What Catie Wore Wednesday? #66

I know, I've been missing. I haven't been doing much including taking pictures of Catie. I have two really horrible photos to share with you today to prove how tough she can be.

At least you can see her face in this photo.

She has my mitten on her foot and she was wearing her funny toque, too bad she wouldn't let Brad catch of picture of it, plus she wasn't wearing pants, only underwear so maybe the hiding was for the best.

Two really bad photos, an apartment with terrible light... I could promise to do better but I'm pretty sure I won't follow through on that promise.

Bathtub Vinyl

Check it out, an actual blog post. Don't expect this to be a trend though, as much as I wish this was the first of many posts sadly it's just the only for a while. I can't shake this creative funk.

You can tell blogging has been light around here because it's been over two weeks since Christmas and I still haven't mentioned here that I got an incredible gift this year. My sister-in-law organized with everyone to get me my very own Silhouette. I know I haven't shown any evidence on the blog here but I'm so thrilled with this present. I have a list of projects in my head waiting to be made but they all involve gathering supplies and it's super cold out. I did come across one today on Pinterest that I thought was cute and took no time to put together.

I put this on the bathtub in our guest bathroom, the one that Catie uses and although these photos make it look crooked it really is on straight (I think).

It was exciting to cut my very first vinyl, the opportunities are endless if I would just go out and get some darn supplies.

For Christmas we got Catie some Elmo toothpaste and a new toothbrush and we can't believe how much she loves the thing. She wants to brush her teeth many times a day which would be awesome if it weren't so annoying. At least they're getting brushed though. You can see her shirt is really wet, that comes from the spitting part, she's not so good at hitting the sink.

Those are all the photos I took this week but I thought I'd throw in a bonus. Every year my sister in law gives us a CD of all the photos she's taken over the year, they're old but cute so I thought I'd pull out a few to share today.

Thanks to Pinterest we've been eating some especially delicious foods lately and I thought it was time to share a list of food I've been making .

We'll start with the Autumn Chopped Salad

I actually made a salad very similar to this before I saw the pin but they made a couple changes I was intrigued by. My salad was crisp lettuce, toasted pecans, craisens, Parmesan, feta cheese and a little poppy seed dressing to finish it off. They skipped the Parmesan but they added pears, bacon and a splash of balsamic vinaigrette. Now the bacon I thought was unnecessary but the pears and vinaigrette were both salad changing and definitely made it into the usual recipe. This makes a delicious dinner and would be great at a potluck.

Jalapeno Poppers
Who doesn't love jalapeno poppers?

I'm not super wild about the store bought ones though, something about the breading. These looked so yummy I thought I'd try them and they did not disappoint, I'd make them again in a heartbeat. You simply take Pillsbury crescent rolls, cut each one in half and then put a blob of cream cheese, a chunk of a jalapeno and top with a bit of cooked bacon. Fold them up and bake. I made one change that I recommend though, these poppers only cook for 10 to 15 minutes which to me meant I was going to have crunchy jalapenos and sure enough someone mentioned that in the comments. Before I cut up my peppers I threw them in the oven to bake until they were slightly tender. Also, again both Brad and I thought the bacon was in the way here. We didn't like the texture of it and I would skip it next time. Now that's two recipes in a row where I've nixed the bacon so let me just mention that I do really love bacon I just don't think it's needs to be thrown into just anything.

Skinny Baked Potato Soup

This isn't actually a recipe that I made but a friend of mine did and it was awesome. It uses a whole head of cauliflower to make it a little better for you and I loved it.

Braided Spaghetti Bread

This recipe was actually emailed to me, I didn't find it on Pinterest but of course it's there. It was so good it deserves two pictures. You take bread dough and roll it out like you would cinnamon rolls, spread it with garlic olive oil (or butter). In the centre lay some spaghetti in sauce, top with mozzarella cheese and braid it up. This was awesome. Garlic bread and spaghetti together, so good. Make it tonight.

Better than Olive Garden Zuppa Toscana

Everyone loves the Olive Garden right? What's not to love so most of you have probably had their Zuppa Toscana soup. It's a soup with potatoes, sausage and kale among other things.

I'll be the first to admit that this soup is not good for you but it was so amazing we couldn't stop raving about it. I served it with crusty baguette and don't you dare skip the bread, it was the best part. Now as much as we loved this soup I would make some changes next time, it had far too much sausage, I'd use half the amount and add extra potatoes. Also, I could have used more kale so I'll make those changes next time as there will certainly be a next time.

Kung Pao Ramen Noodles

I watched this movie not that long ago called Ramen Girl, now don't rush out and watch it because it really wasn't very good but the entire movie is about the process of making ramen which made me crave it something fierce. I did a quick Pinterest search and found a bunch of yummy looking variations and this was the one I started with. It was awesome and easy.

White Chicken Enchiladas

For Christmas dinner this year my Mother in law made white enchiladas and I loved them and wanted more and then I came across this recipe which I loved since it doesn't include any cream of anything soup. I do think her amounts are a little off though, there's no way her recipe called for enough cheese, I think I doubled it and I didn't fill nearly as many tortillas as she said too. Also I discovered that I hate leftover enchiladas so next time I'd make a teeny tiny pan of these. They were awesome the first night though.

Chicken Broccoli Supreme

Here's another no cream of anything soup. It can be tough to find casseroles that don't use a can of nasty stuff but this is a good one. Now not good for you at all as it's topped with buttered Ritz crackers but it's super yummy and pretty.

Cheesy Bacon Pull Apart Bread

While I was down at my sister's house we went to a potluck so I made this and it was delicious and gone quickly. Just don't make mistake, make sure your rolls don't thaw too much before you use them. Mine was much more difficult to make than it should have been.

Pizza Bites

Oh how I love these. A tiny ball of dough with two slices of pepperoni and a square of mozzarella tucked inside. You stick them in a pie plate and serve with yummy sauce for dipping, so delicious.

Buffalo Chicken Bites

One last recipe and these I actually haven't tried yet, they're on the menu for dinner tonight and I have high hopes.

So there you have it a handful of tried and tested really delicious meals. You should incorporate some into your week. I don't know where you live but today where I live it's a perfect day for Zuppa Toscana.

2012 Resolutions

I wasn't going to make any this year, I just felt like I couldn't be bothered but a couple seemed to come up on their own so here they are...

Brad and I watch too much tv. It's what we do together and really, there are so many better things we could be doing so one night a week (probably Monday), we'll turn off the TV for the evening. We love to play games so it'll be fun to do that again and I look forward to finding other ways to enjoy each others company.
We live on a pretty tight budget and we've been doing okay but Christmas always puts you over. We didn't go crazy but we want to tighten back up and get back on track so for the next two weeks we've vowed to not spend money on anything unnecessary. This does mean that the couple of crafts I had on the go will have to be put on hold meaning you'll get some wordy posts and not crafts posts for a bit.
Come up with more activities for Catie to do and spend less time watching movies. We've fallen into some bad habits but today was much better, I made play dough and then we made brownies together.
There's a weight related goal here too but I'm not ready to talk about it yet, that'll come later.

So that's it, nothing major just little goals but I think they're good.

I hope you've made some good goals and are having a great start to your new year.

New tights from Grandma

Catie often has horsie rides with Daddy and today it was Daddy's turn. She even reared up and neighed just like Daddy does.

These cans were part of her Christmas present and she loves to stack them. Today she invented a new game with Daddy.

We went to a play place with Bryn the other day and they loved the bouncy house

This really crummy horse merry go round cost $2.00! We lucked out and walked past it while two other girls had actually payed for it so we threw her on quick. She loved it.

This high chair was really difficult. I used vinyl which meant no pins and the piping was big and really stiff. I was sure I'd never work on another one but all it took to love this project was finishing. It looked so much better than the origianl.

Ruffly Little Apron

Henrick got the cute finger puppets but big sister Bryn needed a gift this year too. I'd made Catie an apron, and Gwen an apron (I can not get over how different Catie looks in those old photos) but not one for Bryn. These girls like to bake and they can be ridiculously messy so it isn't just a cute accessory but a need.

Three girls in matching aprons would be adorable, I could have used the same pattern but I have a thing for pleats these days and I love the rounded bottom as opposed to the pointed bottom of Catie's, so they may not match but Bryn's might also be the cutest one.

I had Catie model it for you all, in her pajamas (I asked her to hold Mr. Brown out like that so I'd be able to get the apron in the photo, I was surprised when she actually did it though).

I'll have to get a photo of the three cute ladies in their aprons.

What Catie Wore Wednesday #63

Last week I had so few pictures (two to be exact) that I didn't post any of them, I thought I'd add them to this week's post so it will be especially picture heavy.

Lately this has become her favourite place to watch TV. She goes into the bathroom and brings out her stool and carefully places it right there.

Here's yet another photo of her carefully stacked presents under the tree.

We got the girls together and made cookies for Santa

They're so much fun in the kitchen and they all love to stir and dump.

We made peanut butter blossoms which were especially fun because they needed to be rolled in sugar. Catie only ate one spoonful of sugar and despite the mess on the counter they really didn't get that much on the floor. The girls had fun and Santa had delicious cookies so our plan was successful.

Christmas Eve, watching a movie before bed.

We got ready to put out our cookies and milk but I didn't want there to be a problem so first we gave her a cookie and some milk. When she was done I had her carefully carry over a plate to the fireplace. She set it down, I put down the milk and then I told her it was time for bed. "My COOKIES", she sobbed over and over, with huge crocodile tears. She was devastated that she had to leave the cookies there. Perhaps she's a little young for that tradition, we'll try again next year.

Christmas morning. She came out all sleepy and immediately ran to the play kitchen we'd assembled. She loves it and plays with it constantly. I look forward to the day when she can work the timer herself so I don't have to go over there every three minutes to re-start it. I'd just say no but she gets so happy every time it dings.

She wasn't so sure she was interested in stockings so I pulled out the top item which happened to be the rubber ducky we got in Utah but left behind. My sister had to send me a package anyway so she slipped that in. Catie was thrilled to see it and one ducky was all it took to convince her that stockings are awesome.

Before church playing with the kitchen. The first gift she opened was some pots and pans and she immediately ran them over. Next she opened some play food and it too was taken over right away.

She also got some magnetic wooden paper dolls and she loves them. She doesn't quite get the point of dressing them yet but she really likes to stack them into different piles.

3 Different Bracelets

I love making homemade gifts for Christmas but I hate that I can't post them until after they've been given.

These particular gifts I made for my friend Michelle. Her birthday falls shortly after Christmas so I made her the three different bracelets.

They were all easy and I used three different tutorials to make them. The first bracelet on the left is a knock off Chan Luu bracelet. I didn't actually follow this tutorial but it's a good one. There are a couple loops on the end so you can choose which size works best.

I love the amber beads with the tan leather.

I used a vintage button from my Grandma to make the clasp.

The middle is a combination of metal washers from the hardware store and satin ribbon.

This bracelet involves threading the ribbon through the washers in a really simple way. I love the combination of the soft ribbon and the hard washers. Since the washers really do come from the hardware store they're inexpensive to make.

The tutorial I followed is for a necklace but I think the amount of washers is a bit much so I made a smaller version, great instructions though.

Lastly I made a twine and hex nut bracelet.

Again, the nuts are from the hardware store. This bracelet requires some braiding and threading and that's it. Easy. And this tutorial worked really well. I used another vintage button to finish off the back of this one.

So there you have it, three easy and unique bracelets that made a great gift.

Christmas Stockings

A couple years ago I made us Christmas Stockings but since then my craftiness has increased dramatically. My skills are better and my tastes are better so when I pulled out the stockings I knew this year I wouldn't use the old ones anymore. Plus I think stockings should be made out of felt and the ones I'd made were far too small. Here were the old ones, don't mock my Santa.

I used the same patterns for the new stockings (except I clearly made a new Santa) but all the pieces are made out of felt and hand stitched on.

I hung them on the mantle exactly the way my Mother always did, a piece of red yarn (only I used red ribbon) strung across the mantle and the stockings pinned on. I wouldn't mind some actual ornament holders one day but for now ribbon and pins works great.

I love the way they turned out but I'm really kicking myself for not putting Mom and Dad instead of Brad and Laura. I don't know what I was thinking but I'm not unpicking the hand stitching, maybe next year.

I think Catie's is clearly the cutest, that Santa is awesome. She looked at it and said, "Clause!"

Hand Print Ornaments

This week would be full of all sorts of fun posts if most of them weren't gifts. Instead I have one or two and the rest will have to wait, check back the week after Christmas for some fun posts.

This one is a gift for my Mother-in-law but since she doesn't read the blog it's safe to post.

We gathered Bryn, Gwen and Catie together and this craft was super quick.

We pressed their hands into embossing ink and then onto the Christmas balls. We then sprinkled the powder on the balls, tapped off the excess and using a heat gun melted the powder.

I added bows and tags with their names and the year so Grandma can tell apart who's who.

Here's Catie's. She's actually a little young for this project and kept moving around her fingers so it took a couple tries. I was surprised how easy it was to wash off the ink and unmelted powder and start again. Third time was a charm though and we got a good print.

Gwen was a pro and hers is perfect, on the first try too.

And Bryn's.

We'll give them to Grandma this week so she can hang them on the tree.

Advent Calendar {Re-Post}

Last year I joined Jill in a sew along to make an awesome advent calendar. It was a ton of work and I barely finished in time but I've been so happy to have it this year. Every day I pull a chair up to the calendar (I didn't want it within little hands) and Catie climbs up and hangs an ornament; it was the perfect year to start the tradition. Also, everyday as she pulls out a new ornament I'm impressed with how great they look and I'm glad I took the time to hand sew them all.

I thought I'd re-post my advent so you can take a look, sorry if you've seen it before.

December 1st and my Advent Calendar is finished! When I started this sew along with Jill I didn't realize just what I was getting myself into, every singe stitch on this calendar is sewn by hand making everything take significantly longer than I had anticipated. Every time I pulled out a different project my calendar loomed over me. I'm glad to say that it's finished, I love it and I'm now free to work on other projects.

As a quick recap, week 1 we cut out and embroidered all of our numbers and sewed them onto the backing piece. Week two we cut and sewed the tree on and made 8 ornaments. Week three we made 8 more ornaments and then sewed all of our buttons onto the tree. This last week we finished the calendar which involved finishing up the last 8 ornaments, sewing a backing piece on the calendar to hide all those stitches and adding a hanger. You're supposed to slip a wooden dowel into the holder on top but I haven't bothered to pick one up so it may be finished but there's now way to hang it. Oops.

What Catie Wore Wednesday #62

Catie's favourite thing to do these days is to stack, and re-stack the Christmas presents. As long as she continues to not open them I'm fine with it.

We went to visit my parents and Catie couldn't get enough of their dog Spot. He'd leave the room and she'd look around and ask, "Spot? Where Go?"

I think in this picture Spot had just licked her nose, I could be wrong though.

I made her this awesome cardboard car complete with spinable steering wheel, a window and a door that opens. The one thing it's missing is wheels but I figured she wouldn't notice. She loves it and decided laying in it was the right thing to do. She had a great time yesterday colouring it and she loves to bring toys and sit with them in her car.

Refinished Nativity

I think I've mentioned before that I have a beautiful Willow Tree nativity that I love. It was given to me in pieces over the years by my in-laws and one of the pieces included an unfinished wooden stable. I've used it as is for a couple of years but this year I seem to be on the hunt for craft after craft but I don't have a ton of supplies on hand. I did however have everything I needed to finish this project.

Here's what it looked like when I got it. You can see I'd already started to stain the stand for the angel.

I quickly sanded any rough spots and then used a foam brush to apply a thin coat of stain. I used the same stain I used on the top piece of our headboard so it didn't cost anything.

Here's the after. I felt like it needed a little colour so I made this quick little pennant banner out of paper. I think it makes it all pop a little.

Lots of cute pictures this week

I've had this dress for a really long time and now it finally, almost fits. Looks great with her boots.

Cuddling with Daddy after church.

I was an awesome Mommy this week and despite my hate of snow I still took her outside to play.

She got really mad every time she fell down but otherwise she loved her time in the snow.

I couldn't quite capture the moment but she wore Daddy's gloves and tie around the house.

Later in the day, carefully lining up her dishes with a penny on each.

We finally set up our Christmas tree and it went so much better than we expected. Catie was a big help hanging the ornaments, she spread them out really well. After it was done she walked around and around the tree.

I look forward to lots of Christmas pictures this month.

Regular to Skinny Jeans

So it's no surprise that it's now winter which equals snow and I've quickly realized that it's far easier to put Catie in boots than regular shoes. Boots require skinny jeans though. Catie has one pair but they're kind of distinctive so I feel like she can't wear them very often.

I didn't want to buy new jeans so I pulled out a pair of her old pants that fit except they were a little short. I forgot to take a picture so here's an old one of when they did fit. You can imagine they'd be super dorky too short but skinny jeans are acceptable if they're a tad short.

I used her new skinnies as a guide to turn those old jeans into these.

They're kind of extreme skinnies but they look great with her boots and if I hadn't had some tension problems it would have only taken 20 ish minutes.

They turned out so cute and were so easy I may just make another pair.

What Catie Wore Wednesday #60

Every once in a while I think of a fun activity for Catie and this one was a real winner. I gave her a little bit of rice and a bunch of different containers and some measuring spoons to pour and scoop. It was really messy but so much fun that it occupied her for at least 45 minutes.

I think this was right before bedtime.

This picture doesn't do the dress justice. My sister-in-law made 5 dresses for all the girl cousins and 4 matching vests for the boy cousins. They all wore their outfits to a Christmas Party, they made such a cute, easy to find group.

We recently took a trip to Ikea and Catie was thrilled with the beds to climb on.

She also loved this cute little chair.

Noah's Ark Quiet Book

Since I posted my Quiet Book Templates I've had a couple people ask me to make them their own and normally I turn them down flat because they're such a ridiculous amount of work. But when Jan asked me to make her one I was feeling especially poor so I agreed. Once we got down to specifics I was even happier to make a book, she only wanted the Noah's Ark page. The finished book is super cute and hopefully Jan loves it.

You open up the cover and see a title page (cutting these letters out were a pain, it made me wish I had a Silouette).

Flip open the next page and you have a landscape scene that will have velcro dots for all the animals, I'm just having a hard time finding some.

The next page includes the ark with a pocket to slip in the animals.

The animals. I blanket stitched them all and hand sewed everything using cute little black beads for the yes.

The back cover looks the same as the front.

There it is, a Noah's Ark quiet book. I shipped it off, hopefully she'll actually get it before Christmas.

Sarah Slean - Land and Sea

I don't listen to the radio in the car very often but lately my music selection seemed slightly stale so I switched to the radio and I'm just surprised at the really poor quality of music that's popular. It seems that every song is filled with dance club, synthesized beats so that they all sound the same. The lyrics can't even begin to be called poetic or intelligent, also is it just me or do they only play the same 10 songs?

This crummy radio selection only proves the quality of real artists, like my favourite, Sarah Slean. I've mentioned her many times on my blog but not recently and since then I have lots of new US readers. I figured most of you are unaware of this Canadian gem.

Her music is sometimes quirky but always so musical and beautiful. The lyrics are heartfelt and intelligent and to see her in concert is really something. Brad and I recently had that opportunity. She came and played and we were once again awed by her brilliance.

She has a new album out that everyone should listen too, it's a perfect mix of slow and fast and I thought I'd link to a couple songs for you.

She recently did a series for CBC with an orchestra and performed some of the songs from the new album, this was my favourite.

Napoleon

Land & Sea would make a great Christmas present so listen to these songs, be inspired and then purchase the album. There are tons of her songs on youtube so if you need more convincing check some of them out.

What Catie Wore Wednesday #60

Allright, I'm aware that these pictures are getting worse but she really does dislike having her picture taken. It's getting more and more difficult to take a decent photo. Also, it gets dark so ridiculously early these days.

It's hard to tell but this sweater is so cute. It has serious pink ruffles that are adorable.

I'm embarrassed by this project. I started making it at least 3 months ago and it's taken me this long to finish. I would see it sitting there and just push it aside. To make things worse it's not even a project for me, it's a gift for a friend (a very belated gift). This two weeks of posting commitment was a great motivator, I needed a post for today and it was the project closest to completion so I pulled out the mod podge and finished.

My friend Janine asked me to make her an S and since I hadn't made it to her wedding I said I'd love to make it as a gift. She said she wanted blues and black so went out and found this awesome blue frame and some pretty paper.

I had planned on using some damask paper to frame the letter but it just wasn't quite right so I went with the colour stripes on the side and I love them.

This is the second S I've done and because of the swoops in the letter they're kind of a challenge. It's easy to lose the shape of the letter. I'm really happy with how it turned out though.

I didn't realize just how few pictures I'd taken this week until it was time to get this post ready, sorry but this week has included a lot of potty training and I can only take so many pictures that look like this.

I hadn't planned on using this picture at all (she'll love me for it later hey?) but there were just so few I figured I'd better.

Dancing with Daddy

Look at that sad red nose, she's had a cold this week with also contributed to the lack of pictures.

She sneezes and then runs to the box of Kleenex, grabs one and brings it to me so I can wipe her nose. She was in the bath one morning and I'd gone to the other room for a minute. She sneezed and then repeated, "tissue, tissue, tissue" until I got back. It'd be much cuter if her nose wasn't so raw and painful.

A do have a video to add but it's not from this past week, it's from when I was in Utah. Grandma taught her the crocodile song and she loves it.
