the river to our facilities. Q: What are the converters made of and how much do they weigh?A: The converters were special ordered and heat treated for the AOD process and took 12 months to fabricate. In November 2009, a special team was assembled and traveled to China to examine the quality and determine they met ThyssenKrupp standards. Each converter weighs approximately 120 metric tons and has the capacity to hold 185 metric tons of liquid steel. Q: What happens when they arrive at the site? A: They are being offloaded by cranes at our new barge terminal on the Tombigbee River and transported via truck to the laydown area outside our Hot Annealing and Pickling Line until erection.Q: Why do we need three?A: It is a standard best practice to have three converters in rotation for a Melt Shop since they need regular maintenance: At all times, one is in operation, one spare is waiting, and one is being prepared.Q: Does this mean the Melt Shop is moving ahead? What is the timeline for the Melt Shop?A: We have been proceeding with pouring the columns for the Melt Shop, full engineering and design and receiving equipment so that it is in place when our board determines a final schedule for startup.

Q&A Arrival of First ThyssenKrupp Stainless Coils Onsite At New Calvert, AL Facilities

Q: Where did the coils come from?A: The coils were originally shipped from our ThyssenKrupp Stainless facilities in Krefeld, Germany. They left Krefeld by railcar traveling to the Port of Antwerp, where they sailed on June 1 via Clipper Steel Services http://www.clipper-group.com/web/clipper.nsf/content/wwww6vbgpn and arrived in the Port of Mobile on June 23, 2010, where they were off-loaded and placed in storage.Q: Why were they stored at the docks?A: One of the advantages of our new world-class site is that we are co-located with our sister company, ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, for maximum efficiencies. We were able to coordinate schedules for bringing both our coils and their carbon steel slabs up the river on the same trip, a great example of that efficiency. Q: When did the barges depart from the docks and how long did it take them to arrive at the River Terminal?A: Loading of our coils began at the Port of Mobile at 8 am on Thursday, July 22 and unloading began at our project site barge terminal at 7 am on Friday, July 23. They were barged up the river by AEP River Operations to our facilities along with some incoming slabs for our sister company in Calvert. They are being offloaded at our new river terminal and transported by ThyssenKrupp InPlant Services via truck to our new Cold Rolling Works for hot commissioning (testing). Their arrival marks a true milestone for our project with many important partners including ThyssenKrupp Nirosta in Krefeld, the Alabama State Port Authority, Clipper Services shipping, Tri-State Marine Services stevedores, AEP River Operations and ThyssenKrupp InPlant Services.Q: What type of coils are they? A: This shipment contains 36 hot rolled white coils. Each coil weighs between 17-24 metric tons. Q: Will you then sell this product to customers?A: While the initial product is being used primarily for the equipment tests, if these tests yield saleable product according to our strict customer specifications, we will hold them for sale. Q: When is your next shipment?A: ThyssenKrupp Stainless in Krefeld, Germany has already loaded our next shipment. It set sail the last week of June and is due to arrive in the Port of Mobile around August 12.

ThyssenKrupp Announces Completion Of Water Treatment Facilities For New Alabama Mills

ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA and ThyssenKrupp Steel USA today announced the completion of the process water and wastewater treatment systems at its new facilities in Calvert, Alabama. The systems were designed and built by N.A. Water Systems, a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies (VWS) company located near Pittsburgh, PA. The water systems will be operated by Veolia Water under a long-term outsourcing contract. The process water system is currently operating for the commissioning of equipment for the new carbon steel and stainless steel facilities. The carbon steel operations are building to a manufacturing capacity of 4.3 million metric tons of carbon steel products, with plans to start up its hot strip mill this summer and ramping up to include cold rolling and galvanizing processes. The stainless steel operations are building to a manufacturing capacity of 1 million metric tons of stainless steel products beginning this fall with cold rolling and finishing processes, and a later ramp-up of hot and cold forming operations and a melt shop. Total treatment capacity for the process water is 14.4 million gallons per day (MGD). The 5.8-MGD capacity wastewater treatment system also has been completed and stands ready for operation once steel production begins this summer. Both systems incorporate VWS' patented ACTIFLO Turbo sand-ballasted clarification technology. The wastewater treatment system also includes VWS' AnoxKaldnes Moving Bed Bioreactor (MBBR) integrated with an activated sludge process for organics removal, and chemical conditioning using an innovative TURBOMIX(TM) reactor for metals precipitation. These technologies enable the treatment processes to produce high-quality water within a very small footprint as compared to conventional systems."Today's announcement is a culmination of more than two years of extraordinary teamwork with Veolia Water, local contractors R.J. Baggett and Gulf Electric, and Crowder Construction," said ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA Construction Coordinator John Hayden. "The plant is designed with the latest technology to safeguard the environment and provide flexibility for future growth, and builds upon ThyssenKrupp's well known commitment to sustainability." N.A. Water Systems completed the design-build projects with value-added engineering and an exemplary safety record, on schedule and under the budget originally projected. Company InformationIn May 2007, ThyssenKrupp announced that it would build the new state-of-the-art steel and stainless steel processing facilities in Alabama after a highly competitive site selection process in the U.S. Once operational, the facilities will operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
