School registration underway

School registration is currently underway for the 2009-2010 year. If your child is new to the Nettelhorst school district and/or is starting Kindergarten they will need to be registered. Registrating your child prior to the start of the school year on September 8th allows us to appropriately plan for class sizes and staff.

Below is some helpful information….

Summer school office hours are Monday-Friday, 9:30am-1:00pm.

You’ll need to bring the following information to the school your child will be attending:

Your child’s birth certificate to show proof of age
Two documents that confirm proof of residency within the school’s boundaries. This could include a driver’s license, utility bill, rental contract, property deed, etc…

If you’re unsure of the school boundaries, visit the CPS boundry site at schoollocator.cps.k12.il.us. Follow the directions. Click submit. This will bring up a window where you type in your home address and also indicate the type of school you’re looking for, in this case, “elementary”. Next, you can click on “Find Your Home School” (your neighborhood Chicago Public School) or “Find Schools in Your Vicinity”. Whichever category you select, the next screen will pull up the relevant schools. Click on each school to see the boundary lines and make sure your child is within the boundary of the school you select.

Lastly, physical and dental examination as well as immunization requirements are also needed by specific dates during the school year, but are not necessarily required when registering your child. To learn more, please click on the link below

No Janes Place Summer Camp at Nettelhorst this Year

Because of a multitude of maintenance and construction projects at Nettelhorst scheduled to occur over the summer break, Jane’s Place Summer Camp will not take place.

Several camps are still open for registration for the 2009 summer months. Jane’s place is referring parents to the summer camp at RAP (Resurrection Afterschool Program). This camp is offered at Hawthorne school. Information for RAP can be obtained by calling or email the camp directors, Karen Fiore and Diana Delfin at 773-525-0605 or rapkids@gmail.com

Takeda Pharmaceuticals Helps Launch School Science Vision

Takeda Pharmaceuticals has provided funding to support the launch of Nettelhorst Community Group’s Science Vision Campaign. The Science Vision campaign seeks to provide The Nettelhorst School students with an effective and rich science curriculum and experimental space to prepare them for high school and beyond. It will substantially increase opportunities for extracurricular science activities, including enrichment programs and after-school clubs. The project’s renovated lab will provide students with critical resources to excel in science, and prepare them for leadership in facing the world’s challenges in the coming decades.

The donation reflects Takeda’s long-standing committment to community, and its belief that supporting the next generation of innovators means supporting science education. Takeda believes in the power of education for young people and works with numerous organizations to provide scholarships and fellowships in science.

Nate Berkus Associates have agreed to redesign and rebuild the Nettelhorst Community Kitchen. His dream team recently visited our school and generated innovative ideas for their planned transformation of our kitchen. Renovations are scheduled to begin in 2009.

Nettelhorst pre-k students learn the value of giving.

On Wednesday, June 4, 2008, 21, students in Zio Perez’s pre-k class lined up — each with a giant bag of supplies and goodies — and in assembly-line-format, filled colorful mesh backpacks for students in South Africa. Their teacher will distribute the backpacks, along with other supplies, when she and fellow teacher, Megan Whitney (of Audubon School) return to the Masakheni Fox Educare Centre in Khayelitsha Township this July.

The two women will also do some teacher training and oversee the purchase and installation of new plumbing for the one-room school. Then they will travel on to Swaziland, where they will conduct a training program for teachers at Moya Centre, an educational organization for orphans.

The backpack supplies were purchased and donated through a fundraising project the children have been working on for about a month. To date, they’ve raised over $450, primarily from “presentations” they’ve given to each class in their school.
