General Tricks

Windows hidden "god mode" folder Windows offers a centralized Control Panel for all of the OS settings, which makes it easy for users to tweak everything from desktop background to setting up a VPN. To enter this mode, create a new folder with this exact name (copy and paste it): God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}. The folder icon will change to a Control Panel-style icon, and you will be able to jump in and change all kinds of settings. Note: Don't try this on Windows Vista 64-bit as it's known to cause a reboot loop.

Use Problem Steps Recorder This handy tool automatically records any mouse clicks and takes screenshots for you. If you need tech assistance with your computer, go to Run by typing Windows + R, and then type "psr." Use the tool and by the time you are finished, you can send this information, neatly compiled automatically, to the person helping you with the issue. It will make the process of finding the problem much easier for them, which means you will be able to get your system up and running faster.

Find/Delete large files wasting space A handy tool called WinDirStat (Windows Directory Statistics) can be used to easily find which files and folders are taking up the most space on your drive. From there, you can delete them and open up a ton of storage space.

Reduce the number of programs running at startup If your PC is taking too long to boot, it’s probably because you have far too many programs running at startup. Reducing this is easy, it will make your PC launch noticeably faster and lighter upon first load. To change the items running at startup, go to Run using the hotkey Windows key + R, and type "msconfig." A small window will appear (see the screenshot below), select the Startup tab. From here you will be able to turn off many startup programs, which can shave several seconds (or minutes) off your boot time. (Note Windows 8 has moved this functionality to the Task Manager). Try to make sure you research what you are turning off as some processes might be needed by third party programs or drivers you have installed.

Cloud backup important files If you’re working on a critical paper for school, work, or any other major project, make sure you are backing up the file not just locally. You can use services like Dropbox, Google Drive, or any of the other popular cloud storage solution which will do the legwork for you on the background. Of course, you can also throw the files on a thumb drive or external HDD just to be safe but backing up to the cloud can be done seamlessly which is twice the advantage.

Typing Tricks

Delete an entire word Instead of deleting a single letter, pressing CTRL + BKSP will delete the entire word behind the cursor. This makes deleting text quicker if you screw up a whole word.
Move Cursor to beginning of the next or previous word Moving the cursor around manually while typing is a great way to make your work take longer than it needs to. To speed of the process, move the cursor around with keyboard shortcuts. To move it to the beginning of the previous word, use CTRL + Left Arrow. To move it to the beginning of the next word, use CTRL + Right Arrow. In OS X you can accomplish the same using the Option key.
Making sub and superscript text If you need to make sub or superscript text (think exponents for superscript), press CTRL + = for subscript and CTRL + SHIFT + = for superscript.
Paste plain text of what was copied When you copy text from any source, programs will usually copy any formatting that comes with it. To paste this as plain text, press CTRL + Shift + V instead of the standard CTRL + V, and the system will paste unformatted text.
Note that many programs follow this parameter (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) but not all, particularly Microsoft programs like Word or Outlook. For those there's a few alternatives that go beyond copying and pasting in Notepad: 1) CTRL + ALT + V will show a 'paste special' dialog box. 2) CTRL + Spacebar will remove formatting in already pasted text. 3) Download Puretext and choose a hotkey to always paste plain text with
it.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Copy only active window to clipboard Normally, the Print Screen key copies the entire display (or two displays if you got them), ALT + Print Screen only copies the currently active window to the clipboard. Whether taking a screenshot to diagnose a problem, or just because you want to show something to a friend, this will come in handy.
Fix those little mistakes Did you know you can undo almost any action? CTRL + Z is the ultimate hot key, and for sure you knew about it already, however note that undo doesn’t just apply to typing. If you accidentally delete or move a file, you can hit CTRL + Z to bring it right back to where it was. In Chrome and Firefox you can also undo closing a tab using CTRL + SHIFT + T.
Cycle through open windows Pressing ALT+TAB allows you to cycle through currently open windows. This makes switching back and forth between running processes quick and painless. If you want a more stylish method of cycling through open programs, Windows + TAB will do the job for you.
Interrupt all processes CTRL + ALT + Delete is one of the most common PC shortcuts, and one almost everyone is familiar with. The important thing to note is that it interrupts all processes, including the one that is bogging down your system, which can mean the difference between needing to restart or not.

Close the current program Typing ALT + F4 will close the program that is running. This is useful as it saves you time mousing over the "X" and clicking. People will often use this as a joke, telling you to press ALT + F4 to fix a problem. Don’t fall for it unless you want to close what you are doing.
Minimize all windows Sometimes you have a bunch of stuff running, and you want it all to go away so you can get to the desktop. Simply pressing Windows + D will minimize everything you have up, which will save you some time pressing the minimize button for each window. It should be noted that Windows + M offers similar functionality, but there is no undoing, so Windows + D is the more favorable approach.
Open the task manager directly If you want to bypass the interrupt that happens when pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL and jump right to the task manager, typing CTRL + Shift + ESC launches it directly.
Close the current window/tab Stick of moving all the way to that X button? Press CTRL + W and the current window will close. (Don’t do it now, or you will miss the rest of the tricks!)
Bring up the system information window This is so much quicker than digging this out the traditional way... Just press Windows + Pause/Break and the System Information panel will be ready to go. This might be the only use for the Pause/Break key you will ever find, so enjoy it!

Better multiple monitor control There are several useful keyboard shortcuts for controlling open windows on multiple monitors. Pressing the Windows Key + Arrow Keys will cause a window to quickly snap to each side of either monitor. Alternatively, hitting Shift + Windows Key + Arrows will cause the window to jump to the other monitor. Lastly, pressing Windows + P will allow you to quickly set up a second display or projector.

Web Browsing Tricks

Automatically add www. and .com to a URL You can shave off a couple of seconds typing in a URL by simply click CTRL + Enter after you type the name of the site. Need .net instead of .com, press CTRL + Shift + Enter instead.

Jump to address bar There are a number of ways to jump right to the address bar from anywhere in browser. Pressing CTRL + L, F6, and ALT + D all accomplish this goal.
Bring back a closed tab We covered this already, but it's super useful. Accidentally closed a tab? Simply press CTRL + Shift + T to reopen the most recently closed tab and get back to what you were doing.
Use private browsing The uses for not having cookies and history saved are obvious for certain activities, you know, like shopping for gifts on a shared computer (of course!). Pressing CTRL + Shift + N will launch a new private in Chrome, CTRL + Shift + P will do it in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Cycle through open tabs Pressing CTRL + TAB while in a browser will flip between each one. This can be much faster than moving the mouse and clicking on a tab. CTRL + NUM (1, 2, 3, 4, n..) will also take you to certain tab in that numeric order.

File Management Tricks

Rename a file quickly Right-clicking and selecting rename is not very efficient. Instead, simply press F2 while a file is selected to change its name. To alter the name of another file, type TAB without deselecting the current file.
Rename files sequentially in Windows You actually don’t need to download any programs to perform a batch file rename in Windows. Instead, you can select all the files you want to change, right-click the first one in the list, select rename (or use F2), and type in the name. This will automatically change all the other files with the same root name with a suffix: (1), (2), and so on.

Select multiple files using the keyboard To select a bunch of files using your keyboard, you can press Shift + down arrow to select a single file or Shift + Page Down to select a large group of files at one time.

Security Tips

Run programs on an infected PC Often times, malware will prevent a computer from running certain programs. Changing the name of the .exe file can often override this. If that doesn’t work, changing the extension to .com is another useful alternative, and the program will still be able to run in spite of the extension change.
Read installers Even major programs can install toolbars and other unwanted pieces of software during installation. Take a few seconds to read each step to make sure you are not agreeing to install something other than the program you were actually seeking. Far too often people just push next over and over, and end up with a browser covered in various search bars that just aren't needed. In the worst of scenarios, these can have nefarious intentions.
Lock your computer if you get up Sick of your "friends" going onto your computer at work or home and posting things on your Facebook/Twitter page on your behalf? It’s certainly an annoyance, but an easy one to prevent. Windows + L will lock your system right away, requiring a password (if you've set one) to log in again.

Program-Specific Tricks

Photoshop: Drag the marquee without losing the ability to size it The marquee tool is, at its most basic level, designed for selecting a part of an image. It’s used constantly in Photoshop, and there is a handy trick many users miss. While dragging it around, you can press space, which will allow you to size it while moving it. This saves time by letting your perform two key functions at the same time.
Steam: Move games to another drive or partition By default, Steam installs all games to the same HDD or partition, but what happens if that fills up? The solution: download Steamtool Library Manager. It makes it easy to move games to another hard drive without messing with the functionality of Steam.

VLC: Fix unsynced audio and subtitles In the popular media player VLC, if your audio loses sync with
the video or subtitles, there is an easy way to fix this. Simply pressing J or K will move the audio forward or backwards. Similarly, to sync the subtitles you can press H or G.

Microsoft Exhibited 7-inch Bay Trail Windows 8 Tablet at Computex 2013

Computex 2013 has recently showed us devices with cutting edge technologies and features. Asus and Acer revealed their laptop and ultrabook along with Hybrid PC/tablet and kindled joy among many tech geeks. However, they were not the only ones to be the apple of the eye in the Computex 2013. There was one more company that showed its elegance with the introduction of a tablet featuring Windows 8.1 OS.

Yes! The talk is about the Taiwanese OEM Inventec that demoed reference design of a concept tablet called "Lyon".

To go by the specs, this so called Lyon tablet is powered by a 22nm quad-core Intel Bay Trail-M processor clocked at 1.66GHz and has 2GB of RAM. The device is said to have 1280 x 800 resolution IPS screen and can be expected to come with 64GB or 128GB of internal storage.

Reportedly, Lyon was displayed during Microsoft's keynote. The 7-inch Lyon can only manage about 3.5 hours of video playback. However, Inventec claimed that the hardware and driver optimizations would boost that degree.

There is a range of connectivity options despite the Lyon's smaller size. The tablet features WiFi and the model that Inventec showed at Computex 2013 housed a micro USB host port, HDMI output and reports say that it's ready and willing to install front and rear-facing cameras.

It is also said that the Bay Trail tablets are expected to run both on Windows 8.1 and Android, and the screen size of these devices should be around 7 to 10-inches. When it comes down to the price it is reported to come around $199, which is supposedly the perfect price for Windows 8.1 tablets.
In fact, Hermann Eul, vice president and general manager of Intel's mobile and Communications Group, during a news conference at Computex in Taipei on Wednesday said, "We believe we can push it well below the $199 price point". Furthermore, he also said that the Bay Trail-powered tablets does not only allow for a cost effective selling price, but also for increased battery life. Users should expect to experience eight hours or more of battery life in active usage, and weeks on standby.

Other features are that Bay Trail Windows 8.1 tablets will support 3D games along with running Microsoft Office 2013. The new chips will also be two times faster than the current Atom chipsets, and three times faster on graphics.

Talking about the Intel's new Bay Trail chips, reports suggested that this chip is not only for tablets, but for smartphones as well. It was said that the first tablets powered by the new chipset should show up in a Samsung Android device and a tablet with the Asus brand name.
The Lyon tablet however has to face 8-inch Acer Iconia W3 tablet, which is currently the only other "small" Windows 8 device unveiled at the Computex 2013 show.

How to play DVDs and Blu-ray discs in Windows 8

With the release of Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro, Microsoft made the decision to remove DVD playback, and forego the inclusion of Blu-ray playback. Whereas with Windows 7 you could slot a DVD into your computer and open it in Windows Media Player, that is no longer the case with Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.

There is a very simple reason for this: The codecs required to play DVDs and Blu-rays — primarily MPEG-2/4 for video and Dolby Digital for audio — cost money. For every copy of Windows 7 sold, Microsoft has to pay MPEG-LA (a patent-holding consortium) $2. Microsoft doesn’t give the exact figure for a Dolby Digital license, but it’s probably in the same ballpark. This cost is passed on to the consumer, whether you play DVDs or not. For Windows 8, with streaming services taking hold and optical drives dying out, Microsoft basically decided that it wasn’t worth paying for the codecs.

If you do want to play DVDs on Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, however, there are two very easy solutions.

Install Windows 8 Media Center Pack

If have purchased (or otherwise acquired) Windows 8 Pro, you can obtain Windows Media Center for free until January 31, 2013. All you have to do is enter your email address and a free license key will be sent to you. After January you will have to purchase the Media Center Pack (it’s unlikely to be too expensive; $20 maybe).

If you only have the vanilla version of Windows 8, you will need to purchase the Windows 8 Pro Pack, which costs $70. For that, you get a full version of Windows 8 Pro, Media Center, BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop, and a few other tidbits.

Once you have Media Center installed, you will be able to play DVDs — but only in Media Center, not Media Player. You also gain the ability to watch and record broadcast TV, if you so wish. You won’t, however, be able to play Blu-ray discs — for that, you’ll need a third-party player.

Install a third-party player

The other option, of course, is to simply install VLC — a free, open-source media player that will play all of your DVDs and unencrypted Blu-ray discs. VLC will also play encrypted Blu-ray discs, but that’s beyond the scope of this story.

If you prefer commercial, closed-source software, there’s always the infamous Cyberlink PowerDVD , which plays DVDs and Blu-ray discs — but it’ll set you back around $50. Don’t forget, though, that most modern computers are bundled with some kind of DVD/Blu-ray player — and if you bought a standalone Blu-ray drive, it almost certainly came bundled with some software.

Windows 8, Windows 8 everywhere, but not a tablet in sight? While we openly admit that is a poor rendition of the mariner saying, you probably still get the picture. Microsoft has been pushing on all fronts to ensure the adoption of its latest operating system, and while advertising and awareness is one half of the equation, the other is hardware.
While Windows 8 will run on all desktops that meet its rather modest minimum requirements, Microsoft is taking your OS beyond the PC, and putting it into tablet-like form factors. In theory, it’s a great idea, given how the iPad has pushed the current era into what is being called as the “post-PC era.”

With the promise of touch-friendliness and overall low resource footprint for Windows 8, Microsoft wielded its heavy sword of OEM partners, soon they were all off to make some incredible Windows 8 tablets that run the desktop version of the OS – called Windows 8 Pro tablets.

However, with so many devices invading the markets, it can be a little confusing as to what’s available and what’s not, along with what to actually be excited about and what product to just pass over. So to make it easier, we’ve got a small list of Windows 8 Pro tablets that are either already available or shall be soon in the Indian market.

Dell XPS 12
There isn’t a segment in the computing world that Dell’s not invading. The Dell XPS 12 is the company’s entry into the ultrabook-tablet-hybrid space. True to its XPS moniker, this 12 incher is an ultrabook in specs, featuring Intel’s Core i5 (and i7) processors along with the option to choose between 4GB or 8GB of RAM.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2
With bigwigs getting into the Windows 8 Pro game, there was no way Lenovo was going to sit this one out. The Chinese manufacturer that took over IBM’s personal computing division has announced a 10mm thick, 10.1 inch Windows 8 Pro tablet for the global markets that is yet to receive a launch date in India.

Exact specs of the ThinkPad Tablet 2 are still a mystery, but a full size USB port, an Ethernet jack along with optional 3G/4G connectivity is known to be present.

Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 and Stylistic Q572
The Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 will be an i3/i5 based machine with 4GB of RAM with the option of 64, 128 and 256GB SSD storage. What’s also part of the package is an 11.6 inch screen with dual-digitizer, giving it an oversized tablet feel, there is also a keyboard dock to turn this into a full fledges ultrabook.

The Stylistic Q572 is just a smaller version of the Q702, with a 10.1 inch screen. If that’s not convenience enough for you, there is also a removable battery on this machine, making replacements a breeze. The other interesting fact about this nifty tablet is that it’s the AMD Z-680 APU, instead of Intel chips.

Samsung Ativ Smart PC and Ativ Smart PC Pro
The Korean heavyweight Samsung recently launched two Windows 8 Pro tablets in the country, the Smart PC and Smart PC Pro. The Smart PC is an Intel Atom powered device with 2GB of RAM with an 11.6 inch screen. The Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro runs on the Intel Core i5 with 4GB of RAM with an 11.6 inch display sporting full HD resolution.

Both the Ativ Smart PC tablets come bundled with a keyboard dock and feature multiple USB ports and a microSD slot to increase the storage space. The Samsung Ativ Smart PC starts at Rs. 53,990 while the Ativ Smart PC Pro is pegged to start at Rs. 75,490.

Asus VivoTab and VivoTab Smart
Asus has become a strong name in the tablet space. The Transformer and Transformer Prime were impressive pieces of craftsmanship that allowed the Taiwanese company to gain some traction in a market dominated by Apple. Asus has now partnered with Microsoft on the VivoTab and VivoTab Smart, two tablets that will run Windows 8 Pro. Both the tablets run on Intel Atom Z2760 dual core CPU @ 1.8GHz along with 2GB of RAM.

Both the Asus VivoTab and VivoTab Smart come with 64GB of SSD storage (VivoTab gives you the option for 32GB). The key difference between the two is the screen size (10.1 inches on the VivoTab Smart vs. 11.6 inches on the VivoTab) along with the fact that the VivoTab comes with Wacom Digitzer Stylus making drawing and writing on the tablet a breeze. Asus’ PR is still getting back to us about pricing, and we’ll update you as soon as they do. They are expected to be in the market soon.

The Nokia Lumia 610 is a simple phone with a simple goal: make the Windows Phone experience even more accessible. This basic smartphone is priced to not gather dust on the shelves and you can guess the features aren't exactly top notch. But this is where the Lumia 610 is perhaps more fortunate than its expensive siblings. It must be harder for the likes of the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 to get away with some of the platform's limitations.

The Lumia 610 looks a lot like the 710 on the outside, but has less-capable hardware inside. Now, that means even tighter limits on what the phone can do but it's an entry-level smartphone after all. The long list of cons might ring a lot of bells and, if you are familiar with the Windows Phone OS you already know most of them are platform-wide limitations. On the other hand, familiarity with the OS most probably takes you off the list of potential Lumia 610 targets. It's rather a beginner's smartphone, one that will introduce you to WP7 if you're ready to move on from feature phones.

Google releases another Nexus phone, larger tablet and 3G Nexus 7

Apple has recently released the iPhone 5, a new 7-inch iPad called “iPad mini” and iPad 4 and now Google is ready to compete with Apple with a new Nexus smartphone made by LG called the Nexus 4, an iPad-sized tablet called the Nexus 10 made by Samsung and 32GB Nexus 7 with 3G option. The search engine giant rolled out these three new devices last week with the latest version of Android operating system, Jelly Bean 4.2. The company unveiled them in an official blog post as the special event was canceled as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Let’s see if these devices are really worth adding to your holiday shopping list or not.

Google Nexus 4

The Google Nexus 4 made by LG is here to replace the aging Samsung Galaxy Nexus so let’s see if the latest Nexus smartphone is offering a massive upgrade or not.

The LG Nexus 4 is actually heavier than the old Nexus smartphone at 139g while the iPhone 5 is only 112g. The new Nexus smartphone offers 9.1mm thickness while the old one was 8.94mm and the iPhone 5 is only 7.6mm. However, the iPhone 5 features only a 4-inch LED-backlit IPS screen with 326ppi and 640×1136 pixels while the Nexus 4 features a larger 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus screen with 318ppi and 768×1280 pixels. If you compare the LG Nexus 4 with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, it’s not really a massive upgrade. But if you compare it with the iPhone 5, LG Nexus 4 is clearly the winner here.

Now it’s time to see what these devices are offering under the hood. The Nexus 4 offers a major hardware upgrade with an outstanding 1.5GHz Qualcomm quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB RAM. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is still capable of handling the apps released nowadays but Nexus 4’s hardware is one of the best by today’s standards. I am not comparing the LG Nexus 4 with the iPhone 5 as the old Nexus phone is still good enough to compete with the latest iPhone.

Both the Nexus devices offer a pure Android experience. However, the LG Nexus 4 will be the first smartphone to offer Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with new and upgraded features. Other notable features are: 8MB rear-camera, 1.3MP front camera, SlimPort-HDMI, Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi and a 2100mAh to power up the device. Where the latest smartphone really shines is its affordable price tag. The Google Nexus 4 will be available in the Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain, UK and US on November 13 for $299 (8GB) and $349(16GB) unlocked version.

The Nexus 10

After the huge success of Nexus 7, Google is ready to enter in the 10-inch tablet market with the Nexus 10. Apple is also ready with the new iPad 4 so let’s see if the Nexus 10 is ready to compete with the pricey iPad 4.

The Nexus 10 is Google’s first 10-inch tablet and is the second tablet in the line of Nexus tablets. As Samsung is the manufacturer behind the Nexus 10, this tablet features a different design to the previous Nexus 7 made by Asus. The iPad 4 and Nexus 10 are not available in the market yet so I am just going to compare the specs of both devices here. The Nexus 10 comes with a complete 10-inch WQXGA screen with 2560×1600 resolution and 300ppi while the iPad 4 features a 9.7-inch IPS LED screen with 2048×1536 resolution and only 264ppi. Both iPad 4 and Nexus 10 have good processor but the Nexus 10 comes with 1.7GHz processor while the processor used in the iPad is only 1.4GHz. Moreover, the Nexus 10 features 2GB RAM instead of 1GB RAM, two NFC chips, a front facing sensor with more MP and still weightsless than the iPad 4.

If you are not worried about your budget, the iPad 4 is available with three different storage options,16GB, 32GB and 64GB with optional 3G. On the other side, Google is only offering Wi-Fi versions at the moment with 16GB and 32GB storage options. The Nexus 10 is available for $399(16GB) and $499(32GB) and the iPad 4 prices start at $499 so the Nexus 10 is clearly the winner here.

3G Nexus 7

After lot of rumors and speculation, the Nexus 7 3G is finally here with bigger storage. And that’s not all; the 16GB ‘Wi-Fi only’ version is now available for only $199 and the 3G 32GB Nexus 7 will be available for $299. People who are not interested to buy the 3G version can look for the Nexus 7 32GB Wi-Fi only version in a range of retailers.
