Over the last two weekends we had a little show of wok in progress at the studio and darkroom I share with Heather McDonough, Melanie Stidolph and David San Millán del Río. We all showed something and we also had some loveley wet collodion prints by David Emitt Adams made on the back of 35mm film canisters on display. Here are some installation shots.

Ciguñas

Cigueñas are storks. This is a picture I took earlier this summer in Castromocho, a small village in Castilla y León in Spain. There are dozens of storks in every village nesting mainly on the church roofs and towers. In this village no less than 80 storks had nested on the church until they had to be removed because the roof was caving in. Some of these found their new home here on the silos in the abandoned flour factory outside the village. Storks are protected in Spain and much loved, partly because they function as a sort of pest control as they eat small rodents; and partly maybe because of the myth that they bring the babies...?

Billingsgate

I have recently been photographing at Billingsgate Fish Market in Canning Town. It has meant very early mornings for me but it has been great to see the sun rise and be around these people for a while whose working day is over before most people leave the house. Admittedly gruesome, Billingsgate is a truely weird and wonderful place. Here is a small selection of my pictures.

Fogged

I took a portrait of friend, singer and performer Gemma Storr last week. I shot it mainly digitally but at the end of the session I took a few shots with my 5x4. To add to the weird colours created by using coloured gels I used film I knew to be old and fogged for these large format shots. Interesting what happens when the film gets partially exposed. One sheet became almost entirely monochrome.

An old friend, whom I hadn't seen in ages came to visit. I took a portrait of her. It was a rainy dark, dark day. It was cold at the studio and the lightmeter broke. Though technically imperfect I think I like it.

Venta de Baños

Through personal connections I have gotten to know Venta de Baños fairly well. I started photographing this town in Palencia in Castilla y León in northern Spain over Christmas. It's a town with a very interresting history centered around the expansion and then decline of the rail network. I'll go back to continue working on this soon.

I took the photographs for the cover of Slovakian singer Jana Kirschner's new CD earlier this year. I just received the finished artwork. I'm really happy with the outcome.

Long overdue

At the beginning of November we had another open studio. I showed two book projects, one finished one not.
LONDON STUTTGART LISBOA STUTTGART LONDON Is a collection of polaroids I took while traveling by car from, well, London to Stuttgart, to Lisbon and back through the year of 2008. I've been meaning to make a small book out of these for ages and what I showed at the studio was still less than a dummy, but I am slowly getting there. I displayed the original polaroids in sequence on shelves in the studio windows.

The second book was is a unique book made of the prints used in my exhibition Wo bin ich? Where am I? last year in Stuttgart. All prints had been wallpaper pasted to the walls there. They are now in the book kinks and tears and all. The title of the book: BILDER AUS ARCHIVEN UND SAMMLUNGEN - STUTTGART translates Pictures from archives and collections-Stuttgart.

Etching

I was in Berlin recently learning a bit about etching at Eva Pietzker's great workshop Druckstelle. My main interest was and still is photo etching, for which there are various techniques. Photo etching was only a small part of the workshop I took part in however and the more satisfying and interesting prints I produced were nothing to do with photography. The investigation into photo etching will continue... but in the meantime here are my two favourite prints produced during the week in Berlin.

A busy summer

These last two months I have been busy running workshops for young people for various organisations and galleries in London. I concentrated in most of the workshops on old and simple techniques making and using pinhole cameras and making cyano type prints. Here are some of the results. It's a mix of work from different groups and includes work by Ann, Cheryl and Rainbow from week 2 and 3 of Southwark Future University at City of London Academy in Bermondsey and pictures taken by Neil with different cameras made by himself and other people in his his Duke of Edinburgh photography group in Redbridge.

Cyano types

I am preparing for back-to-basics summer photography workshops with children and young people. We will be making pinhole cameras and cyano type prints. In my own experimentation the camera less images were the most successful. These two were made leaving a stack of matches and a plastic water bottle respectively on a piece of sensitised paper (cyano-type) in the sun for about 15 minutes.
