I always blamed my dishwasher for the poor performance we were getting, but this OxiClean product blew me away!

Before, I had to go behind my husband and make sure every speck of food was removed from dishes, or the dishes would not come out clean. I've been using Cascade Complete Pacs which claim no pre-rinsing is needed, but I always had to clean the dishes before loading in the dishwasher. Not with OxiClean! I tested several loads and didn't even rinse the dishes before loading the dishwasher! Every single item came out sparkling clean! My dishes are cleaner than they have ever been, and I'm definitely sold on the new product despite it's higher cost. (Priced on Amazon at 0.48 per ounce vs. Cascade Complete Pacs for 0.31 per ounce)
Outdated makeup and unwashed makeup applicators can cause minor skin irritations, contribute to blemish break-outs, and more seriously, cause infections.

According to a March 9, 2000 makeup report (revised October 15, 2002) the FDA advised, "Consumers should be aware that makeup expiration dates are simply 'rules of thumb', and that a product's safety may expire long before the expiration date if the product has not been properly stored. Cosmetics that have been improperly stored -- for example, exposed to high temperatures or sunlight, or opened and examined by consumers prior to final sale -- may deteriorate substantially before the expiration date. On the other hand, products stored under ideal conditions may be acceptable long after the expiration date has been reached."
There are no FDA regulations for expiration dates for skincare or cosmetics products in the United States. The European Union has a system known as the PAO, or Period After Opening date. A number followed by M on the product label indicates how many months it should remain safe. For instance, a number 12 followed by an M on the product label indicates that any remaining product should be discarded after 12 months. However, PAO dates are supplied by cosmetics manufacturers, and they are created without guidelines or methodical, substantiated testing.

Without mandated expiration dates for cosmetics and skincare products, the burden lies with the consumer to determine when a product is no longer safe. Some indicators are easy to spot. If the consistency of the product has changed, such as becoming more runny or more clotted, it's a safe bet to discard it. Also, if the product has developed an odor, or looks or feels different, it should be tossed.

Unopened products can last past their supposed expiration date because they haven't been exposed to air, light, or bacteria. Dry products, such as eyeshadows, blushes, and powders, have the longest shelf life because they are not conducive to growing bacteria. Liquids, such as foundations, mascaras, and skincare regimens, have a considerably shorter safe-to-use period.

Here are some guidelines for cleaning out that makeup drawer:

Mascara, Liquid Eyeliner, and Self-Sharpening Eyeliner - 3 months. These wet formulas are in a dark environment, which is an invitation for bacteria. In addition, the mascara usually becomes dry and chalky at around 3 months. You'll experience flaking and uneven coating. Never pump the wand in the container; this forces air in and quickly dries the mascara out. (I think this is an outdated practice, but I remember my sister and me doing it when we were teenagers!! A lot!!) Instead, twist the brush around the inside of the container to gather product from the container walls and move it in a circular motion at the bottleneck to remove excess solution. Liquid eyeliners should be handled in the same manner. Self-sharpening eyeliner can be cleaned with an alcohol swab after each use to prolong its life.

Pencil Eyeliner & Lipliner - 2 years. A true pencil eyeliner or lipliner is renewed each time it is sharpened.

Concealer - 3 months to 12 months. Liquid concealers with a wand applicator should be tossed on the same schedule as mascara. Concealer sticks, twist-ups, and containers can last up to 12 months if an applicator is used to apply. Using fingers increases the odds of bacterial growth. At the very least, if you use your fingers to apply sticks, twist-ups, and containers, swipe the product with an alcohol swab after each use.

Foundation & Face Powder - 6 months to 2 years. Liquid foundations are susceptible to bacterial growth, especially if they are in a jar instead of a tube. Dipping into a jar or placing fingers over the top of a bottle container can possibly introduce bacteria from your fingers or hands. A tube helps eliminate the exposure to bacteria from your hands. Powder foundations can last up to 2 years, although they can become hard and chalky on the top layer from exposure to pouf or sponge applicators, which transfer oils from your skin. If this happens, the top cakey layer can be scraped off to expose the fresher consistency underneath. Face powders, whether pressed or loose, can last up to 2 years. Follow the same guidelines for powder foundations.

Eyeshadow - 6 months to 2 years. Creme shadows, with their moist consistency, can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Double dipping a brush or applicator can introduce and push bacteria into the product. The risk can be reduced by swiping the top layer off of the container with an alcohol swab. Prepare to toss after 6 months if not disinfected with an alcohol swab. Powder shadows can last up to 2 years but face the same limited shelf life as powder foundations. Scraping the top layer or transferring to a more airtight container can prolong their life.

Lipstick & Gloss - up to 2 years. Lip gloss' liquid formulation, like any other liquids, can be conducive to bacteria growth. Gloss and lipstick tend to dry out with age, where they no longer look creamy. Long-wearing lipsticks may not last as long as others; their ingredients may change consistency more quickly than regular formulas.

Moisturizers, Cleansers, Tonics, & Serums - 6 months to 1 year. These products should be regarded the same as other cosmetics. Liquids are more prone to bacteria if not used, applied, or stored properly.

Items labeled as 'All-Natural' - These products do not contain preservatives and should be used or tossed within 6 months.

A few other tips:

Clean makeup applicators, sponges, and brushes in a soapy wash at least once every couple of months.

Wash your hands before and after using products.

Products packaged in jars invite bacteria growth. Be sure to use clean hands or a clean applicator to get product.

Never re-use eye products after or during an eye infection like pink-eye. Toss them to prevent re-infection.

Tighten caps and lids after each use.

Store products away from heat and sunlight, in a drawer or cabinet.

Don't share products with others. Make sure makeup application consultants use clean applicators for each product / use.

Note: You can use a Sharpie to write the opened date on your cosmetics and skincare products. You can use a label or write directly on the product. Or you can use http://www.beautyalert.biz/ that offers labels to place on your products.

Note: The BeautiControl products that I use in Stress Management Workshops and Spa Experiences are tested and formulated to ensure a minimum of 3 years life if unopened. After a product is opened the shelf life varies due to storage, use, and application.

A similar situation occurred in 2010 right before I left my job on disability: short-term memory loss and a general feeling of incompetence. This year the Fibro Fog was the worst it's been in 20-plus years of having Fibromyalgia.

Bills didn't get paid, things didn't get done, and some days ended in tears just because I was so sad at the loss of competent me! Where did she go? And would I be like this for the rest of my life?

I've been an over-achiever for all my life, memorizing numbers, filing things away, knowing right where anything was that I needed.

It's very, very hard to accept that I'm not that person anymore.

I did come out of the fog, thankfully before I went insane because of it!

Some of the effects of it, however, are still sharp in my mind...and what sense does that make?! Can't remember if I paid the electric bill, but I can remember how awful I felt contemplating letting the "me" I knew go.

I would tell Scotty I paid a bill, fully believing that I had, and we'd get stuck the next week with the service guy from the electric company in the driveway, here to cut off the electricity right that minute! I was blessed that my Daddy was available for my phone call and let me use his account to pay on the spot, preventing a forced power outage that I could have avoided.

Scotty began double-checking me on everything! And I mean everything! I've handled the bills since we got together over five years ago, and it reminded me of micro-management I experienced at my job before I left. Although, I WAS competent then, and certainly wasn't when he was following up with me!

It frustrated me to no end for him to ask me things countless times! I was mad about it, really mad, while at the same time, understanding WHY he was asking me. I wasn't mad at him; I was mad at the position my faulty Fibro brain had put me in, and I didn't want to be the incompetent, forgetful girl that I had become.

I cried many days, which is another thing that is really foreign to me, by the way. I cried for the loss of the competent me, and for the possibility that this would be the new me, a foreigner to myself.

Fibromyalgia robs us of the me-ness that we are so familiar with. I've never been a perfect person by any means, but the realization that my mind might join my body in betrayal is a serious issue for me, and something that I am forced to accept when in a fog period.

I'm thankful for the glass half-full optimism that I've always intrinsically had. It's gotten me through everything in my life up to this point! And I'm sure it will continue, as I have to believe that Fibromyalgia is incapable of stealing at least that from me!

We're Criminals! 11/18/09

It's been a while since I posted here, and I must tell you that knowing me -- I will revert back and forth to current events to past events --it's just the way I remember them and keep them in perspective in my head. One important note: although there are many times that I actually post the humorous thoughts after the fact, those ideas are actually going through my head at the time.
I really mean it when I say that I saw "the funny" when something happened... sometimes it may take me some time to put it in verbal perspective that someone else could handle... laughter is my out, my sanity-keeper.
Having said that -- we are fortunate that we have already received the keys to our home that arrived on 11/7/09. (shhh! you aren't supossed to receive the keys until you've closed on the loan and signed all the thousands of things you have to sign!) We've been walking through with family & friends, showing them all the neat stuff we changed and customized just for us. The two sides of the house got joined last weekend, and WOW! things seemed really BIG after that.
One thing: we had the most fun tonight --- Scotty & Willie finished connecting the sewer & water; electricity was connected by Terry over the weekend....
We are rebels, we... So we gathered up our robes, our slippers, our beverages, our soap, towels, and most importantly: a heater that Scotty plugged in about an hour ago.
I haven't had a bath in a year. Granted, we are so fortunate to have co-workers who will make sure we have a roof over our heads. I don't know what we would have done without Pat Butler...But let me tell you -- that bath was the bomb! Scotty took a shower in our shower area that we don't like -- re-bath to the rescue soon. We will have that sheetrock damaged in no time... One shower tonight, and the wall was already wet!
We actually danced a jig around the tub -- and around the shower -- we are indeed blessed. More dancing to come as we actually move in--- right now we are just so happy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

10/24/08 Continued...

We were lucky, very lucky, in hindsight. It really didn't feel that way right off. Losing Baby was the hardest part. We learned very quickly that things are just that: things. Some of those things are irreplaceable, and some of those things have unexplainable sentimental value, and despite all the intangible thoughts and connections with tangible items, they really are just "things" in the end.

The firefighters saved some of our pictures, and my artwork from high school, some items from the office, and our fire safe. I was grateful beyond words for the pictures and the artwork. The fire safe is somewhat a different story.

I hope that the volunteer firefighters who responded to our fire never read this! After we had sat in the car for a couple of hours and finally braved our way back down the driveway to the house, it was a surreal experience indeed for a sight-impaired person looking on. The fire had almost been entirely extinguished, but there was still a halo of spark and smoke hanging above the horizon. We had draped a blanket that we found in the car around our shoulders and were stumbling a bit across the terrain.

As we stood about 15 feet from where the deck had once been, one of the firefighters came up to us carrying the fire safe that we had just gotten back from Alice, Scotty's mom, several weeks before. It had been under the master bedroom bed, and I silently wondered about Baby when the firefighter set it down beside us. He said, "Hey folks - we found your fire safe intact in the master bedroom".

Scotty & I somehow had the presence of mind to avoid looking at each other until he walked away. We restrained ourselves for about a minute, then turned our heads to look at each other and burst out laughing. Fire safes are a great thing, IF you actually store something in them! We had not even taken the time to put our important papers in the safe. Our birth certificates were in the computer room, exposed on the desk. My passport, our social security cards, and other important identification documents were either floating around somewhere in the debris of the house or were lost forever.

As we moved around the disaster zone, we left the fire safe sitting where it was. That same firefighter would pick it up and bring it where we were standing and sit it beside us, saying "Here's your fire safe". He was trying to make sure that we had something tangible to hold onto, and we couldn't have cared less about that empty safe! We didn't have the heart to tell him that it was empty. He was doing a fine thing in our minds, trying to reassure us that all was as well as it could be.

We called our friend Terry at about 5:30 am. We figured enough time had passed, and he would already be up getting ready for work. We drove to his house, showered, and settled in to wait. I needed contact lenses before we attempted anything. We called Daddy, and he met us at Terry's with money. I hated to accept it but didn't have much choice. We both needed clothes, and the dogs needed food, and so did we.

I called the eye doctor's office at 8:01 am Friday 10/24/08 to try to get contact lenses. I couldn't function until I could see. They finally called back around 11 am and were gracious enough to provide soft lenses that were as close to my prescription as they could get. I wear gas permeable lenses, but this was great! I could finally see (sort of!). They refused to charge me for the contacts and told me to come back for an exam when we were more settled. This made both of us cry right there in the doctor's office. We are blessed to have such great doctors, staff, and friends.

We headed to Wal-Mart to find clothing and now-necessities. Did you know that there are now-necessities and nearly-now necessities? Well, there are. Clothing was second on the list, after toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, contact lens solution, soap, toothbrushes, a brush, hairspray, styling goo, razors, shaving cream, dental floss, vitamins, ... well, you get the idea.

A word about those Wal-Mart people pictures circulating the internet next time...

Going back in time a bit...

October 24, 2008

I woke with a start. Baby, our 2 1/2 year old Boxer, was laying on my legs making a "chuffing" sound. She was supposed to be on the floor, but, as usual, she had waited until we had fallen to sleep and had silently sneaked into the bed. It was crowded in our double bed: me, Scotty, Roxie the 5 month old Rat Terrier, Little Boy the 7 year old Chihuahua, and now Baby.

I wasn't sure what time it was; I didn't sleep in contact lenses. I knew it was the middle of the night and wasn't sure at first what had caused me to wake up. Baby made another "chuff" noise, and I did what you always do when your dog wakes you in the middle of the night. I said, "Hush, Baby, go back to sleep."

I don't know how long I dozed there with Baby making that weird "chuff" noise. She wasn't panicked or agitated, but as I slowly became more cognizant I realized that she was curious about something. At some point I realized that I was hearing noises on the deck outside.

We were living in a single wide manufactured home. The master bedroom was at one end of the house, with a hall (laundry included) leading to the kitchen / dining area. Scotty had built a very nice 16 x 30 attached covered deck where we spent lots of time. Right now, in the middle of the night, I could hear something on the deck outside.

Baby was notorious for having encounters with local wildlife. She had recently recovered from a snakebite that had seriously affected her health, and there were regular skunk encounters that left her smelling less than attractive. I figured that there was a skunk, a possum, or some such creature on the deck.

I decided to wake Scotty and have him deal with whatever was on the deck. I shook him and forced him awake. I said, "There's something on the deck. Go see what it is but don't open the door all the way; I don't want Baby to have a run-in with whatever's out there".

Scotty got up and stumbled to the door. He turned the knob, cracked the door, and then it was immediately snatched out of his hand.

Flames of fire began licking inside the house at the ceiling as soon as the door opened. He turned his head toward me and yelled, "Rachel!" I stood up and gathered Roxie & Little Boy, each on one hip. Scotty ambled to the kitchen to get the fire extinguisher. By the time he got back to the door with the fire extinguisher I was in the kitchen with Roxie & Little Boy each under an arm and Baby heeled beside me.

I ran to the front door, which we never used, and began unhooking the chains and unlocking the door. Scotty was still at the back door trying to pull the pin on the fire extinguisher. I turned to him and yelled, "Leave it -- go get a cell phone and just leave it!" I did have an advantage on him: I had been awake for some time while he was still in sleep mode.

Scotty looked at the fire extinguisher for a moment then threw it out the door onto the deck. It was engulfed in flames by now. He ran into the bedroom and scooped up both cell phones and his wallet. As he was coming out of the bedroom, one of the windows in the bedroom exploded. He was just at the door in the hall and dove onto the floor, never losing hold of the cell phones or wallet.

I swear that this was not funny when it happened -- laughter was the furthest thing from my mind. After all, we, or at least I, was in panic mode with "GET OUT" the only thing on my mind. In hindsight, it has been particularly funny. Scotty slid like a bowling ball down the hall into the dining table and chairs. The table and chairs slid across the floor into the pantry wall. And amidst all of this, Scotty never let go of the cell phones or his wallet; he was holding them almost like an offering. If we had had a video set up, we would have won $10,000 on America's Funniest Home Videos, but...

When Scotty dove onto the floor I turned from unlatching the front door and ran back across the living room to the kitchen. I was screaming at the top of my lungs, "Get up! Get up! Come on!" At times of crisis I've found that we are not the most coherent of beings and that most of what we say is pared down to basic necessities. Communication becomes a staccato event of phrases and sometimes meaningless patter.

At that moment I meant every single thing I was saying -- I wanted him to get up, and I wanted him to get up NOW! As I had run back across the living room towards Scotty I still had Roxie & Little Boy in each arm. Baby was still heeled with me, but I was panicking and she was following my lead. When I reached Scotty on the dining room floor, Baby was stride for stride with me. When I stopped to yell into his face, she kept going and ran down the hall into the bedroom.

She had to practically run through flames to get there. Her safe place during storms or when she was in trouble was under our bed. I guess she was so panicked by our behavior that she needed her safe place. I started yelling for her, "Baby, come! Baby, come!" She had been to obedience school and surely knew what my words meant.

In the mean time, I helped Scotty to his feet. Don't ask me how -- I still had Roxie & Little Boy each under one arm; I didn't even have an extra hand to extend to him. But I remember actually helping him to his feet and moving us toward the front door. We ran down the steps into the unused front yard and then ran around the end of the house, across the driveway rock to the vehicles.

Scotty had already gotten the keys to my car from his console in his truck and had started it and backed it up. I threw the dogs into the truck and turned toward Scotty in the car. By this time, the pistol had already fired a couple of times. It had been on the night stand on Scotty's side of the bed. He had rolled down the passenger side of the window and yelled at me that he didn't have keys to the truck.

I opened the door and gathered Roxie & Little Boy under each arm again and ran across the rock to the car. I haven't mentioned this yet, but we both sleep nude. We were running around in 40 degree weather with no clothes on and certainly no shoes. We are both tenderfoots and had no recollection of running across rock until the next day when the bottoms of our feet were black and blue.

I made it to the car; Scotty had leaned across and opened the passenger door for me. I somehow managed to close the door with a dog under each arm. I still don't know how I did the things I did with arms and hands that were basically rendered useless by holding dogs.

We were still screaming at this point. I yelled, "Call 911 -- Now!" Scotty dialed at 2:15 am. We drove to the end of the driveway to escape the possibility of the propane tank exploding and to help the firefighters find the address. You can't see our house from the road, and the numbering leaves a bit to be desired. Our address is an odd number, and our neighbor across the street has an odd-numbered address, too, one of the pitfalls of living on a circle.

The volunteer firefighters arrived at 2:35. Twenty minutes seems like a lifetime when you are sitting naked in a car at the end of your driveway with two scared dogs with no glasses or contacts to see what is going on around you. Twenty minutes for volunteer firefighters to respond to a 911 call, get up out of bed, get dressed, make it to the station, get in the truck, make sure it is loaded with water, and arrive at the scene is miraculous.

We discovered a pair of shorts and a long-sleeved T-shirt, along with tennis shoes in Scotty's truck. The fruits of working out at the gym. We discovered a pair of thongs, a pair of sandals, and a towel in the backseat of my car. The fruits of tanning at the salon and boarding the dogs just six days before when we went to Vegas for me to speak at a conference and for us to get married.

In my zeal to protect the dogs I could carry, I had squeezed them so hard that I had actually squeezed the poop out of one of them. I asked Scotty for something to wipe myself with; he laughed and said that we were short on cloth at the moment! I had wrapped the towel around me like a skirt, put on the long-sleeved T-shirt and the sandals. Scotty had utilized the gym shorts and tennis shoes. The only problem I had now was that I couldn't see, and I had dog poop on my leg! I found some wet leaves and played like I was camping or was in colonial times -- I wiped the dog poop off with the dew-encrusted leaves.

We sat in the car at the end of the driveway for a couple of hours. The firefighters came to tell us that they had saved the truck. If we hadn't had keys to the car it would have been damaged. As it was, the Chevy emblem and the front grill on the truck were warped from the heat.

We finally drove back down the driveway to the house, and the fire was mostly out. The firefighters were stomping embers and doing last checks. If you've never experienced a fire, it's unlike anything you've ever imagined. The couch had been thrown out of the living room, the ironing board and office chair had been thrown to the ground as well. The washing machine & dryer were on the ground where the deck had once been, and objects all around the house were on the ground outside the windows now instead of inside where they once had been.

These objects are removed from the structure to remove the possibility of re ignition. As we walked around the house, items were still smoldering on the ground.

Not being able to see is a huge disability. Scotty sleeps in his contacts; he wears extended lenses and can see upon waking. I wear gas permeable lenses and take them out each night. I couldn't see a thing! We were walking around the front yard, it was cold, and we had limited coverage for warmth. Scotty said, "Let me take you back to the car." I was so unfocused that I said, "You can't just put me in the car and leave me out of this!" The whole time Scotty was trying to protect me and make sure that I was safe and warm. It had nothing to do with excluding me from what was going on. I was disoriented for a number of reasons, most of which because I couldn't see, secondly the circumstances in which we found ourselves.

During all this time, I knew that we had lost Baby. Scotty still believed, as he did at the time, that she had run out of the house. As I had been screaming "Baby, come!" he had been constantly telling me that she had run outside. It was the only way he could cope at the time. It broke my heart the whole time I was yelling for her to come and knowing that she was gone.

We were standing in the yard with a blanket that miraculously appeared in the car, and we asked the firefighters to look for Baby underneath the bed. They graciously walked across dangerous joists and placed themselves in danger to find Baby. Six of them took a bed comforter from the guest bedroom and wrapped Baby in it and carried her out as if in a funeral procession. They comforted us by telling us that the heat in the bedroom would have been so high that she would have passed out as soon as she went under the bed, there would have been no oxygen left for her.

It was the most touching thing: these firefighters who didn't know us who respected dogs enough to offer their respect to her, or to us. We never looked at Baby again. Our friends carried her to her grave at Daddy's later that same night.

The investigator who arrived that next day, Friday afternoon, told us that if we had been in the house only five minutes more, we wouldn't have made it out. We've modified our new manufactured home plan to include five exit doors (that's another story -- we're still not living in it yet!)

Baby saved our lives, and we have learned new things since getting married and starting our life together. I'd like to think that she has taught us things that we wouldn't have learned otherwise, and I believe that to be the case. Baby was always laughing... she would be proud of us now.

Wow! I'm really in cyberspace...

So... I decided that I would actually act on my compulsion to write and comment about things that are important to me. I signed up at www.associatedcontent.com and published an article the first day. After reading some of the other articles on the site I wondered if I wanted to be associated with editors who allowed grammatical errors to be posted out there for all to see...

I am proud of my first article. The assigned content was about alternative medicine, and I used my current acupuncture treatments to feed the article. My sister and friends graciously emailed everyone in their address book to increase my page views, all to the tune of a few cents for views. Not that I mind the low pay for untested work. After all, I'm not a professional writer, just someone who likes the written word.

In any case, I hope you enjoy reading my views on whatever. This one's not very funny, but then again, sometimes days aren't funny.

I usually laugh in the face of diversity, hence the title. Sometimes laughter is hard to come by. When it is, I usually work really hard and create fun things to bring the laughter back.

For instance, (I'll make this the short version!@ really!) our house burned down in October 2008. Since then, we have been camping out in a travel trailer, or really, three trailers. We have an 18-wheeler trailer that we bought for storage about a month before the house burned down. We also have a travel trailer borrowed from a friend and a FEMA trailer borrowed from a friend. We actually have a north, west, and south home -- we are rich indeed!

We have shared with friends that we are the epitome of redneck. How is it that you send things to Jeff Foxworthy for inclusion in the "You Might Be A Redneck..." series? For example, you might be a redneck if your hot tub costs more than the three trailers you are currently living out of... That's the first thing we replaced -- we use the hot tub for therapy almost daily.

We are impatiently waiting for the new manufactured home to arrive; we ordered five weeks ago yesterday. I must admit that even though we have created fun activities for the travel trailer, I am more than ready to move into the house! I'll share some of the stupid things we've tried to keep from going crazy in a future post.

In the mean time, thanks for reading, and stay tuned for information about relationships, attending school while working full time, laughter, the great things about dogs, and how to keep your sanity while caring for your attention-starved goat.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rachelfletcher.blogspot.com/2009/09/wow-im-really-in-cyberspace.html' title='Wow!
