Did it mean that if I thought the (remember, thinking about a bad action is the same as doing it in the eyes of the Lord) wrong way that I'd be damned forever, without any way to erase the sin? If I thought &lt;i&gt;God the Father could go screw Himself&lt;/i&gt; I could eventually be forgiven, but if I thought &lt;i&gt;The Holy Spirit should go sodomize Himself until the 2nd Coming&lt;/i&gt;, does that mean I'm damned?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Damnit! The FFRF had demanded that the iron age code of good behavior be removed.&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;Among&amp;nbsp;the uproar from local salt-of-the-earth, the school board agreed that the Commandments did need to come down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, certain officials worked tirelessly behind the scenes to come up with a compromise decision: ALL 613 Commandments (Mitzvot) will be proudly displayed in every classroom.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At first the small community rejoiced at the "victory." Once the new plaques were set up, a more sober realization took place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: x-large;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Is that really in the Bible?"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Little Bobby, age 9, rubbed his eyes and gazed at this Commandment:&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.&lt;a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus+21%3A20-21&amp;amp;version=NIV" target="_blank"&gt; Exodus 21:20-21&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Is Jesus telling people they can own and hit people?" he asked his teacher.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Oh, that's the Old Testament. God said it was OK to hit slaves, but Jesus never would." his teacher replied.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Isn't Jesus God? Isn't Jesus and God one?" the precocious 3rd grader retorted. "Why would Jesus say it was OK to hit someone and then say it isn't right to do it later? Is it OK for me to hit Jimmy before lunch, but after lunch it isn't OK? That doesn't seem right"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Budding biblical literacy and skepticism swept through Muldrow's students.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"That shit's not right," stated 5th grader Keenan Brown, the only minority student in his class, as he looked at this Mitzvot:&amp;nbsp;Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.&amp;nbsp;&lt;sup class="versenum" style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.75em; font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/sup&gt;You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.&lt;span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus+25%3A44-46&amp;amp;version=NIV" target="_blank"&gt;Leviticus 25: 44-46&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Residents quickly opened up their Bibles in vain hope that the school had somehow mistranslated the word of God. They quickly learned that they didn't know the Bible, except for the few verses that they were spoon fed by their local ministers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Local holy man, Reverend William Fabulist, was consulted, and it was decided to hold a full question and answer session in the high school auditorium about questionable verses in the Bible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I had really high hopes for the meeting," stated the minister.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: x-large;"&gt;Apocalypse Now&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: x-large;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;The auditorium was packed with students and concerned parents. Reverend Fabulist started answering questions, and the whole situation quickly degenerated into chaos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"My&amp;nbsp;thirteen&amp;nbsp;year-old daughter came home crying the other day. She said that Jesus would want here to marry a rapist? I looked up &lt;a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+22%3A28-29&amp;amp;version=NIV" target="_blank"&gt;Deuteronomy 22:22: 28-29 &lt;/a&gt;and she is right! Now she doesn't want to leave the house." stated Thomas Jones.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Um, that was the Old Testament; it doesn't really matter," replied the minister.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"You just quoted the Old Testament in church last Sunday about gay marriage!" yelled the outraged father.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I'm trying to raise two girls. I was doing a good job until they got the idea in their head that they are &lt;u style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"&gt;unclean&lt;/u&gt;&amp;nbsp;during their period, and that they&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt; and&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;their clothes can't be touched. I asked them where they got that kind of crazy idea. And one of the things creationists have worked out is that if you're exposed to secular culture (ie reality) you won't be a creationist for very long. Every effort must be made to cocoon you from two hateful facts:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) There are non-Christian activities which are really fun&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2) There's a lot of evidence which makes believing in Noah's Ark quite difficult.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Creationist rock music was a genius way to protect the young me from both. It sounded good enough to stop me pestering my mum for Bon Jovi albums, and it took the lyrical opportunity to tell me that everyone who believed in evolution was a monkey. While secular bands were experimenting with the concoctions of pharmacists, Christian rock bands were denying science.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Looking back, these were some of the greatest moments in creationist rock.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: large;"&gt;Nailed, "Life" (1996)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The reviewers compared Nailed to Alice in Chains. This worked for me, because I was curious about AIC but would never be allowed to listen to them. Listening to Nailed allowed me to imagine I knew what Alice in Chains sounded like without risking my immortal soul.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first song's lyrics are simply majestic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I look and I wonder, a small baby child&lt;br /&gt;Where do we come from? Something in the wild?&lt;br /&gt;Looked in a school book, they said a monkey&lt;br /&gt;But I think you reached down and breathed life into me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This was a pretty good start. But the chorus heralded one of the finest couplets in the entire Christian rock ouvre:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GOD!!!!!!!!!! I believe in you.&lt;br /&gt;GOD!!!!!!!!!! Evangelical discourse on this subject has not really moved on in the intervening quarter century. You might wonder if offering kids some practical help rather than telling them to pray for answers could make a difference. The city council voted 8-1 in favor of what is being heralded as &lt;i&gt;Our Children, Our Community&lt;/i&gt; city&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/i&gt;ordinance. The ordinance utilizes a neighborhood watch model where the city is divided into zones. Each zone has one Catholic church in it. The goal of these&amp;nbsp;committees&amp;nbsp;is to prevent priestly indiscretions with children and guarantee that if any do&amp;nbsp;occur,&amp;nbsp; then the police and proper social service agencies are immediately notified.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The latest incident with &lt;a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/08/archbishop-roberto-gonzalez-nieves-puerto-rico-catholics-support_n_3238515.html?utm_hp_ref=religion" target="_blank"&gt;Roberto Nieves, the Archbishop of Puerto Rico,&lt;/a&gt; really brought &lt;i&gt;Our Children, Our Communities&lt;/i&gt; to a vote," stated Councilman Anthony Drew. "The Archbishop has some serious charges against him. Considering the history of the Church protecting predators, we thought it was prudent that an inter-path group monitor our local churches."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68/Neighborhood_Map_of_Cambridge,_MA.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="243" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68/Neighborhood_Map_of_Cambridge,_MA.png" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;The councilman quickly added that each committee will not only reflect the makeup of the local community, but also include those who are not Catholic. Each five person team is mandated to include three&amp;nbsp;individuals&amp;nbsp;who are either Jewish, Muslim, or agnostic/atheist (thus inter-path and not interfaith). If a local &amp;nbsp;non-Catholic volunteer can't be found, then a volunteer from another area will be brought in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These neighborhood watches will attend church services, talk to&amp;nbsp;parishioners, and review documents such as emails and personnel files.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, not everyone is pleased. Local priest, Father Manuel Ortiz, decries the ordinance as an assault on the religious rights of&amp;nbsp;Catholics. "The Church has always been under attack in this demographically Catholic majority city. MIT and Harvard University have a deleterious effect on the faith of the everyday people who depend on the Mother Church for guidance and solace. Remember: Priests don't rape children. Pedophiles who happen to be priests rape children."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In response the Cambridge City Council has reiterated that &lt;i&gt;Our Children, Our Communities &lt;/i&gt;does not prevent any Catholic from going to church or engaging in any legal faith-based activity. Many times the person attempting the apology simply digs his or herself into a deeper hole by mouthing the cliche&amp;nbsp;&lt;b style="font-style: italic;"&gt;I'm sorry that your feelings are hurt&lt;/b&gt;. The implied message, of course, is that the person making the apology did nothing wrong, and that the offended party is simply an oversensitive crybaby.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Insight is rare. Our species has a highly developed series of strategies to protect our fragile sense of how we see ourselves in the world.&amp;nbsp;We project our faults onto others, as well as not realistically gauging how we come across to strangers &lt;i&gt;and&lt;/i&gt; those closest to us. I find it comforting to see an apology done right, especially on the internet where hurt feelings can oftentimes spiral out of control.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;But what mad this &lt;i&gt;I'm sorry &lt;/i&gt;so good?&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;First, it starts off with a basic,&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt; Hey, I screwed up.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;I recently explained that I was going to repost some old content from my Posterous account that I had salvaged as they were discounting their service. Unfortunately, my first such post was a disaster, and I owe Matt Dillahunty an apology for it.&lt;/blockquote&gt;I always start off my own apologies with a version of, &lt;b&gt;I fucked up&lt;/b&gt;. It's a good way get the process going. An&amp;nbsp;acknowledgement like that typically makes the other person feel better, and makes the rest of the apology go easier.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Second, there is an unpacking of &lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;How I screwed up&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;Nearly a year ago, Matt had commented on his Facebook page that he was going to block anyone who regarded the Elevatorgate incident as an overreaction. A &lt;a href="http://twitpic.com/afl2ti"&gt;screenshot&lt;/a&gt; of this comment was picked up and shared on Twitpic. I posted this screenshot and a snarky comment about litmus tests on Posterous. Again, this all happened nearly a year ago.&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;Because I was planning to revisit the issue of litmus tests to determine membership in the secular community in the future, I selected this old Posterous post as the first to repost here. I &lt;a href="http://www.atheistrev.com/2013/05/a-litmus-test-for-secular-community.html"&gt;reposted it&lt;/a&gt; yesterday with a poorly-worded introduction which I thought explained that this was a repost from my now defunct Posterous account.&lt;/blockquote&gt;Note: A description should not be veiled as a justification. It's not a &lt;i&gt;You were a dickhead, so this why I did it.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;Third, there is the &lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Why what I did was wrong&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt; part.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;Based on the comments&amp;nbsp;I received on this post, nearly all of which were critical, it was apparent that I had not been sufficiently clear that this was an old post or why I was bothering to repost it at all. In other words, I screwed up. What Matt pointed out was that he had changed his mind about the mass blocking soon after leaving the Facebook comment in question. Because I had not been following him then, I was unaware of this reversal. So when I reposted this old post, it had the effect of making it look like Matt was doing something he wasn't.&lt;/blockquote&gt;What I like about this is that there is confirmation of screwing up in the middle of the paragraph. It's not a&amp;nbsp;gratuitous,&amp;nbsp;grovelling statement -- just saying how it is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fourth, &lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;What I'm doing to rectify the problem.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;After hearing from Matt, I wrote an addendum to the post where I attempted to clarify this. But I'm not sure that is really adequate. Therefore, I am deleting the post because I worry that it is misleading and issuing the apology that follows to Matt.&lt;/blockquote&gt;And lastly, &lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Apology and summation.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;Matt, I am sorry. I really screwed up here, and I see now how reposting an old post along these lines looked like nothing more than an attempt to stir up drama unnecessarily. While that was not my intent, I understand that it must have looked that way. My decision to post this without first attempting to learn what might have changed since the original post was a poor one, and I regret it. I have deleted the offending post, and I am clear that I should not have reposted it at all. The godless flocked to the Pennsylvania Convention Center to hear prominent academics, bloggers, and the mentally ill speak on how they are ruining &amp;nbsp;the secular cause in America.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"This really is a matter of &lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Build it and they will come&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;," stated conference organizer, Andrew Canard. "This was only a dream a year ago. There was no doubt in my mind that individual atheists were doing their best to undermine the fight against religious fundamentalism in America. However, we really needed this conference to put the stake in the heart, so to speak, of godlessness as a social movement."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Pennsylvania Convention Center offered an ideal place for the thousands of anti-activists to meet. The one million square feet of available retail space allowed authors to parade their best selling books like &amp;nbsp;&lt;b&gt;Don't Call Your Legislator, It's a Waste of Time!, Apathy is Your Ally, &lt;/b&gt;and the&lt;b&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/b&gt;all time best seller &lt;b&gt;If You Don't Like Another Atheist, Go on Twitter and Act Like a Psychotic Twelve&amp;nbsp;Year Old&lt;/b&gt;. "I got two copies of the Twitter book -- one for me and one for my buddy who's really into talking smack anonymously online," said one convention goer who refused to state his name.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Spirits were high as seminars were packed to the max. Popular writer of the blog &lt;b&gt;Skeptically Rambling&lt;/b&gt;, Jonathan Adams, gave a moving talk titled: &lt;i style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Leftfielding, How to Derail Atheist Meetups by Saying Irrelevant but Nerdy Facts&lt;/i&gt;. Mr Adams issued forth interesting points on a small French hamlet during the Hundred Years War &amp;nbsp;for 90 minutes. A lengthy question and answer period ensued on topics that had nothing to do with atheism or the Hundred Years War. The most popular seminar, however, was held by Richard Galley, PhD, titled &lt;b&gt;You Don't Agree With Me? You Suck! &lt;/b&gt;The professor spent two hours detailing the nuances of how much people suck who don't find his particular psychiatric diagnosis agreeable.&lt;br /&gt;The crowd ate it impassioned lines like, "Would a crazy person be calling other people crazy? Of course not!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The conference ended with Andrew Canard's speech detailing the necessity of presenting the worst possible ad campaigns to the public and never ever doing any local godless organizing. "Look, nobody likes doing the grunt work of community organizing. Don't do it. Tell other people not to do it. Make some really bad ads to demoralize the community. Above all be a dick to everyone. All. The. It was done by her husband, and didn't require any glue or tape. I don't know if you can tell by the photos, but there is an outer as well as an inner shell. Another interesting tidbit is that he used a book on the Louvre as material.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It really made an impression on me. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Maybe he would make one for you? Fast forward to 2013, and we're back to the same sad place because their 8 month old son Brandon is dead for the same faith- based reason.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;On Monday, a different judge said that it did happen again, that the Schaibles - members of a Juniata Park church that shuns medical care - admitted to police that they once again chose prayer over medicine for a dying child.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;This time, the little boy's name was Brandon. He was 8 months old when he died in his home Thursday after days of labored breathing, fitful sleep, crying, and diarrhea, a prosecutor said.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;"When you were asked by police why you didn't call a doctor, you both responded, separately, with the same answer," Common Pleas Court Judge Benjamin Lerner said during a probation-violation hearing, referring to sealed statements the couple made to police.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;"Because we believe God wants us to ask him for healing," Lerner quoted from the statements. "Our religion tells us not to call a doctor."&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course not. That would make sense.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Schaibles have not been charged in the infant's death. Police and prosecutors said they were awaiting a medical examiner's report before deciding whether they would be charged. That finding could take two to four weeks, said Assistant Prosecutor Joanne Pescatore.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;But at Monday's hearing, Lerner said there was evidence the Rhawnhurst couple had "knowingly, intentionally, callously, and hypocritically" violated the most important condition of their probation: getting help for an ailing child.&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And you read that correctly, the couple received &amp;nbsp;probation (2 whole years) for killing a child the &lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;first&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt; time. This time it's serious because they broker their parole.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why is faith-based child abuse legal in Pennsylvania (the state the family lives in)?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Apparently, Pennsylvania is a fucked up place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law includes a religious exemption for instances in which parents neglect children's medical needs because of religious beliefs. It doesn't seem that I will be going in for my shift at 3 pm today, but I have chatted with my coworker at the residence. She has decided it would be a poor idea to outside to get the morning newspaper.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Good call under the circumstances.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've been on social media commenting on the craziness for a few hours, and I have a few bits I want to &amp;nbsp;share. The suspect was arrested last night approximately a mile and a half from where I work. As I was driving in last night (well after his arrest) I saw a few cars with people beeping and waving flags in celebration. The reporter mentioned the bombing and then &amp;nbsp;the station went back to its regular programming (an odd choice under the circumstances). I switched over to a Boston sports channel and heard the initial gruesome details. It was eerily similar to 9/11 when I initially heard about those attacks via the Howard Stern Show, and for a few minutes he was the only one covering the story.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="noline"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="noline"&gt;Here is the official statement from Boston Atheists and the Secular Coalition for Massachusetts concerning the incident.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="noline"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="noline"&gt;We know that we’re not alone among atheists and other secular people in wanting to show sympathy and support in response to today’s tragedy. Although prayer isn’t for us an option, we are ready to help by working with the Red Cross and other emergency and community organizations in any way possible.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="noline"&gt;Leaders of local secular organizations like the Boston Atheists and the Secular Coalition for Massachusetts have been diligently monitoring communications for any opportunity to respond constructively to the tragic events of the day. We may have a different religious perspective, but on days like today, those differences pale in comparison to what brings us all together as members of the community.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left" class="noline"&gt;Our thanks go to the first responders and other support staff who came to the aid of the victims in Copley Square today, and who have been working since then to protect our safety. This individual will be able to use the power of photosynthesis -- up until now an ability limited only to plants -- and gather all the energy he or she requires by standing in the sun. Mr Khannard immediately saw the potential benefits for Jains everywhere. Jains understand that committing even the smallest act of violence pollutes their karma and can effect what they will be in the next life. "What the GPP has done is nothing short of saving millions of souls from&amp;nbsp;unnecessary misery in the next life, as well as giving people a pleasant green hue," said Dr. Khannard.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is understood by the GPP scientific team that even photosynthetic Jains will still encounter problems such as drinking microorganisms&amp;nbsp;inadvertently, as well as not getting sufficient vitamin and minerals through sunlight alone. However&amp;nbsp;a new line of filtered nutrition water will soon be out to meet those concerns.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are some who are wary of the new scientific achievement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Executives at the Food Network have taken a wary stance at the GPP. While it is understood that people eat not simply to meet their dietary needs (the obesity epidemic is evidence of that), there is concern that a world of green people will take a bite out of the food industry. Because that's what real religious lunatics do.
