Ever Wondered How Much The Olympics Gold Medal Is Really Worth? The Answer Will Surprise You.

The Olympics is a shining, glorious dream for athletes worldwide. Indian athletes are doing pretty well in the Rio Olympics with the Indian hockey team pushing forward into the quarter finals and Dipa Karmakar vaulting into the finals. After years of hard work and grueling grit, one athlete among countless others reach the podium, eyes glistening and proudly holding up the gold medal, but how much is this small golden disc really worth?

If the medal was melted and then evaluated in terms of money, the athletes don't get a lot. Since the Mexican games in 1968, medals are around 6.5 millimeters thick, 65.8 millimeters broad and weigh about 176.5 grams. The London Olympics handed out bigger medals which were about 375 to 400 grams.

But the shiny medal isn't made up entirely of gold. Only about 6 grams are real gold (24 karats) and the rest is made up of sterling silver which is 92.5 grams silver and the rest, copper. With skyrocketing prices of gold (a very real problem in India), a medal would cost about $366 or Rs. 24,467.08 and the London medals would cost about a measly $501 or Rs. 33,491.82.

Wired figured out how much they would cost of they were made of pure gold and it was a whopping $76,000 for a 3.35 pound gold medal which is Rs. 50,80596.20, OMG, I can't even.

Some medals by famous athletes are auctioned off and bring in quite a bit. For example, Jesse Owen's 1936 medal went under the hammer for $1.47 million in 2013. That said, an Olympic medal is way, way more valuable for an athlete even if it was made of solid gold. We are talking years of grueling training and sacrifices made in terms of studies and job alternatives which might affect them later.

Debates will rage on about the medal's real worth, but talkin' money they're worth about 24,000 rupees.

Plot: 25-year old Delhi boy Gaurav Chandna is known as his colony’s very own Aryan Khanna. And why not? After all, he is the movie star’s biggest fan who not only looks like Aryan but can also act and speak like him. His plans to go to Mumbai and personally meet his favorite actor on his birthday go haywire when he just ends up being like any other ‘Fan’ in the crowd. In his bid to get special attention from the star, he ends up hurting Aryan’s colleague and gets jailed- only to realize it was Aryan who informed the police and put him behind the bars. What follows next is how this turns Gaurav into Aryan’s enemy and the mischief he does to take revenge from Khanna in order to get a ‘Sorry’.

Performances: Remember that feeling your mother cooked you your favorite meal after eating hostel food for 4 months? Well, something similar happens when you meet Shah Rukh Khan in this movie (though the duration is not 4 months but 5 years in this case).

He will surprise you as the adorable, energetic and unforgiving ‘Fan’ Gaurav Chandna whose world revolves around his ‘God’ Aryan Khanna. The first half of ‘Fan’ will let you would feel his craze, his heartbreak, and his anger. SRK’s walk, his attitude, his body language will make you question “Is he really 50?” He proves why he still is the King of Bollywood!

And then comes Shah Rukh Khan as Aryan Khanna. If the first half was all about Gaurav, second half is all about Aryan, his ego, his growing insecurities due to situations created by Gaurav and his chase to get hold of his ‘Fan’ and put an end to all his mischiefs. And thankfully we do not see the superstar flare up his nostrils and give a smirk or two in the typical Shah Rukh Khan style- how we have seen him act over the years. He is different, intense and a tad bit arrogant as the self-righteous Aryan Khanna!

Shah Rukh Khan- the actor is back, and this one is yet another mesmerizing performance by him after ‘My Name Is Khan’.

Shriya Pilgaonkar looks gorgeous and is magical every time she appears on-screen. How I wish she had a bigger role. Same goes for Sayani Gupta, who was wonderful in ‘Margarita With A Straw’, but doesn’t have much to do as Aryan’s manager.

Waluscha De Sousa doesn’t have much to do either. Yogendra Tiku and Deepika Amin are good as Gaurav’s parents.

Direction: Now coming to the most debatable aspect of the film- Direction by Maneesh Sharma.

The first-half of ‘Fan’ takes its own time to develop and has its share of entertainment and jokes before the movie takes a serious turn and become all serious and intense throughout the second half. For the entertainment junkies, second half might appear as a boring and messed up one, especially after all the fun they got in first half. But for those who knew what this movie was supposed to offer, second half is pure gold!

In fact, I started enjoying the movie even more after it took the serious turn in the first half (Gaurav’s heartbreak).

Maneesh Sharma’s direction is such that it will constantly make you wonder-“whom should I root for? Gaurav or Aryan?” He makes sure that there is equal focus on both the characters and their emotions.

Had he focused more on Gaurav’s character in the second half, it would have then come across as an obsessive or psycho character, which Gaurav is not. He lets Gaurav stay as the angry young boy who doesn’t know where to draw a line.

Thankfully, Maneesh Sharma manages to break one or two clichés too. For example, in Hindi films, every time a character turns evil, they show him change his expressions along with a dramatic tune playing in the background. Well, this is different. Gaurav’s transformation looks real and hard-hitting. There are a few jokes on superstars and their attitude too!

The cinematography is excellent, background music is amazing and VFX is jaw-dropping! Chase sequences have been crisply edited and do not look stretched.

Having said that, the climax is the only part of the movie which disappoints. It could have been a bit more impactful. However, what comes after the climax will melt your heart and make you shed tears.

Overall, ‘Fan’ will make you believe that Hindi cinema still has much more to offer than money-spinning entertainers (especially when they star superstars in lead); and will teach you the lesson that sirf Fan mat bano, zindagi mein aur bhi kuch bano!

Combo-On-Offer: Drama + Thriller

Verdict: ‘Fan’ deserves JABRA CLAPS for being a unconventional, engaging and intense film by Maneesh Sharma and for a terrific and heart-winning performance by Shah Rukh Khan!

Ki & Ka movie review: Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor’s film is ABHIMAAN in a kitchen!

Abhimaan in a kitchen. This one line sort of sums up the story of Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor’s Ki & Ka. The irony is that Abhimaan’s original cast Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan make cameo appearances in the R Balki film. Arjun plays Kabir. He’s rich but not a brat. He’s jobless but not worried. He’s sort of broke but rides on segways and has a strange fetish for railway carriages. Kareena is the ambitious Kia who believes that men are only alive to make women feel like crap. When Ki and Ka cross paths or flights they realise their differences and conflicts are extremely sexy and attractive. They roll under bedsheets, exchange multiple kisses and make us believe that a stay at home husband and a working woman can happily co-exist. It doesn’t take too long before the illusion shatters and reality crawls in to bring up its ugly head. Ki and Ka tests your patience but salvages itself in a second half that seems in a rush to reach its end.

What’s hot

Arjun Kapoor proves that with a good role and a director he can pull off anything. Not making his Ka empathetic or a sorry figure he brings out the fine balance of anger and love to his role. Using subtlety and believing that less is more he gives us a convincing performance. Balki is able to create the right friction between his actors to bring out the drama of the sexes. Kareena’s final outburst is fantastic and also a sort of painful reminder of why we miss her so much on the large screen. Amitabh and Jaya’s cameo is a BIG surprise and the only scene that actually stays with you till the end. Loved how Balki for a moment made us believe we were actually in their living room!

What’s not

There isn’t enough diversity or scope to develop these characters beyond the obvious in the film. And that’s a big bummer. We are stuck watching long drawn monologues and back and forth banter between Ki and Ka who argue about their personal beliefs and values. We are never explained why Arjun doesn’t want to work. What’s driven him up the wall to the extent that he wants to become a stay at home husband? And there’s nothing wrong with him making that choice but we wish Balki had given us a better backstory. The songs are a distraction to the lack of a better plot and don’t really take the story anywhere.

What to do

Ki and Ka is sweet and has its moments, but I couldn’t stop myself from saying ‘yeh dil maange more!’

When MS Dhoni comes on screen, you expect him to walk confidently to the crease as a manic crowd chants his name in the background. In the first teaser of MS Dhoni – The Untold Story, what he says instead is: “Mahendra Singh Dhoni Ticket Collector South Eastern Railway reporting for duty sir.”

As Sushant Singh Rajput revealed the first teaser of the Dhoni biopic on Tuesday, he managed to pass that toughest test for an actor – he has melded into the character and you actually saw Mahi, the man and not Sushant, the actor. The teaser, also, is just brilliant.

As the title says, this is MS Dhoni’s untold story, the years of hard work which went into making him an overnight success. As Sushant gets instructions as a TC on his first day of work, we see the same iron glint in his eyes and the confident walk that has become the Indian captain’s prerogative on field

Later in the 48-second teaser, a pensive Sushant is then seen on a railway platform with chants of Dhoni after he scores a six to help India lift the world cup. The teaser effortlessly shows two sides of a man who is among the biggest sports success stories of India today.

Arun Pandey’s film is expected to shed light on Dhoni’s life, since not much is known about him before he shot to international stardom. Rajput trained with former Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More for a year to get the right looks, and even mannerisms, for his role in the biopic.

Plot: The year is 2009 and Osama Bin Laden is dead. Sharma (Manish Paul) is a budding Bollywood director whose plans to make a film with an Osama look-alike Paddi Singh (Pradhuman Singh) has come to a standstill. Meanwhile in the US, President Obama (Iman Crosson) has to prove to the world that they have shot the dreaded terrorist dead. He entrusts this job to his CIA agent David (Sikander Kher) who disguises himself as a Hollywood producer David Chaddha and lures Sharma and Paddi with a film. On the other hand Khaleeli (Piyush Mishra), a terrorist arms dealer wants the world to believe that Osama is alive. The rest of the film revolves around how David and Khaleeli try to trap Paddi and coax him into starring in a fake tape for their respective purposes.

Performances: Manish Paul, we love you as a funny man on your TV shows and award functions! However wish we could say the same about you here as well in this film. Is it because of his badly written role? Well, I haven't figured an answer to that yet..

It's extremely disheartening to see talented actors like Piyush Mishra being wasted in such roles. He seems to be grimacing through most of his lines..

Pradhuman Singh tries to lift up the film's spirit and succeeds but alas, not for a very long time. Blame it on the poor script and screenplay.

Sikander Kher's transition from a CIA agent to a producer is amazing. But sadly he fails to give a memorable performance.

Sugandha Garg's hammy acting and cringe worthy dialogues make you squirm in your seats.

Ali Zafar's cameo act...well I rest his case in your court!

Direction: Abhishek Sharma's 'Tere Bin Laden' is still remembered for its rib-tickling comedy and was a sleeper hit at the box office. Next the director made 'The Shaukeens' (stop scratching your heads...Remember 'Manali Trace'? Yes..that movie!). Just as we are about to forgive you for that here comes the sequel of 'Tere Bin Laden' that makes us want to bang our heads in despair.

I remember the makers telling that the film carries no social message and its sole purpose is to purely entertain! But hey guys, what about giving us a film which has a sensible PLOT? Trust me but even some of the WhatsApp messages that I come across often are far more funnier and entertaining than what the gags in this film has to offer.

A Osama doppelganger torn between Americans and terrorists. The idea sounds intriguing and funny, doesn't it? But sadly it remains only on paper.

Thankfully the film doesn't have too many songs.

The premise then shifts to Karachi, Pakistani where a few members of a terrorist organization are planning to hijack that same very flight and take its passengers as hostages.

What follows next is how Neerja overcomes her fear drawing parallels from her failed marriage and becomes a saviour for the passengers on the hijacked flight on that fateful night.

Performances: Sonam Kapoor gives an honest performance as Neerja though she takes her own time to sink her teeth into her role. Shabana Azmi as Neerja's mother Rama has some shining moments that leave you emotional. The mother-daughter bonding is extremely heart-warming. The rest of the cast too is apt and add various layers to the story of those crucial 17 hours of hijack translated on-screen.

Direction: Ad-man Ram Madhvani makes his debut as a film director with 'Neerja'. One must applaud him for choosing such a sensitive subject for his debut vehicle. However this captain of the ship's journey isn't so smooth as there are a few scenes which could have had some more intensity to make 'Neerja' a gripping tale. He takes his own time to build a claustrophobic atmosphere. But in the process, the film slows down a bit which could work against it.

Saiwyn Quadras's screenplay could have been a bit more taut to create maximum impact. Inspite of these flaws, 'Neerja' deeply moves you especially the last 10-15 minutes which are quite impressive and heart-wrenching!

The film also has some soulful songs and music. The track 'Aisa Kyun Maa', a beautiful rendition stays with you for a long time.

Verdict: We give 'Neerja' 4 Stars for its emotional and inspiring tale which leaves you with goosebumps by the end of the journey.

Life seems pretty good for Wade until he meets Ajax (Skrein), a twisted individual with his own evil plans. Ajax performs an experiment on Wade that gives the latter a set of superpowers. But this gift comes with a price and Wade seeks out Ajax to exact revenge.Deadpool traces the origin story of an unlikely, but extremely entertaining superhero.

REVIEW: Right from the opening credits itself you'll find yourself realizing that this is the kind of superhero movie which is definitely different. In fact, it wouldn't be wrong to say that it is a much-needed shot in the arm for the superhero genre in general. While there has been no shortage of comic book hero adaptations into film in recent times, Deadpool is one with a difference. For one, it breaks the fourth wall - that barrier between the film and the audience. This results in the kind of viewer involvement that is both endearing and extremely refreshing.

We find out about how Wade Wilson came to be a superhero via a series of jump cuts, flashbacks and oodles of humour. And then there's Wade's girlfriend, the feisty Vanessa (Baccarin) who is as messed up as he is. While their brand of romance has to be seen to be believed, their chemistry manages to be downright kinky to say the least, but delightfully enough, very real.

Wade's buddy Weasel (Miller), a barkeep, is also his wingman. And when both Wade and Weasel share screen space, they're a laugh riot. While the rest of the cast is suitably funny (don't miss the fantastically-named Negasonic Teenage Warhead, played by Hildebrand), this really is Reynolds' moment in the sun all the way. He surely has come a long way since 2011's very ordinary Green Lantern. In fact, what elevates this movie to another level is not just the snarky one-liners, but the plethora of cross-references to a lot of other superhero films as well. Supported by a very clever script, Deadpool is deliciously irreverent, subversive and uproariously funny.

Plot: Mumbai 1990. The film opens with few scenes from 'Ghayal'. Cut to Mumbai 2015. Ajay Mehra (Sunny Deol) suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after losing his wife and daughter. However he is still a man on mission and this time his weapon is his publication house 'Satyakam' which secretly also has a spy sort of agency whose job is to hunt the morally corrupted.

In a turn of events, the retired ACP turned RTI activist Joe D'Souza (Om Puri) is murdered by Prince (Abhilash Kumar), son of the city's most influential businessman Raj Bhansal (Narendra Jha). This shocking event is accidentally captured by a group of youngsters (Shivam Patil, Aanchal Munjal, Rishabh Arora and Diana Khan) in their video-cam while they are busy shooting footages for a wild-life documentary.

Things take an ugly turn when Raj begins his hunt for these youngsters to prevent his own son from going behind the bars. And this time too Ajay Mehra has no choice but to go back to his old ways.

Performances: Sunny Deol is back in full form as Ajay Mehra. He is fierce and is in no mood to go easy on the bad guys. At the same time we even get to see an emotional side of him.

Soha Ali Khan as Rhea lends a good support. Shivam Patil, Aanchal Munjal, Rishabh Arora and Diana Khan have done their roles pretty well.

Narendra Jha as the villain Raj Bhansal has his own menacing moments but quite a few (Oh, we terribly missed Amrish Puri's Balwant Rai!)

Direction: This time Sunny is not only acting in the film but also helming it. His efforts don't go in waste as we do get to see a glimpse of the 90s cinema which probably our parents terribly miss these days.

'Ghayal Once Again' has some kick-ass action scenes but you also get treated to probably the 'longest car chase' sequence you have witnessed in Bollywood in recent times which in turn pulls down the film a bit for it is pretty tiresome to watch. Sunny Deol's films have always been known for their 'dumdaar' dialogues but his latest flick has none which is highly disappointing especially for people who have grown up watching his films.

Plot: Adi Tomar's ( R Madhavan) dream to win the boxing gold for India gets shattered when his own coach Dev Khatri spikes his gloves and causes him to lose the match. Shattered by this loss and betrayal Adi turns to the world of booze, brothel and bar-fights until his friends pull him back to this sport but this time as a coach of the Indian women's boxing. However Adi proves to be a bone of contention for his old adversaries who get him transferred to Chennai. There he chances upon a rebellious, fire spewing fisherwoman Madhi ( Ritika Singh) whose hidden passion for boxing breathes new life in his shattered dreams. Thus begins the 'taming of the shrew' and a journey where greater lessons are to be learnt outside the boxing ring.

Performance: For most of us Madhavan is still Maddy from 'Rehna Na Tere Dil Mein'. However 'Saala Khadoos' presents a very different side of him which will definitely remain etched in our minds for a long time. The actor completely nails it as the strict, no-nonsense boxing coach. ( Also girls beware! Some of you might find yourself drooling over his hot looks by the end of the film just like me)

Ritika Singh is a great find! This young girl oozes of raw talent and is quite impressive in her debut film. Despite sharing screen space with a known co-star she gets nowhere lost in her scenes and stands on her own making sure that your eyes remain glued to her.

Mumtaz Sorcar as Ritika's elder sister Laxmi aka Lux and Naseer as the junior coach have some 'shining' moments.

Zakar Hussain as the corrupt and immoral Dev Khatri too has done a good job.

Direction: Sudha Kongara Prasad has both, written and directed this film. She needs to be applauded for penning a story that focusses on one of the most neglected sports in India i.e women boxing and making sure that it tugs the heartstrings of the audience without being too preachy. However on the flip side, few scenes may be deja vu for you if you have seen Shah Rukh Khan's 'Chak De India'. Also the 'forced' love angle waters down the plot a bit as it looks a bit clichéd. Having said that, at the same time 'Saala Khadoos' is equally engaging and some heart-touching scenes from it leave you smiling from ear to ear.

The boxing sequences look realistic and are a fun to watch. The film also has plenty of crackling moments.

Story: The story begins with the lead actors Tusshar Kapoor and Vir Das, two sex addict advertising professionals getting attracted to Sunny Leone and her sister (twin role). In search of a true love, the lusty likens pursue both the sisters. In some time, both of them understood that they were chasing totally wrong persons for their true love. The problem arises when Sunny Leone invites them on her marriage. The entire hotchpotch gets wind up with nothing but happy ending with bit of naughty actions.

Performances: Tusshar Kapoor as Sunny Kele tries very hard to perform as a star performer in the sex comedy movie. After seeing him uttering dialogues, one may think that why his role in Golmaal movie got many appreciations. Vir Das as Aditya Chothia is falling flat on his jaws with bad timing. How can we forget to talk about the center of attraction and the only selling point of the movie, Sunny Leone? She justifies her double role as twin sisters, Lily Lele and Laila Lele.. Call it as her geek look or bold look, both of her avatars are droolworthy. Milap Zaveri could have saved this sinking boat if he would give more screen space to evergreen comedian Asrani, Suresh Menon and Riteish Deshmukh. Their roles seem redundant at times and doesn’t add any value to the movie.

Direction: It’s a directorial debut movie for Milap Zaveri. There’s nothing exciting about the direction to be honest. Every dialogue carries its alternate dirty meaning which makes the audience laugh just to hide their embarrassment. In spite of many incongruent scenes and superficial storyline, Milap Zaveri deserves a full credit to incorporate every small and BIG aspects of sex comedy movie in Mastizaade. Cinematography and shoot locations are quite exotic honeymoon destinations like Pattaya, etc. which make you live till the movie ends. Somehow, the director forgets to draw a thin line between pun and vulgarity.
