Asch’s conformity experiment goes something like this:

Which of the lines A, B, and C is the same size as the line X?

Imagine you’re seated alongside a number of other people looking at the diagram not knowing they’re all confederates of the experimenter. Everyone else in the room, one after another, claims line C is the same as line X. You’re seated next-to-last. What’s the percentage of people, that when placed in the same situation, will say “C” - and give a wrong answer but one that’s consentient with everyone else? What do you think the percentage would be?

75% of people in Asch’s experiment give a “conforming” answer at least once. 33% of people conformed more than 50% of the time.

Post experiment surveys found that although most people claimed not to believe in their conforming answers, some said that they thought the conforming option was the correct one.

Asch was disturbed by these results:

“That we have found the tendency to conformity in our society so strong… is a matter of concern. It raises questions about our ways of education and about the values that guide our conduct.”

In such case, the effect of your defiance, as long as your answer differs from the incorrect answer of everyone else, will be reduction in conformity down to 5-10%. Yet none of the others will think their nonconformity was influenced or enabled by you.

I’m not self aware of the motives for my conformity or dissent and don’t ever anticipate a strategy I’d employ if faced with unanimous opposition. So the fear of dissent prevents me from improvement but not every dissent will be an improvement. Individualism for the sake of being different is not necessary. If i can find enough courage to dissent ONLY when I see a good reasons, I will have enough conflict to last a lifetime.

Aphorism & Cynicism

Why are aphorisms cynical more often than books are for instance?
