Existe un momento cada mes de mayo en el que Valladolid deja de ser una ciudad del siglo XXI y se convierte, durante seis días intensos, en el corazón palpitante de la Corona de Castilla. La piedra gótica de la iglesia de San Pablo —una de las fachadas isabelinas más elaboradas de Europa— se eleva sobre un laberinto de cabañas de madera, estandartes en rojo y oro, y el humo aromático de los hornos artesanales. Es el Mercado Medieval de Valladolid, y quien lo visita una vez, regresa el año siguiente.

No se trata de un evento improvisado ni de un mercadillo de fin de semana. Organizado por la Federación de Organizaciones Artesanas de Castilla y León (FOACAL) en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de Valladolid, el Mercado Castellano celebra en 2026 una nueva edición con cerca de cien artesanos y elaboradores procedentes de toda España, reunidos en el entorno monumental que durante el siglo XV fue testigo del matrimonio de Fernando e Isabel y la consolidación de un reino.

La Plaza Federico Wattenberg, a escasos metros del mercado, se transforma durante los seis días en un taller medieval para niños. Hasta seis actividades participativas gratuitas enseñan a los más pequeños a modelar arcilla, bordar, pintar sobre vidrio, trabajar el papel, practicar la papiroflexia y manejar el torno de alfarería. Las atracciones ecológicas —un tiovivo y una noria— completan una zona en la que la diversión no necesita pantalla.

Cada tarde del mercado, uno de los cinco grandes grupos de danzas folclóricas de Valladolid actúa gratuitamente. Pilarica, Besana, Mies y Barro, La Trébede y Ribera del Pisuerga representan distintas tradiciones coreográficas y musicales de la región, desde las jotas más vivas hasta las mudanzas más solemnes.
