It was soft and my curls and waves were pretty. I miss that. Now hormones probably have a place in that but so does diet and supplements too. I want my not so frizzy hair back people!

Shop for this book and others at Amazon.

About the Author

Jean M. Trying to get pregnant is a different experience now than it was a generation ago – back then, women simply threw away their birth control and went about their lives. Now there's a whole new life stage for women: Trying to Conceive (TTC). Like a lot of things these days, TTC involves a lot of information-seeking and a lot of stress. Desserts in jars are the newest treat on the sweet scene and are simply irresistible — as fun to make as they are to eat. In her new book Desserts in Jars: 50 Sweet Treats That Shine (May 2012), author Shaina Olmanson delivers page after page of these adorable single-serving treats that can be playful or sophisticated, and can even double as gifts and party favors! Olmanson got her start with her enormously popular blog, foodformyfamily.com, which attracts over 50,000 visitors monthly. She continues to make waves in the food world with this inventive idea that turns desserts from ho-hum into dazzling.

Desserts in Jars offers adaptations of classic desserts that lend themselves to a delightful presentation in a jar, like her petite apple pies and elegant pains au chocolat. But there are plenty of one-of-a-kind creations to get excited about too, like Peanut Butter and Jelly Parfaits, Pull-Apart Cinnamon Breads, and Basil-Strawberry Lemonade Granitas. Olmanson tucks in decoration tips and ideas, and even includes a section of "Mixes for Giving." From a kid's birthday one weekend to a grown-up gathering the next, there is no end to the ways you can feature these sensational little treats.

About the Author

Minnesota native Shaina Olmanson is a home cook, photographer, and mother of four young children. I’m not referring to posts wherein I reviewed a product for the company. That was a beneficial two way street. The company and I won in that instance.

No, I’m talking about the PR type emails I get all the time that only want their side to benefit in the form of a post on a blog which is nothing more than free advertising for them.

When a blogger posts a PR type post on their blog with no compensation… we are merely just giving free advertising to that company for their product, their cause, or whatever it is at the time. We are using our time, our talents, and our blog audience to advertise for them for free. I say it’s time to stop!

I have stopped posting non-review PR type posts unless a fee is paid because I woke up to the reality that these companies are taking advantage of us bloggers and many of us are letting them do it.

The majority of bloggers are women. Many times we are a one income family. Our time is just as valuable as the companies or their PR reps’ time is. They are getting paid to do what they do, so why shouldn’t us bloggers get paid to do their post for them?!

If a company/PR rep wants a post on my blog, there is a fee that has to be paid before the posts appears. Free Advertising on this blog will not happen again. This saves us money as well as we are not using a dryer sheet nor using electricity to run the dryer. You can also save money by making your own:

Make Your Own Pre-Wash Stain Remover

Make Your Own Laundry Starch

Homemade Fabric Softener

Homemade Wrinkle Releaser

Our dryer is currently out of commission. I wash a load or two, or three everyday and hang them outside… weather permitting. We’'ll get a part for it soon and I’ll be back to being able to do laundry every day. I used to do it all on Monday but my clothes line does not hold all the clothes now. I’d love to have another 4 line clothes line.

I said I hated cleaning the bathrooms but we save money in there as well by making our own cleaners with items we already have on hand. This not only saves money but we are not using harsh chemicals and either getting those on our skin or breathing the fumes. Try one of these recipes out:

Homemade Multi-Purpose Furniture Polish

Homemade Multi-Purpose Floor Cleaner

Homemade Drain Opener

Homemade Oven Cleaner

Homemade Carpet Cleaner

Homemade Window Cleaner

We shop thrift stores for not only canning jars but clothes, shoes, and more. Why pay full price for those things when children outgrow them faster than the clothes wear out. I like the thrill of the hunt as well as the money savings.

There are things we do every day to make do (like taping a laundry basket together or using bread ties to tie together) or things we do to stretch our supplies (food, etc.) such as using dry milk to cook/bake with instead of using organic milk we buy. Things we do to recycle and reuse, such as composting, reusing bread bags I bought for our homemade bread as well as the bread ties.

There are things we sacrifice so we can reach our goal of being debt free. We sacrifice things like a family vacation, etc.

I keep a running list of non-food and food item things we need to buy as well as farm/homestead supplies we need to get to do/finish projects around the place.

We make do because we want to and have a desire for a bigger picture. We want to be debt free. We want to be able to do things we haven’t done in a while or have put off because of finances. Can’t those pesky things just grow in the woods or along side the roads?

I hate having to decide what to cook when I make out the monthly menu. 3 meals x 8 people (ok 7 for breakfast and dinner aka lunch) is 24 plates a day x 30 (average month give or take) = 720 plates a month. EGAD! That goes back to my washing the dishes. I do have to say the children do help me out with those dishes sometimes.

I hate doing laundry! With 8 people in this home, there’s a LOT of laundry.

I hate doing laundry! That one deserves to be listed twice. I hate our dryer is out of commission at the time and I miss being able to wash a load on a rainy day and toss it in the dryer. I don’t mind the savings from line drying the clothes though. No worry about static cling either. lol

I hate having to sacrifice this for that … But that’s what us parents do for the good of the family.

I hate grocery shopping… with 6 children in tow who seem to want this and that plus everything in between. They get a “no” which is not what they wanted to hear. We have pared down our grocery lists to the basics with few frills but I won’t cave in for empty valued foods such as sugary, cold cereals and other junk food.

I hate having to stay on budget when there are so many things I need to pick up… canning jars to name one. I try to pick up any and all I see at thrift stores but with the gardening season in swing here, those are becoming more and more scarce. I hate to pay full price for a case of those in the stores. That makes my wallet scream. I hate paying full price for anything anyways. lol

I didn’t. I got the following in my email….

“The National Drowning Prevention Alliance has partnered with Life Saver Pool Fence to donate free pool safety barriers to certain families with backyard swimming pools.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA, May 15, 2012—Child safety experts agree that one of the best ways to protect toddlers from drowning is to isolate the swimming pool from the house with an effective barrier. But many families don’t realize drowning is swift and silent, or that an unsecured backyard swimming pool is a frequent site for horrific tragedy.

That’s why the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) teamed up with Life Saver Pool Fence Systems, Inc. (Life Saver) on National Water Safety Day, May 15th, to promote the Save a Life Program. The initiative will provide free pool fences to families whose child suffered a non-fatal submersion injury or to families who lost a child to drowning, but have another young child living in the home. Through the program, Life Saver will donate free pool fencing and installation each time a system is sold. The NDPA will help find and select appropriate recipients, while simultaneously promoting pool safety education.

“This is an ambitious program in which the NDPA and Life Saver hope to donate several pool fences each month,” says Eric Lupton, president of Life Saver Systems, a manufacturer of mesh pool safety fencing. “Backyard swimming pools are taking young lives at an alarming rate. We need to think of pools the same way we think of other dangers. If you wouldn’t own a car without seat belts, you shouldn’t own a pool without a safety fence.” He adds that while getting fences around backyard pools is the program’s primary goal, increasing public awareness about the importance of all pool safety steps is equally important.
“Drowning is preventable if you identify the risk and take steps to minimize it,” says Kim Burgess, National Drowning Prevention Alliance executive director. “That’s why we promote the Safer 3 message.”

Follow the Safer 3:

1. For Safer Water, prevent unsupervised access to pools and spas by installing four-sided isolation fencing, door alarms or automatic safety covers.

2. For Safer Kids, always designate a “Water Watcher” who will remain vigilant and undistracted while supervising children in or near water. Take in consideration we are a household of eight (8) now, so we are feeding a lot of mouths. He thinks we’ve got about 6 months supplies on hand but I don’t think he realizes how much is in the cabinets and pantry/utility room on the shelves or in 5 gallon buckets. I know he knows the shelves are almost completely full of home canned fruits, vegetables, jams, pickles, etc. but I don’t think he realizes how much is there. The freezers are stuffed as well. In other words, I think we’ve got more than 6 months on hand but not a year’s supply. There are a few things I’d like to buy to round out our supplies even more and hopefully reach a year’s supply on hand. Hubby works construction so weather can play a big factor into whether they get a day’s work in.

So how long could you and your family survive on your food supply on hand?

It’s really easy to do, uses things I have on hand, and is fresh thus has not been sitting on a store shelf for a long time.

Below is the recipe. Sorry for the shadowed picture below. This does use raw eggs but you’re only making less than 2 cups of mayonnaise. If you’re like us, that’ll be gone in a day or two.

Read the directions before making this and don’t goof up like I did and make a soupy mess. lol

This is a very fast and easy recipe to make.

Homemade Mayonnaise

2 eggs
2 Tbsp Lemon juice
1 tsp. salt (I use sea salt)
1 tsp. dry, ground mustard
1¼ cup olive oil (I use an extra light for this so the olive oil doesn’t over-power the mayonnaise)

In a blender add the two eggs, lemon juice, salt, and the ground mustard. Mix on low speed until the ingredients are well combined.

Turn up the blender to a medium- high speed and slowly start pouring the olive oil in in a steady, slow stream until it has all been added. It should start looking thick and “whiteish” like mayonnaise before you get all the oil streamed in. Once all the oil has been added, you’re finished making the mayonnaise. The mayonnaise will have a little bit of a yellow tint because of the eggs and ground mustard.

You can go ahead and use it now or store it in a container with a lid in the fridge. I love the hinge clasp jars as shown in the photo above. It’s a pint jar and it holds this finished product perfectly.

If the above doesn’t make sense about how to drizzle the oil, there’s probably a video or two on youtube.

Enjoy!
