Universae Ecclesiae - Instruction on Summorum Pontificum

For those unaware the Holy See, specifically, the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei has issued the long awaited instruction on Summorum Pontificum entitled Universae Ecclesiae. The most thorough going analysis is provided by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf at wdtprs.com. Go HERE to read.

Bishop Athanasius Schneider on Communion in the Hand

His Excellency Athanasius Schneider is a holy and courageous Bishop of the Diocese of Karaganda Kazakhstan. He has been outspoken in calling for a return to receiving holy Communion kneeling and on the tongue. His book, Dominus Est, was recently translated into English.

Inaugural Meeting - Latin Mass Society of Beaumont

It seems an advantageous time to begin holding regular meetings. We are thinking about once a month should do - the 1st Sunday of each month at 5pm, in fact. Since we have a diocesan priest learning the Traditional Latin Mass, it is high time we begin working to accomplish the many necessary tasks.

The FSSP has recently released a Vocation video. It is excellent, showing the wonderful formation that priests are receiving at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, Nebraska. The press release is below:

DENTON, Nebraska – 30 August 2010 – The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter is pleased to announce the completion of a 28 minute DVD entitled “To God Who Giveth Joy To My Youth.”
The title, taken from the opening words of Mass in the Extraordinary Form, embodies the essential goal of priestly formation in the Fraternity of Saint Peter. This new video explores in particular the work of priestly formation in the Fraternity's English-speaking seminary in Denton, Nebraska.
The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter presents through this DVD an introduction helpful for generous young men discerning a priestly vocation. At the same time, the film will provide everyone with a thorough portrait of daily life at the seminary.
In the Church, the members of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter have the fundamental charism of sanctifying themselves through the faithful celebration of Holy Mass and the Sacraments in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. At the same time, they offer to souls the fruits of the graces of their vocation by making the liturgy in the Extraordinary Form available to all Catholics. Throughout the seminary's intensive seven year program, each of the various elements and stages of formation has as its purpose the formation of priests whose union with God is pursued through the traditional liturgy.

The link below is a useful directory for finding Traditonal Latin Masses throughout the U.S. and Canada. Some may be interested in finding a TLM when on vacation or traveling for business.

Directory - Traditional Latin Mass

According to the aforementioned directory, there are Traditional Latin Masses in over 180 dioceses in the U.S. & Canada. In Texas there are weekly TLM's in 10 of the 15 dioceses; though it should be mentioned that, unfortunately, the Masses are usually at inconvenient times.

We look forward to the day when the Diocese of Beaumont can be added to the list.

The petition campaign has begun in earnest. Over the coming weeks we will be gathering signatures as a way of demonstrating the level of support that exists within the Diocese of Beaumont for the Traditional Latin Mass. Please contact us if you'd like to support the petition - it reads as follows:

"We the undersigned, practicing Catholics residing in the Diocese of Beaumont, Texas, in keeping with the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI’s motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, request to have the Mass of Blessed John XXIII offered at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica. We request that this extraordinary form of the Mass be offered on Sundays and feast days. We would also like to request the appointment of a chaplain for the extraordinary form of the Mass. Our ultimate goal is the celebration of a Missa Cantata (sung Mass) on Sundays and holy days, and by our signatures we commit to assisting at such celebrations on a regular basis, should they be offered."

Cardinal Canizares Llovera, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, celebrated the Extraordinary Form of the Mass today on the Feast of All Saints. He celebrated Holy Mass at the FSSP's personal parish in Rome, Santissima Trinita dei Pellegrini. We have provided a few pictures of the Mass by way of our friend John Sonnen. For all priests and seminarians in the Diocese of Beaumont, and throughout the world, we cannot recommend highly enough obtaining the training video for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter along with EWTN produced the video as an aid for all priests in learning to offer the Extraordinary Form. It also contains excellent commentaries from Fr. Goodwin and Fr. Berg. Any priests or seminarians who are interested may obtain a free copy by contacting the Fraternity at fsspdvd.com.

Cardinal de Hoyos: The Mass is for all‏

This interview was conducted in late 2008. Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos was the President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei until he retired this year. The PCED is responsible for the implementation of the Holy Father's motu proprio Summorum Pontificum. Therefore, what His Eminence says regarding the TLM is not merely another opinion of a cleric, but has authority. Listen carefully where His Eminence states that the Holy Father wants the Traditional Latin Mass made available in all parishes, even where the faithful do not request it, since it is a part of their Catholic heritage.

This is certainly food for thought, no?

Why do we need a Latin Mass Society in Beaumont? An intro to Summorum Pontificum

You may be wondering - Are people even interested in the Latin Mass in the Diocese of Beaumont? Do we really need a Latin Mass Society? And, wasn't that "Old Mass" done away with a long time ago? The answer to these questions, in short, is Yes, Yes, and No.

It is our experience, gained by speaking with various people throughout the Diocese, that a large number are either interested in learning more about the Traditional Latin Mass or definitely want it offered within the Diocese. In fact, the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) found that Catholics with an opinion favor by a 2 to 1 margin making the Traditional Latin Mass available to those who prefer it. The problem, we have learned, is one of representation. These Catholics do not have a voice. There is no one in a position of leadership willing to speak for them. The Latin Mass Society of Beaumont seeks to provide a voice for these Catholics.

"But, I thought the 'old Mass' was done away with, forbidden, disallowed." The answer to this question is that it was never lawfully forbidden or disallowed. The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI issued an Apostolic Letter titled Summorum Pontificum on July, 7th 2007. In article 1 he states:

" The Roman Missal promulgated by Paul VI is the ordinary expression of the 'Lex orandi' (Law of prayer) of the Catholic Church of the Latin rite. Nonetheless, the Roman Missal promulgated by St. Pius V and reissued by Bl. John XXIII is to be considered as an extraordinary expression of that same 'Lex orandi,' and must be given due honour for its venerable and ancient usage. These two expressions of the Church's Lex orandi will in no way lead to a division in the Church's 'Lex credendi' (Law of belief). They are, in fact two usages of the one Roman rite. It is, therefore, permissible to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962 and never abrogated, as an extraordinary form of the Liturgy of the Church."

The Holy Father very clearly defines the Traditional Latin Mass as the "Extraordinary Form of the Mass" saying that they are "two usages of the one Roman rite". By doing so the Holy Father allows each Roman Catholic priest to celebrate the Ordinary or Extraordinary (Traditional Latin Mass) form of the Mass whenever he chooses. Summorum Pontificum states further:

"...each Catholic priest of the Latin rite, whether secular or regular, may use the Roman Missal published by Bl. Pope John XXIII in 1962, or the Roman Missal promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1970, and may do so on any day with the exception of the Easter Triduum. For such celebrations, with either one Missal or the other, the priest has no need for permission from the Apostolic See or from his Ordinary." [i.e. Bishop]

The Holy Father has clearly stated that every Roman Catholic priest may celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass without the approval of the Bishop. Since the TLM is defined as the Extraordinary Form of Mass, every Roman Catholic priest may offer it by virtue of his being a priest. It is our hope at the Society that every priest in the Diocese will learn of this and become receptive to the wishes of many of the faithful.
