Fresh and local is what we are about, our Head Chef Stephen Park uses the best locally sourced ingredients, whether that is our handmade Pure Bred Highland Beef burgers from Barker's, fresh trout from the Trossach's Trout farm or our local malt whisky from Deanston Distillery to give you an authentic taste of Scotland. We are normally open every day of the year.

Museum Opening Hours: April to October: 10.00 am to 5.00 pm (closed Sundays) Admission: Adults - £2.00; Concessions - £1.50; Students Family Groups 6 or more - £1.00; Children - 50p (under 5 free) Disabled Access: Limited access, no ramp due to tomb stones at front entrance. A small wheelchair is available for use in the downstairs main room. We also have a 'tour of the museum' on DVD which can be viewed outwith the building. ● Marvel at how stone age and bronze age people existed with relatively limited technology and (to us) primitive utensils. ● Fathom the mysteries of a Pictish symbol stone. ● Examine the crofting tools of a more recent age that still relied on skill rather than technology. ● Relive life in the croft house, the school room and the village shop that are all a world away from the Internet. ● Imagine the locals joining in an impromptu ceilidh at the end of another hard day on the croft, sustained by the produce of the dairy but fuelled by the product of the illicit whisky still. ● Examine the locally built and owned fishing boats and compare the rigours of earning a living off the sea in these small, open craft with today's purpose-built, sea-going trawlers. ● Reflect on the relief of the seaman as the beam from one of the largest lenses assembled by the Northern Lighthouse Board guides him to safety without the help of radar or satellite navigation.

Caithness Horizons houses a permanent exhibition which uses the Museum’s Collection of objects to tell the story of the county of Caithness from the geological period known as the Devonian (about 416 to 359 million years ago) to the present day. Some of the star objects that are on display in the permanent exhibition are: Caithness Horizons is also home to a temporary exhibition gallery, which plays hosts to an annual programme of changing exhibitions. In addition Caithness Horizons has a lovely Gift Shop and Café which serves delicious home-baking. Caithness Horizons is fully accessible and is located on the High Street in Thurso at the north east end of the pedestrianised area. Parking is available immediately opposite the Museum on the High Street. There is more parking within an easy walk of Caithness Horizons on Meddow Lane.
