This is a new illustration showing the routes taken by the Vikings leaving Norway, Sweden and Denmark on their way to Britain and Ireland. I’ve used mostly muted tones on this picture with just a touch of red on the viking ship sails, the scary sea monster and the rosy cheeks of the viking. He’s not too scary, he might even be a bit smug. My home town, Dublin was visited by the Vikings or Ostmen around 841, where they settled. the name Dublin comes from the Norse Dyflin or “Black Pool”, referring to a dark tidal pool where the River Poddle entered the Liffey at the rear of Dublin Castle.

The “Wild West” is an illustration created for The Looking Glass magazine of children’s literature. I love to draw anything related to the sea or travel.

This is an illustration I did recently for The Looking Glass Magazine. The Looking Glass is a creative writing magazine exclusively for children’s literature and illustrations. The magazine features art work, short stories, novel extracts and poetry from both established and up-and-coming authors and illustrators.

I love pretty much anything to do with the sea, whether it’s swimming in it, kayaking on it, or sailing through it. I could draw sea-related pictures forever and indulged myself with the image for the magazine. It’s a man from the west of Ireland out sailing very late at night in stormy seas in a Galway Hooker. That “hooker” has nothing to do with a lady of the night but in case you’re not familiar with them here’s a description via Wikipedia.

The Galway hooker (Irish: húicéir) is a traditional fishing boat used in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland. The hooker was developed for the strong seas there. It is identified by its sharp, clean entry, bluff bow, marked tumble-home and raked transom. Its sail plan consists of a single mast with a main sail and two foresails. Traditionally, the boat is black (being coated in pitch) and the sails are a dark red-brown

Fruit & Veg ABC now available on the iTunes

My second illustrated ABC ibook is now out and available to download from the iTunes store. It’s a follow up to last year’s Animal ABC iBook.

So this new book covers fruit and vegetables from A to Z. Lots of the usual suspects appear like apples, carrots and a cute strawberry but what about vegetables beginning with V? Or X? Hmmmmmm. As I mentioned, this is an iBook which means it can be viewed on iPhones, iPods and iPads. It’s not available for Android yet. As well as featuring colourful illustrations the iBook also has a button on each page which can be pressed to hear the fruit and vegetable names.

You can see some screengrabs from the book below and you can download a sample for free. You can buy the WHOLE book for only 99cents though which is fabulous value. I am biased of course. I would be really grateful if you could spread the word to your friends with kids who have iDevices.
